JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title: Interim Chief Executive Officer

Contract: 12 month fixed term contract (potential to become permanent)

Reports To: Chair and Board of Trustees

Salary: Circa 90,000 FTE

Location: Islington, London. A weekly presence in the office is required and will vary according to the needs of the service.

Hours: 37.5 hours pw (flexible working arrangements would be considered for the right candidate).

Direct reports: Director of Services; Director of Fundraising & External Affairs; Director of Finance & Resources.

Purpose of the Role

• Provide inspirational and inclusive leadership to ensure high quality services are delivered and that staff and the organisation are led effectively and efficiently.

• Act as an ambassador in promoting the value of early intervention and the benefit of Chance UK in delivering excellent outcomes for children.

• Develop and grow Chance UK so we can reach and meet the needs of more children; strengthening and enhancing our evidence base and ensuring a sustainable future.

• Support, lead, develop and direct a passionate team of highly motivated staff and volunteers, building on existing strengths.

Strategy and Leadership:

• Articulate, internally and externally, the vision, mission and values of the organisation, ensuring the strategy evolves in line with business needs and aligns to the stated charitable purpose and mission

• Work with the Board to operationalise, develop and define Chance UK’s recently agreed strategy, communicating the vision to funders and positioning business development and strategic partnership activity in accordance with the strategy.

• Provide excellent leadership to Chance UK, ensuring all staff and volunteers are inspired, motivated, valued and are performing to their full potential

• Work collaboratively with the Senior Leadership Team to ensure they are supported and empowered

• Be responsible for the plan, business plans, budgets and performance targets, based on understanding and reviewing the current model of service delivery with SLT andBoard in light of any new opportunities,

• Develop a set of strategic imperatives – including service delivery; development of services; staff review and development; fundraising, operational excellence, etc

• To work with the organisation on further developing equality, diversity and inclusion to ensure the organisation is representative of the communities it serves

Revenue generation

• Through horizon scanning, relationship building and partnerships working, identify and attract new funds/ diversify income streams, being both entrepreneurial and pragmatic in approach

• Ensure long term sustainability by proactively securing income from a blend of sources, including statutory funders, major donors, trusts and foundations and corporate partnerships

• Ensure strong and positive relationships are maintained with key external stakeholders to ensure that the organisation grows our reputation for excellence and that opportunities are maximised

• Focus on consolidating and growing relationships with existing funders (statutory and voluntary) by ensuring that expectations are met and exceeded;

Service Delivery

• Ensure that Chance UK offers an excellent, safe, personalised and sustainable programme to achieve our mission

• Hold ultimate responsibility for ensuring that all programmes are developed, delivered and marketed in accordance with the needs of children and young people

• Ensure that Chance UK can evidence and report on the impact of its services

Profile and Networking

• Represent the interests of Chance UK externally, developing the charity’s brand and profile and participating in and influencing national debate

• Build profile through relationships with key stakeholders in our communities and networks, including proactive engagement with current and potential funders, other voluntary sector organisations and corporates

• Articulate clearly the value and impact of Chance UK to a diverse range of audiences, partners, collaborators and stakeholders

• Explore ways to use the views/insights of current and former service users/mentors to inform change

Finance

• Ensure that the organisation is financially robust, sustainable and well managed

• Provide comprehensive financial reporting to the Board for Chance UK’s overall financial and organisational health, ensuring that income is maximised and expenditure is controlled in line with budgets

• Oversee the timely preparation of the budget, management accounts, financial reporting and annual accounts

Organisation/Operations

• Build strategic, organisational, operational and governance excellence, ensuring that

• Ensure that Chance UK has in place effective policies and procedures to manage human resources, associates, finance, information, communication, premises and other resources, and that these meet relevant legislative and statutory requirements and agreed quality standards.

• Facilitate a culture where staff continue to feel valued and their wellbeing is fully considered

• Sustain and develop the values-based ethos at the core of all Chance UK’s work, including creating safe and brave spaces and an environment of mentoring for growth

Governance

• Work with the Chair of the Board to ensure the full engagement of Trustees in delivering high standards of governance so that the Board fulfils constitutional and legislative requirements

• Provide appropriate and accurate management information and other guidance to the Board of Trustees to ensure they have a clear and accurate understanding of the health and performance of the organisation so they can make informed decisions

• Monitor and advise on the composition of the Board, its committees and the process of self-assessment and development

• Encourage and promote the involvement of people with lived experience and/or strong understanding of solutions focussed mentoring and support as Board members

Person specification

Knowledge and experience

• Significant strategic leadership experience developing people, services and organisations and translating strategy into operational delivery

• Strong track record of securing growth, both in terms of diverse income streams and reach and of developing propositions to drive strategic growth

• Experience of working at a senior management level and of reporting to a governing board

• Experience of creating equity within communities and amplifying the voice of lived experience, notably within the context of the children and families with whom we work.

• Confident public speaker with experience of promoting an organisation to a wide variety of stakeholders

• Experience of financial planning and budgeting within a mixed income stream environment

Skills and abilities

• Ability to use data to inform decision making and take measured risks

• Strong financial and commercial acumen

• Excellent verbal, presentational, written and digital communication skills

• Ambitious with an ability to spot and maximise opportunities

• Experience of leading significant organisational change or development.
