Trail funds sought By LEAH ANDERSON-BYRNE A $1M extension to the existing Kiewa River Trail at Mt Beauty is being accelerated after Alpine Shire councillors chose the project for an application to State Government grant funding programs at their council meeting last week. The State Government recently announced new grant funding programs which provide an opportunity for council to accelerate the delivery of projects listed in the Project Pipeline, supported

Council hopes p to fast track $ $1m p project j at Mt Beautyy by external funding. Council will apply for funding from the Victorian Government‘s Regional Infrastructure Fund to deliver an extension to the existing Kiewa River Trail from the current end point of the Kiewa River Trail back to Embankment Drive via Damms Road. The scoping and design works were completed last financial year and the project is ready for construction.

The fund supports enabling and transformative infrastructure projects that are strategic and align with the relevant Regional Economic Development Strategy. The Kiewa River Trail Extension project cost is estimated to be $1,062,500 with $850,000 to be sought from grant funding, and the remaining project costs of $212,500 being met by council. The trail is located very

close to the Mount Beauty and Tawonga South townships, resulting in an easily accessible track for locals and visitors alike. The extension to this track now takes users to the confluence of the west and east branches of the Kiewa River. The even, sealed surface enables accessibility for users of all ages and fitness levels, including those with mobility issues. The track provides users

with expansive views of the Kiewa River and Mount Bogong, as well as improved access to the river for recreational and training activities. Council will also apply for the development of a masterplan for public facilities within the Dederang Recreation Reserve with a council commitment of no more than $15,000 under the same fund. This masterplan project will develop a masterplan for

a specific area of the Dederang Recreation Reserve, incorporating public amenities, parking, and picnic facilities. Following an assessment of projects in council‘s Project Pipeline which met the grant funding criteria and discussions with Regional Development Victoria, councillors last week also agreed to make funding applications to deliver the Tracks and Trails Masterplan throughout the Alpine Shire, and the Myrtleford Memorial Hall Accessibility Upgrade. ■ Further story page 2
