WINTER IS HERE, WITH A BLAST IT’S the first day of winter, and while the valleys have been soaked in up to an inch of rain, our alpine resorts have been blanketed in snow, which had Falls Creek local Jessie Neale, 26, jumping for joy yesterday.

The icy blast across the state has dropped temperatures below zero and brought widespread snow to Falls Creek, Mt Hotham and Dinner Plain.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, more snowfall is expected at resorts today and Friday, into early next week, with the heaviest falls of up to a foot expected on Sunday.

These natural falls, which could bring up to half a metre in total to the resorts, together with ongoing snowmaking, are buoying expectations for a great start to the ski season Saturday week.

By MARTIN DAVIS and LEAH ANDERSON-BYRNE THE push for new aged care facilities in Bright remains high on the political agenda, with returned Indi Independent MP Helen Haines seeking to meet with Australia’s new health, rural health and aged care federal ministers to champion the cause.

Dr Haines has been advocating strongly for the $26 million in federal funding needed to deliver new facilities under the proposed $40m Bright Health Precinct.

“When the new ministers responsible for health, rural health and aged care are sworn in, I will write to them and invite them to meet with me and their Victorian counterparts in Bright, as I did with the previous Minister for Rural

Health David Gillespie,” Dr Haines said.

“The new Federal Government is also expected to hand down its own budget in October and I will prioritise advocacy to the government to fund a new aged care as part of the budget process.

“High quality aged care in Indi is a huge priority for me.”

Both Labor’s Shadow Minister for Aged Care, Claire O’Neill, and Shadow Minister for Health and Ageing, Ged Kearney, are

already fully briefed on the project, with Ms Kearney having toured the facility in March when she noted its need within the community.

Alpine Health chief executive officer Nick Shaw last month confirmed that with the Victorian Government recently committing $1.5 million to allow the Bright Health Precinct masterplan progress to detailed planning, the only limitation on new aged care services for Bright remained the lack of capi-

tal investment to build the project.

The Bright District Hospital Health Precinct Development seeks to colocate hospital, aged care, medical and allied health services, and health education services in Bright and surrounds.

It will include a new 35 bed high care aged care facility with the potential for additional units leading to 49 beds.

CRACKPOTS HELP CELEBRATE 100 YEARS OF MYRTLEFORD GOLF

By MARTIN DAVIS THE Myrtleford Crackpots have unveiled a new mosaic to help celebrate Myrtleford Golf Club’s 100-year anniversary.

The mosaic resembles the golf club’s logo and is in memory of one of the founders of the Myrtleford Golf Club, Ebe Schlapp, who was part of the club for more than 50 years.

Ebe’s daughter, Francis Jackson, was at the clubhouse last Friday for the official unveiling and was delighted her father, who passed away 50 years ago, was being recognised.

“We were quite young when he passed but we always knew how much golf meant to him,” she said.

“We were bought up with golf.”

Golf has continued to live on in the Schlapp family, with everyone playing golf, but not to Ebe’s level.

Myrtleford Golf Club president George Brown said he is glad there is a permanent representation of the centennial celebrations.

“We are grateful for the work the Crackpots have done and also for the Schlapp family funding all of the materials which were required to create this beautiful mosaic,” Mr Browne said.

“The artwork will forever be there and will hopefully bring more people into the club when they are driving through the area.”

By MARTIN DAVIS MYRTLEFORD’S charitable community fund, GROW Myrtleford+, was officially launched last Thursday, during the Myrtleford Chamber of Commerce’s special businesses’ networking dinner.

Started by a group of Myrtleford locals as a subfund of the Into Our Hands Community Foundation last year, the fund seeks to support

Charitable communityy fund about investingg in Myrtleford’s y future and foster growth in the local community by generating funding which it can share through its grants program.

A significant donation from a local Myrtleford family, together with funding raised at a cattle sale last year, has provided some funds which hopes to be grow on the back of more donations and local support.

“The aim of investing money into the town is about improving the sustainability, liveability and community connections

“If people are wanting to get involved with Grow Myrtleford+ we would love them to come up with fundraising ideas and let the advisory committee know.

“The other way is to looking at donating through the Into Our Hands website.

“With other charities elsewhere you are unsure where the money is going

and if it’s delivered, but this way people are able to give locally to where people work and live.

“It is a real opportunity to see the value of their philanthropy and the value of their donations going in the community.”

Weather didn’t deter people from the market

By MARTIN DAVIS MYRTLEFORD locals and visitors came out to enjoy the May edition of the Myrtleford Farmers’ Market last Saturday, even with some last-minute cancellations from stallholders.

With the winter chill settling in, people took the opportunity to fill the empty spaces in their winter gardens with the final appearance from Ovens Farm and Buffalo River Nursery till spring.

Market coordinator Louise Benini said cooking demonstrations with Patrizia Simone won’t be happening in the next couple of markets as she will be taking a well-earned break.

“In the meantime, we will continue to select hero ingredients and offer recipes, with samples at the relevant stalls,” she said.

“This month we are showcasing hazelnuts with delicious biscuits, with recipe being found at Ovens River Nuts stall.”

Celebrating Myrtleford Golf Club’s centenary

Planting the seed of Anzac respect OVENS Valley state MP Tim McCurdy is encouraging primary schools in the Alpine Shire to apply for the chance to receive one of the 100 seedlings available from the famous Lone Pine tree from Gallipoli.

The Lone Pine battlefield was named for the solitary Turkish pine that stood there at the start of the Anzac assault in August 2015.

Mr McCurdy said the seedlings project is endorsed through RSL Victoria, specifically the Friends of Gallipoli.

“Successful primary school applicants will receive the seedlings in the beginning of 2023 to celebrate the Centenary of the Republic of Turkey,” he said Schools apply by registering to the Friends of Gallipoli chairman John Basarin via email: chairman. fogi@gmail.com.

AFTER many months of planning, 130 people helped kicked off celebrations of the Myrtleford Golf Club’s 100 years anniversary at the club’s centennial dinner last Saturday night.

The club took the theme of golf to the next level with greens and fairways on the tables and golf clubs hanging from the ceiling.

Club president George Browne thanked everyone who has contributed to what has become the Myrtleford Golf Club.

“Twenty members of the club have become life members over the years and they have left their footprints on the development on the course and the clubhouse,” he said.

“We were privileged to have the family of the first life member Ebe Schlapp present, with his daughter Francis reflecting on the life Ebe had....from going to the First World War and setting up a walnut orchard at Gapsted and his massive contribution to our golf club.”

The dinner saw many special guests, with Golf Australia senior development manager Mark Bamford speaking on behalf of the guests, complementing the club and the course.

Jan Rosebury gave a presentation on the history of the golf club.

“In June 1922, our club was formed with an 8-hole course built around the old cemetery, and a tin shed being used as the clubhouse, with the club

moving to its present site in 1935,” she said.

“The current clubhouse was built by the Heather brothers - Colin, Charlie and Neil - in 1940 with the help of their brother-in-law Gilbert Thomson.”

The night was capped off with a presentation from former Australian Test cricketer and commentator Damien Fleming, which Mr Browne described as a hilarious talk about his life as an Australian cricketer.

“Fleming talked about everything from why he is called the bowlologist as he perfected the art of swinging the ball and how he is the only Australian to take a hat trick on debut,” Mr Browne said.

“He is undoubtedly a comic figure on the public speaking circuit, his stories about the last over he bowled in the 1999 semi-final tie against South Africa and the dropped catch by the late Shane Warne, which denied him his second hat-trick, would make anybody laugh.”

Mr Browne finished by thanking everyone who came to celebrate the club’s 100th anniversary.

“As the club goes into the next decade, it is done with a spirit of enthusiasm, not forgetting all of those past members who laid the foundation of the beautiful club we have today,” he said.

The club’s centennial celebrations will continue in the coming weeks with the resurrection of the Men’s vs Ladies challenge on Thursday, June 9 and a Centennial Dress up day on Saturday, June 11.

Acting CEO enjoys first week in role

By MARTIN DAVIS ALAN Clark has completed his first week as the acting chief executive officer of the Alpine Shire Council.

Outgoing CEO Charlie Bird finished up on May 20 and Mr Clark will be in the role for up to 12 months while a selection panel consisting of independent chairperson David Preiss, Mayor Sarah Nicholas, and councillors Tony

Keeble and Kelli Prime search for a permanent successor.

Mr Clark said last week was quite busy spending a lot of time reading and talking to people to understand all the current issues.

“I’m starting to feel like I’m moving into the role after spending a couple of week shadowing Charlie when he was here,” he said.

“Most of all I’m realising just how fantastic the Alpine staff group are...

they’re very capable and there are lots of councils who would be jealous of the teams we have here.”

Mr Clark is preparing for his first Alpine Shire Council meeting next Tuesday, June 7.

“We have got a fair bit coming out of the upcoming meeting with a budget which will be finalised and many different planning matters, which will have quite a bit of public interest around it,” he said.

Myrtleford bikers raise $11,000 for men’s health

By MARTIN DAVIS DISTINGUISHED Myrtleford Gentlemen have rode across the Alpine region and raised more than $11,000 for the Movember Foundation.

Twenty-seven riders dusted off their bikes and suited up for the charity ride on Sunday, May 22 to raise funds for men’s mental health and suicide prevention programs and research on prostate cancer.

They started at Foodworks before riding to Mount Beauty and finishing at the Happy Valley Hotel.

Myrtleford organiser Sebastion Goff said the ride was a good day out, with everyone enjoying the ride for a good cause.

“We raised over $11,000 for men’s health which is a great outcome for a rural community,” he said.

Delays, but Alpine View expansion back on track

By MARTIN DAVIS IT’S had delays, but expansion of the Alpine View Children’s Centre in Bright is now progressing well towards completion in October.

The $1 million plus project being bankrolled by both state and federal funding - will increase facilities and significantly bolster the number of kinder and early childhood places available at the Deacon Avenue facility.

Alpine Shire Mayor Sarah Nicholas said construction works to expand the Alpine View Children’s Centre in Bright are progressing well, although the

“We are really proud of the way everyone is working together to bring this project to life for our youngest community members.”

The centre provides quality early childhood education and care services to the community.

While the construction is underway, current enrolment numbers will be maintained.

Cr Nicholas said the vital project will increase the number of places at AVCC and boost centre facilities.

“The expanded centre will include additional playroom spaces within the main building,” she said.

“The bulk of the delays encountered on the project are thankfully now behind us, and works are expected to progress smoothly towards the revised completion date of October 2022.

Alpine Children’s Services chief executive officer Tanya Scott said the progress is exciting.

What a change born in Indi DISATISFIED with the status quo in 2013, I was one of the 425 people who took part in the 53 Kitchen Table Conversations organised under the Voices for Indi (V4I) banner.

From those conversations came a report and the announcement that Cathy McGowan would run as an Independent candidate for Indi.

The rest, as they say, is history.

Cathy went on to defeat sitting Liberal member Sophie Mirabella, and was returned for a second term with a greater majority in 2016.

In 2019 V4I, through a community-run process, saw Helen Haines replace the retiring Cathy as the candidate for Indi, and this month we have seen Helen returned for a second term with an increased margin.

Today Indi can no longer be called a safe conservative seat.

Cathy’s ‘retirement’ has seen her mentoring community groups across Australia about local engagement, and it can be no coincidence that a return to community values has resulted in so many Independents being elected.

If not for the rise of V4I and Cathy accepting that initial challenge, I wonder whether the result would be the same.

La Fiera was a great celebration for Myrtleford I WAS thrilled to see so many locals hitting the town of Myrtleford to show their support at the La Fiera Festival last month.

When I attended on Saturday the rain came thundering down, but that did not seem to deter anyone from attending the festival.

There was an array of stalls,

beautiful food, smiling faces, laughs, ponchos and umbrellas everywhere I turned.

This festival marked the perfect example of what happens when our communities come together.

Prior to the festival I attended the La Fiera Young Ambassadors function.

I had the pleasure

of meeting four young ambassadors in David Genero, Taylah Geddes, Frankie Carroll and Maddison Pasqualotto.

Myrtleford’s future is in great hands with the calibre of those who stepped forward to promote the festival.

BILLY Button Wines has donated $600 to the Porepunkah CFA, which will assist the brigade with the planned upgrade to the CFA shed.

Billy Button raised the money throughout the Easter weekend and school holidays by allowing people to give a gold coin donation for their wine tastings.

Grant Williams from Billy Button Wines said throughout COVID they were supported by the community, so by doing this they can give back to the community.

“COVID was difficult time for us, our caller door was closed and we were unable to do tastings,” he said.

“Now we are back up and running, to give back to the

community is great especially to the CFA who have been there through difficult times also.

“We want to put the challenge out to other wineries like Gapsted to do some fundraising for the Gapsted CFA and also all the other wineries throughout the area.”

Porepunkah CFA captain Mick Dalbosco is grateful for the donation from Billy Buttons and can’t wait to get the upgrade to the shed started.

“This money will go towards getting new equipment for the office areas in our proposed plans when we eventually get the works started,” Mr Dalbosco said.

“Our plans are been approved by council so once we have the funding, we will be able to start the works and continue building the community.”

Tenders for chalet hospitality being evaluated

By LEAH ANDERSON-BYRNE THE Alpine community waits with bated breath to learn the future of hospitality in the famed Mt Buffalo Chalet, after the period for interested parties to lodge expressions of interest for cafe operations officially closed on April 15.

The tender, offered by Parks Victoria, was for a year-long operator to create an engaging and sustainable café operation in the front rooms of the chalet, which

has laid dormant since the 2006/07 bushfires ravaged the region.

Parks Victoria executive director of marketing and communications, Lisa Patroni, said submissions received are being evaluated.

“We hope to announce the successful tender later this year,” she said.

“The Victorian Government has allocated up to $2 million to support design, facilities upgrades, fit-out and refurbishment

Skatepark upgrade still a priority for locals

By LEAH ANDERSON-BYRNE BRIGHT’S skatepark continues to prove itself as a much loved community spot, if recent user numbers and fundraising is any indication.

Myrtleford local Ben Dittmer, who created the Alpine Shire Skateboarding Community Facebook page last year, has seen a rise in participants in the free weekly sessions he offers and recently raised roughly $400 at a local fundraiser.

“We’re seeing between 25-30 people come along which is really great,” he said.

“The fundraiser we held at the Buffalo Stampede raised us some more funds with the end goal being around $20,000 to show council the community want to see an upgrade of this great facility.

“I recently spoke to council to ask them to include us in the 2022/23 budget so hopefully that comes to fruition, but in the mean time I’d like to thank everyone who supports us.

“During the winter months we’ll most likely pause the free sessions due to unsafe weather conditions, but we’ll still be fundraising and welcome any support.”

Brightsyde skate store owner Tim Goddard said he was keen to throw some support behind Ben. “He has been doing a great job campaigning for a new skate park in Bright and is very passionate,” he said.

“After seeing him donate his time and sharing his knowledge doing

free weekly lessons at the skate park for anyone keen to learn or improve we wanted to donate some complete skateboards so he had a little fleet to work with.

“Some people might not own their own board yet but were keen to give it a go, or it might be a good opportunity for kids to try a couple of different sizes and widths to see what suits them best.

“This is a great initiative and opportunity to get more people involved in skateboarding and we are excited to help out in any way we can.”

Bright Laundry owner Colin Taylor said his Community Circle Initiative was happy to take on Ben’s project as one of their first to support.

“Our team and our customers are locals and we think it’s important to give back to the community so our initiative is one way to do that; donating one per cent of revenue,” he said.

“We aim to support meaningful community projects and we’re happy to have this as one of our first after launching the initiative late last year.

“In the calendar year of 2022 we’ll invest $10,000 and I believe next year we’ll be on track for investing $20,000 so we can back more local projects.

“To really rocket fuel this project, we’ll match dollar-for-dollar local resident contribution up to $5000.”

Crackpot 1 said they are looking at doing 12 to 13 mosaics mounted on large recycled concrete structures in a ‘Stonehenge’ arrangement on a cleared area on the loop trail at Myrtleford.

The gallery area will include seating and landscaping with native grasses and groundcovers to encourage butterflies and skinks, which will enhance the experience.

Myrtleford Landcare is supportive of the idea.

“We can work with the Crackpots with our strengths like providing a list of bird species to mosaic and landscaping of the area, but we really would like to listen to the community on their thoughts,” said Myrtleford Landcare committee member Gayle South.

“In a sense it is public art for locals and visitors to enjoy.

“We would like to hear from all demographics of the community, young and old alike.”

Alpine Health develops reach out learning hubs

By MARTIN DAVIS ALPINE Health has partnered with six other Victorian multi-purpose health services (MPS) to establish Reach Out Rural Learning Hubs to form an industry-based network of health agencies to facilitate health industry training in rural communities.

The hubs will be replicating the Alpine Institute’s training model going into the communities of regional and rural Victoria.

The fundamental concepts of the learning hubs will be addressing the need for health care training in rural communities where TAFE has little presence, and people wanting the training are disadvantaged by a lack of opportunity and geographical location.

The six hubs will be based at: Corryong Health, Robinvale and District Health Service, Mallee Track Health Service, Orbost Regional Health, Timboon Health and District Healthcare Service, and Great Ocean Road Health.

A Certificate III in Individual Support Ageing, Home & Community will be offered to staff and the local community, with the course being completed within six months, combining work, on the job training and structured learning.

The entry-level course is for people who want a change of careers, leave school or want a career in health-supporting the elderly at home or in aged care Alpine Health chief executive officer Nick Shaw said they are incredibly pleased the MPS learning hubs project is underway.

“The first cert III in individual support course commences on Tuesday, June 28,” he said.

“By aligning health services and industry training we can produce improved education, employment and health outcomes for the regional and rural communities which is something we are very passionate about.”

By MARTIN DAVIS MYRTLEFORD’S Mal Wilson is hoping his own health journey following a heart attack almost 30 years ago can help others within the community.

He will share his experiences during an informative free forum hosted at the Myrtleford Bowls Club on Wednesday, June 22, starting at 7pm.

In the 1990s, Mal was overweight, drinking, smoking, stressed and didn’t exercise.

He said at heart attack in November 1993 changed his life forever...and for the better.

Mal got a quadruple bypass six months later, which started his new journey at the age of 42.

While standing in a Brisbane gym, he noticed his heart surgeon Mark O’Brien on the treadmill, and that set him on his own running path.

His life transformation would see him run in marathons where he won 10 gold, three silver and three bronze champion-

ship medals at his Queensland running club.

At the end of his running days, Mal’s best times included a three-hour marathon, an 80 minute half marathon, and running 100kms in 11.5 hours.

Mal said this free event would also include a talk from Dr James Wei, who will be able to put a professional spin and advice on his experiences.

“By having Dr Wei there people will be able to ask questions and get professional advice on

how to manage their heart and mental health,” he said.

“With all the talk around the recent heart attacks I thought it would be good to put on this event for people to hear something about this from a normal person and how a heart attack turned my life around forever.

“I’m hoping this forum can get more people to start to look after their heart and understand that something like this can happen to anyone.”

Event funding is up for grabs

By MARTIN DAVIS ALPINE Shire Council has opened applications for its annual event funding program, with event organisers seeking logistic or financial support encouraged to apply.

The program will support organisers of events held in the Alpine Shire throughout the 2022/23 financial year.

The new funding criteria

has been identified in the Alpine Shires Events Strategy, which will come into effect on Friday, July 1.

Alpine Shire Mayor Sarah Nicholas said applications will be assessed on the event’s social, environmental and economic impact, in line with the strategy.

“We strongly encourage event organisers to read the strategy and familiarise themselves with these

new criteria and conditions,” she said.

“The strategy is a blueprint for council to guide decision making and future planning for events, to ensure the sustainability of the events sector while delivering the best possible outcomes for the Alpine Shire community.

“It identifies the needs and priorities of the community and provides a clear and realistic frame-

work for council to guide the future delivery of events.”

The annual funding program provides event financial and logistic support to a wide range of local events that contribute to the region’s culture, economy, and adventure.

Council is working towards reducing waste and boosting environmental sustainability with these factors being considered in

the funding criteria.

“We are fortunate in the Alpine Shire to have a diverse calendar of events that celebrate our environment, culture and history, feature our magnificent food and produce, promote health and wellbeing and attract visitors,” Cr Nicholas said.

“Our event organisers are often dedicated and passionate volunteers, who create opportunities for locals and visitors alike to

experience something new, connect with their community and enjoy themselves.

“It’s terrific to be able to support our event organisers to deliver such an exciting events calendar each year.”

Endurance swimmer joins Bright business breakfast

By MARTIN DAVIS BUSINESS people from across Bright and surrounds came together to enjoy breakfast and hear from guest speaker, world record-breaking endurance swimmer Tammy van Wisse.

Ms van Wisse is famous for her endurance swimming, being the only person to swim the 97km long Bass Strait between Victoria and Tasmania, and also being the champion for change in highlighting the Murray River’s environmental plight after she swam the whole length of the river.

Shaw said to be able to get a speaker like Tammy was fantastic, and to be able to get people from all the businesses in Bright was excellent.

“It was good to see 60-70 people there from different business from all over Bright and by doing a breakfast it fit into retail and accommodation businesses’ schedules,” he said.

“We have done these in the past but I feel this was the best one yet and Tammy was a fantastic guest speaker.

“Coming out of COVID people are ready to move on, and to have someone like Tammy share different ways she was able to cope with the adversity was very beneficial.”

It was a massive win for Dr Haines who has gained 40.94 per cent of the primary vote and enters her second term of parliament alongside a wave of Independents who won the favour of voters in their respective electorates.

While incumbent Helen Haines increased her first preference margin by 8.61 per cent with a whopping 40.96 per cent of first preference votes, The Nationals had a 5.56 per cent swing against them with just 3.89 per cent of the vote.

Among the decided seats in Victoria federally, The Nationals held all their seats - the Mallee, Gippsland and Nicholls - Liberal won eight seats, but Labor won 23 seats federally.

In Indi, Mr McCurdy said they ran a campaign to sup-

port the Liberals and it wasn’t a campaign they invested heavily in financially, albeit he said candidate Liz Fisher worked hard.

“Everyone can have a different take out of the election and fine tune it to their own narrative and some could say Scott Morrison was on the nose and that was reflected in the Liberal and Nationals vote, even though the Nationals didn’t lose any seats,” Mr McCurdy said.

“If that is the narrative,

I’m quite happy with that because Daniel Andrews has been there for eight years and maybe we’re due for someone new because after this time people just get sick of the people who are there.”

The state election campaign is unlikely to have such an emphasis on climate action and Mr McCurdy believes that will bring different voting trends.

“The state is a different kettle of fish and although people have concerns about climate change, action on the

environment needs to be driven at the top federally to start with,” he said.

“If action is taken and I think it will be due to the significant flow of primary votes to Independents and to Labor, climate action and change will certainly be addressed.

“We need to make sure that while all that goes on at a federal level, the health system has to keep going, our schools need to be up to date, and our roads maintained.”

The Nationals hang their

hat heavily on supporting agriculture and this is why they have historically held a strong hand in rural and regional Australia.

Mr McCurdy said they will also support agriculture because it’s about the flow on effects in towns like Myrtleford, Bright and Mt Beauty.

“When the farmers are doing well, the towns do well and it’s up to us to try and get ourselves back on track after the lockdowns and two years of COVID,” he said.

Support proposed for frontline females FEMALE firefighters could soon gain access to compensation following a gender-specific cancer diagnosis, under amended presumptive rights currently before parliament.

Wangaratta-based state MP Tania Maxwell put forward the Firefighters’ Presumptive Rights Compensation Legislation Amendment Bill 2022 in the Legislative Council last week, which would also see firefighters no longer need to prove their cancer diagnosis was caused by their work.

The South Wangaratta brigade volunteer said the efforts to promote equality in the 2019 compensation scheme came as a result of an increased incidence of cervical, ovarian and uterine cancers among North American firefighters.

“Firefighters across this state whether they are career firefighters, forest firefighters or the incredible network of CFA volunteers that our

regions rely on so heavily - face enormous risk every time they respond to a fire,” Ms Maxwell said.

“The risks are intense and wideranging - there’s smoke inhalation, exposure to chemicals, extreme heat, ultraviolet radiation, noise, dust and the risk of crush injuries from collapsing structures.

“There has been a real shift away from the image of gear caked in soot as a status symbol and a greater understanding of how chemical leaching can affect a person’s health.”

While research epidemiologists have been unable to ascertain the risk of female-specific cancers developing in Victoria due to female firefighters representing only five per cent of the workforce, Ms Maxwell said policymakers could build on research conducted by researchers in the United States and Canada.

A 2019 US Federal Emergency

Management Agency research paper stated the incidence of cervical cancer was more than four times higher in female firefighters.

“The United States and Canada have led the charge on presumptive cancer rights for firefighters, where studies predict that female firefighters get a minimum of 20 per cent more cancers than the general population,” Ms Maxwell said.

“We should not delay in bringing this change to the presumptive rights scheme until there are enough female firefighters to provide the evidence that exists now for men.

“That evidence could be years or decades away and, in the meantime, will deny quality to those female firefighters, those trailblazers, who serve us now and who might need this now.”

The parliament is set to debate Ms Maxwell’s bill in two weeks’ time.

Telstra set to upgrade local services MYRTLEFORD and district telecom users are close to experiencing faster internet speeds than ever before, with Telstra set to upgrade its base station on Clemens Lane.

The proposed works consist of the reuse of six existing 4G panel antennas, the installation of six radio units, as well as ancillary equipment including three fibre breakout boxes, three hybrid trunk cables, 12 feeder cables, as well as the installation of six tower mount amplifiers and in-shelter works.

Telstra regional manager Jenny Gray said the works will drastically improve the services in the Myrtleford area.

“Bringing Telstra’s 5G network to Myrtleford for the first time is a game-changer and means customers with 5G devices will be able to experience faster download speeds, greater capacity during the busiest times on the network and better connectivity,” she said.

“The planned works will also increase the existing 4G capacity.

“We are looking forward to delivering improved connectivity to the Myrtleford community and locals will be notified of when works are occurring closer to the date, later this year.”

I

N the late 19th century, at the height of a gold mining boom and expansion of agriculture and commerce, Myrtleford and district was served by a brass band.

Understandably, men with family backgrounds in mining in the ‘old country’ would continue to play brass instruments as a form of recreation and entertain their local community.

On pleasant Sunday afternoons, the town band could be seen giving recitals on the slopes above the town, adjacent to the Reform Mine entrance.

This tradition continued even after 1888, when mining ceased there for eight years, as the town plunged into depression and awaited the cancella-

tion of the mining lease held

by JA Wallace, MLC. The town band performed on special occasions, such as the federation of the Commonwealth in January 1901, and celebrations to end the South African War in 1902.

A shortage of musicians during World War 1 caused by local enlistments meant limited activity from 1914, but several troopers were welcomed home with performances in 1919-20 at the railway station and functions in local halls.

The 1920s and 30s saw the band perform at indoor floral and agricultural displays in Memorial Hall; ‘Back To’ festivals in 1927, 1929 and 1938; Empire Day each May; the procession to celebrate the coronation of George VI in May 1937; and many Anzac Days.

The band then disbanded, and it was not until the early 1950s that the Myrtleford & District Citizens’ Band, with up to 30 musicians, including 20 youths, was reformed.

Band members looked resplendent in a uniform of grey with gold braid, a black cap and a red stripe down the trousers.

The weekly practice was held in the centre of town,

firstly at the Anglican Hall (the old timber Anglican Church) and then in the RSL Hall each Thursday evening.

The band flourished throughout the 1950s, participating in the agricultural show, on Anzac Days, celebrating Elizabeth II’s coronation in June 1953 and fundraising events for a new hospital and

an ambulance service.

Out of town, band members competed at festivals across the North East and Goulburn Valley.

However, interest was waning at the close of the decade, and as in similar smaller country centres, the Citizens’ Band was again disbanded.

he Urban Fire Brigade was not formed until 1935, after a reticulated water supply became available in the town in December 1934.

Before this time, a small, organised group of men responded to the peel of a ‘fire bell’ at the Methodist Church, suppressing fires with hessian bags, branches and buckets.

A new bell, mounted on a recycled windmill stand funded by the Myrtleford Progress Association, was erected at the front of the post office in 1935.

Since the mid-1920s, the association had been a significant force in convincing residents that a water supply would save lives and the household budget by reducing insurance costs.

It had also called upon the public to form a fire brigade, resulting in 15 volunteers joining the group.

They displayed their uniforms for the first time at a ‘Fire Brigade Ball’ in November 1936.

With the CFA providing essential equipment and

a second-hand hose and reel, the brigade established itself at the corner of Standish and Duke streets, where it remains today.

Relocation of the fire bell tower to the fire station did not occur until 1950.

The post-war period saw regular upgrades to equipment and vehicles and modernisation of the station building.

A rich history in participation at fire demonstrations since 1936 saw brigade members continue to compete in fire demonstrations as far away as Warrnambool and Ballarat.

In company with units at Whorouly, Gapsted, Buffalo River, Mudgegonga, Rostrevor and Rosewhite, the town brigade has been essential in dealing with various fire emergencies.

District history, which includes recollections of many houses and tobacco kiln fires and devastating bushfires in 1905, 1919, 1926, 1939, 1969, 1972, 1983, 2003, 2009 and 2019-20, attests to the need for fire awareness and response by these dedicated brigades.

BRIGHT police are preparing for a massive snow season, with police having a 24hour presence over the first week throughout Falls Creek and Mt Hotham resorts.

Senior Sergeant Doug Incoll said from Thursday, June 9, police will be available in the mountains 24/7 for any assistance required.

“Police will be starting an operation which will be based around chain compliance, with proactive advice on safety messaging about preparation,” he said.

“Regardless of any snow on the ground on the opening weekend, police are expecting to see people who haven’t been to the snow before.

“The resorts will be booked out, so police will be targeting licensed premises and looking at people who might have drunk too much and are misbehaving to ensure they don’t affect others at the resorts.”

Snr Sgt Incoll encourages people to have their wits about them with the conditions.

He said police will be doing spot checks to ensure people are prepared with the appropriate wheel chains regardless if there is snowfall.

“With the weather changing it is important people have got their cars prepared with antifreeze in their radiators or for diesel drivers to have alpine mix,” Snr Sgt Incoll said.

“Drivers will need to be patient with local speed limits, visibility being limited from about 50 metres and also black ice being present, so if you are unsure, we encourage people to pull to the side and also drive with caution.”

Feral deer needs all of community approach

Workshop focus on better dams for better cattle

ALMOST 50 people made their way to Bright last Saturday for Upper Ovens Valley Landcare’s ‘living with deer’ forum.

Landcare president Peter Jacobs said the audience was concerned about the growing threat and impact of feral deer on agriculture, forestry, and the natural environment

in the North East.

“Attendees heard from the township communities of Harrietville and the farming community of the Upper Murray about how they have worked together to tackle the impact of deer,” Mr Jacobs said.

“The important message was don’t wait for someone

else to do something, take action yourself.

“While there is no chance of deer being removed from the North East landscape at this stage, there are things that can be done.”

Mr Jacobs said feral deer have been causing a social, economic and psychological impact on the commu-

nity while also having a significant economic impact on the softwood industry.

Options for controlling deer numbers included fencing, other deterrents, and removing harbour and attractants.

Many suggested the possibility of culling using accredited volunteer hunters,

commercial harvesting, and professional pest controllers assisting landowners.

“What was clear is that this is everyone’s responsibility and it needs an all of community approach to support reducing the impact of feral deer on the Upper Ovens community,” Mr Jacobs said.

EMISSIONS CUT: HVP Plantations expect they will have met net zero emissions in their climate disclosure report this year.

HVP expects to hit net zero

IN the lead up to releasing its climate disclosure report later this year, HVP Plantations has said its expects its Victorian operations, including throughout the Alpine Valley, to meet net zero carbon emissions.

HVP said the annual increase in carbon captured by its plantation estate will more than offset emissions associated with growing and selling timber.

“We have worked through the full profile of issues, not just where we stand in terms

of net zero, but also climate adaptation, risk assessment and risk management,” manager of forest resources Dr Tony O’Hara said.

He said few companies were in the position of HVP, where emissions reduction programs could be supported within the company by capture of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, clearly proving and demonstrating how it met net zero emissions.

“We are able to play a significant role in climate

change mitigation,” he said.

“We have supportive contractors who are keen to work with us to find reductions in emissions arising from our operations.”

HVP’s climate disclosure report will be for the financial year ending June 2022 and is planned for release in the last quarter of 2022.

Dr O’Hara said collecting the right data was essential to HVP developing its climate disclosure report and proving its net zero status.

“We’ve always had good

data on how fast our trees grow, but we didn’t have good data on carbon and emissions,” he said.

“For every cubic metre of logs we sell, something between 25 and 30 per cent of the carbon in that log stays out of the atmosphere in wood products.

“That took a lot of work to understand and the calculations are being refined both nationally and internationally.”

Dr O’Hara also said the company may establish

wind farms on parts of their estate, as a part of a wider climate change mitigation strategy.

HVP Plantations estate is situated across Victoria, extending from Gippsland in the east to the border with South Australia in the west and with large plantations in north east Victoria.

The total area of land managed by HVP equates to more than 240,000 ha, and about 170,000 ha of this land is pine and eucalypt plantation.

OVENS Landcare Network hosted the sustainable farms team from the Australian National University (ANU) and Agriculture Victoria for a workshop on farm dams at a Rosewhite property last weekend.

The sustainable farms team discussed a new study published by scientists at ANU, which compared the benefits of improving farm dam water quality on cattle weight gain against the cost of renovation.

The cost–benefit analysis found a substantial net economic benefit from renovating dams in poor condition to improve water quality.

Sustainable farm’s ecologist Dave Smith said vegetation around dams helps filter the inflow of water.

“Sustainable farms research is showing fenced, enhanced dams have better quality of water compared to an open dam without vegetation,” he said.

“Plus, vegetation around dams supports more wildlife, including birds, frogs and pollinating insects.”

Brad Costin from Agriculture Victoria discussed how effectively maintaining farm dams and the importance of understanding your farm water storage capacity.

He demonstrated how to measure the capacity of farm dams and use the Agriculture Victoria summer water calculator to estimate how long your stored water will last.

Workshop organiser Penny Raleigh said the workshop attracted a great turn out and went very well.

This event is the first in a series being held across the North East, providing education and resources for land managers to support future ready farms.

Ŷ MADE FOR OZ: The Toyota Land Cruiser 300 Series stands the test of time

By DEREK OGDEN THE Land Cruiser (aka LandCruiser) wagon first chiseled its way into the Australian psyche during the development of the Snowy Mountains Hydro Electric Scheme in the 1950s.

Now, 60 years later, the latest version of the iconic Toyota 4x4, the 300 Series, hangs on firmly to its exalted position in the pantheon of the large off-roader, paralleling a Henry Moore statue in the art world.

There’s still a local link, with the owners of the upperend variants able to take advantage of Toyota’s MultiTerrain Select system, which was developed Down Under with reference to Australian widely varying on and offroad conditions.

The new Land Cruiser also includes two new flagship variants, with the luxury Sahara ZX and the off-roadfocused GR Sport joining the core GX, GXL, VX and Sahara.

Major upgrades include a new 3.3-litre V6 twin-turbo diesel engine, a new exterior design underpinned by the Toyota New Global Architecture platform and advanced driver assistance technologies to provide superb onroad performance and unmatched off-road capability.

Prices range from $89,990, plus on-road costs for the entry-level GX and top out at $138,790 for the Sahara ZX. Premium paint is a $675 add-on. The GXL on test tips the scales into six figures at $101,790.

For the first time on Land Cruiser, the Toyota Service Advantage has been extended from three years / 60,000 km to five years / 100,000 km, providing customers with

capped-price servicing for their first 10 services at $375 each. Intervals are every six months or 10,000 km, whichever comes first.

Owners are able to extend their warranty on the engine and driveline to seven years by sticking to the service schedule.

STYLING Newly constructed from the ground up, the 300 Series extends Land Cruiser’s long-standing statuesque stance in the big 4x4 market segment, combining trademark features with new, powerful styling.

From the front, new Land Cruiser pays homage to its heritage through its wide, horizontal grille, flanked by slimline headlights, both set higher than the previous model to avoid damage when off road. The front bumper is more rounded.

In profile the cabin is set further back in line with early generations of the vehicle, the rear bumper curves more steeply upwards to improve off-road ability, while the whole rear end is tapered for better aerodynamics.

Rear lights are arranged horizontally in a new aluminium hatch. The GXL rolls on unique 18-inch six-spoke alloy wheels.

INTERIOR Along with the significant upgrade in features and technology, the Land Cruiser’s cabin has been extensively soundproofed to ensure occupants travel in quiet comfort, while the top of the console box, driver and front passenger kneepads and lower length on the centre console are all upholstered in soft-touch materials.

The GXL test car joins

the flagship VX and Sahara in offering seating for seven occupants. The third row makes room for 1004 litres of luggage and seating for five when it is stowed away in the floor, with up to 1967 litres with both rear rows folded.

Storage includes a dualopening centre console storage box, centre storage tray / box, overhead sunglasses holder, glovebox and a range of door bins and cupholders capable of holding 750 ml bottles.

SAFETY All Land Cruisers take in the latest Toyota Safety Sense technologies including autonomous emergency braking pre-collision safety with daytime cyclist and oncoming vehicle detection, night-time pedestrian detection, intersection turn assist and steering assist.

Active cruise control now offers curve speed reduction, while road sign assist, and on VX grades and above, lane trace assist with steering wheel vibration, have been introduced for the first time.

Other safety features on all grades include automatic high beam, reversing camera and 10 airbags. New Toyota Connected Services offers enhanced safety and security with automatic assistance in the event of an emergency, and vehicle tracking if the car is stolen.

ENGINES / TRANSMISSIONS All variants are powered by a new-generation 3.3-litre V6 twin-turbo diesel engine producing 227 kW at 4000 rpm and 700 Nm from 1600 to 2600 rpm, a 27 kW / 50 Nm increase over the V8 it replaces. The V6 is mated with a segment-first 10-speed torque converter automatic transmission.

Thanks to its new-generation engine, intelligent transmission and weight-saving measures, fuel economy, says Toyota, has reduced by 6.3 per cent on the combined cycle compared with the outgoing V8, to 8.9 litres

DRIVING The two-way turbocharging of the new 227 kW / 700 Nm V6 ensures smooth and efficient power delivery. At low speed, the primary turbocharger is engaged for responsive power delivery.

As engine speed increases, the second turbocharger is activated to deliver optimal power and torque with smooth acceleration. Both turbos have been designed to maximise low-speed torque, perfect for off-roading or towing.

The 300 Series retains the LandCruiser’s 3500kg braked towing capacity, offering effortless towing

thanks to a combination of greater torque, the sophisticated 10-speed transmission and a stronger, more stable chassis. A tow wiring harness is also now offered as standard, making the process of connecting a trailer easier than ever.

Multi-Terrain Select features six different modes for off-road terrain - five in high range and four in low range - for ultimate traction in the harshest conditions.

Developed extensively in Australia, MTS offers dirt, sand, mud, deep snow, rock and new auto modes, the last able to intelligently sense the terrain underfoot and adapt the traction control systems accordingly.

Combining with MTS is the low-speed crawl control function and the multi-terrain monitor system which provides 360-degree and underfloor views of the path and approaching obstacles.

FORD ESCAPE ST-LINE PHEV

OUR most recent road test review was of a Ford Escape SUV plug-in hybrid, which is usually tagged as a PHEV (Plugin Hybrid Electric Vehicle).

It is the first Ford vehicle to be sold in Australia with any form of electrification.

Ford is working hard at reducing future vehicle emissions in many ways.

Among these will be the addition of electric power to all models, in the form of as well as standard and plug-in petrol/electric hybrids as well as pure electric EVs. Escape PHEV comes only in the ST-Line spec level, priced at $53,440 plus onroad costs. The petrol-only ST-Line sells for $38,490 STYLING Ford Escape has a sensible shape that looks attractive without losing interior and luggage space by having a semi-coupe shape at the rear.

This makes it relatively unusual in this class.

The front is big and bold with a large grille and headlights that run almost halfway to the windscreen.

It’s salami time in the North East WE are fortunate to live in an area where migrants from the ‘old country’ of Italy settled following the Second World War and enriched our regions with their tastes and ways of home.

From tobacco to wine and viticulture to pasta, pizza and cured meats, they have been a staple of the North East for more than 70 years.

COSTANTE Imports was established in 1968 and is a family run business that specialises in suppling quality and unique equipment for the production of pasta, wine, olive oil and small goods like salami, as well as regional Italian specialties and cookware.

As a boy, Giovanni Costante learnt his trade as an engineer from his father and grandfather and with these skills he built

Snowfall is a welcome way to begin winter SNOW has arrived in abundance this week and will lay the platform for a cracker of a start to the 2022 winter snow season.

Break out the beanie, jacket and gloves as temperatures dropped well below zero in the alpine region since Monday, with the welcome sight of snow.

Winter weather continues with blizzard conditions yesterday set to deliver upwards of 40cm of snow up until this morning, with more forecast this weekend.

Snow forecasters have been upgrading their predictions on Monday morning with Pete ‘The Frog’ Taylor from Snowatch saying Victorian resorts will receive 20-60cm over five days and up to 90cm in the 15 day period. (www. snowatch.com.au) Jane Bunn’s 7-day weather model predicts 30-60cms for Victorian resorts. (www.janesweather. com) Satellite images have shown a polar air mass being driven across southern and southeastern Australia by a deep low pressure system.

A cold front embedded in the polar airstream is crossing southeastern Australia, with this front being followed by an extremely cold pool of air that was expected to deliver low-level snow across several states yesterday

afternoon and tonight.

Temperatures could get cold enough for snow to reach to about 600 metres above sea level in Victoria - which could see dustings of snow in alpine towns.

After this initial storm mid week more snow is due next weekend which could set up a great base to kickstart the season.

The resorts have started their snowmaking, plus the recent snow of a few weeks ago has cooled the ground which is welcome news for the season snow cycle.

Cold ground equals less melting of new snow.

The Bureau of Meteorology issued their winter climate outlook last week.

It shows a slowly weakening La Niña is one climate factor influencing above average winter rainfall for most of central and eastern Australia in coming months.

The Outlook predicts the unusually wet conditions for inland parts of New South Wales, South Australia, Queensland and the Northern Territory are likely to be in the top 20 per cent of wettest winters.

With Northern Australia’s dry season starting in May, it only takes a small amount of extra rain to be above average at this time of year.

There is an above 80 per cent chance of unusually

high winter temperatures south-eastern New South Wales, southern and eastern Victoria, and all of Tasmania.

A large section of central Australia has an increased chance of unusually low winter daytime temperatures, in the coolest 20 per cent of past winters.

This extends from Western Australia’s eastern area through central Australia into the eastern states.

Warmer than average nights are likely almost everywhere – with at least an 80 per cent chance of higher minimum temperatures for most of Australia.

The winter outlooks reflect several climate influences, including a developing negative Indian Ocean Dipole, a slowly declining La Niña in the Pacific Ocean and warmer than average waters around northern Australia. (www.bom.gov.au) For the alpine region we always rely on the cold temperatures arriving when the snow falls, but this is not always the case.

We often endure rain prior to the snow, so let’s hope the conditions prevail this season for snow to build a strong base in the early part of the season.

Bowls club hosts winery staff morning tea and lunch after the fun on the bowling green.

The event uncovered some talent on the greens and the club hopes it may lead to greater participation with the new seasons’ Barefoot bowls program and maybe membership at the bowls club.

The many and various coloured bowls provided a spectacular backdrop on the day which started with dew on the grass but once the sun came out so did the enjoyment as many tried bowls for the very first time.

BILLY Button Alpine Valleys owners Jo Marsh and husband Glenn, along with their daughter Harriett, hosted their staff last week at the Myrtleford Bowls Club in magnificent weather to celebrate all the hard work and end of vintage.

There were lots of competition amongst the staff for bragging rights but all in fun as endorsed by all the smiles and laughter - even the kids celebrated with a game of bowls.

The Under 15 team started and finished their match against Benalla United with big scoring innings.

Although there weren’t a lot of opportunities to show their batting prowess, 11 batters were walked in this innings, and Makiah McCallum did provide a solid double into centerfield.

The Panther outfield was alert with Tayge Skippen (centrefield), who made a brilliant return of a hit ball to Ayla McCallum at second base for a tag on a batter trying to stretch his single base hit.

Samara McCallum (leftfield) did similar in the second innings for a force-out play - she then pitched the third innings, finishing with a strikeout.

Luca Barthelmes, returning for his first game, pitched the first two innings

(51 pitches, 24 strikes) for two strikeouts.

Liam Quinton closed the game, striking out the last three batters - Brianna Eroi was aboard with a walk also.

The B Grade received a 9-0 forfeit from the Benalla team, who could not field a team due to health issues this is the second forfeit the club has received.

Last week’s fiery game saw the NEBA suspend the Wodonga pitcher for one week and award the game as a 9-0 forfeit to Porepunkah, as Wodonga did not have nine players on the diamond after the pitcher had been ejected.

Heath Anders finished the game (2.3 innings, 38 pitches, 26 strikes).

Third baseman Stephen Johnstone was excellent, fielding ground balls and throwing across the diamond, and taking fly balls.

He led off the second innings with a first pitch double to centerfield to start the two run effort by the Panthers.

Scott McCallum returned to form with a double to leftfield to start the run scoring in the fourth innings and then a single to centerfield in his next at-bat.

Paul Meddings and Willis both recorded singles to leftfield, with Willis to score one run and Meddings to start the fifth innings positively.

The understaffed Under 11 team were too strong on the offensive side of the game against the North Albury Bears, with five runs in each of their first three innings.

Tigers’ new president set for cricket season

THERE has been a changing of the guard within the Ovens Valley United Cricket Club (OVUCC), with Thomas Chettleburgh taking over the role of club president from longstanding leader Tony Cuskelly.

Decided at last week’s AGM, Cuskelly will hand over the reins to his number two after five years in the top job.

Cuskelly said he felt it was time to move on and inject some new energy into the club.

“After the five years, I wanted to still do the job, but you have your time and you move on and let someone else come in who has other ideas and new energy,” he said.

“We had the AGM last Wednesday night, we had a couple of nominations which was really good, very surprising, and Thomas Chettleburgh was voted as the new president.

“Tom’s basically shadowed me for the last couple of years as the club treasurer and our senior manager, so Tom and I have done a lot of work together to get the club where it is today.

“I think it’s good to have a younger person in the role for a bit of time now, which is good.

“I’ll be staying at the club, I’ll be helping out with grant applications and junior programs and recruiting, I’ll help with just about anything - probably doing a bit more curating at McNamara Reserve in particular.”

Cuskelly said some of the highlights during his tenure as president were two A grade semi-final appearances from the Tigers, as well as their T20 premiership in the 2020/21 season.

Chettleburgh, who wore many hats as Cuskelly’s right hand man, said he plans to cement Ovens Valley United as one of the premier cricketing clubs in the North East with facilities to match.

“Big shoes to fill, but I think we all knew it was time for a change at the club, and it means a younger president in myself and different ideas and different ways of going about it,” he said.

“Hopefully it works in our favour and we can continuously improve.

“The main goal at the moment

is to create an environment in Myrtleford that is a place where we can all head to training, play and socialise, and that being a facility, a Memorial Park-based master plan.

“It’ll continue on from what the committee has been doing but really start to make some waves in that direction, because that’ll be what establishes us as a great cricket club and makes it an environment where everyone can come and enjoy it.

“On the on-field side of things, securing a coach is probably the early aim, that’s probably my number one thing at the top of the list at the moment.

“I see it as a non-playing coach or if it is a playing coach, having non-playing coaches around to assist, make it a really professional environment - it’s been good, but we want it to be better, that’s our philosophy.”

Chettleburgh said the club will continue to expand the Master Blaster program, with all signs pointing to four junior and four senior sides for the 2022/23 season.

Myrtleford’s own looking to be ARC champion

By MARTIN DAVIS MYRTLEFORD’S Australian Rally Championship (ARC) driver, Jason Lennane, loves pushing himself and his Proton Sataria to the absolute limit on some of the most challenging tracks across the country.

After taking on the Forest Rally which ran through the beautiful south west of Western Australia in Bunbury and Nannup - Lennane sits fifth overall on the Shamrock Haulage 2WD Driver’s Cup after a strong showing in the west, where he finished on the podium.

He wants to achieve the ultimate goal of becoming an Australian champion one day.

Lennane has had a passion for motorsport since he was young, following his Dad and his co-driver around to different rallies.

“After many years of putting my head down and working I thought I needed a

break so I bought a rally car, and have been doing it for 12 years now,” he said.

“I wanted more of a challenge so I thought I’d step up to the national level.

“Rally gives a taste of the unknown with every track being different at any stage of the weekend...you could crash out one day but go there the next day and the corner is completely different.

“When you are on a track each corner you hit is the same every lap but when you are on gravel or other terrains everything changes.”

The unpredictability of rally driving can be incredibly dangerous, with obstacles around every corner.

Lennane has to trust his co-driver Wangaratta local Matt Whitten to make sure the car and them finish the stage.

“There is an unknown trust there which you can’t describe, to have someone tell you the corner is what he is saying it is and you commit,” he said.

Motorsport is an expensive sport,

with parts for the vehicle and travel all adding up.

“I’m hoping to making the next event in Tassie in five weeks but with all the costs involved it is going to cost too much as I fund most of the work I do,” Lennane said.

“I get support from different businesses around the area with Myrtleford Tyre and Batteries supplying me with tyres for my races and doing the wheel alignments for me which is great.

“By having the support from them it shows me how important having sponsors are and it would be great if any other business wants to jump on board to let me know.”

With the Launceston meet potentially off the radar for Lennane, he is hoping to back on track when the ARC heads to Gympie in Queensland on Saturday, July 23, before racing at his home meet in Gippsland on August 27.

Savoys’ men lose 4-2, women draw

IN an uncharacteristic display, Myrtleford’s senior men’s soccer team was unceremoniously dispatched by Albury City 4-2 on Sunday at Jelbart Park.

The Savoys were on the back foot from the beginning, conceding goals in the 16th, 18th and 37th minute to head into half time down 3-1, kept alive by Nagus Henry’s goal in the 31st minute.

Savoys coach Rob Caponecchia said a lack of intensity and mental focus from the side hampered any efforts at cohesion.

“I don’t know what happened on Sunday, but we didn’t bring our A team, I thought we were lacking a bit of intensity from the start,” he said.

“We were a little bit sluggish, and errors cost us some goals.

“To City’s credit, they came out with a fair bit of purpose, and we were just a bit flat, we didn’t cope with it very well, and the scoreline reflected that with 4-2.

“Admittedly, their goalkeeper made a few good saves - we didn’t have that many shots but the shots we did have were good, and their keeper made two outstanding saves, which maybe put us in a difficult position.”

While the second half did see some minor improvements, the Savoys’ mental game was off the mark, returning a tough loss

“We just couldn’t get our combinations right and that can happen, it’s just the situation we’re in, but we definitely need to regroup this week and travel to Wodonga Diamonds which won’t be an easy game,” Caponecchia said.

“Now they’ve seen the result, that City beat us, I think they’ll be confident they can upset us, but we’ve just got to go out there next week and have a bit more purpose in our play.

“We’re in a bit of a transition period because we’ve lost all of these players so we’re going to

have these inconsistencies but as the season goes on, we just hope we can get that out of our game and just be a bit more solid throughout the rest of the 10 rounds we’ve got left.”

The senior women had a more competitive affair, coming back from a 1-0 deficit at halftime to draw the game against Wangaratta City 2-2.

Summer Caponecchia was the Savoys’ saving grace with a pair of goals, but coach Gabrielle Paglia said it was a whole team effort.

“We were definitely glad to come back from 1-0 down to a draw,” she said.

“I think the big change was having three of our attackers away, so we had to shuffle around a few people into positions they haven’t been in before, and it took us a little while to figure ourselves out.

“Most teams understand Summer is an amazing player and our main goal scorer so they know to mark her, but I think that allowed players like Sherry (Brown), Leia (Pywell) and Mikala (Hackett) to shine, working with Summer to help move the ball along.”

With the bye this weekend, Paglia said the break allows the side to focus and prepare for a block of tough matches against quality sides like Albury United, Melrose and Wodonga Diamonds.

By WILLSON MACK THE Goulburn Valley League couldn’t go with the Ovens and Murray League’s firepower in last Saturday’s interleague football clash at Mooroopna.

In their first meeting for five years, the visitors posted an 18.11 (119) to 9.10 (64) win in a great spectacle for keen onlookers.

Wangaratta midfielder Joe Richards was outstanding in the victory and was awarded best on ground, while Albury’s Fletcher Carroll provided great support for the Magpies’ speedster.

The GV couldn’t handle the O&M’s dynamic forwards with Leigh Williams bagging five majors and Wangaratta Rovers duo Tom Boyd (three) and Alex Marklew (three) also looked dangerous.

O&M coach Damian Sexton doesn’t believe the score was a true representation of the contest.

“I don’t think the score was a reflection of the game,” Sexton said.

“The contest was a lot closer than it looks when you look at the score.

“There were times where the score could’ve gone there way, they had plenty of shots on goal at different

“We knew that we wanted to leave the ground being respected but to do that we had to respect them which we did.

“Our group was fantastic, there were no egos and our leaders in Michael Duncan and Harry Wheeler were great and Brad St John and

stages, our forwards set up well, our mids weren’t big but they were dynamic and our backs were reliable.”

Sexton praised the performance of the GV League.

“They were good,” he said.

“We had to respect them, they had some classy players but our blokes got on top.

As for the other Wangaratta players, Jake McQueen, Cody Shutt and Dylan Van Berlo were all terrific.

“As for the Magpies and Rovers boys, you couldn’t ask for better,” Sexton said.

“They were all just fantas-

tic blokes.

“Four of our back six were Magpies boys (Van Berlo, Mark Anderson, Jamie Anderson and Daniel Sharrock) so our backline was really settled because they all play together every week.

“That was something that I had thought about for a

while so that proved to be an advantage.”

Sexton was appreciative of Wangaratta coach Ben Reid and Wangaratta Rovers mentor Darryn Cresswell for putting their players up for selection.

“The league and myself are very appreciative of both Ben Reid and Darryn Cresswell for allowing their players to play,” he said.

“Both of them have been nothing short of supportive, Reid put nine up at the start which was a good effort and ‘Crezza’ said to his players anyone who wants to play at the next level can.”

It was the O&M and GV’s first meeting for five years.

“It was great to have interleague back,” Sexton said.

“There’s a bit of pressure on to get everything together, the work for it all probably started 12 weeks ago.

“The league’s professionalism is as good as you get but it was just good to put it all together and come out with the result that we did.

“You definitely feel a bit of fulfilment from it.”

Lions set for 10 week push to finish season

By NATHAN DE VRIES WITH the O&K season at its halfway point of the home and away fixture, and with two byes used up, it’s shaping up to be a massive block of 10 matches for Whorouly’s footballers and netballers as they make their case for finals.

Coming off the bye over the weekend, the Lions will front up week in, week out for the entire second half of the season with no time off.

Football senior co-coach Riley Calvene said the prospect of a massive block of games didn’t worry the group.

“I’m not too fazed by it at all, we’ve had a few byes now so I’d say we’re about right to go for another half, I think we should be fine,” he said.

“All of the boys needed a bit of a break and to get away from the footy - it’ll be good for us, coming back pretty fresh for Saturday.

“We’ll get a bit of momentum going, hopefully, and give it a good crack in the second half.”

The Lions’ first task will be conquering the consistent Tarrawingee, which Calvene said will be a good test for the side.

“I think they’re a good team, and they have been for so many years,” he said.

“Obviously they’re a quality side, their top five or six players are very handy, but our best are as good as anyone’s, so we’re confident heading into this week, for sure.

“We’re ready to go for Saturday - our list is looking pretty good at the moment, there aren’t too many injuries, so we’re feeling confident.”

Whorouly has had a stellar year so far on the netball court, sitting fifth on the A grade ladder near powerhouse sides like Milawa and Benalla.

“The team has had a good first half of the season, a few great wins but also a few losses, but I am very proud of the team and how everyone is working together at the moment,” she said.

“It’s great to see the returning players just fit right in with the girls from the side last year.

“Of course finals are in the back of our mind at the moment given where we sit on the ladder, but we don’t want to get too ahead of ourselves.

“At the moment we just want to focus on each week as it comes and try our best to get as many wins on the board as we can.”

Tarrawingee sit two points behind the Lions on the ladder, and will put up a fight against Whorouly.

“This week against ‘Tarra’ I think will be a very competitive match up,” Allen said.

“They have had a similar start to the season as we have, with some wins and losses, but hopefully after the break with the girls able to rest up for the week, we can come out with fresh legs and get the win on the board.”

The Lions take on Tarrawingee this Saturday at the Tarrawingee Recreation Reserve - senior football kicks off from 2pm while the A grade match starts at 2.30pm.

“There’s no doubt they haven’t been playing their best football, and we still think they’re a dangerous side if you let them get the ball on their terms,” Simpson said.

“We’re going over there with full respect, and we’re going to have to play our best footy.

“After the bye, it shows that the team that switches on the earliest is going to be the team that starts to get the footy on their terms.

“We’ve got to make sure we’ve got our defensive model up and about.”

Saints well rested and ready to rattle Raiders

FOLLOWING the league-wide bye for the interleague competition between the O&M and GVL last weekend, Myrtleford’s footballers and netballers are primed to compete, as the Saints make the trip to Biralee Park to take on the Raiders this Saturday.

The Saints entered the bye with a solid win over Wodonga Bulldogs in the senior footy, and co-coach Dawson Simpson said the selection group will have almost a full list to pick from.

“We had a good session Thursday, the boys did their own thing on Saturday, put a run out for them to do, and we’re looking forward to getting back into it and focusing on Wodonga Raiders,” he said.

“Nick Warnock will have to do a

fitness test this week to see where he’s at, but other than that we should be right.

“Will Quirk’s a little bit sore with his knee, he’ll miss out this week, but I think that’s it.

“There are a couple boys who are coming back from injuries, so it’ll be a good chat this week around the selection table.”

While no Saints pulled on a league jumper to play for the league, Simpson said it was in no way a reflection of the calibre of the Myrtleford list.

“It was more of an availability issue than a personnel issue,” he said.

“We put six players forward and none of them were able to attend training - a lot of our players live all over the state. “(O&M interleague coach) Damian Sexton’s criteria was you had to make training to play, which is

THE weekend saw Bright’s A grade netballers stomach another loss, downed 48-26 by Goorambat.

The Mountain Maids were playing catch-up for the majority of the match, trailing by five goals by the end of the first quarter before the margin ballooned out to eight by the half.

The onslaught continued in the third term, Bright outscored 13 goals to six as the Bats kept the damage coming.

Another six-goal period in the final quarter saw the Mountain Maids defeated by a margin of 22 goals, to round out the first half of the season in 10th place on the ladder with a record of one win and nine losses.

The Mountain Maids will look to wipe the slate clean this weekend when they take on King Valley, the only side yet to register a win in the 2022 season.

AFTER a somewhat sluggish first half, Bright’s senior footballers turned up the heat on Goorambat to come home winners 11.13 (79) to the Bats’ 6.11 (47) last Saturday.

Bright trailed by nine points at the first break, not helped by erroneous goalkicking, and when the margin started to move out beyond two goals at half-time, the Mountain Men had to reassess.

Coach Paul Harrison said the first half was not a true reflection of how Bright play their best footy.

“It was a really good win, it was a close game for the first half but we were a little bit sloppy early with our ball use,” he said.

“We probably had the majority of the ball in the first and second quarter, but we just turned the ball over a little bit.

“A couple of them (shots on goal) weren’t overly hard - I think Clay Dillon missed a couple almost straight in front, then someone else missed one as well - but we should’ve kicked two or three of those five.

“After half-time we really cleaned it up and were able to get our run and carry game going and use the width of the ground and

really open them up in the second half, which was good.”

The Mountain Men surged in the third term maximising forward 50 entries in a new way to take a one point lead heading into the last quarter.

“Prior to that, our inside 50 entries had been a little bit shallow so they were able to defend it fairly easily and then go over the top of our press,” Harrison said.

“We really talked about hitting that short hit up, then going deeper, which we were able to do in that last quarter.

“Whenever they won the footy themselves, they just kicked it straight back to our defensive half who were really good in the second half as well.”

The result was a positive for Dylan Bursill, who celebrated his

“We had to change it up a bit with ‘Dyl’ because he hurt his hammy in the second quarter so we had to move him,” Harrison said.

“He ended up playing full forward in the second half, and he kicked a couple so he did his job for us but he was going well down back in the first half.

“It was just a little twinge, so we said to him ‘just play deep’.

“He’s quite a strong contested mark, we knew he wouldn’t have to move too far if we got a couple deep into him he’d be able to take a couple marks, and he did that.”

The Mountain Men head across to Whitfield this weekend to take on King Valley, with Harrison not underestimating the number eight side.

WANDI Cross is back again for 2022, with the annual mountain running challenge at Alpine Park to see runners look at summiting the high points of Mystic Mountain and Goldmine Ridge on June 11.

Organisers of the Wandi Cross will donate all funds raised from the event to Wandiligong Primary School.

Wandi Cross consist of four events for people of all running abilities, with the kids’ event spanning 2km and a 5km run.

For those wanting to challenge themselves, there is a half marathon with a climb of 1860m.

Those wanting the ultimate challenge can attempt a marathon with a 3850m climb.

Wandi Cross organiser Matt Cooper is looking forward to this year’s run, knowing there is a challenge for everyone.

“People are driven to do the half marathon and marathon runs because they sometimes don’t think they can do the climb but want to prove themselves wrong,” Cooper said.

“The Wandi Cross is a fun mountain running event, but is definitely a challenge with this year’s course consisting of some steep, technical trails and beautiful views once you reach the top of the mountains.

“Most the people who take on the challenge come back with a smile on their face, which is always good to see.”

Cooper and his team are full of joy to get events like the Wandi Cross back after the COVID pandemic’s difficulties on all occasions.

“There is a lot more paperwork which has to be done but I do feel the Alpine community is getting out and about, supporting local events,” he said.

The Wandi Cross will be held on Saturday, June 11, starting in Alpine Park, with marathon runners setting off at 6am.
