Reimagining The Mount’s Café

A Vision for Community, Connection, and Fun!

Imagine stepping into a space where the aroma of delicious meals meets the sounds of laughter and music. A place where residents and their families can share meaningful moments around elegant, yet moveable tables, or enjoy a movie night with crystal-clear projection, surrounded by curtains that shift the ambiance from day to night. Picture a festive Thanksgiving feast with family, a cozy Christmas dinner surrounded by twinkling lights, or a lively Fourth of July barbecue with music and cheer.

This vision is closer to becoming a reality as we plan to remodel our current cafeteria on the second floor. The transformation will turn an ordinary space into a wonderful hub of connection, entertainment, and joy. But we need your help to make it happen.

Right now, the current setup and furnishings are holding us back. The outdated dining tables are too heavy for Mount caregivers to move easily and make it challenging to flex the space for various activities. The lack of advanced projection equipment and modern layout restricts the kind of entertainment we can provide, and cords for free-standing speakers are taped to the floor. Mount residents deserve a space that reflects the vibrancy of their lives and the warmth of our community. The total cost of remodeling

From Our Board of Directors

Sr.

As we celebrate the Centennial Anniversary of Providence Mount St. Vincent, I feel immense gratitude and humility reflecting on my 10 years of service on the foundation board. It has been one of the great privileges of my life to support this incredible place that cared so deeply for my own family—John and Mary Yellam—and to help carry forward the mission of the Sisters of Providence. Their legacy of compassion has inspired us all, a commitment built on faith, determination, and the belief that every person deserves dignity and care in their later years.

The Sisters of Providence, with visionary dedication, established The Mount over 100 years ago as a safe, loving environment for the elderly, the vulnerable, and those who needed it most. They understood that to truly provide for others, they would need the strength of an entire community, united by shared values and the commitment to serve. Their mission was never about grand gestures or recognition but rather about creating a place where everyone was treated like family and every person was met with kindness, respect, and love.

Today, The Mount continues to flourish as a beacon of compassion, thanks to the dedication of our foundation leadership, caregivers, and staff who serve with humility and love. But to keep this legacy alive, it requires the commitment of everyone who believes in this mission. We need the continued support of our community—individuals, families, donors, and friends—to step up, just as the Sisters once did, and help secure a future where The Mount can continue to provide comfort and dignity to those who need it most.

As we look to the future, let us honor the Sisters’ legacy together, knowing that our combined dedication will light the way for generations to come. Thank you for being part of this journey and for helping us carry this vital mission forward.

2024 Donor Support

More than ever the need for charitable support was first and foremost. Thanks to our generous donors, the Foundation was able to continue the work fundamental to the Sisters of Providence’s vision when they founded The Mount in 1924 to care for the poor and vulnerable.

Providence Mount St. Vincent Foundation provided over $2,270,000 of financial support in 2024 through the following areas:

Charitable Support

2024 Highlights

• Summer Concerts welcomed the West Seattle community for the first time since the pandemic for this signature Mount event.

• Drama Productions at The Mount and Intergenerational Art Studio continued throughout 2024 bringing joy to the very young and the very old— together again.

• The Centennial events were a time of great pride and celebration for our community and residents!

and furnishing this space is estimated at $250,000. However, thanks to the support of the Foundations’ Board of Directors, we are off to a good start. The board has committed to match up to $100,000 for every dollar raised. To complete this project, we must raise the remaining funds through donations and grants. Work cannot begin until we reach our fundraising goal, so we need your help.

This transformed space will be more than a cafeteria— it will be a community hub; a stage for performers; it will be The Entertainment Heart of The Mount.

Will you join us in creating this special place for Mount residents and their families? Your support can make all the difference.

Let’s make this dream a reality, together.

Intergenerational Activities Are Back in 2024!

Since 1991, The Mount’s Intergenerational Programming has been a beacon of connection, fostering meaningful relationships between the very young and the very old. Throughout these 34 years, a countless number of residents and Intergenerational Learning Center (ILC) students have engaged through various activities that strengthen bonds across the generations, such as Intergenerational Art Studio, Drama Productions, and sandwich lunch making for the homeless.

These activities not only enrich the lives of both the young and old but also foster a wonderful sense of community and family. The children gain a natural comfort with their resident “grand friends” fostering excellent relationship and communications skills and in turn residents experience immense joy, meaning and purpose as they mentor and engage with their young friends.

These intergenerational programs that make this Magic at The Mount possible, are funded exclusively by our generous donors to the PMSV Foundation.

Thank you for supporting this priceless impact across the generations at The Mount!

Residents and ILC children have great fun exercising together.
The joy grows even with the smallest interactions.
Right now, projecting a simple movie requires awkward equipment set up, taking space that could welcome more residents.

Volunteer Spotlight: Meet Michelle Audino and Her Gift of Flowers

Once a month, and sometimes more depending on holidays, Michelle Audino arrives at The Mount with a car full of carefully handcrafted floral arrangements to decorate the tables in the café.

For the past three years, Michelle has donated and personally delivered her seasonal centerpieces to The Mount, bringing joy, conversation, and connection to residents daily. Michelle began arranging flowers as a hobby and wanted to share her talents with the community. A friend suggested donating them to older adults in assisted living or skilled nursing homes.

Inspired by her strong Catholic faith, she decided to find a Catholic organization to share her gift with. She recalled Providence, where she was introduced to The Mount and learned they would happily accept flowers for the café for the community to enjoy.

Director of Dining Services, Malinda Gehrke, says, “When the flowers arrive, everyone perks up, and you can see all the conversations about how beautiful they are. The gardeners will identify and reminisce about growing different flowers. It is quite the event.”

Michelle is often inspired by Pinterest and purchases flowers from NW Wholesale Florist or wherever she can find the stems to make the perfect arrangement. She recalls being thanked by a resident who said, “It lets us know that someone cares.” She says the more she comes to The Mount, meets the residents, and learns how happy the flowers make them, she realizes her hobby has a greater purpose.

Michelle’s gift of 30+ flower arrangements per month is profoundly meaningful to residents and staff, as it not only brightens the environment but also uplifts the spirits of the community.

Donors of Providence Mount St. Vincent give in many ways. If you are interested in learning about how you can contribute, please contact Jessica Sherman at 206-938-6194.

A special thank you to The Fred H. and Mary S. Dore Foundation for sponsoring our new LiteGait to improve rehabilitation care here at The Mount.

The new LiteGait is a game-changer for our rehab patients, bringing strength, stability, and renewed hope to their recovery journey.

After 30 years of dedication, Bob Butzerin and Charlene Boyd reflect on memories at his retirement celebration.
The Mount’s leadership team rolled up their sleeves to support caregiver engagement.

The Journey

After years of anticipation, The Mount’s centennial anniversary finally arrived. While our official celebrations began in January 2024, the journey truly started in late 2023 with our Legacy Letter Campaign. We invited our community to share their personal stories, reflecting on The Mount’s impact and why our mission should continue for the next one hundred years.

The response was extraordinary. Reading our community’s experiences served as a heartwarming reminder of how deeply impactful The Mount has been to the community. Many of these letters were placed in a new Time Capsule, crafted and generously donated by NUCOR Steel Seattle, and sealed earlier this year. NUCOR Steel (then Seattle Steel) also provided the original steel for the construction of St. Vincent Home for the Aged in 1923.

“ Our family has incredible gratitude for all the care, the fun, the spirituality and most of all the love my mother was given and was able to return to all those who made her life (and ours!) so peace-filled.”
– Kelly Sullivan Burrows, Mount family member

With these stories preserved, The Mount was ready to step into 2024—our official centennial year. It was a time of extraordinary celebration, honoring both our past and the people who made it all possible.

Our first major event was the Centennial Mass on January 24, 2024—exactly 100 years to the day the Sisters first called The Mount home. This sacred day was followed by The Centennial Open House day, on April 26, which included the Re-dedication ceremony, the opening of the time capsule, and much more.

Honoring the Past, Embracing the Future

As the year unfolded, we continued recreating special moments from our history.

In 1923, during the laying of the cornerstone, The Mount’s founders and contractors gathered on the highest floor built at that time for a commemorative photo. In their honor, we recreated that image on the current highest point, the roof. Standing together were descendants of the original founders, longtime partners, Board members, and Mount leadership, capturing a fullcircle moment, a century in the making.

To everyone who joined, volunteered, or supported us during this milestone year, thank you. The Mount has always thrived because of its people, and this century of commitment, community, and compassion would not have been possible without you.

As we turn the page to the next chapter, we invite you to enjoy this special recap. A tribute to the legacy we’ve built together, and cheers to the next one hundred years of extraordinary care and service to those most in need.

Dreams

When the Sisters of Providence were called to serve in the West in 1856, times were extraordinarily challenging. They made their home in a one room cabin and set a cot next to the fire for an elderly man who had nowhere else to go. In the early 1900s, Sr. Mary Conrad Kratz, in her rounds of visiting the poor and sick in Seattle, dreamed of a place where the elderly would be given adequate care and housing. In 1920, Frank M. Sullivan, former director of Dexter Horton National Bank, visited Sr. Mary Conrad and invited other local business leaders to share the same dream.

“ When this was built, we were a beacon on the hill, a light, and we still are that light. We’re still a beacon of hope.”

Possibilities

And since the doors opened in 1924, people have arrived in need. In fact, today many come to The Mount in crisis. They have tried to make it work at home or other places, that can’t meet their needs for care.

The Mount not only offers a place to live, but a place to thrive. Providence Mount St. Vincent is a place filled with excellent care as well as community, love, and engagement. Gifts to the Providence Mount St. Vincent Foundation contribute significantly to making The Mount’s extraordinary community possible.

Yet the lion share of philanthropic support for The Mount funds charitable care at over $1 million each year. The annual operating gap of Medicaid underfunding at The Mount however is over $4.4 million.

The Mount is a place where your generosity helps turn peace of mind and the experience of joy from a possibility… into reality. Residents know they can continue to make The Mount their home, even when savings are exhausted.

A priceless gift.

The legacy established by the Sisters of Providence is rooted in faith, selfless service, and compassion. They gifted The Mount with a legacy of love that continues to guide and inspire our mission.

Just as the Sisters relied on philanthropy in the past to turn their vision into reality, we too depend on the generosity of donors like you to provide exceptional care, a welcoming home, and peace of mind to our residents, assuring them that they will always be cared for with the utmost dignity and respect.

In 2024, our Legacy of Love campaign successfully raised over $600,000 in honor of the Sisters and in support of charity care at The Mount. While the monetary value of this achievement is substantial, the true impact it generates is immeasurable. Each dollar raised contributes to our ongoing commitment to care for the poor and vulnerable, ensuring that this sacred ministry endures for future generations.

Your continued support empowers Providence Mount St. Vincent to thrive as a place that not only feels like home but truly is home. It is a place where generations come together, fostering a unique and enriching environment for all.

Our deepest gratitude to everyone who has supported the Legacy of Love campaign and other initiatives throughout the years. Your generosity and commitment have been instrumental in enabling us to uphold the mission of the Sisters of Providence, and to continue providing compassionate care and support to those in need.

Centennial Celebrations

January 24, 2024—Centennial Mass

Our centennial celebrations began in grand fashion with the Centennial Mass and luncheon, a heartfelt tribute marking the day the Sisters of Providence relocated and established St. Vincent Home for the Aged, as well as making this their new headquarters and novitiate. This sacred event, held exactly 100 years after that momentous move, was led by the Most Reverend Paul Etienne, Archbishop of Seattle.

The Mass was a deeply moving ceremony, graced by the presence of a many members of our community. Among those in attendance were Mount residents and their families, dedicated caregivers, and esteemed members of both Providence and Mount leadership. The occasion was further enriched by the honorable presence of the Sisters of Providence, whose unwavering dedication and vision have shaped our mission and legacy, along with representatives from other religious orders who joined in the celebration.

Following the Mass, the community gathered for a luncheon, providing an opportunity for reflection, connection, and joyous celebration of this historic milestone. The day was a beautiful testament to the enduring spirit of community, faith, and compassion that has defined The Mount for a century.

It truly takes a village—caregivers, board members, and volunteers joined forces to help with Centennial Mass.

Centennial Celebrations

April 26, 2024—Centennial Open House

Re-Dedication Ceremony

The Re-Dedication Ceremony was a deeply significant event, serving as both a tribute to the pioneering work initiated by the Sisters in 1924 and a pledge to uphold their mission for generations to come. This ceremony allowed us to reflect on nearly a century of unwavering dedication to serving the poor and vulnerable, a legacy that has been the cornerstone of The Mount’s existence since its inception.

Among those presents were community leaders, descendants of the original founders, and the honorable presence of the Sisters of Providence.

One of the most important moments of the ceremony was the opening of the historic time capsule from 1923, by NUCOR Steel.

The Re-Dedication Ceremony was a powerful reminder of our collective responsibility. It invigorated our resolve to continue providing compassionate care and support to those in need, ensuring that the vision of the Sisters of Providence endures. Our commitment to service remains as strong as ever, promising many more decades of dedication, compassion, and community.

Big Hug Photo

A beloved West Seattle tradition was brought to life at The Mount, uniting our vibrant community for the Big Hug Photo. Community members, residents, family members, volunteers, children from our Intergenerational Learning Center (ILC), and dedicated caregivers all came together, proudly wearing our centennial t-shirts. This will undoubtedly be one of the most cherished moments from such an extraordinary day.

Centennial Celebrations

Centennial Open House

In the spirit of our centennial celebration, a travel through time event was the perfect fit! Honoring the vibrant eras of the Roaring 20s, the Sock Hop of the 1950s, and the electrifying Rock ‘n’ Roll of the 60s and 70s, we created an unforgettable day filled with music, dance, and timeless memories. Guests were encouraged to showcase their era-appropriate attire, with flapper dresses, poodle skirts, and leather jackets making stylish appearances throughout the event.

As the sun began to set, we transitioned into the evening with a special outdoor screening of the beloved classic, “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.” Families and friends gathered, wrapped in our cozy centennial blankets that were distributed to each guest.

The excitement of the children eagerly participating in a golden ticket hunt was a heartwarming bonus, mirroring the whimsical adventure of the movie.

ew Capsule N

A New Time Capsule for The Next Generations

On January 22nd, 2025, we marked the end of the centennial celebrations by sealing our new time capsule, a symbolic gesture designed to preserve our rich legacy and share our story with future generations. This event brought together Mount caregivers, the Sisters of Providence, and special guest Mark Davis along with his dedicated team from NUCOR Steel Seattle.

The ceremony was the perfect conclusion to our centennial year. As we gathered to commemorate this milestone, and placed the items in the capsule, we reflected on the profound impact The Mount has had over the past century. A reminder of our journey, our accomplishments, and the countless lives touched by the compassion and care that define The Mount.

As we look forward to the next chapter in our story, we remain deeply grateful to everyone who has been a part of this incredible journey.

Santa stopped by to spread the Christmas cheer throughout The Mount—one smile at a time!
the season! Carolers filled the long term care neighborhoods with the joy of music.

Introducing: Hallelujah Lights

We were delighted to bring to you “Hallelujah Lights” as an extension to our Hallelujah Trees year-end campaign. It was a cozy evening, with candle-lighting, community, and remembrance in memory of our loved ones who are no longer with us.

Our first event featured Starry Crowns’ beautiful music, and lighting of our Singing Tree.

Stay tuned for more details about this year’s Hallelujah Lights.

Together in remembrance, the Spiritual Care team and caregivers joined us for this special event.

A special thank you to Margaret Purcell and Susan Clark, PMSVF Board Members and Event Chairs, for their tremendous support of 2024 Black Tie Bingo.

Black Tie Bingo Raises Critical Funds for The Mount!

The 25th Black Tie Bingo—and the first one in person after many years— was a wonderful success! Together we raised more than $300,000 of critically needed funds to support Charitable Care and Wonderful Life programming.

THANK YOU to all who participated. We couldn’t have done it without you!

Top Hats and Tiaras

Inspired by Black Tie Bingo, The Mount’s Top Hats and Tiaras dessert dash happened in October. Caregivers dressed up and distributed special desserts and sparkling beverages to the residents—all in celebration of the neighborhoods reaching their fundraising goals!

Assisted Living Activities Supervisor, Suzanne Gollhofer (on the left) is the Bingo Caller at Top Hats and Tiaras. Thank you, Suzanne, for such a fun event for the residents!
