WHEN they talk about mountains of snow, they’re not kidding.

The heavy falls which began last week and allowed both Mt Hotham and Falls Creek alpine resorts to open a week early last Saturday, haven’t stopped and are forecast to continue for the rest of the week.

Falls Creek had more than a foot of fresh snow in the 24 hours to 9am yesterday, whgile Hotham was pushing half a metre.

Bother resorts are expected to have a snow depth of more than a metre, and with more lifts running and terrain open, this Queen’s Birthday weekend will be the best since the 2000 season.

rentals into holiday lets, thus aiding the shortage of permanent accommodation for our local workers and families.”

Division owner and property manager at Dickens Real Estate Kellie Gray agreed, and said while Bright has always had a low number of rental properties, remote workers moving to town, as well as holiday letting and owners selling their properties, had contributed further to the rental squeeze.

“After COVID-19 workplaces are more flexible, so people are tending to look elsewhere other than the big cities,” she said.

Ms Gray also said the combined rental shortage and increased demand from remote workers was pushing up prices.

“The remote workers have bigger incomes than generally what our rural industry workers get, they are pushing it up,” she said.

“Owners are going

Neither Ms Gray nor Ms Alexander are advertising their rental properties online, saying they have been able to find rentals for their clients without it, and both recommended those looking for rental accommodation be proactive and contact real estate agents.

By MARTIN DAVIS ALPINE Spirit Coaches owner Chris Bonacci is rapt to have an early start to the snow season.

After enduring little to no business during the past two skis seasons due to COVID restrictions and disruptions, the Myrtlefordbased bus line is back on the

mountain resorts, looking ahead to a much brighter season.

“When the drivers all got up to the resorts last wee, we were treated like royalty...congratulating us for arriving it was an amazing feeling to be back up there for the season,” Mr Bonacci said.

“There is excitement in the resorts, and with our staff.

“We feel COVID is behind us and there is a lot more hope that normality is slowly coming back.

“Our phones on Thursday (June, 2) were going off every 30-40 seconds with people booking private charters and also spots on our Snowball Express on the weekends, so people are ready to get back on the slopes.”

While there is excitement with the season’s early start, Mr Bonacci is struggling - like many other businesses - to get staff.

However, he said the company is lucky because the people they do have are very experienced local drivers.

Two sites considered for Mt Beauty water infrastructure

Dangerous conditions in Alpine National Park

EARLY heavy snowfalls and wet, slippery tracks have created dangerous conditions for 4WD access to some areas of Alpine National Park, according to Parks Victoria.

A spokesperson said some tracks, including those above 1000 metres, are currently impassable due to deep snow, significant tree fall and slippery conditions on steep slopes.

Forecast weather leading into the Queen’s Birthday long weekend indicates further snowfalls and wet, cold conditions.

The depth of river crossings may increase.

According to Parks Victoria, it is unlikely that 4WD track conditions will improve prior to the long weekend and visitors are asked to reconsider trip plans to avoid high elevation 4WD tracks, especially tracks in the Upper Howqua, Bluff, King Billy, Twins, Howitt High Plains, Dargo High Plains, and Mt Skene.

The Dargo High Plains Road is currently closed.

A LOCATION for critical new water infrastructure in Mt Beauty has been narrowed down to two potential sites by a community and key stakeholder reference group.

The group, made up of 13 community members and seven representatives from key agencies, have been meeting regularly since March to provide advice to North East Water (NEW)

about potential locations of a raw water offtake.

NEW managing director, Jo Murdoch, said the meetings have been led by an independent facilitator who has steered some very open and honest conversation.

“Not only has the group shared its expertise and knowledge of the area, members have discussed opportunities and learnt about the challenges of each site”, Ms Murdoch said.

“During the last few

months, everyone has had an opportunity to have a comprehensive tour of each of the nine proposed offtake locations.

“We also set-up a working group made-up of five reference group members with specialised expertise to explore each site, and several other possibilities, in greater technical detail.

“The reference group has now decided that two sites be progressed for further consideration which include

Embankment Drive near the outflow of the pondage and a site near the top of tail race pumping from the West Kiewa and the tail race.”

It is anticipated that the reference group and the technical sub-group will meet one more time to finalise their recommendations to the NEW board.

The board will visit the preferred sites in Mt Beauty, as well as meet the reference group members, before making a final loca-

tion decision in July.

Ms Murdoch thanked all members of the group for their participation.

“The meetings have been extremely important in giving the community a voice in the location of this crucial piece of infrastructure,” she said.

Free flu vaccines will help prevent flurona, says GP

By MARTIN DAVIS ALPINE Shire residents are being encouraged to make the most of the State Government’s free flu vaccinations this month, with influenza cases already starting to rise.

Across Victoria in the past few weeks flu cases have risen from 10,000 a week to 15,000.

Myrtleford GP Justin Donaldson from Alba Heath said the flu vaccination would be vital in 2022 with more people coming into the area and the weather getting colder as winter rolls on.

“This year’s flu season has the potential to be a bad one and we’re already starting to see much higher numbers of flu cases being reported,” he said.

“The public are by now more familiar with the concept that different strains

of viruses can emerge, and this is also true with the flu viruses.

“As the flu viruses change every year, we need to adapt and update the flu vaccines to keep up - it’s kind of like an arms race in a way, that’s why we encourage people to have the flu vaccine every year.”

Dr Donaldson believes that having your flu vaccine can help protect yourself from getting the double whammy of having fluorna (flu and COVID-19).

“The flu viruses and COVID-19 viruses are two very different viruses that both involve the respiratory system and can make people seriously ill,” he said.

“Having the COVID-19 vaccine will not protect against the flu, and so it’s important to have both.

“I hope by making the flu

vaccines free, it will help encourage people to get it and so increase the uptake of flu vaccines; ultimately protecting our community and the most vulnerable with in it.”

The Standish Street Surgery in Myrtleford said they have been doing an average of 120 flu vaccinations a week since the end of April, with grants from the State Government helpingensure they can have more staff rostered.

“We are doing our vaccinations off site using the RSL as an off-site clinic so we are able to fit more patients and staff in,” the practice manager said.

“With the State Government now making flu vaccinations free, we are unsure if we will get more people wanting to get their flu jab, as each week depends if we have the stock available.”

Accommodation shortage still hitting our businesses

“All the businesses are suffering from availability of staff,” said Jim van Geet, president of the Myrtleford Chamber of Commerce.

By BRODIE EVERIST STATE Emergency Service (SES) volunteers in Bright were called out to three fallen trees during Sunday’s stormy weather.

Bright SES controller Roy Kennedy said two trees came down in Harrietville, while another fell outside the Mt Beauty Police Station.

One of the Harrietville trees split, landing on a car and damaging a house, with an SES crew taking several hours to clear the damage.

Mr Kennedy reminded local residents to be aware of potential hazards caused by strong weather this winter, suggesting people clear their gutters to stop leaks and watch for branches overhanging buildings.

He also reminded residents to call the SES number 132 500 to report storm damage.

Wind gusts of up to 137km/h were recorded in Mt Hotham on Sunday, and 7.8mm of rain fell at Eurobin.

The Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting windy conditions at Mount Hotham today and tomorrow, and snow showers for Mt Hotham and Falls Creek throughout the week.

Glenyse Peacock, president of the Mount Beauty and District Chamber of Commerce, said local businesses were struggling to find staff accommodation, and suggested local property owners should be encouraged to switch from short-term holiday rental, like Airbnb, to long-term rental.

“It’s less money coming in, perhaps, but it’s also less expenses going out,” she said.

“We all want to be able to enjoy the services that we currently have in our towns, and we can’t do that without people.

“So we do need accommodation to be provided.”

Ms Peacock said her business - a ski hire, bike shop and cafe is renting a four bedroom house to accommodate a staff member, and has filled the other rooms with staff from two other businesses.

“We all need staff to take that

load, and that pressure off us to run an effective business and to give good customer service,” she said.

Both Mr van Geet and Ms Peacock said travel restrictions were also causing staff shortages, with Mr van Geet particularly pointing out the absence of backpackers in the hospitality and agricultural industries since the COVID-19 pandemic.

“As far as hospitality goes, backpackers were the backbone of that industry,” he said.

Amended council budget AN amended draft budget, which would reduce council’s overall projected surplus from $7,090,000 to $5,234,000, was up for adoption with Alpine Shire councillors yesterday afternoon.

Councillors were to consider a range of amendments to the budget, prompted by public submissions and new funding streams for several capital works projects.

Additions to capital works projects include the demolition of the Tawonga Scout Hall, the design of a footpath along Mummery Road and upgrades to offices at Porepunkah and Myrtleford transfer stations.

Under the budget recommended for adoption, council would still raise overall rate revenue by 1.75 per cent, aligned with the State Government’s rate cap under the Fair Go Rates system.

Total rates and charges would total almost $19.9 million, with an $18.84 million capital works program - $8.1m of which is from state/ federal government funding.

Alcott talk sells out in a week

By MARTIN DAVIS TICKETS have sold out in under a week for a one-off public event in Myrtleford next week with disability advocate, sporting icon and 2022 Australian of the Year, Dylan Alcott.

Mr Alcott will be sharing his story with community members at Club Savoy on Wednesday, June 15, and local students during school only events that day.

Alpine Shire Mayor Sarah Nicholas said it’s

exciting to welcome such an iconic sporting figure and Paralympian, who “embodies resilience, perseverance and incredible achievement”.

“He is dedicated to changing perceptions to ensure that people with disability can live how they deserve to live, free from discrimination and limitation,” Cr Nicholas said.

“We are extremely happy to be able to offer this experience to our young people and broader community.”

Mr Alcott was born with

a tumour wrapped around his spinal cord, which was operated on when he was born, leaving him paralysed.

He went on to have a successful tennis career, winning 15 quad singles grand slams and eight quad doubles.

While completing the golden slam in 2021, Mr Alcott won all the major tournaments and a Paralympics gold medal.

He has used his achievements to develop the Dylan Alcott Foundation to help young Australians with a disability.

Public dental wait times grow I AM concerned to hear there will be a $24 million dollar cut

to dentistry across Victoria.

I recently told Parliament that I had a resident from Myrtleford attend my office to inform me that she waited three years to get a filling... three years.

When this resident originally received the filling, it fell out and she returned to the dentist to get it replaced.

However, when attending the dentist to schedule an appointment she was told she would need to wait three years to get that filling put back in.

How can we expect these wait times to be reduced if the

Victorian Government is going to cut another $24 million in funding from our dentistry?

To be able to live within our means, our public system needs to remain strong.

GRADE five and six students at St Mary’s Primary School were privileged to have a visit from Ovens Valley MP, Tim McCurdy, last month.

The visit was part of the students learning in the ‘Civics and Citizenship’ portion of their curriculum while also getting a further understanding of democracy.

Year five/six teacher Gab Jackson said it was great for the students to have a politician explain what happens in Parliament.

“Students enjoyed having Mr McCurdy there to explain what

he does in the Parliament and answering the students’ questions,” she said.

“Some of the questions asked of Mr McCurdy were about why he joined politics, his thoughts on the budget, and his thoughts on what he thinks Myrtleford needs.

“The senior learning community at our school learned a great deal about government from Tim’s visit.”

WANDILIGONG orchardist Don Nightingale began putting in fencing for sambar deer around six years ago, and he hasn't stopped since, most recently putting in fencing for a chestnut plantation.

The Nightingale Bros fruit producers have put in the 1.8 metre tall deer fencing at their properties in Wandiligong, Buckland and Stanley to protect new fruit and nut trees.

It costs nearly $1000 a metre.

“Now we’ve got the burden of the cost, and deer fence is very expensive,” Mr Nightingale said.

Like Mr Nightingale, many Alpine businesses have taken the feral deer issue into their own hands over the past five years, spending big to stop the

pests’ indiscriminate grazing.

John Atkins, part owner of an accommodation business in Harrietville, erected a 2km electric fence to stop deer entering their property.

“If we hadn’t the garden would have been destroyed,” he said.

According to Mr Atkins, it cost around $3000 just for the materials.

One of his major concerns is the deer’s environmental impact, suggesting that they are destroying the Alpine region’s native vegetation and ferns, but he also said the deer’s increasing numbers will impact people’s quality of life.

“Every indication is that deer numbers are doubling every three to four years,” he said.

“It’s obvious as numbers increase they will push into

Buckland Valley cattle farmer Craig Hore upgraded around five to six kilometres of fencing on his 40 hectare property, including installing a new electric fence energiser, to stop deer grazing on his property and destroying his fences.

He used to be able to see a herd of deer from his back porch when he would shine

a torch into the night.

“They’d run straightaway,” he said.

“You’d hear the fences go twang as they charged through them.”

But according to Mr Hore, since hunters moved in deer numbers have shrunk, and he knew of one hunter in the Buckland Valley who shoots 300 to 400 deer a year, and another

Germantown-based hunter who works commercially.

He also said the Victorian Government’s deer culling program had made a noticeable difference.

Parks Victoria has been conducting ground and aerial shooting in both the Alpine and Buffalo National Parks between October 2021 and June 2022, following the government's $18.25

million investment over four years and $4.4 million per year ongoing investment on deer control.

But back in Wandiligong, Mr Nightingale said nothing has been done to stop the big sambar deer.

“They’re walking down the main street in Wandi,” he said.

“Most nights you hear them honking.”

$6000 raised for Cancer Council

By MARTIN DAVIS A VERY successful Bright Biggest Morning Tea was held on Thursday, May 26, with more than 100 people participating, raising more than $6000 for the Cancer Council.

The event was organised

by Bright local Lory Torino, who has been the face of the morning tea for almost 30 years, and he was delighted to see the senior citizens centre filled with people of all ages.

Fundraising events on the day ranged from Tony Strackan offered money to turn his hair pink and eventually shave it off, through to raffles for two hampers which included a $100 voucher for Woolworths and a voucher from Ricardi the butcher.

Mr Torino said it was great

to see so many people get behind the cause.

“We had several items for sale and were offering two willing house workers,” he said.

“Gerard Gray conducted the auctions with skill and a great sense of humour and obtained the best offer for two house workers and the various items that were for sale.”

Emma Ghys from Alpine Health spoke about how Alpine Health assists cancer patients in the area.

Mr Torino thanked all the people involved in running the fundraising event and expressed his gratitude to the senior citizens committee for allowing them to use the hall.

He said the committee has gone back to the drawing board to plan next year’s event.

Students online for NAPLAN

By MARTIN DAVIS STUDENTS across the Alpine Shire have completed the annual NAPLAN testing, which this year was done entirely online.

The National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is for all students in Years 3, 5, 7, and 9 to measure students’

literacy and numeracy skills.

Bright P-12 College principal Jean Olley said students had quickly adapted to the online test.

“We completed a practice test session last year to introduce staff and students to the online format of the NAPLAN Test which made the move to online testing this

year smooth and seamless,” she said.

“Having students onsite and in classrooms supported their engagement with the tests and we look forward to receiving our students’ test results later in the year to celebrate their growth and achievement.”

Sanderson said after being one of the test schools for online NAPLAN testing, it was more about streamlining the processes for this year’s tests.

“Having a 1:1 computer ratio at our school means that all of our students are very familiar with working online,” Ms Sanderson said.

actually have no other NAPLAN test to compare with but they seamlessly navigated the online platform, with the year 7 and 9s managing to work form the online platform with ease.”

Dalbosco family’s service to CFA in Porepunkah spans three generations

By MARTIN DAVIS FOR the Dalbosco family, volunteering in the Porepunkah CFA is a natural part of life.

Sid Dalbosco joined back in 1947 and earlier this year had his 75 years with the brigade recognised with a special honour.

He is proud that three generations of his family are currently aligned with the brigade, which has changed significantly over the years.

“When I started all we had (to fight fires) were a rake hoe and knapsacks,” said Sid. “Things have changed tremendously as we started off with the knapsacks planted all over the place, and throughout the years we have grown...at one stage we had a pump on a trailer before getting our fire truck.

“Our brigade started to assist with fighting small fires and it now has heavy tankers and breathing apparatuses to serve in larger-scale fires and motor accidents.

“It continues to grow which is fantastic and I’m lucky enough to have seen where it started from.”

PHOTO: Martin Davis Sid’s sons Michael, Paul and David grew up with the CFA, being part of the junior brigade from a young age, which they felt was a great stepping stone to joining the CFA. “When we were young-

sters we joined in fire sports and as natural progression we went into the senior ranks,” Paul said.

“For our family especially through Dad we have been community oriented and as farmers the CFA is

always a great support for us and it’s a natural progression to be drawn here.”

As a former captain, Paul said it was fulfilling heading an organisation which is so very beneficial for the town.

Michael’s son Sam said being a CFA volunteer member is a way to contribute to the community, and it’s fantastic to see support during activities such as collecting for the Royal Children’s Hospital’s

Good Friday Appeal.

“Seeing kids come out and give a year’s worth of pocket money to the charity, you get to see how much people appreciate your presence,” he said.

While only in his fifth year as captain of the Porepunkah CFA, Michael is looking forward to seeing what is next for the brigade.

“With the town growing, the plans for a new three-bay shed have been completed, with works hopefully to start in the next couple of months,” he said.

“The current shed is going to be converted into offices and changerooms, with the money there ready to go.

“We have an excellent team here, with ex-captains being still involved, so just like a footy team, we know if everyone works together and shares the load, we can turn out regularly.

“We saw this during the bushfires a couple of years ago where we only had to call on members from other brigades later on in the campaign.

“I’ve very proud of our team.”

From former students to student teachers

FORMER students from Bright P-12 College have returned to the school to continue learning from the teachers to further their education differently.

Student teachers Josh Lindsay (graduated 2018) and Harry Jamieson (graduated 2019) returned to the school to complete their student placements as part of their university degrees.

For Mr Lindsay, this is his final year of his Bachelor of Education at Charles Sturt University, and he is looking forward to completing his studies.

He said while the placement has been a little “weird” working alongside teachers who once taught him, it has been an invaluable experience.

“From the first day I walked back in you get a hit of nostalgia but since then it has been good to get back into the rhythm of things even though it has been strange teaching younger siblings of a lot of people I graduated with,” he said.

“Hearing those kids call me Mr Lindsay now is strange but everyone has been really welcoming and it’s also an honour to come back to where I grew up and do some teaching myself.”

Mr Jamieson too is excited to be back at his old school, completing

He recalls that in year 12 he told Bright P12 Phys Ed teacher Mr Pywell that he would come back to Bright Pâ€12 and steal his job.

“It has been nice to be back in Bright compared to the hustle and bustle of Melbourne but the students have been amazing,

making my first rounds of teaching a really good experience,” Mr Jamieson said.

“It has been interesting being back and also being on the other side and teaching rather than being taught.”

For both these up-and-coming teachers, the experience of learning from their former teachers has been enjoyable and educational.

Both student teachers are hoping that once completing their respective degrees, they can return to Bright and begin their teaching journey.

Recipe of the month: Viennese Ishla biscuits THIS month’s recipe from local cook Patriza Simone and the Myrtleford Farmers’ Market is for Viennese Ishla biscuits.

Ingredients:  250gr (1⅔ cup) roasted hazelnuts  180gr unsalted butter75gr (1/3 cup) castor sugar  185gr (1¼ cup) plain flour  ¼ tsp sea salt  Hazelnuts available from - Ovens River Nuts Method: Place roasted hazelnuts in a food processor and pulse until finely ground.

Beat the butter (chopped and at room temperature) and sugar until smooth and pale.

Combine ground hazelnuts, flour and salt.

Once mixed combine into the butter mixture until a dough forms.

Wrap the dough tightly in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least one hour.

When ready to bake, preheat oven to 170c and line baking trays with baking paper.

On a lightly floured board, roll out the dough to a thickness of 5mm.

Use a 4cm round biscuit cutter (shape of your choice) to cut out biscuits.

Re-roll any scraps and cut into more biscuits till all dough has been used.

Bake for 12 minutes or until lightly golden underneath.

Remove and allow to cool.

Enjoy.

Bogong Village open to public

By LEAH ANDERSON-BYRNE BOGONG Village has been bustling with activity in the past few months, and the community is being invited to see what’s been happening at an open day this weekend.

The village, which showcases beautiful gardens with public access to Lake Guy, the Kiewa River and several recreation areas, was built in the 1940s for workers on the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme

and many of the original houses remain, with 15 being used this winter as accommodation for Falls Creek workers.

Bogong Village transition project manager, Kim Jordan, said Bogong now has good longer term prospects too.

“Expressions of Interest were invited earlier this year, and there are now several options being considered to reactivate the village in a new and exciting way that will honour its past and provide a sustain-

able future,” she said.

“We know that local people want to see it reactivated and remains a resource but in a way that respects its history.

“We’re looking for something that reactivates use of the lake and recreational areas for everybody and includes worker housing which is a big deal up here.

“The opportunity to have a resort surrounded by national park is a once in the lifetime thing.”

As part of the project, Monash University postgraduate architecture students have been working in Bogong for a semester and their ‘Transitioning Bogong’ exhibition will be open over the long weekend.

“It’s been fantastic and their ideas have really blown me away,” Kim said.

“They’ve looked into the history and put forward ideas of what we can do with what exists now, but also looked at

the potential in a few years time.

“They’ve looked at things like sustainable transport, sustainable building materials, bushfire regulations, sourcing from nearby suppliers and childcare to name a few.

“On the open day they will be giving presentations to explain their work, including what they’ve learned from the local community.

“There’ll also be a temporary light installation on the

dam on thursday which I’m really excited about.

“There will be some guided walks around the village and the lake; why not see if your memory is jogged by looking around in the houses and grounds?

“You can drop in for some hot snacks or warm yourself at the big open fire near the lake.”

The open day is being held this Saturday, June 11 from 10am to 4pm.

The BULS honing woodwork skills at Bright Men’s Shed

By MARTIN DAVIS MANY people know the men’s shed is for men who want to go and build anything from tables to benches and has been great for men’s mental health, but what about the ladies who enjoy construction and building?

In conjunction with Bright United Men’s Shed (BUMS), a new group of ladies through U3A Bright District has joined to create the BULS to help get more women into woodworking.

After conversations with BUMS president Kevin Hancock, Jessica Short started up the BULS with more than 50 women who come and work on

various DIY projects.

“I love being creative and I haven’t got into wood working since school so I wanted to know if there was anywhere I could go in Bright after recently purchasing a house and wanting to do some DIY,” Ms Short said.

“I found the men’s shed and talked to Kevin who was quite supportive of the idea, so we started a Facebook group which has 120 ladies on it.

“We have inducted 55 ladies who bring their own projects and it is able to give people something unique to do rather than the normal sport which Bright is known for.”

Ms Short said Kevin’s outlook on getting women involved has been huge for BULS. “When we did first come in there was a bit of ‘what are you doing here?’ but throughout time, some of the guys have come in and watched us use the tools, and we aren’t too bad,” she said.

The BULS are now are part of the shed each Thursday from 5:30pm, with new people being inducted at the start of every month.

ILLUMINATING: The fairy lights are a great addition in Hydro Park.

THE Mt Beauty Illumination Project is an initiative of the Upper Kiewa Valley Lions Club.

Funding for the project was generously provided by the Community Bank Mt Beauty, and AGL via grants, and the UKV Lions .

The project - a year from commencement to completion - had an aim of installing fairy lights at the entrance of the Mt Beauty business district, and nearby parklands.

The goal with this, like so many Lions projects, is to add to the vibrancy of the township, and with this project, to invigorate the village with a a warm and welcoming night time entrance, one that presents the village as pretty, warm and welcoming for both the community and visitors.

The project was started in 2021 with grant applications, with a view of placing lights on the post office as a focal point, and then extended to

lighting on to 21 trees in the nearby Hydro and S K Pearce parklands.

There was much consultation with the Alpine Shire, the Mt Beauty Chamber of Commerce, the UKV Community Association, and the owner of the post office.

There was also investigation on the lights’ effect on flora and fauna, settling on a warm white as the best colour option and non flickering.

Local suppliers and trades people were used to help out with the project.

UKV Lions would like to thank the supporters of this project.

There will be a community event sponsored by UKV Lions of the ‘Turning on the Lights’ to celebrate the opening of the ski season this Friday, June 10 from 5pm.

A walk or ride to the launch site is always a favourite, and you can’t go past a home game at Pioneerr Park. For something to eat or drink, the Deer Farm is a great daytime option or we will take our pick between Tomahawks, 5 Acres, Wandi Pub or the Bright Brewery.

Is there anything you would change about the area?

Making housing more affordable for all would be great. It’s hard for a lot of workers to find accommodation nearby and we will struggle to keep up our reputation for wonderful hospitality if this doesn’t change.

Mt Hotham launches prime development opportunity

By LEAH ANDERSON-BYRNE VICTORIA’S highest alpine resort, Mt Hotham, has announced the release of a limited number of premium development sites located in the heart of the resort at Hotham Central Precinct.

Developers are invited to contribute to the next phase of Mt Hotham’s visitor-centric expansion with the locations on offer described as premium parcels, with immediate access to the ski area, the resort’s transport interchange, and existing commercial hubs.

The Hotham Central Pre-

cinct development builds on the resort transformation that began in 2020 and 2021 with construction of Alpine Gateway, a multi-level car park and day centre (still to be completed), a new biathlon facility, and soon to be followed by a world-class activity hub and snow play experience.

With a year-round perspective, the project is also consistent with the resort’s efforts to support climate change adaptation and sustained resilience of the resort.

Mt Hotham Alpine RMB has launched the opportunity via a competitive tender process, offering developers the chance to capitalise on some of the best land available in-resort.

Bush kinder kids ‘orange up’ for SES volunteers

By MARTIN DAVIS HARRIETVILLE bush kinder kids celebrated Wear Orange Wednesday with a visit from Bright SES last month.

Bush kinder teacher Mica Corscadden said the kids loved having the volunteers from the Bright SES, and it was a great way to acknowledge the work these people do.

“The children enjoyed the visit and made a ‘Thankyou card’ for Roy (Kennedy) and Levi (Gutnick) to take back for all the volunteers to see,” she said.

“The children were very inquisitive about what the vol-

unteers do, who they save and enjoyed seeing all the different safety equipment they use.”

Bright SES controller Roy Kennedy said he enjoyed going out and showing the children equipment the SES use.

“It was a really great event with the kids,” he said.

“We took out our rescue vehicle which the kids enjoyed while also being able to use the lights and sirens.

“It is always rewarding going out and doing school visits...I feel we as volunteers get a lot out of it as well as the kids.

“The kids looked great with their orange helmets which we gave them.”

By MARTIN DAVIS FALLS Creek’s Rocky Valley Dam is to get a new look boat ramp.

Falls Creek Alpine Resort Management Board has received $116,000 to upgrade the ramp and other existing facilities.

The funding comes as part of the Victorian Government’s Better Boating grants program.

Minister for Fishing and Boating, Melissa Horne, said the grant was a example of how Victorians’ boating license and recreational vessel registration fees are being re-invested into boating infrastructure and other programs.

Falls Creek Alpine Resort Management chief executive officer Stuart Smythe said he and the board are grateful for the State Government’s assistance, with

Early dream start for resorts

By JEFF ZEUSCHNER AFTER the challenges of the past two winters, our alpine resorts of Falls Creek and Mt Hotham couldn’t have asked for a better start to this snow season.

Heavy early snowfalls early last week of around half a metre and ideal snow making conditions allowed both mountains to get several lifts rolling for skiers and snowboarders last Saturday morning.

It was the earliest opening to a season in over two decades, and the snow cover has only built since then - with 36cms at Falls Creek and 51cms at Mt Hotham in the 24 hours to 6am yesterday, bringing their respective snow depths to 63cms and 80cms.

More fresh snowfall is forecast for the remainder of the week, exepected to see both resorts’ snow depths to surpass one metre for the traditional opening this Queen’s Birthday weekend, dredging up memories of the 2000 season.

Nathan Butterworth, Mt Hotham Skiing Company general manager, said it has been a magical start at Hotham.

“We’ve watched the resort transition from

green to white and we were thrilled to be able to bring the season opening forward and welcome guests back to what is very special part of Victoria,” he said.

Richard Phillips, Falls Creek Ski Lifts general manager, said the early snowfalls had been “amazing” and are providing some “phenomenal” skiing at the resort, with more lifts and terrain opening this weekend.

“It’s been great to see the village return back to the vibrant atmosphere we’re known for around the country...and the community deliver the special experiences we are famous for.”

Falls Creek Resort Management CEO Stuart Smythe said the early start had been a perfect way to “put the last two years behind us”.

“The village is full ski in and ski out, and with another front coming, it will set the resort up for one, if not its best opening weekend in some time and a true reason to celebrate and bring in the 2022 season,” he said.

Falls Creek is certainly back in action

By LEAH ANDERSON-BYRNE A WELCOMING 94cm of snow last week, and more falling this week has Falls Creek alpine resort gearing up for a thrilling few months.

The mountain opened its season early last Saturday, much to the delight of regular visitors, but official events will be held this weekend.

Falls Creek chief executive officer Stuart Smythe said the resort had “so much on offer” for visitors.

“After two years of uncertainty, our residents, stakeholders and business operators are looking forward to seeing Australia’s best alpine village once again full of guests and snowsports enthusiasts,” he said.

“Falls Creek has so much on offer; from progression perfect terrain to excite all levels of skill, enough bars and restaurants to provide a variety of world class venues stacked with local produce and atmosphere no other mountain can match.”

For those with an adventurous spirit and legs of steel the Falls Creek Guides are there to help explore beyond the resort lines and into the Bogong High Plains.

If walking isn’t the preferred mountain climbing method, Falls Creek Backcountry Tours will pull visitors to the top in their sleds.

And if skiing neither up nor down doesn’t appeal, Falls Creek Snowmobile Tours provide an out-ofbounds adventure on their fleet of snowmobiles.

Alpine Helicopters not only provide scenic flights of the glorious mountain ranges but also offer a HeliHop service between Falls Creek, Hotham and Perisher, so visitors can do a day trip to explore the other Epic Pass mountains before returning to Falls Creek.

Falls Creek’s events calendar is looking pretty full this year to keep visitors entertained with Twilight Tuesdays in the Village Bowl for some marshmallow toasting and a visit from Pete the Dragon back this year and on Thursday’s the kids will love the Fireworks Fiesta.

Interschool races and the Kangaroo Hoppet are back on this year and the Festival of Light, which will create laser-light magic through the village, will be extra special this year.

In conjunction with Falls Creek’s 75th anniversary of when the first lodge was built in the village, the Festival of Light will be a series of spectacular installations across Falls Creek’s famous alpine village.

THIS week’s Antarctic blast has brought bumper falls to Mt Hotham alpine resort and, even better, the ski season was brought forward a week.

For the first time since 2000, the resort has been blanketed in record snowfalls in late May and early June with more mega-dumps on the way from this weekend.

Although the Queen’s Birthday long weekend traditionally marks the season opening, there’s no guarantee of heavy snowfalls.

THE Resilience Project is at the forefront of resilience research and practice in Australia, and Alpine Shire community members are invited to free sessions with facilitator Martin Heppell this month.

The project’s mission is to teach positive mental health strategies to help people increase happiness in their lives.

Alpine Shire Mayor Sarah Nicholas said the past few years have been difficult for shire communities, and resilience is more important than ever.

“We are generally a positive, supportive community....learning how to be personally resilient is an

essential part of tackling whatever life throws at us and supporting others,” she said.

“Tactics to foster and reinforce resilience are essential to ongoing mental health and wellbeing.

“We’re delighted to bring The Resilience Project to the Alpine Shire to help us all explore how to lead happier lives.”

The project focuses on three key pillars proven to cultivate positive emotion - Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness (GEM).

Hilarious duo to perform in Myrtleford

By LEAH ANDERSON-BYRNE ITALIAN comedy duo, Pierro Viavattene and James Liotta, are bringing their two hour show to Myrtleford’s Club Savoy next month as part of their fourth national tour.

One half of the duo, James, said he was looking forward to bringing the show to a regional area.

“I’ve been coming to the Myrtleford area for the La Fiera festival for many years so I’ve got to know Club Savoy,” he said.

“This show is based around our online characters, Pippo and Pasquale, which we’ve had for over seven years now and have toured with them at almost every major city in Australia, so it will be great to bring it to the country towns as well.”

James explained that he and Pierro found each other online.

“We were both doing characters and they worked well together so we became mates and did some videos together,

bringing our characters as friends and it took off,” he said.

“Over the years we’ve accumulated five million views collectively and eventually we decided to put a stage show together.

“It’s a variety show based around Italian humour and looking at how we grew up as Italians; we probably owe our families for a lot of our content, so very much ethnic humour, but it is for everyone to enjoy.

“The show comprises sketches, stand up comedy and video because we started out doing those online so we use them in the stage show to break up the sketches, but it’s not stuff they’ve already seen as it has been created specifically for the stage show.

“We’re really excited; nothing beats hearing the audience laugh in a live capacity and it’s quite fulfilling for the performer so we hope everyone enjoys.”

Club Savoy manager Tarquin Jobson said the club was “very excited” to be hosting the comic duo.

“With the past few years we’ve had, I think everyone could use a great night out and a laugh,” he said.

“We haven’t really had a comedy show like this at Club Savoy for many years now and we like to offer variety in the shows we put on here so this is a great example of that.

“James has been involved in the La Fiera festival, entertaining guests over the weekend and he has his own show that he has taken on the road.

“We are very excited to have him perform for us, so if you’re due for a good belly laugh make sure you book your tickets.”

The event will be held on Saturday, July 19 from 6.15pm.

Fireworks to kick off Dinner Plain’s season DINNER Plain will kick off the ski season with its traditional Season Opening Snow Dance, a magical night of music and fireworks for all to enjoy this Saturday night.

Alpine Shire marketing and events officer, Nathan Fenton, said the party has been a tradition for a number of years at Dinner Plain.

“It’s a chance for everyone to head to the mountains and let their hair down with a killer party amongst the fresh snow,” he said.

“The whole thing is hosted by the best party starter in the business, DJ Eddy, who will be laying down two hours of party tracks amongst the snowgums in front of Dinner Plain Hut. “With the best natural snow in a season leadup since 2000, we’re expecting a big turnout from excited guests.

“This event is totally free, family friendly and finishes off with a huge fireworks display.

“Get set for tunes from 6:30pm and the fireworks finale at 8:30pm.”

Toboggan runs open at Mt Buffalo

By LEAH ANDERSONBYRNE MT BUFFALO is expecting “huge” visitation this year, with its toboggan runs already open for use thanks to the recent snowfall.

Ski School owner David Chitty said he was looking forward to the season.

“Traditionally the ski school opens at school holidays on June 25 so for those dates we’ll be active and the cafe at Dingo Dell will be open seven days a week,” he said.

“The school will open its shop in Dingo Dell to hire toboggans and sell gloves, snow shoes and you can book ski lessons and ski tours.

“At that point the roads are cleared regularly and the rangers are out; the problem with opening too early is there’s no customers, however the toboggan runs are now open.

“I think visitation to all

resorts will be huge with people are coming out of COVID and, regardless of snow conditions, will want to get out and do things.

“I’m looking forward to seeing everyone at our free, family friendly area in Dingo Dell: remember to make appropriate preparations with chains and warm clothing.”

Parks Victoria area chief ranger Julien Atherstone said Parks Victoria was “eager” to welcome visitors to Mount Buffalo National Park.

“Its sheer cliffs, imposing granite tors, Snow Gum forests and tumbling waterfalls transform into a winter wonderland,” he said.

“It’s the perfect location to experience snow for the first time, especially for families seeking an easy and accessible winter experience, with a range of activities available; from snow play, tobogganing, cross country

skiing or snow shoeing.

“It’s important for visitors to put their safety first and come prepared with snow chains for their vehicles, as well as appropriate gear and attire for local conditions.”

The dedicated toboggan area is only available when there is adequate snow cover and is marked with fencing and signage.

O&M helps Terry sock it to cancer

THE Ovens and Murray Football Netball League will be kicking goals both on and off the football field during a special charity round for the Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre Trust Fund this Saturday, June 11.

Football and netball players - including the Saints’ players at home at McNamara Reserve against Lavington this Saturday - will wear socks as part of Terry Socks it to Cancer, inspired by former Benalla star Terry Greaves who is receiving treatment for metastatic melanoma.

Home teams will wear pink socks, away teams yellow and umpires blue to reflect the colours of the Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre Trust Fund.

Donations will also be collected from supporters at the games.

O and M general manager, Craig Millar, hoped the league could help draw attention to a worthy local cause.

“The socks are a fun, simple way for our clubs to be able to support a facility that no doubt, they have come to use or had family members use over the years,” he said.

“It’s a good visual cue for people to ask questions on the day and hopefully the main thing is, we get to raise a lot of money for the cancer centre.”

Mr Greaves, of Markwood, was first diagnosed with cancer 15 years ago, and experienced the challenges of having to travel long distances to receive treatment in Melbourne.

In 2020, his cancer returned and he has since received monthly treatment in Albury.

Mr Greaves said he was passionate about raising money for the cancer centre because it is so important for people in the region to have access to treatment and facilities locally.

“I’ve experienced it first hand after having to travel to Melbourne every three months for five years,” he said.

“It is so much more convenient and stress-free being able to travel to Albury, which is just a two-hour return trip, compared to Melbourne which is six hours.”

Terry Socks it to Cancer has been organised by Mr Greaves, in partnership with AFL North East Border.

Other leagues and clubs are expected to get behind the campaign in the coming weeks, including the Ovens and King Football League on August 13.

Mount Beauty Dragon Boaters roaring for more, on pondage

By NATHAN DE VRIES FOR many residents of the Alpine Shire, the sport of dragon boating is something which conjures up bizarre mental imagery, when in fact it’s one of the most exciting sports going around, according to the local club.

The Mount Beauty Dragon Boat Club (MBDBC) is a 30-plus strong club dedicated to competition and fitness in the sport of dragon boating, which features a crew of 20 rowers armed with a single bladed paddle - along with a drummer at the front to help keep time and someone to steer at the stern - racing against other crews along various distances.

A vibrant and accessible

sport, MBDBC head coach Lisa Smallbone said many locals don’t even know the club exists.

“This is the thing about dragon boating, because it’s not on TV or anything like that, it’s a kind of fringe sport, so not many people know about it,” she said.

“They know about the football and netball and mountain biking, but nobody knows about dragon boating anywhere, let alone in Mount Beauty - we’ve been there for a while.

“Dragon boating comes originally from China but it has influences from any water activity where you’d jump in a canoe from around the world.

“Most people, unless they saw it before, wouldn’t know what

they were looking at.”

Smallbone said the barrier to entry in the club was impossibly low, citing fitness and social benefits.

“Part of it is just people knowing about it and coming along and trying it,” she said.

“It’s a total-body workout, it’s a lot on the upper body and your core strength, but the other beautiful benefit of it is it’s not straining your knees or your ankles.

“It’s a fantastic social sport because you’re with your teammates in the boat, working hard together.

“You’re all supporting each other, there’s a wonderful sense of achievement when you’ve finished a race, particularly if

you’ve done a long race, an endurance event.

“They say it’s the ultimate team sport, and it really, really is.”

While other clubs around the state are active year round, the Mount Beauty contingent usually goes into recess over the winter months, due to the proximity to the more popular snowfields, but the club aims to have an influx of new, eager boaters when they reconvene in August.

“When we start up paddling again, we want to have a whole lot of ‘come-and-try’ days where people can come along and try dragon boating,” Smallbone said.

“We have a thing called ‘Dragon Pass’ where people can sign up and they can paddle for free

for a whole month, we provide all of the equipment all free so people can try it out and see if they like it - we’ll really be pushing that heavily when the season begins again.

“We’ve got some people from Myrtleford involved in the club, from Porepunkah, Bright, the whole Alpine Valley.

“At Mount Beauty, that beautiful pondage is such a beautiful area to paddle on, it’s probably one of the nicest places to paddle on in Australia, I’d have to say, it’s just gorgeous.”

Mount Beauty golfers get around memorial event MOUNT Beauty golfers attended the very important Stephen Green Memorial 4BBB event on Saturday, May 28, which saw the team of Stephen Short and Victor Selway victorious on a countback from Leesa Bevan and Mick Luscombe, with 43 points apiece.

and Peter Dilley, and Roger Church and Peter Johns, with 40 points apiece.

The club also welcomed the four ladies who joined the field for the round.

It is always a pleasure to have a mixed event.

This event is a very important on the club’s golf calendar every year as it was Stephen Green, back in 1998, who was instrumental in converting the club’s sand greens to grass.

This task was completed

over two years with the help of many volunteers, and the fruits of their labours are very much enjoyed by the present membership and all who play on the course.

Thanks must also be extended to the current team of volunteers, under the direction of Stephen Short, who does a fabulous job of

keeping the course in such excellent condition.

On a wet, dreary day, only 13 players, including one lady, braved the conditions to battle out for the June Monthly Medal last Saturday, June 4.

The eventual winner with a 72 net was Dave Browning, followed by Ron Gallagher,

74, and Victor Selway, 76.

NTPs went to Stephen Short on the seventh, the Tatts ticket from the Tawonga South Newsagency & Post Office, ninth: Victor Selway, 17th: Alan Retallick, 18th & and the money, Mick Luscombe.

Mount Beauty set to kick off cyclo-cross series

By MARTIN DAVIS THE first two rounds of the AusCycling Victoria Cyclo-Cross state series will be held this Saturday and Sunday, June 11 and 12, at Mount Beauty’s Big Hill Mountain bike park.

The cyclo-cross series is open

for all riders, with it being designed to encourage participation and recognise individual achievements.

The cyclo-cross discipline is held on various terrains ranging from paved, dirt and potentially some mud sections within the short-timed course.

Team Mount Beauty is hosting the event, and president Rob Vandenburg said he is looking forward to welcoming people from all across the state.

“With the weather looking like it is going to wet and muddy it is going to be a tough ride,” he said.

“The course is being designed by someone who has raced internationally with the first being tougher then the second with the running alternate for the second running.”

“We did change the formation a little bit, we tried something different and that seemed to work OK,” Caponecchia said.

“Normally we play a 4-2-3-1, but this time we changed it to a 4-4-2 and that gave us a little bit more of an avenue onto goal, which we thought we were lacking.

“We discussed it at Thursday night training, and on Sunday we implemented it - we felt it worked really well.

By NATHAN DE VRIES THE good news keeps on coming for Bright’s footballers following the Mountain Men’s deconstruction of King Valley on Saturday, taking the win 16.11 (107) to 4.3 (27).

The match was over by half time, as Bright booted 11.6 by the long break while keeping King Valley to just three scoring shots.

Coach Paul Harrison said it was a fantastic time to be playing for the Mountain Men, with a startling group of talent to draw from in both grades.

“Once again, right across the board, we’re lucky we’ve

got 21 players every week that are playing their role,” he said.

“Yes, we do have blokes that stand out but most of our improvement is coming from our bottom five players.

“Every Thursday night has become pretty difficult now.

“On the weekend we had two pull out Saturday morning, but from Thursday night our forward line in our reserves had Sam Buckley and Daniel Saville in it - it’s a pretty strong reserves forward line with those blokes in it.”

The Bright forwards were the stars of the show, with a slightly altered line.

“Our forward line changed up a little bit because Tom Mullane-Grant did his back in the warm-up, so Sam Buckley ended up playing both games,” Harrison said.

“It was a much younger, quicker forward line and it probably helped in those conditions.

“Young Cooper Thomason popped up and kicked seven - for a 17 year old kid, he’s probably in the top five goalkicking in the comp, he’s having a really good year.”

The Mountain Men’s home game against Bonnie Doon this weekend will be the only fixture set to take place, with the rest of

the league taking the bye in the Queen’s Birthday split round.

Both Bright and the Bombers are top four sides in both grades, with the contests set to be explosive.

“It definitely will be a challenge, it’s a really big test for us,” Harrison said.

“Our ground’s holding up fairly well at the moment, and we’ve got a couple more mids coming back into the team this week in James O’Shea and Nathan Lyons, who are two really good ins for us.

“Hopefully we can run them off our feet, play our own game style, and I’ll back us in.”

BRIGHT’S A grade netballers showed the competition they are not a side to be counted out, after securing their second win of the year in spectacular fashion, obliterating King Valley 40-18 at Whitfield.

The match started on somewhat even footing with the visitors’ lead stretching from six goals at quarter time out to 12 by half-time.

The game was put to bed through the third quarter, a period of play which saw Bright shoot nine goals while restricting King Valley to just four.

Coach Bridget FlintChapman said the effort across the court contributed to the win, despite the inclement weather endured.

“It was played in very wet conditions and definitely changed the style of play,” she said.

“We were really able to focus on our team aims and work on trusting

out plan and the players around us.

“It was a very defensive game again, and we were able to limit their goals to just 18.”

Maddy Muller and Monique Martin were among the best on court for Bright.

Bright head into their split round match this weekend at ninth on the A grade ladder, with the difficult task of defeating sixth ranked Bonnie Doon on Saturday at Pioneer Park very much on the cards.

“This week will be a tough game, but if we can keep our flow and keep trusting our plan, I’m hoping we can be competitive against them,” Flint-Chapman said.

“The split round is definitely needed - we are all looking forward to a rest and allowing our bodies to recover.”

Bright also found success in the B grade, B reserve and under 15 matches, while conceding the C grade match 19-24.

Lacklustre Lions downed

By NATHAN DE VRIES A LACK of drive throughout the match against Tarrawingee on Saturday delivered Whorouly its eighth senior loss of the season, defeated 5.5 (35) to 13.10 (88) at Tarrawingee.

The Lions were still in the fight after quarter time, but were outclassed by a hungrier Tarrawingee squad as the game drew on.

Whorouly co-coach Jack Reiter said the result was disappointing, considering their early game efforts were starting to pay dividends.

“Early on, our forward entries were a lot better, we could find deep entries in to Max Bramich - he was leading up really well we got some nice, deep ones in but we just struggled to lock it in the forward line,” he said.

“We didn’t get enough repeat entries which is what we like to do, set up the wall and play our style of footy, locking that footy in the forward line and if

it comes out, kick it back in.

“Riley (Calvene, co-coach) said before the game if we were going to lose today, we don’t want to lose through lack of effort, and when we came in after the game, the effort just wasn’t there for the majority of the game which was unfortunate.

“We had a lot of blokes who were a bit flat footed and probably not working hard enough both ways, but credit to Tarra’ though, they played really good footy but it was similar to the Greta second half - they only played good footy because we allowed them to.”

While weather conditions and the preparation of the ground left much to be desired, Reiter said the determination some players showed was an extreme positive.

“Max Grant was best on and he was best on by a mile in my eyes, he was super playing in that back six - the whole back six was good as a whole again, they tried their heart out all day,

but ‘Maxy’ was super,” Reiter said.

“I don’t know what he’s doing but it works, he hates getting beaten and he just tries and tries.

“Xavier (Cannizzaro) was good up until he got hurt, he was on track for another good game until he got hurt which was really disappointing.

“He grabbed the ball and his feet were off the ground and he got tackled, his feet came from underneath him and he just landed flat on his pelvic bone and crunched all his ribs, his back and ribs were really stiff afterwards, a bit sore.”

The Lions’ next game will be on Saturday, June 18, and will take the first week of the upcoming split round off, with Reiter hopeful players can rest, recover, and return ready to take on the second half of the season.

The Whorouly reserves side also tasted defeat, blown away 16.6 (102) to 4.3 (27).

A FULL-STRENGTH Whorouly Lions A grade netball side secured a 13 goal win against the Tarrawingee Bulldogs on Saturday, taking control after an even contest in the first half.

The teams were well-matched in the beginning, with Tarrawingee taking a brief one-goal lead after the first quarter, and were leading 24 goals to Whorouly’s 22 in the second quarter.

Whorouly pulled away in the third quarter, taking a six-goals lead into the last term and then cemented their position with a further 18 goals.

“It was a great win, we were really proud of the girls and how everyone played,” Ebony Allen, Whorouly A grade playing cocoach said.

“We hadn’t had a full team due to injuries and illnesses for the

last few weeks so to have everyone back together this weekend and to get the win was great.

“The first half was a very even contest, I think Tarra were actually ahead at the first two breaks by two goals so for the girls to come out and win by 13 goals, it was an amazing effort.

“At half-time we spoke about coming out and just playing our game and keeping up that intensity to put as much pressure on Tarra as we could.

“That’s when we started to pull away and get ahead, we just stepped it up a notch and utilised every opportunity we had to score.”

Allen said it was a great team effort from Whorouly this week, with many players showing their mettle.

“Katie Ivone had a strong game in the ring putting up a lot of goals,” she said.

“Bec Allen and Jane-Maree (Fitzpatrick) had a very consistent game through the mid-court feeding our shooters very well.

“Sally Wood had another outstanding game in defence, the pressure she can put on her opponents causes turnovers every week.”

The win was the icing on the cake for Allen, who notched her 50th senior game as player and co-coach.

The Queen’s birthday split round this week means Whorouly will face Goorambat in two weeks on June 18.

“We will use that to our advantage, we will still work hard and train both nights,” Allen said.

“We have had a bit of a bad run with COVID so it will hopefully give everyone the chance to fully recover before the remainder of the season.”

Saints outperform Raiders

By NATHAN DE VRIES MYRTLEFORD’S senior footballers came out on top in their chilly contested slog of a game against Wodonga Raiders at Birallee Park on Saturday, the Saints dominating after quarter time to get the points 14.16 (100) to 7.7 (49).

Conditions meant wet weather footy was the name of the game, as Raiders initially restricted Myrtleford from playing their natural, free-flowing game style before the Saints kicked into gear.

A 21 point margin in the Saints’ favour blew out to 42 coming into the final term, as Myrtleford piled on the scoreboard pressure.

Co-coach Dawson Simpson said the effort across the ground was extremely positive, particularly from the forwards.

“We went there and Raiders, in the first quarter, were certainly very hungry and they were playing some really good footy,” he said.

“We didn’t have it all our own way, it was a wet slog of a game but after the first quarter we were able to get the ball on our terms.

“It was a good result, I’m happy with how the boys performed after quarter time.

“The forward line functioned a lot better this week, we went with two talls - Ryley Sharp (three goals) and the resting ruck, either myself or Callum Crisp - and played a smaller forward line and they were really good, everyone chipped in with a couple of goals.

“Ryley’s just in fantastic form, he’s so reliable, he’s a real leader and the way he goes about his footy and prepares so strongly each and every week, it’s no wonder he performs how he does.”

It was a challenge all day for the Saints’ ruckmen against Raiders’ Isaac Muller, who went up all day and won three times as many hitouts.

WODONGA RAIDERS “Isaac Muller is an enormous quality ruckman and had a big influence on the game and was fantastic,” Simpson said.

“There were a lot of stoppages and our mids were good, they took a lot of body and were able to nullify him a bit.

“It was a good contest in the midfield - early on he (Muller) was really big for them and got them going.

Myrtleford’s reserves enjoyed a

cruisy win over Raiders 23.29 (164) to 1.0 (6), while the thirds suffered their fourth loss of the season 5.2 (32) to 6.4 (40).

The victory keeps Myrtleford in fourth on the senior ladder, ahead of Wangaratta Rovers on percentage, going into their match against Lavington this Saturday at McNamara Reserve.

The Saints will be eager to settle the score against the Panthers, following their upset loss in round one.

“There’s no doubt we’ve got a lot of respect for Lavington and we’re

looking forward to having another crack at them and hopefully getting the score back to 1-1,” Simpson said.

“We certainly went over there with the expectation that they were going to be a quality side, and we just couldn’t get a hold of them all day - they were very fast with the footy, they moved it with good skill.

“In the last quarter we were able to get our game going but it was too late, we had a six goal deficit and we pared it back to about two goals and weren’t quite able to get it done.

“A fast start or an intense start is what we’re after.”

Polished Saints power past Raiders in third term for win

By NATHAN DE VRIES A SURGE though the third term in Myrtleford’s A grade netball match against Wodonga Raiders delivered the Saints a solid win, knocking down Raiders 43-35.

Slippery conditions early on in the match lead to unforced errors from both sides, with the Saints taking an early lead which was pared back to 15-15 by half time.

Myrtleford coach Tina Way said the performance from her girls in the third quarter to take a commanding seven goal lead really separated the two outfits.

“I’m very happy we had a dominant third quarter and we came away with a good win,” she said.

“We changed a few minor things in regard to how we were playing the game and the girls really did a good job to take the lead into that quarter.

“We didn’t do anything fancy, didn’t do anything fantastic, we just put a bit of polish on what we were doing, the girls turned the ball over and were able to score, and that gave us a really great quarter that was able to set us up for the win.”

Citing Raiders’ ability to move the ball through the mid court at a pace and their

height in defence, Way said her team was able to nullify any potential counterattacks.

“Sally Botter played goal attack against their tallest player and she got best on ground for us on the weekend,” she said.

“She played herself up the court then we played wide on the centre pass which really took the goal defence’s strength out of the game.

UNSTOPPABLE: Saige Broz had three seperate Raiders players try and shut her down in wing attack, with little to no success.

“Saige Broz had a good game in wing attack, had three different opponents throughout the game, obviously she was beating the opposition.

“They’re a great group of

athletes that really take on any feedback that I give and we give to each other, the girls are really good at discussing anything they want to adjust between themselves as well, going out and applying the things we discuss and coming away with success.”

The Saints face their greatest challenge on the court at McNamara Reserve this weekend, coming up

against Lavington.

After last season’s inability to find an answer to the Panthers’ game style, and following Myrtleford’s 56-29 bombing against Lavington back in round one, Way said the stage was set for a showdown.

“They had the jump on us in 2021 and a very big loss (to them) early this season, but we’ll just be continuing doing what we’re doing, developing ourselves and pushing ahead,” she said.

“They beat us by a lot, and we would really hope to decrease that margin.

“We want to play well; I do have a different side playing this weekend compared to what played them last time.

“We just really want to be out and playing our game a win would be unreal but I definitely do not want to have a loss deficit like last time.”

The B and C grade Saints also came away with handy wins in their tussle with Raiders, while the 17 and under side were downed 27-46.

By BRODIE EVERIST DEDERANG-Mount Beauty faced tough losses in both netball and football last weekend, with all netball grades losing to Kiewa Sandy Creek and only the Bombers’ reserves football team recording a win.

In senior football, the DederangMount Beauty Bombers remain in the middle of the ladder after losing 6.7 (43) to the Kiewa Sandy Creek Hawks’ 10.11 (71) on Saturday at Mt Beauty Reserve.

The Dederang-Mount Beauty seniors were steadily outclassed throughout the game despite a sterling effort from the Bombers’ Nicholas Hynes to score three goals.

The Hawks started out with a six point lead after the first quarter, scoring two goals and three behinds to the bombers one goal and three behinds.

Kiewa Sandy Creek booted another three goals in the second quarter, increasing their lead to 16 points.

In the third term the Bombers managed to keep pace with the Hawks and hold them to a 16 point lead, but in the final term Kiewa Sandy Creek pulled away with two unanswered majors.

Dederang-Mount Beauty’s Elliott Powell was named best on ground, with special mentions going to Brady Johnson, Matthew Lee, Charlie Ryder, Damien Jones and Jordan Harrington.

The Bombers are looking to bounce back from their loss when they face the Thurgoona Bulldogs next week at Dederang Reserve on June 11.

In the reserves Dederang-Mount Beauty defeated Kiewa Sandy Creek 8.8 (56) to 5.9 (39), while the under 14 Bombers were trounced by the Hawks 1.4 (10) to 10.14 (74).

In netball, the Dederang Mount Beauty A grade team were overwhelmed by the Hawks, going down 22 points to Kiewa Sandy Creek’s 51.

Ten goals from Tessa Walsh and eight from Alysha de Koeyer weren’t enough to stop the Hawks dominating throughout the match.

The Bombers A grade are sitting eighth on the ladder with eight points, below Beechworth with 20 points.

Dederang Mount Beauty were also outclassed in the B Grade, losing 29 to the Hawks’ 42 points, while in C Grade the Bombers lost 27 to 51 against the Hawks.

THE division 1 Savoy men showed their class on Sunday, with a comprehensive 8-1 victory over Wodonga Diamonds, setting the stage for their FA Cup semi-final clash tonight against Albury United.

Myrtleford had control of the match for the vast majority of play, executing to nearperfection with a range of players sending the ball past the goalie.

Coach Rob Caponecchia said the scoreline helped put to ease some lingering doubts from previous matches.

“It was a really pleasing result - considering what we did last week (4-2 loss to Albury City), I thought maybe the confidence would’ve been a

little bit dented, but to their credit they came out with real purpose and real intensity,” he said.

“Once we scored that first goal, we just dominated the whole match after that.

“There was a little period in there where they had a few shots on goal but it wasn’t too serious or too dangerous.

“The most pleasing thing was we played like a team on Sunday, everyone contributed, everyone played their role really well.”
