Rod Run returns
IT’S BACK: Cars and crowds filled Bright over the weekend in the first rod run since 2019. Further pics page 9.
REVVING engines filled the air last weekend for the first official Bright Rod Run in three years, with some attendees estimating it as one of the biggest in the event’s history. Senior Sergeant Doug Incoll of the Bright Police estimated between 10 -15,000 were in Bright for the event, with an unprecedented number of visitors on Saturday and cars “bumper to bumper” for most of the day. “It took people 40 minutes

to travel from Porepunkah to Bright,” he said. “It was pretty well at and over capacity - there were cars parked on every bit of spare ground in Bright.” On Saturday afternoon
Springhurst resident Peter Canning was watching the cars roll past with his family on Ireland Street, having attended the event for the past 30 years. “It’s probably one of the best ones we’ve seen so far,” he said. He estimated the event was 50 per cent busier than he had previously seen. “Everyone’s having a
great time,” he said. Melbourne resident David Lamb has been attending the rod run for 15 years, and said the event has been growing steadily in that time. “When we used to drive up from Myrtleford we could drive straight through,” he said. “There’s not enough Bright anymore.” However, treasurer of the

Bright Rod and Kustom Club Mike Dealy said the event was successful, but visitation didn’t reach the peak of the 2018 event. “We’ve probably forgotten in the three years since we’ve had one how busy it does get,” he said. “It had a busier feel, but I don’t think it was as busy as 2018.” According to Mr Dealy, income from the event was lower than previous years and fewer cars were
displayed at Pioneer Park due to the condition of the oval. “Costs have gone up an awful lot, in some cases as much as 50 per cent,” he said. Tom Buckley, owner of three hospitality venues in Bright, said they had strong customer numbers from Thursday through to Sunday. “It felt like one of the biggest,” he said. “I’ve grown up in Bright, I’ve been around it for 20-odd years and it had a really good feel about it.”
