In today’s economy, the bar for entry-level jobs seems to just keep getting higher and higher. A bachelor's degree is no longer the golden ticket to a decent-paying job, but rather one of the many requirements AI-resume scanners look for. This has led to an increased interest in co-ops, internships, and work-integrated learning to build up the 2+ years of experience that practically all job descriptions now require. Academic institutions have responded to this trend by implementing experiential and work-integrated courses and co-op streams to respond to the growing demand. During my studies at Glendon, I completed two experiential learning courses: FRAN 2900 (Le français par expérience) as a Teacher’s Assistant at Toronto French School and FRAN 4975 (Professional Work Placement) as a Marketing intern for Explorum. I also studied abroad in France during my third year. I would highly encourage you to consider how you can weave experiential learning into your degree. It's honestly a win-win as you are gaining credits and building your resume at the same time! I am writing this article not to just reiterate all the amazing opportunities Glendon has to offer, but to share an opportunity no one (well, at least none of my friends or professors) seems to be talking about…Riipen. Think government-funded, paid, real-world work experience. Riipen offers project-based learning opportunities for post-secondary students across Canada. I like to think of these opportunities as a “professional” side hustle since you complete them alongside your studies and gain paid experience instead of academic credits. Riipen has a number of different programs you should definitely consider. Since too many options can be overwhelming, I’ll introduce two of them. If you are looking for a short-term project, join the April Cohort of RiipenLabs! In 3 short weeks, you can earn $600 for 30 hours of work without requiring any prior experience. Sounds too good to be true? I thought so too until I was selected as Research Lead on a growth strategy for Roots Funding, a global private equity company. I am not a finance or business student by any means, so I know for a fact I would never have been able to get this role myself. It was an incredible opportunity to work alongside an interdisciplinary team and develop transferable skills, such as critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Since my first experience was such a success, I

applied for a longer-term program, Level Up. This 60 hour, 8-week program allows you to earn $1400. The funding is the cherry on top in this economy, but I honestly believe the experience you gain is worth far more. The best way to learn is by doing. Getting a taste of several industries before graduation allows you to become a more versatile student and hopefully even discover your dream job along the way! I was accepted into the March Level Up Cohort. For this more significant project, students have more freedom. Instead of being automatically matched with a project like RiipenLabs, I had the liberty to select and apply for my top four companies out of 600+. I ended up matching with my top choice, Untangle Money, a fintech designed specifically to help women manage their money. My advice for any students interested in “levelling up” through Riipen’s 8-week Level Up

program or 3-week Labs program is simple: first and foremost, be yourself and be ambitious. Be genuine in the answers on your application. Don’t just copy and paste generic ones from ChatGPT. Your human voice will stand out, and that is what hiring managers want to hear! Nothing is off the table. Don’t tell yourself, “I can’t do this,” just because you lack experience or it isn’t related to your major. That is actually the whole point. This is your chance to gain new experiences, and who knows, it might even change your life. Don’t let self-doubt or limiting beliefs hold you back. Take a chance. Now that you know about this incredible opportunity to gain work experience, why not take five minutes (yes, really, that is all it takes) to apply? Even better, reflect on your experience by sharing it in an article like this one in Pro Tem. It is a great way to document what you have learned and inspire others along the way.
