AS GOOD AS GOLD Give your garden some love with a locally made compost that does the dirty work for you They say that all that is gold does not glitter – and in the case of Rhody Gold, that’s certainly true. The Original Gold is a compost made from a mixture of local materials: food scraps and coffee grounds to sawdust and wood chips. It’s produced by The Compost Plant, a commercial operation based out of Providence that is

dedicated to making sustainable soil enhancers for local farmers and gardeners. But you don’t have to have a green thumb: Use it as a top dressing in your home or kitchen garden. Grab a bag from Newport Ace Hardware or Warwick Ace Hardware. CompostPlant.com -Megan Schmit

From South County to Orange County Salon 240 owner shares what it’s like to work with The Real Housewives

Whether you’re a reality TV junkie or not, you’ve likely heard of The Real Housewives of Orange County on Bravo. Amidst all the drama played out on screen, you might find yourself wondering, how do they manage to look so great all the time? Well, there’s a simple answer: They have a team of hair stylists, makeup artists, and clothing experts to make sure they look almost (ironically) unrealistically beautiful. One of those experts is Emily Andre-Murphy of Salon 240 in Westerly. She bought and opened the salon under that name when she was just 21 in 2013, after spending two years as an apprentice and two more years as a licensed cosmetologist there. Then, through happy coincidence, Emily’s “hair bestie” Andrea Harbison, a Nashville resident, got a job working as a hair stylist and extension expert on RHOC.

16

SORhodeIsland.com • May 2019

“After going out there a few times on her own to perform some maintenance on [cast members] Emily Simpson and Gina Kirschenheiter’s hair, she asked me to join in because it’s much easier to do these services with two stylists involved, and we work seamlessly together,” Emily explains. “We call ourselves the ‘Glam Squad’. We go out to LA about every six weeks to maintain their extensions – all from Andrea’s line – and perform color services as well. We usually stay at Gina’s casita, which you can see on the show. Yes, it’s that cute and yes, there are that many pillows!” Occasionally, she’ll even get invited to one of their famous parties; her favorite was Emily Simpson’s birthday bash. “You can imagine my turmoil over what to wear!” Emily jokes. “It was so amazing because it was the night before [Execu-

tive Producer] Andy Cohen’s baby shower, so there were lots of housewives in town, including former RHOC cast member Gretchen Rossi and RHOD [Real Housewives of Dallas] cast member D’Andra Simmons, who attended [the] party. mily introduced us to everyone and they were all so nice!” According to Emily, it feels less like work and more like having fun with friends when she and Andrea go out to LA to work on the show. “We’ve had so many fun adventures with them,” Emily gushes. She lists some, like photoshoots in vintage-deco Beverly Hills hotels, eating sushi in the back of Gina’s minivan, and sipping wine during an Italian lunch. “We always have a fun time when we’re out there.” Westerly, Salon240.Business.site -Alyssa Anderson

This is the Ocean State How South Kingstown-born Dacota Fresilli came to be part of the team behind Childish Gambino’s biggest hit

18

SORhodeIsland.com • May 2019

Dacota is a freelance recording and mixing engineer, splitting his time between Providence and Atlanta for work

studio was on Instagram, he recalls, that he recognized the music and saw it on-screen for the first time. “It isn’t the same without the video,” he insists, “because the video shows what the song is really about, that the lyrics don’t really tell you. It was definitely a very nostalgic and surreal feeling to be part of that.” This past September, Dacota made the

decision to return to Providence to be closer to his younger brother, who just signed to play football at URI next year. “My family and this state mean a lot to me,” he says. So, for now, Dacota jets back and forth between the East Side and Atlanta for meetings and recording sessions. “I try to be Superman,” he jokes. DacotaG.com -Megan Schmit

This time last year, the song “This is America” went viral. The music video and lyrics together painted a powerful picture of race and gun violence in America. It debuted as number one in the US Billboard Hot 100 and had 78,000 downloads and 65.3 million streams within the first week. Then, in February, it took home four Grammys – and made history as the first rap song to win Song of the Year. While artist/rapper Donald Glover (aka Childish Gambino) is the main name attached to its success, it was a team effort. And one of those team members was 26-year-old Rhode Island native Dacota Fresilli. Dacota was born in South Kingstown but calls Providence home. He focused on audio production at Middle Tennessee University, where big names like Chris Young and Amy Lee (of Evanescence) studied. He interned at RCA Records in Atlanta and worked with A-list artists like B.o.B., Cee Lo Green, and Usher. Then, in September 2017, he was settling into Atlanta full-time as a freelance engineer when a gig fell into his lap. “I got a call from a woman at RCA, and she asked me if I would be able to record Donald Glover tomorrow, so I said ‘Yeah, of course,’” Dacota remembers. That day, one of the songs they worked on was “This is America,” which Glover had been toying with for a couple of years. “We did about 300 takes,” Dacota estimates. “A lot of times, an artist will hold onto music, or the powers that be will say ‘Let’s go in a different direction,’ and they won’t use some of it. I go into the situation and do my job and help the artist get the best takes and the best recording they can. At that point, it’s up to them if it’s something they want to use.” That’s the nature of Dacota’s job as a recording and mixing engineer. “Basically, I’m the middle man,” he explains. “You have the ideas, and I have to capture that and make it sound good.” It wasn’t until later, when someone in the

Caught in the Middle Wakefield teen pens her first novel about the trials and tribulations of middle school

Cassidy hopes to empower and inspire young people with her book

A talented visual artist as well as wordsmith, Cassidy’s considering a career in filmmaking or animation to combine the

two. “I want to inspire the world,” she says. “I want to help the weird ones love themselves for who they are.” -Karen Greco

Who knew inspiration could come in the form of a seating chart? But that’s exactly what fueled the imagination of 15-year-old Wakefield resident Cassidy Ferry. “My teacher made a seating chart and stuck me between two other kids,” Cassidy says, describing her seventh-grade science class at Curtis Corner Middle School in Wakefield. “I decided to write a book about it.” Two years, two drafts, and tens of thousands of words later, her debut middle-grade novel The Girl in the Middle became a reality. Front-of-the-classroom Minnie finds herself shoved in the back, stuffed between a grim Goth girl and the boy Minnie has a crush on. “Minnie becomes obsessed with that seating chart because it changes her whole world.” “Minnie is a super smart, sort-of preppy eighth grader,” explains Cassidy. “She’s a sitin-the-front-of-the-classroom sort of girl.” Cassidy’s coming-of-age story has Minnie navigating a new friendship with the Goth girl and a budding romance with the boy. But she’s also grappling with The Wolves, a Mean Girls-type clique that has her in their sights. Then, Minnie’s life is upended by an unexpected medical diagnosis. “Minnie has to learn to accept herself for who she is,” explains Cassidy. Now a freshman at La Salle Academy, Cassidy credits her Curtis Corner English teacher Elizabeth Ferguson with helping her shape her novel. The two worked throughout the school year editing and fine-tuning the story. “Middle schoolers have loads of ambition,” says Elizabeth. “It’s unusual for them to have the stamina and discipline to finish. Cassidy never thought about publishing The Girl in the Middle, so it was a surprise Christmas gift from her mom that turned her words into a published work. The novel took off, even receiving a blurb from Time magazine writer Christopher Ogden, who was “delighted and impressed” with Cassidy’s self-published debut.

Clear Winners Westerly’s wastewater treatment plant receives excellence award from the EPA

Left to right: Justin Pimpare, Nick DeGemmis, and Mark Spinale

You don’t hear much about wastewater treatment. Most people don’t even know where their local facility is. How does all that raw sewage magically transform into clear river water? What happens to the contaminants? And dear lord, what must it smell like? “It’s not easy, what these guys do,” says Bill Patenaude, principal engineer for the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM). “They’re heavily regulated. There’s a lot of self-monitoring. It’s the day-in-day-out grind that we felt needed to be acknowledged.” For years, Bill has been an outspoken advocate for wastewater treatment plants. When facilities run smoothly and environmental standards are met, he wants managers to know how appreciated they are – and this year, the facilities in Westerly and Warren both won awards for excellence from Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The Boston branch of the EPA requests nominations every fall. Each state is responsible for nominating its best facilities, and any wastewater treatment plant in New England is eligible. But for its size, Rhode Island has received a conspicuous number of awards over the years, and 2018 was a typical example: Out of 519 facilities in the region, only five received awards, and two were ours. This is an impressive record, considering we only have 19 plants in the whole state. “Wastewater treatment plants don’t get any of the respect that they should,” echoes Justin Pimpare, Regional Pretreatment Coordinator for the EPA. “But I think the award is something to shoot for. Having a clean environmental record is huge.” What makes a wastewater treatment facility so excellent? Consistency. In smaller communities, a plant may be run by town employees or by a private company; either

way, teams are small, and they must deal with enormous volumes of water and waste. The machinery is massive and complex, and workers must be versed in engineering, chemistry, microbiology, and – of course – hydrology. The water never stops flowing, and neither do the responsibilities. “It isn’t a glamorous job,” says Nick DeGemmis, superintendent of the Westerly plant. “It’s not for everybody. I’ve known guys who started working one day and quit before their first coffee break.” “It all comes down to the interest and desire of the community to properly fund and operate their wastewater facility,” says Bill. “They have a lot of demands on them, and we understand that. It comes down to local pride, and local interest in clean water. For [the workers] to achieve that so humbly and quietly – we didn’t want them to be humble any more.” Westerly -Robert Isenberg

“We’re looking at art here as a way of providing some communication about what the experience was and allowing for conversation to occur,” says Paul Murray, manager of the new Journeys Onward exhibit at the Wickford Art Association. The show sets out to honor artwork that deals with the subject of war. The pieces are all made by local artists who are also veterans themselves, or who have family members who served. Paul’s interest in the subject stems from an exhibit he helped put together at the VETS Memorial Auditorium three years ago, which put a spotlight on local veteran artists. There, he noticed that many attendees would pass through the galleries and feel “amazingly

touched by the work.” Some would comment on how certain pieces would remind them of loved ones who served, and others, Paul says, would ask him: “Does this really have to end?” Observing how art and storytelling would bring total strangers together, he decided that it didn’t have to. Since then, he’s curated shows similar to that first VETS exhibit, bringing a bevy of veteran artists to galleries across the state and even to New London, the home of the United States Coast Guard Academy. Speaking with Paul and his immersion in the subject matter feels like accessing an archive filled with stories about the lingering effects of Agent Orange, family members hoping that their loved ones would return, and community

activism. Journeys Onward is a way of building on the framework that the previous exhibits created, adding to the archive. It incorporates pieces that have been included in past exhibits, but also includes newer ones that the Wickford Art Association selected through a recent call for submissions. This exhibit pairs artists’ personal statements alongside their work, to help make an indescribable experience visible, relaying local stories while also gesturing towards a national community. For Paul, shows such as this one has “a real impact on the community.” Journeys Onward runs from May 17th through June 16th. Wickford, WickfordArt.org -Isabella DeLeo

“One overarching mistake,” says Captain Zach Rollins, “is that people think they know what they’re doing. They assume the weather will stay the same. They assume the boat ahead of them will turn. They think, ‘I’m in the open sea, rules don’t apply to me.’ Most fatal events result from that overconfidence.”

Zach is cheerful, youthful, and built like a Vin Diesel. He spent much of his youth in Wickford, and his family has always owned a boat. He graduated from URI with a degree in Marine Affairs and – just as importantly – he completed the Rhode Island-based training program Confident Captain. There is a handful of such

programs in New England where eager students like Zach learn to oversee 100ton ships. The moment he finished, Confident Captain offered him a job. This year, Rollins is teaching for a new program, Just Go Boating, which helps recreational skippers safely operate their powerboats. Classes cover basic but vital skills, such as docking, using the VHF radio, and navigating at night. “Some students have never stepped into a boat,” says Zach. “Those are the most fun.” The concept began at last year’s Newport International Boat Show, where Confident Captain offered hands-on tutorials for casual boaters. The lessons attracted more than 100 participants, and they ran the gamut of background and experience. Most owned some kind of vessel, but some were lifelong landlubbers. Demand was high, and classes continued after the festival; another 100 or so students signed up, including millionaire CEOs and wounded veterans. Since then, Confident Captain has created a separate brand, with its own curriculum, website, and intended audience. This summer is the true maiden voyage for Just Go Boating, and classes will take place in both Wickford and Providence. Zach says instructors use a “walk before you can run” approach, tailoring lessons to the skill-level of each student. The results are mostly personal; while Confident Captain prepares pupils for a career in ferries and container ships, Just Go Boating helps everyday boaters become safer at sea. Some would-be mariners are cocky and brag about their knot-tying abilities; others are too nervous to grip the wheel. But Zach says that most students end up drifting in the right direction. So, have there been any surprises? “I don’t know if it’s a surprise,” says Zach, “but I’ve found that women are the best students. They’re just better at listening.” Wickford, JustGoBoating.com -Robert Isenberg

The Scoop | rhody gem

The Pub at Matunuck Restaurant & Bar

We are pleased to introduce Rhody Gem, a new monthly column in SO Rhode Island. We’re always being thanked for spotlighting the “hidden gems” of the state, and in our ongoing efforts to leave no stone unturned, we’re putting the call out to our readership! Each month we’ll spotlight a Rhody Gem: a business, artisan, or place lead to us by our faithful readers. What it is: The Pub is a bar with an open air rooftop lounge that overlooks the water. Previously Tara’s Tipperary Tavern, the establishment has been a staple food and drink spot for nearly a century, says manager Karen Recene. “The Pub is an Irish Bar, and is said to be one of the oldest in Rhode Island – it dates back to a speakeasy in the 1920s.”

What makes it a Rhody Gem? Perfectly positioned across the water from Block Island, you can see the landmass if the weather is clear. Does it get any more Rhode Island than having good food and drink by the sea?.

The Pub at Matunuck 907 Matunuck Beach Road, South Kingstown ThePubMtk.com

Photography by Brandon Harmon

Where to find it: Just off Matunuck Beach, you can find this small pub by the water. The building blends in, sporting grey shingle siding like most beachside buildings, but you can’t miss its big logo on the side.

To submit your Rhody Gem, please email Elyse@ProvidenceOnline.com

RUSTIGIAN RUGS,

Rhode Island’s one-stop destination for fine rugs, quality

carpet and expert care, is now an international award-winning store. In January, owner Roz Rustigian traveled to Hannover, Germany where she was hailed as Carpet! magazine's "Retailer of the Year" at the Domotex international flooring fair. The award caps Rustigian Rugs' almost ninety years of excellence in the rug and carpet trade, which all began when "Rusty" Rustigian first hung a modest shingle outside his Benefit Street home. Roz still lives there but moved the business in 1981 to its present showroom, a landmark neoclassical bank building at One Governor Street. From the beginning Rustigian's earned its reputation for service and expertise, helping homeowners and designers select the perfect floor covering to suit their distinctive décor and the demands of daily living. Rustigian's specializes in challenging spaces, spiral staircases, custom projects, and striking just the right balance between luxury and practicality. Their experienced staff is dedicated to the fine art of customer service and well-seasoned in project management. Rustigian’s is Rhode Island’s exclusive dealer of Stark Studio Rugs, Roger Oates runners and other fine brands. A long-standing collaboration with Adler's Hardware enables both stores to blend the advantages of a metropolitan design center with Providence’s convenience and personal touch. We invite you to stop in and see for yourself. Bring photos, swatches or idea boards: Rustigian's will show you an array of rugs and carpets with textures, colors and designs to enhance your home.

The Tuscany Room at Mohegan Sun

By Bob Curley

With the opening of the Twin Rivers’ new Tiverton Casino and the MGM Springfield, Rhode Islanders now have a rich selection of gaming and entertainment options within day-tripping distance. Of the half-dozen casinos in the area, five have hotels if you want to extend a winning streak into the next day. Rather than just rolling the dice on which casino bests suits your interests, we visited them all to compare what they bring to the table.

F

OXWOODS RESORT AND CASINO

If you haven’t been to Foxwoods in a while, it’s easy to feel disoriented. Other than in the original Rainmaker Casino, the tired old green decor is gone, replaced with a kaleidoscope of widely spaced (and brightly lit) gaming floors, attractions, restaurants, shops, and bars. It’s at once all you could want, and a bit much. The good news: With so much room for people to spread out, the casino rarely feels overcrowded, and there are even a few islands of solitude to be found, such as in the Veuve Clicquot champagne lounge on the skybridge connecting the Grand Pequot and Fox Tower hotels, and the small, sedate smoke-free gaming area. The new Play Arena features single dealer playing casino games with multiple gamblers seated at video stations – this is the $5 blackjack that you’ll see advertised around the casino (roulette and baccarat are other options).

Hitting the Jackpot There’s no better casino in New England for people who don’t like to gamble. That’s not to say there aren’t plenty of gaming options, but it’s easy to fill a day here doing literally anything else. Take some laps on the Monza World Class Karting track or soar down the zipline that runs from the top of the Fox Tower to the Mashantucket Pequot Museum three-quarters of a mile away. Rent one of the Topgolf Swing Suites for an hour with friends and test your skills at golf, football, baseball, hockey, and zombie-hunting. When you’ve built up an appetite, Cedars remains a top-notch steakhouse with attentive service.

Why Make the Drive Multiple entertainment options live up to the resort’s “Play All Day” motto. 350 Trolley Line Blvd, Mashantucket, CT • Foxwoods.com

TIVERTON CASINO HOTEL Think of the Tiverton Casino as Twin River’s spunky little brother: it’s got just enough gaming action to keep things interesting (we especially liked their central live table games and stadium gaming setup), plus a little bit of everything else such as a pintsized Race Book and a secret VIP lounge just off the gaming floor. The hotel lacks the pool that Twin River has but shares similarly fresh and calming decor. Hitting the Jackpot A unique air-circulation system blows cigarette smoke up from the gaming floor to ceiling vents where it gets filtered out, so the casino never seems overly smoky. Plus, there are a range of dining options including a Jacky's Galaxie! Why Make the Drive It’s new, it’s clean, and it’s the right size for a quick couple hours of casino action. 777 Tiverton Casino Blvd, Tiverton, RI • TwinRiverTiverton.com

TWIN RIVER CASINO With nearly all vestiges of its dog track days swept away and the recent addition of an attractively designed hotel, Twin River moves closer to the vision of being a destination unto itself rather than a glorified slots parlor. It’s easy to make a nearby night out at Twin River, and occasionally a little more. Hitting the Jackpot Free live shows at the Lighthouse Bar are true events, with top-rated tribute bands and local performers taking the stage in front of a spacious dance floor and several levels of stage-facing seating. The new Twin River Hotel has well-appointed rooms with pleasant nautical decor and amenities like an outdoor pool and fitness center. On the gaming floor, its small size and repeat clientele create personal connections you won’t get at a bigger casino unless you’re a high roller. Why Make the Drive Twin River has most of the amenities of a bigger casino but in compact form, including good performance spaces, ample dining, and a decent selection of gaming options. 100 Twin River Rd, Lincoln, RI • TwinRiver.com

MGM SPRINGFIELD The region’s newest casino puts a different spin on destination gaming with its downtown location and unique decor inspired by local literary heroes like Dr. Seuss and Emily Dickinson. The restaurants here immediately debuted among the city’s best, including the excellent Cal Mare and the welcoming South End Market, a micro-take on Philly’s Reading Terminal Market that puts other food courts to shame. The casino can even make a legitimate wellness claim – not only is it smoke-free, but massages are offered to players.

Catch a show in the Wolf’s Den at Mohegan Sun An outside look at the MGM Springfield

Foxwoods’ Top Golf Swing Suite Hitting the Jackpot We fell in love with the library-themed decor in the hotel lobby – home to an excellent mixology bar serving creatively themed cocktails – as well as the guest rooms, a fun mix of Victorian formality and steampunk flourishes. The integration of the casino with downtown Springfield was impressive: it’s easy to imagine exploring the city in warmer weather and taking in shows in the beautiful plaza laid out between the casino/hotel and historic State Armory building, now a venue for comedy shows and other events. Why Make the Drive With downtown Springfield at your doorstep and attractions like the Basketball Hall of Fame a short walk or free bus ride away, the MGM Springfield feels like a true destination — a feeling enhanced by the refreshingly warm and welcoming hotel. MOHEGAN SUN The Mohegan Sun has stood the test of time, with its original woodsy decor showing no signs of aging and a familiar set of old favorites mixed in with newer dining and entertainment options. The 10,000-seat Mohegan Sun Arena offers a steady slate of professional sports action as well as hosting national touring acts in concert and new Expo Center is a monster that’s set to host the biggest events and shows in New England. The Race Book is still the best (and friendliest) in the region with 200+ individual carrels– each with a personal monitor allowing you to view and listen to the race of your choice. Table limits from $10 to $500 attract players of almost every budget and the Vista Lounge under the planetarium roof on Wombi Rock remains one of the cooler places around to have a cocktail. Hitting the Jackpot If you’re a VIP or just want a splurge, the new Aspire hotel offers spacious suites and access to butler service and a posh lounge, Thirty Three, with private gaming tables, unlimited top-shelf drinks, and gourmet food. The fresh lobster salad and raw bar, steak and salmon entrees, and made-toorder breakfast omelettes served alongside mango mimosas will make you want to eat all your meals here. Why Make the Drive Mohegan Sun isn’t the biggest or the newest casino resort – it just does everything really well. Decor, dining, and entertainment venues are all topnotch and laid out in a warm, friendly, and classy atmosphere that never feels forced or in-your-face. 1 Mohegan Sun Blvd, Uncasville, CT • MoheganSun.com

PLAINRIDGE PARK CASINO This combination harness-racing track and slot parlor just northwest of Providence is good for a quick stop for some video gaming or live racing action in season. Hitting the Jackpot The only fully non-smoking casino within easy driving distance. Why Make the Drive The only casino in the region to offer live horse racing, with a harness-racing schedule that runs April through November. 301 Washington St, Plainville, MA 02762 • PlainridgeParkCasino.com

RHODY STYLE A trio of South County interior designers share tips for making the most of any space

We live in a state with a wide variety of homes each with different challenges and charms. For many of us, design inspiration comes from various sources – magazines, television shows, and even social media. However, South County is filled with talented interior designers, so we thought we’d tap three creative brains for ideas and take-aways to inspire and use in our own living spaces. We talked to Kim Peterson from KEP Interior Designs, about how to infuse new life into a stately older house without compromising any character; Robin Garceau of Robin Garceau Interiors shares a decorator’s trick for making different sized windows appear cohesive in a single space; and Marisa Navakauskas and Kaitlin Dillon from DiStefano Brothers Construction, Inc. explain how a series of small dark rooms became an expansive cook’s kitchen – with a view.

DESIGN TIP When working with bold tones, disperse same-color accessories throughout the room for your eye to follow. Treat the room as a whole, not as individual elements

Even patterned draperies can act as neutrals

The air of luxury does not have to be unapproachable. It should elevate your lifestyle but still be a warm and welcoming environment.

Keep bold artwork consistent with the colors throughout the room

Robin Garceau, Designer

Wondering how to treat tall arch top windows? This pair proved especially problematic as the side windows are much lower than the arched, causing the room to look off center as you enter from the foyer. To create consistency and height, Robin Garceau designed draperies to be mounted up to the ceiling. Robin notes that the lengthy panels camouflage the contrasting windows so the differences aren’t obvious, while also creating a subtle yet elegant backdrop for furniture and accessories. To make the off-centered feeling more cohesive and balanced, Robin chose bold artwork and accents consistent with the colors throughout the room.

Marisa Navakauskas, DBC Design Team

When a couple of foodies moved to Wakefield from Western Massachusetts, they wanted a cooking space with a sense of place. While they were happy with the location, the home’s first floor was comprised of four small, dark rooms. Kaitlin Dillon of DBC worked with the clients to create an open floor plan ideal for cooking and hosting all while enjoying waterfront views from all areas on the home. Beyond the cosmetic, the transformation began with removing the large load-bearing wall running down the center of the first floor. The space was remodeled into one large room with an oversized professional-style kitchen boasting a central island for gathering and entertaining, and plenty of windows.

I loved researching some of the history of the home, while adding to its future. Kim Peterson, Designer

Just because a home is over a century old doesn’t mean it needs to look dated. For this client, Kim Peterson of KEP Interior Designs knew she wanted the fireplace – original to the 1895 property – to serve as a focal point. “To keep [it] intact we wanted to use cool, soft colors along with the depth and warmth of the brick, all while maintaining the integrity of the home’s age. I came up with the soft palette and then added the pop of brick-red in pillows to tie the fireplace into the design,” says Kim.

Anyone who has played in a local sports league knows there’s always that one guy who takes it all a bit too seriously: Pounding his chest after making a catch in flag football, flipping the bat like he just won the World Series with a hit, or playing all elbows in pickup basketball. That’s the furthest thing from what the Super Fun Activities Club (SFAC) – a sports league whose mascot is a giant rubber duckie, and whose commissioner is known as “Quack The Duck” – is all about. “SFAC’s main goal is to bring good people

together, make connections that wouldn’t otherwise happen, and enhance the overall happiness in our area,” says SFAC co-founder and activities coordinator Jeremy Dubois. “There are tons of sports leagues that people can play in. Many of them are very similar. What truly separates SFAC is that we are about people, not sports.” SFAC organizes a wide range of co-ed activities, including flag football, softball, dodgeball, pillow polo, soccer, and volleyball leagues. The games are competitive – up to a point. Scores are kept, and people

try to win. But tolerance for trash-talking is close to zero. “Should everyone play in SFAC? Definitely not,” says Jeremy. “We are geared toward people who want to make social connections, see the bigger picture in life, and whose happiness and self-worth doesn’t hinge on whether or not they ‘won’ at a children’s game that evening.” If the ducks seem silly, it’s entirely intentional, Jeremy explains. “Part of appealing to the right kind of people is creating a vibe and atmosphere that fits the culture,” he says. “When people see a rubber duck, their typical reactions are thoughts of being playful, cheerful, young, and happy.” It’s a formula that’s won a lot of fans – and players – in Rhode Island. “I work a high-stress job, and SFAC had been the outlet and getaway I need during the week,” says Alisha Means, a social worker from North Kingstown who has played football and other sports with SFAC. “It’s one of the things I participate in for my own personal self-care. Because of SFAC, I have been able to meet amazing people and make great friends; they have become a second family for me.” “Some of my best experiences have been not only the sports leagues but the events that SFAC has,” says Kelsey Tewksbury of Pawtucket. “Beach dodgeball, football on the weekends, fundraisers, and so much more give me the opportunity to meet and play sports with people that weren’t on my team.” “Becoming part of the SFAC community is absolutely more important than the sports themselves,” agrees Jeremy. “If you’re playing [sports], you’ll be getting a lot of steps on your Fitbit. If you’re having conversations and social interaction, you’ll have more meaningful people in your life. It’s certainly a win-win.”

This Net-Zero House A Jamestown home gets an efficiency makeover By Andrea E. McHugh Photos by Anthony Tieuli

Binge-watch the entire process of restoring the charm of this Jamestown bungalow while also making it energy efficient on This Old House. Find links and details at ThisOldHouse.com.

Architect Donald Powers has designed a number of “net-zero” communities with his firm over the years; that is, communities with homes that over the course of a full year, make as much energy as they use. Finally, he was tired of only talking the talk and sought to walk the walk. Along with his wife Dana and teenage sons Nate and Theo, Donald set out to find a home of their own to renovate and make net-zero. They found a 1,000-square-foot cottage in Jamestown built in the 1920s with two bedrooms and one bath. “That didn’t really matter to us because we knew we’d be completely gutting into the stud and starting over,” explains Donald, who ultimately doubled the size of the home. Although the Powers family already had four home renovations under their belt, this project was different. “The hardest part is getting the whole design and construction team to buy into the goals and pay attention to the details as they are building it,” says Donald. “We had a great team who all really got it.” He says his contractors knew what they were getting into and all the critical areas that needed to be addressed. “It’s all about reducing load and maximizing solar,” explains Donald.

The Jamestown Net-Zero Home features a 5.5 kilowatt solar panel system from Vivint Solar to offset the energy use. A dark, earth tone shingle complements the black panels and keeps them from upstaging the well manicured backyard oasis

In the winter, he explains, homes are typically net-negative when you are using more energy than the solar can produce. “In the summer, it switches, and you hope to be exporting energy to the grid. Over the whole year, you are trying to balance production of energy with the use of it.” Donald specifically designed the barn to have a long, south-facing slope to carry a lot of solar panels by Vivint Solar, a residential solar provider. There are other factors that contribute to its maximum efficiency. The house is insulated to about double the required minimum, has triple-glazed windows, and it is sealed against air leakage about three times better than the average new home. “Also, all of the fixtures, appliances, and systems are the highest efficiency possible,” adds Donald. Besides the obvious benefit of little to no electric bill, Donald says the home is very comfortable due to the very little amounts of air flow required from the heating and cooling. “There are absolutely no drafts in the house,” he says. “It’s also extremely quiet — the triple glazed windows and the insulation really cut down on the noise transfer from the outside.” “Even if you do not actually produce any energy through solar, the techniques of building a very well insulated, well air-sealed house requires a very good insulation system to bring in fresh air and manage humidity,” says Donald. “No house, no matter how well built to be net zero, [will be] if the occupants leave the lights on or windows open in the winter or are generally wasteful in how they live.”

White walls, windows, and floors left bare, repeated vertical lines, and natural wood combine to create a sense of flow in the open spaces of the Powers’ home.

Founder of Coastal Canine Dog Training Comfort is a top priority when it comes to outfitting myself for the day. I like neutral colors and soft, durable fabrics. Tight pants don’t cut it for my active lifestyle, therefore a proper pair of Levis, KÜHL, PrAna, or Columbia pants do me right. My hair can get in the way sometimes, and when you are working with a problematic dog you can’t afford to be distracted, so I’ll often wear a curved brim trucker hat. I always have a pair of polarized sunglasses on hand, especially since they are prescription. On cooler days, I like to wear a wool sweater and a full-zip insulated hoodie. Flannels are a daily must and I’m a huge fan of merino and alpaca under-layers. My ultimate pair of treads are Danner Mountain 600 boots. Nothing beats them and you’ll find me wearing them in the summer due to the fact that they are so comfortable. If I go out, I’ll put on an English spread collar button-down and sweater and jeans. I’ve had the same two pairs of Nike Air leather-soled Cole Haan cap-toe oxfords, which I love and have accompanied me through some memorable parties. When it comes to getting fancy, I choose one of my custom-made suits by Astor & Black. Jamestown is the ‘Bees Knees.’ I love the coast, hence the reason I named my company Coastal Canine. I grew up sailing, fishing, surfing, and using the ocean to its fullest, so I wouldn’t be able to imagine my life without the deep blue. The community in Jamestown stays true, especially if you’re a year-rounder. We all take pride in supporting our local businesses. Before moving back home, I was living in LA, training dogs, and running a military/ police K9 training facility. It was loads of fun, but something triggered me to move back. I think the quality of life is better and I can easily access all my favorite hobbies. I love all of my clients wherever I am, but there is a bit of pride bringing the foreign experiences and knowledge I received from the widespread dog industry back into Rhode Island.

KEP Interiors is fantastic! Great eye for mixing

color and textures. She is very professional, polite, and eager to find the perfect mix for the project and has abundant resources. I worked with Kim on multiple rooms in my newly renovated home and LOVE how everything looks. KEP comes highly recommended.

SIPPIN’ SAVORY The Savory Grape offers tastings for all palates and levels of expertise For some, beverage tastings can be undaunting – a time to relax, socialize, and engage in sophisticated conversation about sophisticated products. For others, the event can be uncomfortable because they’re unfamiliar with the beverages and the way to approach enjoying them. At The Savory Grape, however, General Manager Tulay Lawton assures us that their tastings are for all levels of wine, beer, and spirit lovers. Tastings at The Savory Grape are somewhat of a cocktail soiree. At the event itself, there are a variety of bottles presented to the guests, each centered around a theme and paired with cheese and crackers from Dave’s Market. Tulay says, “We have the most amazing customers who love to talk about wine with us. They’re a lot of fun.” And, what enhances these tastings are the interactions that guests get to have

with the makers themselves who occasionally attend. The East Greenwich liquor purveyor also prides itself on supporting local and regional winemakers, distillers, and brewers like Sons of Liberty, Newport Craft, Grey Sail, Whalers, and Fool Proof, to name a few. What’s the best way to enjoy a Savory Grape tasting? According to Tulay, just have fun. The staff has prepared the activity to be light and educational with very little knowledge or expertise required. “Come with an open mind, try new bottles, and don’t be afraid to ask questions...We love talking about wine and there’s nothing more gratifying than helping a customer find a new favorite.” The Savory Grape hosts tastings weekly on Fridays from 4pm-7pm and on Saturdays from 2pm-4pm and 4pm-6pm. I’ll Have What North Kingstown’s Having

Hell’s Kitchen

As a native New Yorker, it’s hard not to be snobby and jaded about almost anything, especially when it comes to theater and food. New Yorkers get serious about their sandwiches – from a sausage, egg, and cheese on an everything bagel at a bodega, to a thick pastrami on rye with just the right amount of mustard at Katz’s Deli – they’re our go-to’s, and we love them dearly. So, when I walked into The Provisioner on a sunny Saturday afternoon, I left my jaded standards at the door, ready to accept whatever this “New York-style” deli had to offer. And I’m so glad that I did. The sandwich shop is not a small hole in the wall. Clean, industrial farm-style furniture is neatly feng shui-ed throughout the expanse of the eatery; a nod perhaps to the farms of North Kingstown. An antique bike is mounted on the crisp white wall. It’s about the only mount in the seating area. The rest of the decor is reserved for the expansive menu etched in chalk marker mounted to the right of the cash register. Ordering from The Provisioner menu is like

having to choose which Harry Potter movie to watch when you only have the time and the patience to watch one. The choice is almost impossible. Lucky for my girlfriend and me, we were there to taste almost everything, and no, our order didn’t come with a hand truck to wheel us out at the end. The menu is full of meat options (beef, chicken, and turkey) with some vegetarian combinations interspersed. The Provisioner sandwich ($9.95), named after the store itself, was tender and delicious. Braised beef with caramelized onions and sauteed mushrooms was piled on top of porous, crackling ciabatta bread. With each bite you could taste the time and the care it took to slowly cook the toughness out of the meat. The sandwich could’ve done with a quick pickled cucumber or red onion to bring a crunch and bright balance to the heavier flavors of the beef. Equally as satisfying are the T-Bird ($9.95) and Riker’s Island ($9.95) sandwiches. The T-Bird combines all of your favorite elements of Thanksgiving into one sandwich. Turkey,

The Tribeca with Seared Ahi Tuna

stuffing, and the cranberry sauce condense until you can’t figure out where the turkey ends and the stuffing begins. This amalgamation is topped with melted cheddar cheese that adds a decadent element of fat, balancing out the sweetness of the cranberry and the leanness of the turkey. Riker’s Island is one of the most balanced sandwiches on the menu. Light, peppery, lemon-dressed greens complement the richness of the fried mozzarella and deliciously unctuous prosciutto to bring a fresh tang to the sandwich. Sides are also a must at this sandwich shop. Hand-Cut Truffle Parmesan Fries ($5.25) arrive in front of you, a heap of golden-brown goodness with parmesan sprinkled like a sputtering of snow all over the dish. If you’re feeling really indulgent, order The Pothole ($5.95), a concoction of mac and cheese garnished with their red wine-braised beef.

That’s Amore Passion and love for pizza bring a Pizzaolo and culinary association together

Photography (top) by Ron Cowie, photo (bottom) courtesy of Sophie’s Brewhouse

On an overcast Friday evening in April, seven well-dressed men gathered around a table at Pasquale’s Pizza ‘A Napulitana in South Kingstown. Wine glasses full, they took turns letting out a convivial laugh, telling stories, and affectionately slapping each other on the back.

Lively conversation in Italian and English seemed to reverberate throughout the restaurant, making this gaggle of guests and the owner, Pasquale Illiano, the most animate group in the place. Pasquale’s guests hail from Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana (APVN), an international organization that finds authentic Neapolitan pizzerias all over the world who make the dish according to their strict requirements. The group then gives them a special designa-

machinery should come from Italy. “Every element on the Neapolitan pizza is key. We cannot just focus on the crust, we have to focus on the crust as well as we have to focus on the cheese, on the tomato we use, the finishing olive oil we use, and even the basil is key,” says Pasquale. The owner explains that when Italian immigrants came over to the United States in the early 1900s, they didn’t have access high-qual-

tion to denote authenticity. Lucky for Rhode Islanders, Pasquale’s earned this designation several years ago. AVPN President Antonio Pace and President for the Americas Peppe Miele, renewed the owner’s standing as a trustee for New England. What drew the APVN to Pasquale’s? According to Peppe, the small restaurant sought out the nonprofit, and the food spoke for itself. A Neapoltian pie is unlike a New York slice or a piece of Chicago deep dish. Proof of real Neapolitan pizza is in the details – from the oven to the tomatoes, all of the ingredients and the

ity Italian products. So, the American version of this dish was born. Now that global product exchange is common, pizzaiolos like Pasquale can get the ingredients they need to preserve a centuries-old authentic recipe. Pasquale and the APVN have had a close relationship for seven or eight years. Now when the group meets up annually, they talk about pizza and reminisce about what this simple food means to them. Antonio, Peppe, and Pasquale agree that above all, pizza is passion, pizza is love. South Kingstown, PasqualesPizzeriaRI.com

Breaking Ground What makes Sophie’s Brewhouse coffee taste great? “It’s our water,” says owner Pam Machon. “Believe it or not, that’s what makes it taste great, everything starts with a good foundation.” In the coming months, caffeinated beverages will not be the only thing that needs a solid foundation. Pam’s cafe will break new ground to put an addition onto the building with a new space for a bar and outdoor seating. In 2008, Pam took over Sophie’s, playing around with different renditions of the name. After a family loss, selling the business, buying it back again, and renovating it some years later, Pam and her husband settled on Sophie’s Brewhouse. This particular title is a play on words because the establishment would like to sell both coffee and beer throughout the day. Pam explains that the inspiration for her cafe/bar came

from her restaurant and bartending roots. “My nana owned a bar when I was young and before she owned a soda shop and bar, so I thought this would be an homage to her.” Although the coffee shop has a liquor license, Pam says that they have yet to make the most of it because the space is not big enough to house a full bar. This lack of room has been the impetus for the new addition so that Sophie’s can finally live up to its double entendre name. For now, the locale serves craft beer brewed in the Ocean State like Whalers, Narragansett, and Grey Sail, and wine on the weekends to accompany musical performances as a way to promote and celebrate the ground breaking. Anchorpoint

During a ski trip to Vermont, Bob Leonard stopped into an old colonial building. The Green Mountains are full of 18th century cottages, but Leonard was startled to discover that the electric lights were switched off, replaced entirely with flickering wax candles. “We didn’t get 10 steps in the door, and we said to ourselves, ‘This would be perfect for the Coast Guard House,’” remembers Leonard. “We’re always looking to play up the history of the place.” As manager and co-owner of the Coast Guard House, the famed seaside restaurant that has served elegant dinners since the 1940s, Bob is deeply interested in the building’s significance to Narragansett. For the past two winters, the restaurant has hosted monthly candlelit dinners, using the early dusk for anachronistic romance. The dinners have been a hit, and they showcase the Coast Guard House’s strongest impulse: to combine the stone building’s century-old legacy with thoughtful and accessible events. “Any event we do, we talk about as a group,” says Bob. “We’re all about the teamwork. The way my partners and I look at it, we’re taking care of the building. For the state of Rhode Island, it’s part of the fabric. So many people come through the restaurant. They have family memories, from generations ago coming here as a kid. They have pictures of their great-grandparents in front of the restaurant.” Before its reinvention as a dining establishment, the Coast Guard House served as an actual station for U.S. Life Saving Service, a predecessor to the Coast Guard. Unlike the military, this Narragansett branch hired mostly local recruits, who quartered inside the building, their beds standing within spitting distance of their rescue boats; Bob compares the arrangement to an old firehouse. The Coast Guard House has enjoyed an historical renaissance this past year; the National Archives is compiling a wealth of information about the site, which Bobhopes

to display somewhere in the dining area. The restaurant has also started hosting monthly history dinners, where the head of the South County Museum recounts the narrative of Narragansett. Meanwhile, the team hosts regular beer and wine nights, which pair four- or five-course dinners with a range of hand-picked libations. Bob grew up in Brooklyn and central New Jersey, and he came to Rhode Island as a student at Johnson & Wales. He’s long fallen in love with his adoptive state; the beaches remind him of childhood trips to the shore with his grandfather. Each day, he can see the Narragansett coastline from the restaurant’s panoramic windows, the same boulder-strewn view his predecessors saw in the

19th century. For Bob, that fraternal tradition continues to the present day. “I always tell our customers, our staff is the most important thing to me,” he says. “Customers say, ‘Wait a minute, we should be the most important thing.’ And I’m like, ‘You’re right there, right behind my staff.’ Because it takes us all to give people a nice dinner and a nice experience. And we have a great group of people. Customers get to enjoy this beautiful view, but that hospitality is why they come.”
