WELCOME Dear Candidate, Thank you very much for your interest in joining the Board of London’s Air Ambulance Charity.

For over 30 years, London’s Air Ambulance has been at the forefront of saving the lives of those in London severely impacted by trauma.

Working in close collaboration with our service partners, Barts Health NHS Trust and the London Ambulance Service, we provide advanced trauma response and care 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to those living, working and visiting London. We use helicopters during flyable daylight hours and a fleet of rapid response cars at other times.

The last five years have seen transformational growth in all aspects of the Charity, particularly in the enhancement of frontline operations.

We have ambitious plans to improve our service even further, and to ensure we attend and treat all preventable deaths from trauma.

We have an exciting opportunity to appoint two independent medical trustees to the Board, following the retirements of Dr Gareth Davies and Professor David Lockey who stepped down earlier in the summer, after many years of service to the Charity.

At the same time, we are looking for one, possibly two, outstanding individuals to join the Board as non-medical Trustees. We are looking for candidates who will not only bring their own energy, passion and dynamism to the Board, but who will contribute a skill set which diversifies the existing Board, be that through experience in the digital world, cultural and organisational change, fundraising or any other expertise that can extend our professionalism even further.

Today, treating patients before they get to hospital has been transformed into an established medical discipline and our service is seen as a world leader of rapid response care. We have provided support to the capital in its times of greatest need, such as our advanced trauma response to mass casualty incidents.

Figure 2 displays the headline numbers of patients treated by the service in the financial year 2018/19. RAPID RESPONSE Our advanced medical trauma team treats on average five people a day in life-threatening situations.

We attend only the most severely injured people who may not survive the journey to hospital without urgent treatment. We carry out critical care procedures at the scene of an incident that are normally only performed in a hospital emergency department.

We provide: •

A 24/7 advanced medical trauma team, ready to respond 365 days of the year

•

A helicopter between 8am and sunset

•

Rapid response vehicles at all other times

•

An award-winning Physician Response Unit (a doctor and paramedic), 12 hours a day 365 days a year, to treat people with medical emergencies in their homes who might otherwise end up in hospital

We also form part of the London’s emergency response to major incidents in the capital, such as terror attacks, rail crashes and fires, including: the Paddington rail crash, 7/7, the London Bridge and Westminster terror attacks and the Grenfell fire.

More lives can be saved if we start more complex treatments sooner after injury occurs. With the complexity of treatments increasing, more expertise is needed in our team. We recently appointed 11 new consultants to meet this need.

EXCELLENCE IN CARE Making sure we give urgent life-saving treatment to patients, and provide dedicated support to their families, in their greatest time of need is at the heart of everything we do. We founded The Institute of Pre-Hospital Care in 2013 to drive excellence in care standards for treating patients in situ. Through the Institute we train and educate the next generation of specialists.

The Institute developed a Performance Psychology in Medicine Symposium sharing our expertise in human factors with the wider emergency medicine sector. We worked with UK Sport’s elite athletes and coaches to develop high performance training.

RESEARCH AND INNOVATION We continue to use our pioneering spirit to look for new ways to save more lives. We research and develop new innovations in treating severely injured patients before they get to hospital.

We are proud to have a number of firsts to our name, which include:

Ground-breaking roadside surgery only previously carried out in hospital, including open heart surgery

Pioneering a procedure at the roadside used to control catastrophic bleeding in trauma patients called REBOA (Resuscitative Endovascular Balloon Occlusion of the Aorta)

We are determined to search for ways to reduce the time taken to give patients the life-saving treatments they need, providing a knowledge platform for both civilian and military clinical innovations.

Our registrars join us on secondments from all over the world, taking the skills and operating procedures they learn to their own hospitals and pre-hospital care services.

Through research, innovation and educational activities, we have influenced clinical guidelines, governance standards, and the practice of air ambulances in the UK, Europe, the US and Australia.

FINANCES We are in our strongest ever position but we still have further to go to achieve our ambition. We have cÂŁ9 million in unrestricted reserves - equivalent to approximately ten months operating costs - should the worst happen. This position is set to improve over the life of the business plan.

However, our long-term aims require significant cash expenditure, particularly around maintaining and eventually replacing our helicopters over the next five years, as well as funding improvements to patient care and treatments.

Therefore, we have decided to invest in fundraising, particularly over the next two years, to diversify our income streams and to ensure we can meet our target to at least double income over the next five years.

TRUSTEES Location: Central London Board meetings per year: 5-6 per annum plus annual strategy day Time commitment: Approximately one day a month Scheduled Board meetings for 2020 so far: 22 January, 11 March, 13 May and strategy day 5 February Remuneration and expenses: This role is not remunerated. Travel expenses as well as other out of pocket expenses directly incurred as part of official Trustee business will be reimbursed.

KEY DUTIES The principal task of Trustees is to ensure London’s Air Ambulance operates efficiently and effectively to fulfil its charitable objectives and legal responsibilities.

A track record of improving data capture, storage and management or operational systems - particularly experience of this within a healthcare or clinical setting

Experience of leading organisational or cultural change at a senior level

A background within marketing and communications or fundraising/ income generation

Experience, attributes and skills required by all Trustees: •

Ability to build and sustain positive relationships with key stakeholders and colleagues to achieve organisational objectives

The credibility and personal impact to serve as a peer to those already on the Board and contribute to strategic discussions in a collegiate yet robust manner

Non-Medical Trustees

•

Sound, independent judgement, strategic vision and the ability to think creatively

In addition, we are seeking additional trustees with a background in one or more of the following areas;

•

A commitment to fairness and to promoting equality and inclusion

•

A senior clinician or academic with a background in emergency medicine or its allied fields, prominent in their area of expertise and with a track record of leading improvements in or innovating medical practices. The post holder will have strong research experience and will be well networked in an international context and will be willing to leverage these networks for the benefit of London’s Air Ambulance. Some experience in medical research would be an advantage.

Medical Trustee 2 •

A clinical or health management professional who brings a broader understanding of related or allied professional fields such as neuroscience, biomedical science or health systems management. An individual with a fresh-minded approach and an ability to appropriately challenge ways of thinking. This could include experience within a health related area of innovation, such as health technology.
