Alpine resorts’ rejig in place after winter

By JEFF ZEUSCHNER THE Victorian Government is pressing ahead with its restructure of management and governance of the state‘s alpine resorts, but it won‘t be in place for this winter.

A year ago the government announced it will abolish the current system of management boards at each of the state‘s alpine resort and place governance under a new, centralised entity – Alpine Resorts Victoria.

It said the changes were the result of “government reforms to make alpine boards more efficient”, and followed consultation with the industry, local government and resort management boards.

The new entity governing Falls Creek, Mt Hotham, Mt Buller, Mt Stirling, Lake Mountain and Mt Baw Baw alpine resorts was originally to commence in July this year.

However, that has now been postponed until the end of winter, according to the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP).

“Alpine Resorts Victoria will replace the four existing alpine resort management boards and the Alpine Resorts Co–ordinating Council from 1 October, 2022,” a DELWP spokesperson said.

“To minimise any disruption to the 2022 snow season and allow sufficient time for the new board to be appointed, alpine resort management boards and the Alpine Resorts Co–ordinating Council will continue to operate until that time.

“As part of this transition Alpine Resorts Victoria must establish ‘stakeholder consulta-

tive committees’ at each resort within 12 months of coming into operation to ensure the unique characteristics of each resort and the views of resort stakeholders are considered in decision making.”

Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change, Lily D’Ambrosio, said last year that there is “broad support for the creation of a single entity”.

She said it was to “ensure long term sustainability of the alpine industry and tourism while making sure the resorts are operating in a financially sustainable way”, noting the alpine sector contributes almost $1.1 billion to the Victorian economy each winter.

Minister D’Ambrosio is currently seeking expressions of interest for up to nine directors, including the chairperson and deputy chairperson, for the board of the new Alpine Resorts Victoria, with appointments to commence on October 1.

Applicants will be shortlisted based on their skills, qualifications, knowledge, and experience in relation to: alpine environments, activities and tourism; financial management, commercial acumen or economic development; natural resources management; cultural knowledge and authority arising from experience as a Traditional Owner of land in alpine resorts; environmental conservation; and public administration or governance.

HPA head of sales and marketing, Owen Johnston, said the six week harvest had seen the local farms’ 32

He said this year’s crop had experienced a very mild growing season, with the local farms experiencing above-average rainfall and cooler daytime temperatures in spring and summer which suited the Aussie hops.

“This year’s harvest was

the largest in many years, with the establishment of new acreage in both the Ovens Valley and Buffalo Valley over the past three years,” Mr Johnston said.

“Brewing quality is looking good, with high alpha acids and essential oils across their different hop varieties.

“HPA expect to meet their yield forecasts within the normal seasonal variances, which should allow them to fill their contracts with

brewers across Australia and around the world.”

Mr Johnston said HPA was reaping the benefits of its recently completed $35 million project at its Myrtleford district operations, that involved planting 300 new hectares of in-demand Aussie flavour hops like Galaxy, Vic Secret and Eclipse as well as constructing a new processing facility.

“The facility houses an additional two picking

machines, 12 kiln floors, one conditioning floor and one bale press, effectively tripling their total processing capacity,” he said.

“The expansion project will allow HPA to process all hops in a timely fashion, as well as creating more chances for employment, skills development and priority purchasing of local products and services in the growing regions.”

Myrtleford area has in part sought to revive former land parcels that were formally used for growing tobacco, prior to the local industry’s closure almost 15 years ago.

“We’ve just been slowly acquiring land through our relationships with the local owners and leasing land here and there, and actually purchasing land in other cases,” Mr Johnston said.

“It’s been really lovely working with the local people to make those fields productive again.”

Independent kicks off re–election campaign INDI Independent federal MP Helen Haines officially launched her campaign for re–election on Sunday, in front of hundreds of supporters gathered in Wodonga.

The incumbent MP, who is hoping to serve a second term by reclaiming the seat at next month’s yet to be called federal election, pledged to continue to work with the people of Indi to achieve the vision of a “prosperous regional community where people are set up not just to survive, but to thrive”.

“We want a community where, when you get old, you know you can get care at home, and if you need it, you can find a place in residential aged care, close to home, and you know you‘ll be cared for well there,” Dr Haines said.

“A community where you are not afraid of having no phone reception in a case of emergency.

Dr Haines recounted the ways in which the people of Indi had worked together to push the “Australian Federal Integrity Commission Bill, the Indi Bill, further than any other proposal for an integrity body at a federal level”.

She promised to continue to push for an integrity commission and a better standard of politics, action on climate change and investment in regional healthcare.

A COVID wave has gone through the Alpine Shire with cases once again in triple digits.

The shire had 22 new COVID cases detected in the 24 hours to Monday, with total active cases rising by 88 per cent on the previous week to 149 cases, according to the Victorian Government’s Coronavirus data.

Alpine Health’s COVID vaccination clinics are still operating, with times changing this week - both Bright (9am-11am) and Mt Beauty (1pm-3pm) clinics are operating on Mondays at Alpine Community Health Centre in Bright and Mount Beauty Hospital.

Myrtleford residents will be able to go to the multi-purpose room at Myrtleford Hospital to receive any of their remaining vaccines with an all-day clinic running each Wednesday.

Vaccinations are available via walk-in with the demand for vaccines being reduced due to high percentage of people being vaccinated.

If you have symptoms of COVID, Alpine Health PCR testing clinics are still open from 2:30pm-3:30pm at Mt Beauty Hospital on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Bright and Myrtleford hospital clinics will be testing from 7.30am-8.30am due to increased demand for testing.

Albury-Wodonga Health (AWH) will be operating a Children’s Vaccination Clinic at the Mt Beauty Community Centre this Friday from 10am to 2pm.

AWH will be holding another vaccination clinic at Myrtleford Neighbourhood Centre tomorrow from 1pm-5.30pm.

Council progress on Tawonga project Demolition of old Tawonga g Scout Hall to make wayy for new use

By MARTIN DAVIS ALPINE Shire councillors were last night expected to help progress the ongoing development of the Alpine Better Places Tawonga project.

Meeting for their first ‘in person’ monthly council meeting this year, councillors were to consider a recommendation to proceed with demolition of the old Tawonga Scout Hall, and resume further community engagement for future use of the site.

Council last year acquired the

hall and site for the community and recent inspections deemed the building not suitable for any purpose including accommodation due to its condition and lack of facilities.

The estimated cost for the demolition is $50,000, which would be worked into the 2022/23 council budget.

Councillors were told community feedback based on recent engagement has determined four alternative options for the Tawonga Scout Hall site, namely: Option 1 - parkland, revegeta-

tion and carparking; Option 2 - new building and carparking; Option 3 - relocation of multipurpose playing courts to this area, and Option 4 - cycle pump track.

As part of establishing plans for the Scout Hall site, council has identified three key issues that remain for the Alpine Better Places project.

These are safe pedestrian circulation and crossing points on the Kiewa Valley Highway, carparking on the

Kiewa Valley Highway adjacent to the Old Tawonga Store, and the extent of new playground shade trees and natural elements.

The report to council last night recommended further community engagement on the options, after which concept plans are to be drawn up for potential adoption at the December council meeting.

Council will be seeking external funding once a concept design is adopted to commence the delivery of the project.

More play spaces for growing communities

By MARTIN DAVIS PLAY spaces throughout the Alpine Shire will be reviewed as part of the Sport and Active Recreation Plan adopted by council earlier this year.

The 12-year plan will be looking at multiple recommendations and opportunities to develop currently established play spaces and also the creation of new areas for people, particularly children and families, to enjoy.

Parents in the Myrtleford community definitely see the opportunity to get more of these areas established and improved with the ongoing growth of the township.

Responding to a Facebook post by the Myrtleford Times/Alpine Observer, many parents are keen to see more play areas on the northern end of Mummery Road at the Marconi Reserve.

While council doesn’t have any formal plans in place for these areas, it has said a review will look at all existing play spaces and consider: - the area’s remaining life span; - the size of play space; - condition of play spaces; - type and diversity of play opportunities provided; and - supporting infrastructure such as paths, seats and shade.

By ANITA COIA SOME $1.09 million in funding from the Federal Government’s Black Summer Bushfire Recovery Grants Program has provided a much-needed boost to the Alpine Better Places Harrietville - Dredge Hole Precinct project.

The project - which will provide toilets, landscaping, lighting, a day shelter, picnic tables and directional trail signage - is designed to manage visitor foot-traffic and address parking issues, which were impacting on local residents.

The space will include 24 to 36 car parks (including space for trailers/vans).

Until recently, people hiking the Bungalow Spur parked at the trailhead, which would become very congested, spilling over into local roads.

Hikers looking for parking would then park along local roads in and around the Dredge Hole, or accidentally enter private land looking for a parking spot.

IMPROVEMENTS AHEAD: More than $1m in Federal Government funding will help improve parking and amenities at the Dredge Hole Precinct in Harrietville.

PHOTO: Anita Coia The Harrietville Community Forum and local residents requested help from the Alpine Shire, which negotiated with DELWP on behalf of the residents and provided some initial funding to create a temporary parking area on the corner of Feathertop Track and the Dredge Hole access road and install signage and traffic control.

The start of the road to the Dredge Hole was also sealed, reducing the impact of dust

from visitor vehicles on the residents in the area.

The Dredge Hole swimming area is not part of the Dredge Hole Precinct plan, but should benefit from the improved parking facilities, ensuring better amenity along the access road by redirecting hikers from parking along the road.

Alpine Shire Mayor Sarah Nicholas said the project design, developed through engagement with the commu-

nity during the Alpine Better Places - Harrietville detailed design process, reflects the township’s gold mining and Chinese settlement heritage.

“Delivery of this project is really exciting because it has been developed in consultation with the local community - it’s now shovel-ready, so the funding is terrific,” she said.

35 high care beds aren’t enough NOW that a community narrative is beginning to emerge around the hospital redevelopment in Bright I would Iike to make the following comments based on my experiences with the provision of aged care here in Bright.

When we receive the funding for stage one the 35 high care bed facility will be built.

Low care currently provided at Hawthorn Village will cease and the building will become part of a new vibrant education precinct.

All the low care residents will need to transfer to the new high care facility because most

have sold their homes to pay their residential accommodation bond and would have no home to go too.

With the 25 to 30 beds that are currently occupied, the remaining few beds will be taken by those making the decision to enter residential care who are quick enough to secure a place.

Once the new 35 bed facility is fully occupied, getting a place for high care could prove extremely difficult if your need is urgent, and you have to wait for a room to be vacated by a low care resident.

Unfortunately unless those extra proposed 14 beds in stage two are built during the stage one phase, there is a good chance that there will be more families who have no option but

to place a family member in a facility out of town.

We need to look more broadly at options to improve these numbers so they actually work for the future.

Aboriginal flag should be flying I HAVE been meaning to pen this letter for a few years now, regarding the ignorance of this town to not have an Aboriginal flag flying at the clock tower in Bright.

With our wonderful First Nation’s population we have in the area, and the fabulous Duma Cafe, it saddens me to not see their flag flying proudly alongside the Australian one.

Reading last month’s (Wed 23/3) article in this paper, I am confused, and annoyed.

In the article, “Council develops first Reconciliation Action Plan”, it talks of First Nation people contributing to the plan, and “developing a plan.......in order to commit and understand these Traditional Owners of Country”.

Surely a step in the right direction of understanding, would be to show a sign of respect and fly the flag.

I do understand that our clock tower is also a war memorial site as well, however, plenty of Aboriginals fought in the wars.

Come on Bright, it’s time to act, not just talk about reconciliation.

BA boost for Porepunkah CFA brigade volunteers

By MARTIN DAVIS POREPUNKAH CFA brigade is getting a set of breath apparatus (BA) to further bolster its emergency response capabilities.

The brigade is one of 116 across the state that is getting the apparatus as part of the $2.25 million worth of public donations received by the CFA and Brigades Donations Trust.

Porepunkah CFA captain Mick Dalbosco said the BA will be installed on the main tanker in the coming months.

He said members recently underwent training on the apparatus.

“Once these breathing apparatuses are installed, they will be able to protect the members’ health and safety...not only in fire response, but also during motor vehicle accidents where harmful chemicals in plastics burn.”

CFA and Brigades Donations Fund chair Graeme Jilbert said the roll out of the new BA sets are expected to be completed in the next couple of months.

“It’s great to see community donations going towards such an important project which focuses on increasing the safety of our firefighters,” he said.

How long have you lived in the area?

My partner Dom and I made the move to Myrtleford in November last year from Wagga Wagga in NSW after thinking about it for far too long!

What do you do?

I am one of the new physiotherapists at Flexout Health. I am working from the Alpine MYRTLEFORD Allied Health Hub in Myrtleford, as well as at the Gardens clinic in Albury. After previously living and working in Canada and experiencing a number of injuries myself, my decision to study physiotherapy and practice in the Victorian Alps was an easy one.

What are your hobbies and interests?

I love being outdoors in all seasons. In the summer you will find me chasing waterfalls, going on hikes and camping whenever I get the chance. In the winter my favourite thing to do is get to the mountains and go snowboarding. The snow is my happy place.

What do you like about the area?

Part of the reason myself and my partner moved to the area was because of how much we love adventuring in the great outdoors. We love that there are countless hikes, waterfalls, mountains and nature at our very doorstep - there is always something fun to do.

Where would you take visitors coming here?

To Rollason’s Falls in Mount Buffalo National Park - one of my favourite waterfalls and swimming holes.

To go play in the snow at either Falls Creek or Mount Hotham, or to our new favourite place to hang out The Old Factory for a Sunday afternoon for beer and a burger.

Is there anything you would change about the area?

I love this area just how it is. Everyone is so kind and friendly, wouldn’t want to live anywhere else.

Probus club folds after 30 years

By MARTIN DAVIS UNCERTAIN times have ended the Myrtleford Probus Club’s 30 year existence in the community.

Club members met at the Myrtleford Bowls Club for the final time on Monday, having to make the heartbreaking decision to call it a day after having seen membership dwindle over the past two years of the COVID pandemic and being unable to fill critical committee positions.

Club president Barry Morey

said it was disappointing end after 30 years of providing retirees the chance to participate in social activities and fostering friendships.

“After the last couple of months trying to find members to join the group no one has come forward to fill the role of secretary with the club unable to run without one,” Mr Morey said.

Past president and 16-year member Mary Masin said she is extremely disappointed and distressed that the club has had to fold.

“The problem is we don’t have a secretary; we have 40 members who are anxious and want the club to continue and we all love the friendship that the club brings but you can’t run a club without a secretary,” Ms Masin said.

“The members are all elderly and a lot of them don’t have computers, so we are very computer illiterate and we were hoping someone would be able to join and hopefully be the secretary.”

While the club will cease, Ms Ma-

sin believes the friendships made won’t be lost.

“The friendships will continue... we have had discussions around organising lunches and other things especially for the older members of the group, but we are going to lose our club,” she said.

“Now that the club is closed it will never open again.”

A last memory for club members was February’s trip to Tasmania, which was delayed two years due to the COVID pandemic.

Locals step up to help flood ravaged Lismore

By MARTIN DAVIS RESIDENTS in the flood affected town of Lismore have welcomed the generosity of the Alpine community, with loads of nonperishable donations delivered to the town last month.

The need for assistance remains however, with parts of the town flooded again last week, compounding recovery efforts for thousands of people ravaged by flood waters in early March.

Karen Iaria from Alpine Furniture and Appliances in Bright has been collecting local donations of non-perishable

items since the start of March, and getting them delivered to desperate community members with the help of many people heading to the area.

“People have said to me they have spare room in their trailers and 4WDs when they are going up that way so I’ve been relying on them so far,” she said.

“I’m still on the lookout for people with a truck or similar to be able to take a large load up to Lismore and the surrounding areas.”

Donations have been coming in from various community members and organisations,

including Myrtleford Scouts who donated manchester and camping gear.

Mrs Iaria has worked with other locals to fund a nurse who is currently taking time off to go into the flooded community to perform welfare checks.

“We were able to fund $450 which was transferred into nurse Carmel’s bank account, which assisted with her fuel to go to the town,” she said.

Mrs Iaria is pleased to see so many people wanting to help out others and urging anyone heading to the area and has rooms in their car, trailer or caravan, to get in

contact with her on (03) 5755 1453.

The next run of donations will be at the end of May, with some local businesses eager to step up with donations of pillows and other non-perishable items.

Councillors opt for increased allowances

By MARTIN DAVIS ALPINE Shire councillors have opted to take up the maximum allowances which have recently been increased following a statewide review by the Victorian Independent Remuneration Tribunal.

The review - the first since 2008 - recommended a significant increase in annual allowances was warranted to cover the opportunity loss - of time and potential income - by being on council, in addition to helping assist attract high calibre candidates to local government.

Deputy mayor Cr Katrina Hughes is set to gain up to a 74 per cent increase in her allowance, rising up to $37,353 per annum.

Mayor Sarah Nicholas will receive a 19 per cent increase with the allowance rising to $74,706 per annum.

All other councillors’ allowances will rise to $24,080.

Mayor Sarah Nicholas said last month that allowances are an important way to ensure people who do put themselves forward to represent communities are not disadvantaged.

“The time commitment of a councillor or mayoral role can be considerable and daily, family and employment routines are regularly affected,” she said.

“Often councillors need to have flexible employment conditions to be able to attend critical meetings and take time without pay or refuse casual work.”

Cr Ron Janas said these allowances are extremely important to allow many of the councillors to be able to perform their role as a councillor.

“If people don’t receive the allowances we’re potentially precluding community members onto council,” he said.

Cr Janas said the revised allowances may help encourage more younger people to stand for council, including young mums who are often underrepresented on council.

“It’s an opportunity for council to be able to bring in new, young members, with the allowances being an important part of being a councillor,” he said.

Ukraine prayers: all we need is peace

To show support for the besieged country and its people, recently appointed Anglican priest Moira Evers is holding an interfaith service in Myrtleford this afternoon.

“None of us are untouched by what happens overseas... even though we’re so far away we have the internet and our news services,” she said.

“We’re very exposed to everything that happens and can’t help but notice the terrible things happening in Ukraine so what we’re hoping to do is stand in solidarity with the people in the way we can.

“This is through awareness, mindfulness and, in our tradition, through prayer.

He said many of the players have being taking on refugees from Ukraine.

BRIGHT teenager Daniel Lock has raised more than $1300 for the Leukaemia Foundation.

He shaved off his ‘fro’ on Friday, March 18, as part of the foundation’s ‘World’s

Greatest Shave’ fundraiser.

Daniel said he was extremely proud that he was able to raise so much money, with the generous support of the local community, for people with leukaemia.

The amount he raised

was enough to provide free transport for people who are unable to drive after chemotherapy for two weeks.

Some notable donations came from the Bright Rotary Club and the CWA of Bright, who both contributed $200.

Chambers look ahead to new shire CEO

By LEAH ANDERSON-BYRNE INSPIRATIONAL and good communication with the community are just some of the qualities local chamber of commerce presidents are hoping for in the next Alpine Shire chief executive officer.

Council is on the hunt for a new CEO, with incumbent Charlie Bird to leave when his contract ends in July.

Mr Bird, who was appointed to the role in August 2017 on a five year contract, confirmed last month that he will not be seeking a contract extension.

Mayor Sarah Nicholas said a recruitment firm will be appointed shortly to recruit the next CEO and allow a smooth transition.

The Myrtleford Times/Alpine Observer contacted chambers of commerce - who play a critical role in the business vibrancy across Myrtleford, Bright and Mt Beauty communities - to see what they are looking for in a new CEO.

 QUALITIES SOUGHT: Myrtleford Chamber of Commerce president Jim Van Geet is hoping for an “inspirational” leader.

MYRTLEFORD Chamber of Commerce president Jim Van Geet said there were several qualities required for the job.

“It’s the same as anybody in any leadership role; it’s a difficult job and you need to be an overall good leader,” he said.

“A few I think are important is being inspirational; having the ability to inspire their staff to achieve the best outcomes as well as the public’s confidence in council.

“They need to be well rounded and have the ability to view issues from all perspectives and adapt decisively.

“They need to be passionate about achieving effective and efficient outcomes for the shire and be results-oriented.

“Things change quickly so they’ve got to recognise a changing environment and adapt well.

“They need to have good critical thinking and make good decisions based on clear thoughts and foresight.

“They need to be trustworthy, reliable and optimistic so they can inspire loyalty both to and from the council workers as well as the public.

“No one person can do everything so they need to be able to inspire others and recognise their differences.”

Mr Van Geet said Myrtleford has been “fortunate to see some projects approved and funding appointed” but they now need to see them go ahead.

“Words are good but actions speak louder,” he said.

“Council has been moving in a good direction for a long time and the feedback from people new to town and tourists has been great.

“Myrtleford’s been going ahead in leaps and bounds and it’s good to see so we just want that trajectory to continue.”

BRIGHT Chamber of Commerce president Rupert Shaw said he was looking for a “strong leader” to take on the role.

“There’s two aspects to that; first is facilitating councillors and community to come up with a view of what ‘good’ looks like for the shire in a three, five, 10 year plus time frame,” he said.

“Being able to communicate a vision to residents of the shire about where we should be aiming and that covers everything from commerce to health to environment to sport to leisure.

“Helping councillors implement desired actions quickly and then creating a really high performing team who can deliver all those actions; recruiting the right people and creating an environment where good people want to stay and thrive.

“Then you can start to put in a load of metrics around performance you want to achieve in all aspects of customer service.

“The second aspect is being guided by a vision and having a strong investment plan to match the population growth of the

shire and where you want to go as a shire.”

The growing popularity of the shire as a place to live was a key challenge that Mr Shaw hoped the next CEO will tackle.

“They’ll need to develop a vision and policies to deal with growing popularity of the shire; we’ll need more people, more construction and need to ask what do you want the shire to look like,” he said.

“It will be different for each of the towns but we need to start with a clear vision that works with the desires and ideas of the community and making sure it expands in the right direction.”

MT BEAUTY Chamber of Commerce president Glenys Peacock said the new CEO will need be able to manage people and communicate well.

“The CEO needs to manage people, deal with communications from various political and government organisations and then it comes down to councillors as well with the direction they give the CEO,” she said.

“There’s a lot of changes and there’s going to be a lot of growth in next five to 10 years within the shire.

“A lot of infrastructure needs to be thought about with development of land parcels being released and lot of issues within the shire with an increase in tourism.

“The shire needs to be mindful of their customers, just like businesses do; sometimes I’m concerned that government agencies don’t consider themselves a service industry but they are serving the community and we should be the best interest.

“The Alpine Shire as a whole is up for a very challenging next five years with new land releases, roads and, when you add an extra 250 houses to a town, that’s going to impact enormously the whole feel; the way we live will change and we need to be proactive now.”

improvements roll on towards winter MT HOTHAM Resort Management is taking advantage of the recent good weather to drive progress on major infrastructure works currently taking place.

The Alpine Gateway multi-level carpark is on track to be operational by the start of the 2022 snow season, with full completion of the new visitor facility due prior to the 2023 snow season.

AUSTRALIAN Museums and Galleries Association (AMaGA) Victoria plans to establish temporary digitisation and conservation assessment studios in the Alpine Shire for four weeks in May and June.

The aim of this project is to help future proof collections by reminding organisations and individuals of the importance of digitising and documenting items important to them.

Public information sessions about the project will be held today at Mount Beauty Neighbourhood Centre from 2pm and tomorrow at the Myrtleford Neighbourhood Centre from 2pm.

connect and provided an opportunity for plenty of fun and laughter”.

Local roads, infrastructure aid

ALPINE Shire Council has seen a $710,300 boost to the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program, announced in last week’s federal budget.

Alpine Shire Mayor Sarah Nicholas welcomed the extension to the program.

“As a small rural council, government grants support us to deliver important projects and initiatives,” she said.

“The Local Roads and

Community Infrastructure Program in particular provides a significant contribution to the projects we deliver for the community.”

Council has received more than $2.9 million across the previous three rounds of the program, using the funding to deliver key projects such as the Big Hill Carpark Upgrade, Dinner Plain Bus Shelters and Town Entrance Access and Myrtleford Murray to Mountains Rail Trail Upgrade.

“Current projects such as the Tawonga Caravan Park Upgrade and Alpine View Children’s Centre Expansion are supported by round three of these grants,” Cr Nicholas said.

“We’re thankful to the Australian Government for this funding, which provides a significant boost for the community and local businesses.”

The government said that strong advocacy from the Australian Local Govern-

ment Association (ALGA) and Australia’s 537 councils helped deliver the $500 million extension of the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program.

ALGA president Linda Scott said this extension would help councils deliver more libraries, sporting facilities, community centres, bike paths and playgrounds in their local communities, providing free and low-cost activities and delivering cost-of-living savings for all Australians.

“Over the past two years councils have worked with the Commonwealth to deliver thousands of new local projects through this program,” Cr Scott said.

“Working with the Commonwealth, local governments have made our cities and regions better places to live and work, and created thousands of new jobs in a tough economic climate.

“Local governments appreciate any funding, but

it will be critical for whomever forms the next Commonwealth Government to increase Local Roads and Community Infrastructure funding that will help us to roll out new projects across our nation.”

While acknowledging the federal budget’s strong focus on providing immediate and short-term cost of living relief, Cr Scott said increased funding to local government is needed to provide longerlasting benefits.

Gala opening a success for gallery’s latest show SOME 85 people attended the gala opening celebrations of the 60th Bright Autumn Art Show at the Bright Art Gallery on Friday night.

All were treated to the wonderful sight of 520 high quality paintings, as well as delicious finger food and pleasant music.

After a welcome and thankyou by gallery president Steve McCall, guest speaker Jim Delany entertained with interesting stories of the early days of the art show - such as when the Victorian Governor arrived to open the show in an opentopped limousine!

He also outlined the many improvements made to the gallery since its inception in 1986.

Jim is the grandson of Annie Delany who did so much work in organising some of the early shows, and in instigating the purchase of the first gallery building.

Then it was down to the serious business of announcing the various winners.

There was universal agreement that judge Regina Hona was confronted with a difficult task - but the exclamations of delight as each

painting was unveiled would suggest she had done an excellent job.

The grand winning painting was an oil by popular Hansonville artist Cathy Ellem, entitled “Seeking assurance” - which will become part of the gallery’s permanent collection.

The other winners were as follows: Best Oil: “Venice” by Craig Davy, Mt Eliza; Best Acrylic: “Pied Piper” by Liz Williams, Stratford; Best Watercolour: “The hills of Zeneggen-Switzerland” by Terry Jarvis, Bendigo; Best Pastel: “On His Throne” by Astrid Bruning, Wodonga; Best Monochrome: “Lead Balloon” by Linda Weil, Melbourne; Best other media: “Guns and Roses” by Libby Schreiber, Yarrawonga; Best small painting: “Islands” by Madeleine Symansk; Best Alpine Shire scene: “Cathedral Afternoon, Mt Buffalo” by Stephen McCall, Bright.

Several highly commended awards were also made.

The exhibition runs for another six weeks, open daily from 10am to 4pm at the Bright Art Gallery.

“I didn’t want to see any young girls having to go without hair,” Abigail said.

Climate change a hot topic

By MARTIN DAVIS CLIMATE change will be the hot topic at an event in Bright next week.

Upper Ovens Valley Landcare in collaboration with the North East Catchment Management Authority (NECMA) is running the event the assist people in make knowledge-based decisions on how to modify the farming to adapt to climate changes.

Regional agricultural Landcare facilitator at NECMA, Lachlan Campbell, said there will be a conservation about how climate change has impacted the environment over the last 50 years and what it’s going to look like in the next 20 years.

“The talk will be mainly focusing on agriculture and landscape change, with a key part analysing and understanding data from the CSIRO, while also finding out from the people there what they are interested in,” he said.

Future rainfall, and the potential of slightly warmer winters and how it will affect different industries will also be discussed.

Upper Ovens Valley Landcare president Peter Jacobs said the event is one of many around climate change the group is working with Sustainability Upper Ovens to run and provide greater awareness.

Don’t Rock the Boat Budget 2022-23 The 2022-23 Federal Budget is a safe, ballot box friendly Budget as expected with a focus on cost of living, home ownership, and health.

Key initiatives include: A 6 month, 50% reduction in fuel excise with effect from midnight Budget night A $420 cost of living tax offset for low and middle income earners from 1 July 2022 A one-off $250 economic support payment to some social security payment recipients For small business, a $120 tax deduction for every $100 spent on training employees and digital adoption But, it is also a Budget that drives digitization. Not just to support innovation but to streamline compliance, create transparency and more readily identify anomalies. Single touch payroll was the first step, the PAYG instalment system, trust compliance, and payments to contractors are next.

Importantly there has been no change to the Instant Asset Write Off albeit renamed Temporary Full expensing and is available at this stage until June 30 2023.

Federal Budget 2022-23 summary Tax measures The major tax-related measures announced in the Budget included: Low- and middle-income tax offset (LMITO) increased by $420 for 2021-22 - a one-off $420 cost of living tax offset for the 2021-22 income year will see the low- and middle-income tax offset (LMITO) increased up to a maximum of $1,500 for 2021-22 only (up from $1,080). Importantly, the Government did not announce an extension of the LMITO beyond 2021-22 when it is legislated to cease.

No changes to the personal tax rates for 2022-23 - the Stage 3 personal income tax cuts remain unchanged and will commence in 2024-25 as already legislated.

Small business 20 per cent deduction boost for skills training and digital adoption - businesses with turnover less than $50 million will receive a 20 per cent uplift on deductions for eligible expenditure on external training courses and digital technology. The 20 per cent boost will apply to eligible expenditure incurred from 7:30pm on 29 March 2022 until 30 June 2024 (for skills training) and 30 June 2023 (for digital adoption).

Carbon credit and biodiversity certificate income - the proceeds from the sale of Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) and biodiversity certificates generated from on-farm activities will be treated as primary production income for the purposes of the Farm Management Deposits (FMD) scheme and the tax averaging provisions from 1 July 2022.

Superannuation measures The superannuation measures include: Super pension drawdown 50 per cent reduction extended to 2022-23 - the temporary 50 per cent reduction in minimum annual payment amounts for superannuation pensions and annuities will be extended by a further year to the 2022-23 income year.

Super Guarantee rate unchanged - the Budget did not contain any change to the legislated Super Guarantee rate rise from 10 per cent to 10.5 per cent for 2022-23.

Other measures Fuel excise temporary reduction - the fuel excise will be reduced by 50 per cent for six months, starting from midnight on Budget night. $250 cost of living payment - the Government will make a $250 one-off cost of living payment in April 2022 to eligible pensioners, welfare recipients, veterans and concession card holders.

Apprentice wage subsidy extension - the Budget confirmed the extension of the Boosting Apprenticeship Commencement (BAC) and Completing Apprenticeship Commencements (CAC) wage subsidies by three months to 30 June 2022.

Budget highlights Temporary cost of living measures Excise and excise equivalent customs duty rate on petrol, diesel, and all other fuel and petroleum-based products, except aviation fuels, will be reduced by 50% for 6 months.

Small business Small businesses (with aggregated annual turnover less than $50 million) will be able to deduct a bonus 20 per cent of the cost of business expenses and depreciating assets that support digital uptake, up to $100,000 of expenditure per year.

Small businesses will also have access to a bonus 20 per cent deduction for the cost of external training courses delivered to their employees.

Family Paid Parental Leave scheme integrating existing schemes to give eligible families’ access to up to 20 weeks leave to use in ways that suit their specific circumstances.

News from Upper Kiewa Valley FOUR of our local residents took part in the annual ‘Keenagers’ tournament at the Albury/Wodonga Table Tennis Centre on March 25 and 26.

The ‘Keenager’ concept is open to anyone over 50 years of age.

The tournament draws entrants from Wangaratta, Moe, Drouin, Mornington, Traralgon and Ballarat, in addition to those from the host club.

The weekend is competitive but is played in a friendly spirit, with competitors returning each year to participate and play in in various divisions.

Local identities Wil and Ron Gallagher, Lynne Forke and Sandra Eldridge competed.

Ron, partnered by an Albury member, reached the semi finals of the men’s B division.

Lynne partnered with Wil and they reached the semi finals of the ladies’ A grade (a return from Lynne in an earlier round defied belief, receiving a very warm ovation from those watching, the chances of that shot ever being played again are nil!).

Sandra, partnered by a lady from the host club, was successful in winning the ladies’ A grade competition.

Kenny, as he is affectionately known, was born in Broken Hill where the Sturt Desert Pea grows really well in the wild.

Living in Melbourne before moving to Mt Beauty, Kenny grew the flower there, much to everyone’s amazement.

Last November he planted seeds in an old washing machine tub in his backyard and they are now flowering.

Toilet 20 years in the making

By ANITA COIA FEDERAL Government funding of $61,110 through the Black Summer Bushfire Recovery Grants Program will finally allow the Harrietville Museum to install a fully accessible toilet for visitors and volunteers.

Slated to be completed by June 1, the toilet will provide an on-site facility for the first time, alleviating the need to cross the Great Alpine Road to use the toilets at the community hall.

“At the moment, we often need to close the museum to escort kids or elderly so the installation of the toilet will be a big help for visitation to the museum,” says Robyn Downey, president of the Harrietville Historical Socie-

ty, which runs the museum.

Previous attempts to secure approval for a toilet over the past 20 years have failed due to the inability to find a design that worked within current planning rules.

However the Alpine Shire has now approved the use of a ‘pump out’ septic system, which is emptied regularly and does not require a large land allowance for a drainfield.

The Harrietville Museum is open from December to May each year, and its extensive collection of local historical records and artefacts attracts a large number of visitors to the town.

The museum’s collection spans the region’s many historical facets, including the

gold rush, the significant contribution of the Chinese miners during this period, logging, and the growth of the snow industry.

Local volunteers from Harrietville and surrounding towns including Bright, devote their time to cataloguing the collection and staffing the museum during its opening hours, which are Saturday and Sunday 12pm - 3pm.

The museum also opens by appointment for a small fee of $20 or $50 for bus tours.

“As well as providing an important and interesting repository for our town’s rich history, the museum gives many of our locals a sense of purpose, and we really value their contributions,” said Robyn.

By MARTIN DAVIS STAFF and students at Myrtleford P-12 are collecting bottle caps to help children with a disability.

Year 4 students at the school are supporting the Envision Hands Initiative which involves collecting bottle caps to not only help reduce waste into landfill, but recycles the tops into prosthetics for kids with a disability.

Myrtleford P-12 teacher and organiser, Peter Fullwood, said the project is helping teach kids the importance of recycling, as well show empathy to fellow kids who are in different circumstances to them.

“This initiative is to create prosthetic limbs by using soft plastics, especially those from soft drink,

water and milk bottle caps and for the school sustainability and environmental initiative which is a major part of the curriculum,” he said.

The school is encouraging students from the school to bring in the bottle caps.

Alpine Health is also supporting the Envision Hands project and it anticipates shipping off hundreds of kilos of bottle caps to the Melbourne Collection Centre in the near future.

The local community is encouraged to participate if they wish by donating bottle caps to Alpine Health sites in Myrtleford, Bright and Mt Beauty, as well as directly to the Myrtleford P-12 campus.

The plastic bottle caps should be delivered washed, with all residue removed.

Native fish boost in the Kiewa River NORTH East Catchment Management Authority (CMA) has welcomed a $398,888 grant from the Australian Government’s Murray-Darling Healthy Rivers Program to support a project to protect threatened fish species through works undertaken in the Kiewa River.

Chief executive officer, Katie Warner, said the project would deliver direct instream and riparian habitat improvements including resnagging along 15km of the river, to help trout cod, Macquarie perch and Murray cod.

Ms Warner said a major component of the program would be community involvement, with significant input to the project by the Kiewa and Wodonga Urban Landcare Groups, fishing clubs, First Nations groups and adjoining property owners.

She said the Kiewa River had been identified as a key waterway for the immediate roll out of the Macquarie perch re-introduction programs.

The Kiewa River grant comes after North East CMA received $588,880 from the Murray-Darling Healthy Rivers Program in February for a similar program to enhance native fish habitat in the Lower Ovens River and protect the Lower Ovens wetland complex.

Free bootcamp for young farmers MYRTLEFORD will host a free Young Farmer Business Bootcamp this month.

The two-day bootcamp, on Friday, April 29 and May 6, is being run by Agriculture Victoria to help farmers identify and manage business risk and develop a business plan to grow their business and confidence in a future in agriculture.

The camps are also an opportunity for young and emerging farm managers to connect with like-minded and motivated people.

The event, being presented by Rutherglenbased Ag Vic farm business economist Paul Blackshaw, will cover cash flow budgeting skills, understanding risk management and planning, and business goals.

Nic raising awareness of autism through music FOR Bright local Nic Jean, playing music is her way of raising awareness about her experience with autism.

Creating and sharing her music is also a way for her to “process life and my emotions” and spread “love, peace, joy and hope”.

“My music has a very gentle, soothing acoustic sound, through my song writing, singing and baritone ukulele,” she said.

“I self-record and share my music mostly online as a gift... this allows me to create at a gentle pace that I have the capacity for.

“Being autistic allows me the special ability to write directly from my heart, to share feelings and experiences through song in a very open and vulnerable style.

“The unique way my brain processes the world and communicates means my songs are like a deep, direct conversation, which aim to share love, hope, positivity, and connection.

Nissan Patrol Ti-L LIKE a couple of Sumo wrestlers from their native Japan, Toyota LandCruiser and Nissan Patrol have been grappling with each other for more than 70 years.

The SUV (Sports Utility) tag really doesn’t fit these two giants, they are oldstyle, off-roading 4WDs. They’re right up-to-date in terms of engineering and safety but lag behind in technology, although in the case of the latest LandCruiser that has been addressed with the new 300 Series.

The latest, sixth generation, Patrol has been here since late 2019 with a minor upgrade for the MY2022 version that we’ve just tested.

Patrol is only available in two premium variants, the Ti and Ti-L, priced at $82,160 and $95,115 (plus-on road costs), respectively. Both are powered by the same 5.6-litre V8 petrol engine with seven-speed automatic transmission.

The ‘L’ in Ti-L stands for Luxury, not long wheelbase, with extra features including a powered sunroof; roof rails; powered tailgate; automatic headlight levelling; puddle illumination light; driver’s seat memory; three-zone air conditioning; heated/cooled front seats; rear-seat video screens; premium sound system; and front row centre console cool box.

Sidesteps are almost a must for a vehicle of this size especially for smaller passengers. Wheels are 18inch all-terrain alloys.

INTERIOR Unsurprisingly there’s lots of space in every direction inside the Patrol although, as is normally the case, the third-row seats are best suited to children. Patrol Ti is a 2-3-3 eight-seater while the Ti-L is a 2-3-2 seven-seater.

All seats are leather.

Access to the third row is made easier with the second-row seats able to fold and tumble forward.

With the third row of seatbacks in place there’s 467 litres of storage space, expandable to 1413 litres with the third-row folded flat.

That increases to a vansized 2632 litres with the middle row rolled forward against the backs of the front seats.

The front seats are large, supportive and very comfortable. Both driver and front passenger get eightway electric adjustment as well as heating and cooling. The driver’s seat has a memory function.

There is a deep centre console cool box which can be accessed from either front or second-row seats.

The instrument cluster is

clear and uncomplicated, and that’s just the way we like it. Everything is easy to find and operate with minimal distraction.

ENGINES / TRANSMISSIONS Power for Patrol comes from a direct-injected, naturally aspirated V8 petrol engine that delivers 298 kW of power at 5800 rpm, and 560 Nm of peak torque 90 per cent of which is available from 1600 revs.

Power is put to ground through an advanced seven-speed automatic transmission and a sophisticated, electronically controlled, all mode 4x4 system with settings for Auto, 4H, 4L, diff lock and hill descent control.

The centre console mounted-control knob also incorporates Patrol’s terrain select system, featuring on road, snow, sand and rock settings for the serious offroad adventurer.

SAFETY Standard safety features include six airbags with curtain bags covering all three seat rows; Intelligent Around-View Monitor with Moving Object Detection; Hill Descent Control and Hill Start Assist; two IsoFix child restraint anchorage points; front and rear adjustable active headrests; Intelligent Cruise Control; Intelligent Forward Collision Warning; Lane Departure Warning; Intelligent Lane Intervention; Blind Spot Warning and Intervention.

There’s an 8-inch touchscreen with satellite navigation and traffic monitoring system but other features are limited and, unusually, there is no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto compatibility.

The audio system has CD/DVD, AM/FM radio (no DAB+), MP3 and USB / iPod connectivity with Bluetooth phone and audio streaming.

By EWAN KENNEDY HONDA Australia has confirmed the initial details for the all-new HR-V, featuring advanced two-motor e:HEV (hybrid electric vehicle) powertrain technology for the first time on this model and the latest generation Honda SENSING driver-assist and active safety systems.

New HR-V will be sold Downunder in two specification levels with two different powertrains.

The Vi X grade powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine.

The e:HEV L grade fitted with a two-motor hybrid powertrain.

1915: Letters from far away, Part 1

S the calendar year 1915 commenced, the First World War had been under way since August 3, 1914 when Great Britain and the Empire declared war on Germany and its allies.

Recruitment of volunteers for the Australian Expeditionary Force had begun in earnest by late that month.

Locally, medical examinations of recruits were performed by Dr Sutton prior to joining others at Broadmeadows Army Training Camp.

A quick return home for farewells was followed by embarkation by troopship to an Egyptian encampment.

During 1915, families began submitting ‘Letters from Our Soldiers’ to the Myrtleford Mail & Whorouly Witness for publication.

It became a conduit to convey personal experiences and news of events with family and friends.

Of course, the “Mail” reports were blended with news of many other local matters, some of which are also included below.

In January, the ongoing drought had caused the Myrtle (now Barwidgee) Creek and many township wells to dry up.

A week-long bushfire at Buffalo Creek and Ovens Vale had started on W.A. Paul’s property and Donald Fletcher, son of A.W Fletcher of Cropper’s Creek left for Broadmeadows to join the 3rd Expeditionary Force.

In February, a grand promenade, concert and dance was held at the opening of the Buffalo River Hall and the organist at St John’s Anglican Church, Whorouly, Mrs T Spink, was presented with a marble clock for her invaluable service.

Hop picking at O’Sullivan’s gardens had commenced and Charles Carthew of the 8th Lighthorse, training at Broadmeadows, had been appointed 1st Lieutenant.

In March, construction of a public hall at Ovens Vale had commenced and the vestry committee of St Paul’s Church had commenced compiling a Roll of Honour of those who had volunteered to serve the King and Empire.

There were over 30 names to date.

In April, kangaroos were invading Myrtleford and rabbit trapping was in full swing; large numbers of the pest were being sent away from the local railway station daily.

It would take until May for news to arrive of the ANZAC landing on April 25.

In May, the “Mail” reported 1162 casualties in Dardanelles fighting, including 350 Victorians; “The realities of war are being brought home to us very forcibly” it said.

opening ceremony and dance at the new Ovens Vale Hall.

On May 20, Private Joseph McKeogh, son of the local police constable, and Private Fred Chaplin were reported as wounded.

On May 27, a report stated that “Private Ted McMaster of Ovens Vale has been wounded” as was Private Richard E. Goodfellow “who enlisted here and resided at Buffalo River”.

On June 10, as light falls of snow occurred and miners reported promising crushings of quartz stone in the district, the “Mail” recorded the war’s first

local death in its public notices: “In loving memory of our dear son, Tom Willoughby, who died of wounds at the Dardanelles on 30th May, aged 20 years and 5 months.”

In a letter home from his hospital bed in Heliopolis in Egypt, published on June 17, Ted McMaster described the landing at the Dardanelles: “We went ashore at 8.00 am. I cannot explain what the landing was like.

The enemy’s trenches were 12 yards from the water’s edge. We jumped out of the boats and into the water and charged. A large number of our boys were killed in the boats and never got a chance to do their bit. I had a run of two days before I got hit.”

A letter from Driver Norton Wood on June 24 described sailing to Egypt: “We left Melbourne on March 21 and had no stop until

we reached Colombo. When we reached Suez, we were ordered to disembark, took our horses (450) off at 11.00, trucked and entrained them for Cairo by 9.00 at night.

Travelled all night and got there at 8.00 the following morning.Then a two-mile march to camp, had dinner, and got leave to see the city”.

At this mid-year point, advertisements for recruits for the Expeditionary Force appeared in the “Mail” as local Red Cross members continued to box up articles for despatch to our troops overseas.

The remainder of 1915 would eventually see the end of the Gallipoli Campaign and redeployment of troops to the Western Front and Palestine, but not before more casualties would impact the local community.

Bright locals dominate trail events at weekend’s Buffalo Stampede Festival SOME 1250 people took on the trails around Bright as part of Australia’s first sanctioned Sky Race, Buffalo Stampede Festival, over the weekend.

First held in 2014, the three day trail running festival is one of the most exciting on the running calendar, with a range of events catering to runners of all ages and abilities.

Featuring the all new 100km Bright Ultra course, which covers more than 5000 metres of elevation, solo runners and teams of two, three and four athletes took on the epic course, which ran from the alpine township of Bright, to the top of Mount Buffalo National Park and back.

Bright local, Joseph Dorf, 28, who designed the epic course, rolled in second to Morgan Lindqvist on Saturday night, while Lou Clifton was the first female over the line.

“Everyone I saw said they found the course really fun and inspiring; a bit more of an adventure than last year,” Dorf said.

“I think that landscape out there just gives you a boost.

“It’s completely different to anything else you get out there in Australia.”

With the event hosting double the number of participants to last year, Dorf said the difference in the community is noticeable.

“Once you include runner support teams, we saw around 3000 people in town just for the race,” he said.

“You don’t usually see the town swell, but this year you really felt it buzzing from the events.”

2021 female Grandslam winner and this year’s 10km SkySprint runner-up, Bright local, Lucy Clark, 36, said it was lovely to see the town back to what it was like pre-COVID.

WINNER: Bright runner Blake Hose won Sunday’s 42km SkyMarathon at Bright.

“Really seeing lots of people being able to get together and experience the amazing scenery and mountains that we have here - we haven’t been able to do that for a couple of years,” she said.

“It’s great for community spirit, but also great for our local businesses as well.”

Now in its ninth year, Buffalo

Stampede Festival is also the qualifying event for the World Skyrunning Championships 2022.

Winners of the 20km Sky Run and 42km SkyMarathon will be considered for the Australian New Zealand team.

President of Skyrunning Australia & New Zealand, David Byrne, said it was only fitting they

make it the key selection event for the World Championships.

“The Buffalo Stampede is the original Australian Skyrace,” he said.

“Runners who have done well at Buffalo in the past have gone on to compete at the pointy end in the Skyrunning World Champs.

Hose, 29, is another Bright local, who beat the competition, winning Sunday’s 42km SkyMarathon.

Having competed in the Sky Running World Championships in 2014 and 2016, Hose feels that being able to live and train in the Alpine Shire gives him an advantage over other competitors.

“Knowing the area quite well, knowing where you are on the course and knowing what’s to come helps you to measure your effort accordingly,” Hose said.

“Within Australia, there is no better place to train for skyrunning than here.”

Other events included the 20km SkyRun, 5km Family Trail Run and 2km Junior Trail Run. Event director, Nigel Preston, said this year’s unprecedented numbers just goes to show that, after two years of lockdowns and uncertainty, more and more people are keen to challenge themselves in the great outdoors.

“It’s only fitting to have it here in Bright, an adventure lover’s mecca and the Australian capital of trail running,” Preston said.

With so many small businesses in the Alpine region hit by the pandemic, Preston is proud to be able to help give the community a boost.

“Trail runners always bring along a great vibe,” he said.

“It’s a good feeling to be in the community when the Stampede runs, and it's nice to see local businesses humming over the course of the weekend.”

Barefoot Bowls series a smash success MYRTLEFORD Bowls Club wrapped up their Bendigo Bank Barefoot Bowls summer series last Tuesday evening, with the Whorouly Wobblers taking the win.

The Barefoot Bowls attracts about 66 players each week from the community and runs from November through until the end of March each season.

Teams of three players show their skills amid all the smiling faces each week but there can only be one overall winning team, and the ‘Wobblers’ (Graham Wood, Rod Newton and Tim McDonnel) with eight wins came out on top on a countback 121 points to 82 points - the runners up also secured eight wins while the third team had seven wins.

The club provided a continuous barbecue throughout the evening to further maximise social interaction and bring the citizens of Myrtleford and the region together.

Mark Ditcham, the local Bendigo Bank manager, was a special guest of the club on the night - the Bendigo Bank have generously sponsored the Barefoot Bowls program at Myrtleford in recent years and the windup gave both club members and all the community bowlers a chance to greet Mark and thank him for the bank’s generous support.

Myrtleford Bowls Club treasurer Marino Candusio said the support provided by the bank in invaluable to the club and their efforts.

“The Bendigo Bank have been wonderful supporters of this program at Myrtleford and it is clear as a Community Bank and us as a not-for-profit community club great things come from working together in small towns like ours,” he said.

World awaits young cricket star Cooper p Thomason runner-up p in A Reserve PLAYING cricket in England is just one of the hopes of Ovens Valley United young gun Cooper Thomason who came equal third in the WDCA A Reserve Player of the Year vote count.

Thomason finished with 10 votes alongside Bailey Frauenfelder (Yarrawonga Mulwala) and Zac Wallace (Wangaratta Magpies).

The 17 year old lefthander who attends Bright P-12 scored 230 runs at an average of 25.56 with a highest score of 67 and a strike rate of 54.8.

Although Thomason considers himself as a batsman he also managed to take 11 wickets for 151 runs from 45.1 overs at an average of 13.73 and an economy rate of 3.34.

“I prefer batting to bowling and I hope to be an opener next year,” he said “I bowl right-handed and just try and bowl as fast as I can.”

Thomason said he has played the last four years in A reserve, the last two splitting his time in A grade and hopes to continue his improvement.

“I would also like to travel a bit after I finish year 12,” he said.

“I spoke to Dan (Walker, OVUCC coach who comes from England) and he suggested I could go over to England; he reckoned it would be good for me and he would help arrange it.”

OVUCC’s A reserve team was knocked out in the semi-finals by Rovers United Bruck but Thomason described as a “pretty good” season.

He also credited much of his ability and improvement to his mum, Lauren.

“Mum has taken me down to the nets since I was little and has driven me virtually all over Victoria to play,” Thomason said.

“She loves it, and she stays and watches as well.”

Lions continue winnings ways over King Valley

By NATHAN DE VRIES WHOROULY’S A grade netballers kept their winning momentum going on Saturday, outclassing King Valley 55-29 at the Whorouly Recreation Reserve.

The Lions led at every break, widening the margin at every opportunity.

After a seven goal lead at quarter time turned into 10 goals by the half, Whorouly upped the pressure to produce a 14 goal third term to seemingly shut the Roos out of the match.

Whorouly coach Ebony Allen said the effort shown by the girls was extremely heartening.

“I’m really impressed with how we’ve started off the season so far, it’s been a really strong start for us which is really good,” she said.

“This week was another really good team effort, everyone played their role really well and it paid off with the score.

“Our first quarter is always a really strong quarter for us, so to come out and get that lead was good then we could hold on that and keep building each quarter.

“It was a really strong performance from Tayla (Allen) and Katie (Ivone) in the ring there, their shooting was really good.

“We were able to keep putting scores on the board and keep chipping away.”

While the goalies were doing their job down one end, the defenders kept pressure on the King Valley attack.

“Sally Wood, she had a really good game back in goal keeper, she earned herself third best on - she was getting intercepts and hands to every ball which put a lot of pressure on their shooters, and we were able to get turnovers and score down the other end,” Allen said.

“I’ve played with Sally before, who I’m defending with this year, so we slotted back in really well with each other.

“We know how each other play and with Grace Way out at wing defence, we’ve all played netball together the last couple of years, so it was a really good defensive trio.”

The Lions face their first away game this weekend, taking on Moyhu - the Hoppers currently sit at the bottom of the ladder with back-to-back losses to their names.

Allen said if the Lions can continue to produce games to a similar quality to their first two, she was confident Whorouly could make it three from three.

MYRTLEFORD’S dominance of the AWFA division one men’s competition ended on Sunday with a 4-0 loss to Boomers at home.

The Savoys were on top of the ladder heading into the match, with three wins from their past three games.

After conceding a penalty early in the first half, the Savoys kept the pressure on, fighting to a 1-0 deficit at half time.

“It was a really funny game on Sunday - I thought the scoreline did not reflect the game one bit at all,” Savoys coach Rob Caponecchia said.

“I said to the boys that we’re very much in the game, if we kept doing the right things in the second half hopefully we’ll get rewarded by scoring a goal but that didn’t eventuate.”

The young Savoys outfit conceded another three goals before the end of the match, but fought well without several big names such as Jesse Stevens and Vincenzo Paglia.

“They kept at it, the boys kept playing a nice brand of soccer, they just couldn’t penetrate the defence enough to cause Boomers any trouble in terms of scoring a goal,” Caponecchia said.

“At the end there, Boomers come away with the three points but I just said to the boys we’ve got to put our heads up again, we’re going to have these troughs in the season.

“We’re a young and developing

team, we had a lot of youngsters in there again - there’s going to be a little bit of inconsistency in the team because we have those players who haven’t played much together.

“We lost, but we’ve just got to move on to the next game now.”

Attention now turns to this weekend’s match against a powerhouse of the league in Albury United.

Caponecchia said the roller coaster season for the squad was just beginning.

“In our season, I feel, we’re going to have a few a highs, it’s going to be good, then we’re going to have some lows,” he said.

“Sunday was a low, but I wasn’t too disappointed - the scoreline was 4-0 but the way they played, the way they retained the ball, the movement of the ball was really, really good.

“United are a strong team, but we’ll keep playing these youngsters and see how they cope.”

WINNERS AND LOSERS Mountain Men keep momentum going IT’S been a flawless start to the O&K season for Bright’s senior footballers, the Mountain Men claiming two wins from two matches following Saturday’s 49 point win over North Wangaratta 14.9 (93) to 6.8 (44).

Bright kept the Hawks goalless in the first quarter while slotting five majors of their own to set the tone of the match early.

Assistant coach Nathan Smith said the performance from his boys from the first siren was commendable.

“We started pretty well, our pressure was good,” he said.

“It was a bit of a different side, I think we had six changed from Whorouly but the boys that came into the side really stepped up and played their role.

“We got off to a good start, and after quarter time we asked for a bit more pressure, more tackles and a better spread at the contest, and the boys did that.

“Our tackling all day was really good.

clearances, so the defenders played well all day - Fletcher Rosser was best on ground, he was really good playing off the half back line.

“Brad Nightingale, Dylan Bursill, the whole back six were outstanding all day. “ Bright accelerated from a 26 point margin at half time to a 49 point lead coming into the final quarter, with the Mountain Men not letting North Wangaratta breathe for a minute.

Tom Mullane-Grant had another exceptional day in front of goals, booting seven majors for the match to help his side pick up back-toback wins.

“You never know what’s going to happen, and going into a big game at Easter, we asked the boys to finish off strong - I think they got a couple of goals late but I think everyone was pretty spent

by then,” Smith said.

“I think we had 17 tackles in the last quarter which was a game high, so that was good.

“He’s (Mullane-Grant) pretty handy to have just sitting in the goals, he guards the space in front of him so well.

“He’s pretty hard to defend when it goes to ground he’s actually fairly creative and when he gets a set shot he rarely misses.”

The Mountain men have the bye this weekend, allowing as much time as possible for the club’s first home game and highlight of the season, the Easter Saturday clash against Tarrawingee.

“You’d get more at our Easter game than you would at a final the atmosphere is crazy there, so going into that with a bit of momentum is good,” Smith said.

“The boys will be up and about, have a week off but still train hard.

“I think we’ll have a few boys coming back so the selection will be hard next Thursday, but hopefully everything goes well at Easter and we can knock ‘Tarra’ off.”

Lions let themselves down in front of goals

By NATHAN DE VRIES ERRANT kicking in the forward 50 undid Whorouly’s senior footballers on Saturday, with a 9.14 (68) loss to King Valley’s 14.8 (92).

The Lions were powerful through the half back and midfield, but couldn’t do the deed when the ball game into their 50.

“We moved the footy really, really well, we had the majority of the play for most of the game - I felt we were the better team on the day but we just couldn’t convert down the other end,” Whorouly cocoach Jack Reiter said.

“We just kicked too many points, we just kicked ourselves out of the game in my eyes.

“We were 3.10 at half time and they had kicked 5.2 and instead of being just down we should’ve up by five or six goals by half time and really putting scoreboard pressure on them but we just couldn’t convert.

“Don’t get me wrong, kicking goals isn’t an easy thing to do, but to finish with 9.14, it definitely should’ve been the other way around if not 20 goals and three or four points.”

Missing key midfielders like Andy Newton and Sam Ferguson, players had to step up into new positions and performed admirably, an effort which almost got the Lions over the line at the death.

“Not having them doesn’t help so there were blokes playing new positions and getting turned around, but credit to them, they had a really good crack and it all worked out, it was just a pity we couldn’t convert on the scoreboard,” Reiter said.

“We hit the lead there in the last quarter, we were up by four points and it looked like we were going to have half a crack, then King Valley got two or three quick ones and that was the end of it.

“Credit to the blokes, we were running out of legs again, there were some niggles towards the end of the game which didn’t help with rotations.”

Reiter said newly minted Lions Will Allen and Xavier Cannizzaro will be assets in coming weeks, in particular against Moyhu this Saturday.

“Xavier was again phenomenal off the half back, he really stepped up again,” Reiter said.

“Will’s ball use was phenomenal, he holds his wing very well and gets a lot of kicks out there.

“Hopefully we can do a bit of work on goal kicking and get it right to come into Moyhu, and hopefully get our first win of the year.”

The reserves squad had a better time on the park, booting 19.10 (124) to King Valley’s 6.2 (38) for their second win from two rounds.

Saints edge out Rovers to win Bec’s 350th game THE season opening netball match for Myrtleford was a bit closer than many fans and players would’ve preferred, but a tremendous fightback from the Saints saw them take the points over Wangaratta Rovers 32-31 on the courts at McNamara Reserve on Saturday.

Following an evenly matched first term, the Rovers extended their lead incrementally as the match went on, from three goals at half time to a maximum of six towards the end of the match.

Saints coach Tina Way said to grind out a win with their back against the wall was a powerful sign the team has what it takes.

“It was a very defensive game and of course the weather set in, that made it difficult again for both teams to play the fast-flowing

netball that Ovens and Murray netball is,” she said.

“They got a bit of a jump on us in the last quarter and we were down by six, and the girls just fought hard and tried to do all the little things well to turn the ball over, and they did, and we snuck home with a one goal win.

“It was very relieving to take the win and know that we’ve got so much determination to get a win for each other and a win for the club.”

The win comes as a milestone for Bec Piazza, who played her 350th club game on Saturday, as

well as the first win for Morgan Byrne and Ellie Cooper for the Saints.

“Rebecca isn’t big on the fanfare and everything and we talked about before the game getting a win for us and the club and for Rebecca - she didn’t really want it to be a win for her,” Way said.

“It’s always great to know the she can look back on her milestone game and know we had a one goal win - it’s always better to have a win on a milestone than a loss, and a one goal win obviously is thrilling.

“Morgan Byrne, she shot well - I think there were phases where both goalies for Myrtleford shot well, then went quiet then shot well again but that’s exactly what Wang Rovers did as well.

“She shot well, she rebounded

and utilised her height, then Ellie Cooper took a couple of defensive intercepts then used her good ball skills to deliver it in to the goalies.”

The Saints will head into their match this weekend against Lavington with confidence, looking to correct the results the Panthers have delivered in previous years.

“It’s going to be a very tough game against Lavington - last year they were the biggest losses we had for the season,” Way said.

“Really once again we’ll be going out and looking at our combinations and trying to play well.

“Obviously we want the win and we want to be competitive and strong and play well against Lavington who have given us grief in the past.”

By NATHAN DE VRIES THE start to the Tallangatta and District Football League season was a rocky one for Dederang-Mount Beauty’s senior footballers, suffering defeat at the hands of Yackandandah at Butson Park on Saturday 14.21 (105) to the Bombers’ 10.5 (65).

The Bombers had a fantastic lead up to the season, but Yackandandah was prepared, with nine scoring shots to Dederang-Mount Beauty’s three putting the Roos ahead by 16 points by quarter time.

The second quarter provided some healthy scoring for the Bombers, slotting three majors, but the Roos kept the pressure on, breaking out to 25 points by the half.

Dederang-Mount Beauty perservered through the rest of the match, but Yackandandah were simply too good, kicking 7.7 in the second half to the Bombers’ 5.9.

Coach Damien Jones said Yackandandah was always going to prove a challenge, but the Bombers did not perform to the level they needed to. “’Yack’ played really well, they are a good team and will prove very hard to beat this year, but we definitely didn’t produce the football we know we are capable of,” he said.

“We are a new side together and we know we probably won’t produce our best football for a few more rounds.

“I was really happy with the way our back six stood up under a lot of pressure all day.

“At times, we showed when we play our style of footy we can move the ball end to end and result with shots on goal.”

New signings Connor Brodie and Jarrod Ardern impressed for the defeated Bombers, as well as 2021 best and fairest runner up Nick Hynes.

“We had six new players playing their first game for the club, and Frank Iaria played his first game in a fair few years,” Jones said.

“Connor Brodie was super down back, Lachie Brodie played his first game for the club and first senior game of football, he played in ruck all game and tried hard all day.

“Jarrod Ardern was someone who tried hard all game, when we put him in the middle he started to take the game on and move the ball really well - he also added a bit of defensive pressure in the middle which I thought we lacked for most of the day.”

The Bombers host Wahgunyah Lions this weekend at Mount Beauty - the Lions are coming off a 233 point deconstruction at the hand of Wodonga Saints.

By NATHAN DE VRIES MYRTLEFORD’S senior footballers pulled off one of the greatest season opening matches in living memory on Saturday, with the Saints downing Wangaratta Rovers in nail-biting fashion 9.11 (65) to 9.8 (62) at McNamara Reserve.

The Saints started strong, winning key midfield contests and feeding their forward line well through the first half, taking a 20-point lead heading into half time.

Myrtleford co-coach Dawson Simpson said the opening half of the season produced some truly great footy from his side.

“We were a bit slow to man up and allowed them on the outside a bit.

“It was a little bit disappointing but thankfully it was a bit more of an even fourth quarter and we were able to get the job done.”
