DIRECTOR OF INCOME
DIRECTOR OF INCOME
Thank you for your interest in the Director of Income Generation role at SPANA.
SPANA – The Society for the Protection of Animals Abroad was founded in 1923 to support working animals across the world. Today, more than 100 years on from the charity’s launch, SPANA works in approximately 22 low-income countries to improve the welfare of working animals, including horses, donkeys, mules, water buffalo, oxen and camels. By supporting the delivery of veterinary services for working animals in need, the training of owners in good animal care and the education of children in animal welfare, we work to transform the lives of working animals. SPANA is widely respected across the countries and communities where we work. In many communities which depend on working animals, SPANA offers the only opportunity for working animal welfare, care and support. We also have partnership agreements with several governments and local authorities, including those of Morocco, Mauritania and Zimbabwe. In 2022, the Mauritanian government recognised our contribution to the country’s local animal welfare by naming a road near our centre in Nouakchott ‘Rue SPANA’, or SPANA Road. In 2023, SPANA marked its centenary, launching our new five-year organisational strategy.
Through pioneering activities and new strategic partnerships, SPANA will radically grow the impact and sustainability of our work. The delivery of our strategy involves scaling our impact while maintaining quality sustainable delivery; demonstrating greater value for money; and using evidence to influence globally – all while improving the resilience and wellbeing of working animals and the people who depend upon them. Our new Director of Income Generation will play a key role in realising our plans for the future, ensuring that our income channels are diversified and, importantly, grown in order to meet the growing needs for working animals.
‘Transforming the lives of working animals: SPANA Strategy 2023-2027’, explains how the charity will develop its work to meet the rising challenges faced by working animals and the communities they so loyally serve.
This role oversees all of SPANA’s new and potential income streams including individual donors, major donors, legacy donors, trust and foundation grant makers, corporate partners, institutional donors and commercial/earned income. Working closely with teams across multiple countries, you will ensure our revenue generation activities resonate with diverse audiences and stakeholders around the world. You will lead a dynamic team and work closely with the senior leaders across SPANA’s global network to align revenue generation activities with our programmes of work.
This is an exciting time to join SPANA, as we pursue our ambitious vision for the future. If you have the skills we are looking for, and would like to be part of a dynamic, supportive and collaborative team that is united in its commitment to transforming the lives of working animals, we would love to hear from you.
Since our foundation in 1923, we have worked across Africa, Asia and Latin America to support the welfare of working animals, including horses, donkeys, mules, oxen and camels. In 2023, we launched ‘Transforming the lives of working animals: SPANA Strategy 2023–27’. Through our strategy, SPANA will make a sustainable and lasting change to working animal welfare across the globe.
Following a century of supporting working animal welfare, SPANA is now at a key juncture in its history. The need for our work has never been greater, and this demand will only increase in the years ahead. The impact of the climate crisis, the increase in poverty levels and instability in many regions will be particularly hard on working animals and the communities who rely on them. Extreme weather patterns, natural hazards and food and water shortages are threatening the lives
of people living in poverty – and, the more vulnerable people are, the harder it is for them to recover from failed harvests, destroyed homes, and health crises –and therefore to provide for their working animal. The World Bank has estimated that, by 2030, the climate crisis could push more than 120 million more people into poverty. Working animals are intrinsically linked to the global shift we’re seeing. We anticipate that the demands on working animals will grow exponentially.
Our strategy outlines how we will develop our work to meet these increasingly difficult global challenges. We will improve the quality of life for working animals at a greater scale than ever before. We will ensure the contribution to working animals across the world is recognised and valued. And we will ensure the world of working animals thrives as part of the nexus of animals, people and the environment.
Historically, SPANA’s focus has been on ensuring the treatment of working animals in need, while seeking longer term changes in animal welfare through the training of owners in animal care and the teaching of children in animal welfare. All of those activities remain the foundation of our work. But as we continue to Treat, Train and Teach, we will also seek to Transform – through innovative new activities and strategic partnerships, we will transform the welfare of working animals, in a world where animals, people and the environment are respected and thrive. Our 2023-2027 strategy involves scaling our impact while maintaining quality delivery; demonstrating greater value for money; and using evidence to influence globally – all while improving the resilience and wellbeing of working animals and the people who depend upon them.
At SPANA, we are committed to fostering an inclusive, diverse, and equitable environment where everyone, regardless of background, identity, or experience, feels valued, respected, and empowered.
We believe that diverse perspectives strengthen our ability to protect and advocate for animal welfare on a global scale.
We strive to create a workplace and community where differences are celebrated, and where opportunities are accessible to all.
Discrimination, bias, and inequality have no place in our mission, and we actively work to ensure our policies, programmes, and partnerships reflect our commitment to fairness and justice.
We recognise that meaningful change requires ongoing learning and action. That’s why we continue to listen, challenge ourselves, and improve our practices to create a more inclusive and representative organisation. Our work for working animals is built on compassion, and that same compassion extends to the people who make our mission possible.
