In the beginning...
The book of Genesis mentions the plants used to extract essential oils but not the oils themselves. For instance, in the story of Joseph, his brothers took away his colorful robe and threw him into a dry hole without water. Later, when Jacob sent his sons to Egypt for food, he asked them to bring myrrh, a fragrant resin obtained from the bark of various small trees, as a gift for the supervisor. Interestingly, the supervisor was Joseph himself, who had risen to power in Egypt.
The use of essential oils in ancient times is of great interest and significance. The Bible references sacred sandalwood as a vessel and how holy anointing oils were offered to Jesus as a way of well-wishing by Roman soldiers. These oils have been used for centuries in religious practices and have gained popularity due to their health benefits.

Frankincense, the monarch of oils, holds a special place in history and religion. A gift from the wise men to infant Jesus, it was used as a major ingredient in sacred incense, as well as for medicinal purposes and as a form of payment. In fact, during the time of Jesus' birth, the value of frankincense oil and myrrh may have exceeded that of gold, which was the third gift.
Today, frankincense remains a precious commodity with its sacred nature and health benefits treasured by many. When mixed with a liquid carrier, it can work wonders, as described in the scriptures. In the Bible, frankincense is extolled for its aroma, with a honey-like scent and aromatic bark. It is mentioned frequently, particularly in relation to incense and burnt offerings.

Let us cherish the gift of frankincense and its significance in history and faith. As the scriptures say in Proverbs 27:9, "Oil and perfume make the heart glad, and the sweetness of a friend comes from his earnest counsel." May the aroma of frankincense bring joy and comfort to all who encounter it.
In addition, the Book of Exodus 30:34-35 describes how frankincense was used to make the holy anointing oil, which was used to consecrate the tabernacle and all its furnishings. Similarly, in the Book of Revelation 5:8, frankincense is used to describe the prayers of the saints before the throne of God
Let us reflect on the powerful symbolism of frankincense in the Bible and how it can deepen our faith. As the Psalmist says in Psalm 141:2, "Let my prayer be counted as incense before you, and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice." May the aroma of frankincense remind us of the power of prayer and the presence of God in our lives.

"I rose to open for my beloved, and my hands dripped with myrrh, my fingers with flowing myrrh, on the handles of the lock." (Song of Solomon 5:5, ESV)
While myrrh oil is not explicitly mentioned in the Bible for its health benefits, there are several references to myrrh and other aromatic substances being used for medicinal purposes. For example, in Proverbs 27:9, it says, "Oil and perfume make the heart glad, and the sweetness of a friend comes from his earnest counsel." Additionally, myrrh was used in ancient times as a natural remedy for a variety of ailments, such as wounds, sore throats, and digestive issues. In Esther 2:12, it says, "Before a young woman's turn came to go in to King Xerxes, she had to complete twelve months of beauty treatments prescribed for the women, six months with oil of myrrh and six with perfumes and cosmetics."
"And they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it."
(Mark 15:23, ESV)
This suggests that myrrh, along with other aromatic substances, was believed to have cosmetic and health benefits. While the Bible does not provide a comprehensive list of myrrh's potential health benefits, it does acknowledge the use of aromatic substances for medicinal purposes, which suggests that myrrh may have been valued for its therapeutic properties even in ancient times.
In ancient times, myrrh was one of many aromatic substances believed to have cosmetic and health benefits. Though the Bible does not provide a detailed account of myrrh's potential therapeutic uses, it acknowledges the medicinal properties of aromatic substances, which suggests that myrrh may have been highly esteemed for its therapeutic benefits. These properties may have been valued for their ability to promote physical well-being and improve overall health.

Cinnamon oil is mentioned several times throughout the Bible for its various benefits. In Exodus 30:23, it is included as a key ingredient in the holy anointing oil. In Proverbs 7:17, Solomon speaks of its enticing fragrance. Moreover, cinnamon oil was also used for medicinal purposes, as it was believed to have antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory properties.
In Ayurvedic medicine, cinnamon oil has been used to treat a wide range of health conditions, including respiratory problems, digestive issues, and menstrual cramps. It has also been found to have potential benefits for blood sugar control, reducing the risk of heart disease, and improving brain function.

Recent research has shown that cinnamon oil may be effective in treating various skin conditions, such as acne, eczema, and psoriasis. It may also have potential as a natural insect repellent due to its strong scent.
Overall, cinnamon oil has been valued for its therapeutic properties for thousands of years and continues to be a popular natural remedy to this day.
"Then the Lord said to Moses, 'Take the following fine spices: 500 shekels of liquid myrrh, half as much (that is, 250 shekels) of fragrant cinnamon, 250 shekels of fragrant calamus, 500 shekels of cassia--all according to the sanctuary shekel--and a hin of olive oil. Make these into a sacred anointing oil, a fragrant blend, the work of a perfumer. It will be the sacred anointing oil.'"Exodus 30:22-25 (NIV) www.properxchange.com

Cassia oil, obtained from the cassia plant, has been used for its numerous health benefits for centuries. In addition to its use in the holy anointing oil mentioned in Exodus 30:24, cassia oil has been used in traditional medicine to help alleviate digestive issues, menstrual cramps and to improve circulation.
In Ezekiel 27:19, cassia is mentioned as a valuable spice, and in Psalm 45:8, its fragrance is likened to the luxurious aroma of the palaces of kings. This oil also has antiviral and antibacterial properties and is often used in aromatherapy to help reduce stress and anxiety.

Cassia oil, when used properly, can be a very beneficial addition to one's health routine. However, it is important to note that, like all essential oils, cassia oil should be used with caution and under the guidance of a healthcare professional.
In Psalm 45:8, the use of cassia is mentioned along with other fragrant spices and oils. The verse says, "All your robes are fragrant with myrrh and aloes and cassia; from palaces adorned with ivory the music of the strings makes you glad." The use of cassia in this verse is a testament to its sweet and rich aroma, which was highly valued in ancient times.
"And of cassia five hundred shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary, and of oil olive an hin."
Exodus 30:24

In the Old Testament, God instructed his people to cleanse themselves and their homes with hyssop. In the book of Leviticus 14:4-7, it is written: “The priest shall order that two live clean birds and some cedar wood, scarlet yarn, and hyssop be brought for the person to be cleansed. Then, the priest shall order that one of the birds be slaughtered over fresh water in a clay pot. He is then to take the live bird along with the cedar wood, the scarlet yarn, and the hyssop, and dip them into the blood of the slaughtered bird over the fresh water. He shall then sprinkle the person to be cleansed seven times with the blood of the slaughtered bird and pronounce them clean.”

Hyssop essential oil has been used for centuries for its medicinal properties. It can be used to support respiratory function, aid digestion, boost the immune system, improve skin health, and promote mental wellness. However, it's important to use essential oils with caution and under the guidance of a trained professional.
"Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow." Psalms 51:7

Hyssop also made an appearance during Jesus' crucifixion, when Roman soldiers offered him a sip of wine vinegar on a handkerchief attached to a stem of hyssop. This is mentioned in the book of John 19:29-30, which states: "A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips. When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit."
Additionally, anointing oils were often blended with hyssop and other fragrant oils, spices, and flowering plants. In the book of Psalms 51:7, it is written: "Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow." The Psalms elaborate on the rituals performed with hyssop oil and mention other essential oils as well.

It's fascinating to learn about the historical significance of spikenard, a precious ointment that was highly valued in ancient times for its medicinal properties. In fact, it was so valuable that it was often used as a form of currency.
Interestingly, spikenard was considered to be the equivalent of lavender oil, which is still widely used today for its calming and soothing effects. In biblical times, spikenard was often applied topically for its therapeutic benefits.
The reference to spikenard anointing in the Bible is found in the Gospel of John, chapter 12, verses 1-8. Here's the scripture:
"Six days before the Passover, Jesus therefore came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. So they gave a dinner for him there. Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those reclining with him at table. Mary therefore took a pound of expensive ointment made from pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (he who was about to betray him), said, “Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?” He said this, not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief, and having charge of the moneybag he used to help himself to what was put into it. Jesus said, “Leave her alone, so that she may keep it for the day of my burial."

It's amazing to think about how a simple ointment made from a rare plant has played such a significant role in history and continues to inspire and uplift people to this day.A Priceless Ointment Nard was not only a pricey perfume in biblical times, but it was also a priceless ointment that was applied topically for medicinal purposes.
Considered Equivalent To Lavender
It's interesting to note that lavender oil could have really been the "spikenard" mentioned in the Bible. Oil of Biblical Importance
The Bible describes how spikenard was applied to Jesus just hours preceding His burial and resurrection in John 12:3.
"Then Mary took about a pint of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus’ feet and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume." John 12:3

Sandalwood, known as "aloes" in the Bible, is one of the oils of happiness, along with frankincense, myrrh, and cedarwood. In John 19:39-40, Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea brought sandalwood and myrrh worth $200,000 in today's economy to bury Jesus.
This sacred wood was also used in beauty treatments and was found in a fragrant garden, where it was mixed with other liquid carriers to enhance other essential oils. Additionally, sandalwood was a popular holy anointing oil, and was detailed as one of Moses' holy anointing oils. It was used to set apart people and objects as sacred, as mentioned in Exodus 30:23-25.

He takes a part of it and warms himself; he kindles a fire and bakes bread. Also he makes a god and worships it; he makes it a carved image, and falls down to it." Isaiah 44:14-15

CALAMUS
Lemongrass has an interesting origin story. According to some theories, the old plant calamus, also known as "sweet cane," may be the origin of lemongrass. Calamus was a common element in the special holy anointing oil used by the temple priests throughout biblical times, as well as in incense and fragrances. In Exodus 30:23, the Lord gives specific instructions to Moses on how to make the holy anointing oil, including the use of "five hundred shekels of liquid myrrh, half as much (that is, 250 shekels) of fragrant cinnamon, 250 shekels of fragrant calamus." Additionally, many other holy anointing oils, such as olive oil, were extensively used with calamus.

Calamus is considered one of the essential healing oils mentioned in the Bible. The therapeutic properties of the oil were used in biblical times and are still used today. In Ezekiel 27:19, calamus is mentioned as one of the products traded by merchants. In Song of Solomon 4:14, the fragrance of calamus is described as one of the sweetsmelling scents of a garden. So, it's not surprising that lemongrass, with its roots in calamus, has a rich and storied history of use in various cultures and traditions.

Children & Infants
If you are considering using essential oils around children, especially infants, it is crucial to exercise caution to avoid potential harm. As children have less developed immune and hepatic systems, as well as thinner skin, they are more susceptible to any potential harm caused by essential oils. Before using essential oils, it is recommended to consult a doctor.
Certain essential oils may be used topically and in aromatherapy beyond the age of two, but only at considerably lower doses than for adults. Typically, an acceptable dilution ratio ranges from 0.5 to 2.5 percent. It is essential to note that essential oils should not be taken internally by infants, children, or adults. Essential oils must always be stored out of harm's way as a safety measure.

How does aromatherapy work?
Aromatherapy works through several mechanisms, including inhalation, absorption through the skin, and interaction with the nervous system. When essential oils are inhaled, they stimulate olfactory receptors in the nose, sending signals to the brain that can affect emotions, mood, and memory. Additionally, essential oils can be absorbed through the skin during massage or topical application, where they may exert localized or systemic effects. Certain essential oils also have bioactive compounds that can influence neurotransmitter activity and physiological processes.
What are the benefits of aromatherapy?
Aromatherapy offers a wide range of benefits, including stress relief, mood enhancement, pain management, improved sleep quality, and support for the immune system. Additionally, specific essential oils may have antibacterial, antifungal, or anti-inflammatory properties, making them useful for treating various health conditions.

Generally, when used appropriately, aromatherapy is considered safe. However, it's essential to be aware of potential risks, such as skin irritation or allergic reactions, especially when using undiluted essential oils. Certain essential oils may also interact with medications or exacerbate certain medical conditions. It's crucial to dilute essential oils properly, adhere to recommended usage guidelines, and consult with a qualified aromatherapist or healthcare provider if you have any concerns.
How do I choose the right essential oils for my needs?
Choosing the right essential oils depends on your specific health goals and concerns. Different essential oils have unique properties and therapeutic effects. A qualified aromatherapist can assess your individual needs and recommend essential oils that align with your objectives, whether it's relaxation, pain relief, immune support, or emotional balance.

How should I use essential oils at home?
Essential oils can be used at home, including diffusion, topical application, inhalation, and addition to baths or skincare products. It's essential to dilute essential oils properly, typically with a carrier oil, and follow recommended usage guidelines to ensure safety and efficacy. Also, proper storage is crucial to maintaining the essential oils' potency and integrity.
Are there any potential interactions with medications?
Yes, some essential oils may interact with medications by enhancing or inhibiting their effects. It's essential to consult with your healthcare provider before using essential oils, especially if you are taking medications or have underlying health conditions. Your healthcare provider can advise you on potential interactions and help ensure essential oils' safe and appropriate use.
How do I know if I'm using essential oils correctly?
Proper usage of essential oils involves following recommended dilution ratios, application methods, and safety precautions. You can learn about correct usage techniques from qualified aromatherapists, reputable sources, or educational materials. Pay attention to any signs of skin irritation, allergic reactions, or adverse effects when using essential oils, and adjust your usage accordingly.
Are there any lifestyle or dietary recommendations to complement aromatherapy?
Aromatherapy is often integrated into a holistic approach to wellness, which may include lifestyle modifications, such as stress management techniques, regular exercise, a balanced diet, and adequate hydration. These lifestyle factors can complement the benefits of aromatherapy and contribute to overall health and well-being.
How can I incorporate aromatherapy into my daily routine?
There are numerous ways to incorporate aromatherapy into your daily routine, such as diffusing essential oils in your home or workplace, adding a few drops of essential oil to your bath, using them in massage or skincare routines, or creating custom blends for personal inhalers or room sprays.
