The incredible office for those who cannot be separated from their canine pets

D La increíble oficina para los que no se pueden separar de sus mascotas caninas l fabricante de golosinas y juguetes para perros Bark ha diseñado su oficina de manera que satisfaga las necesidades de sus principales usuarios finales: los perros. La compañía, conocida por su servicio de suscripción de premios y juguetes para perros, BarkBox, tiene una política muy liberal que permite a los empleados llevar a sus perros al trabajo. Su nueva sede en la ciudad de Nueva York lleva este enfoque al extremo.

El cofundador de Bark, Henrik Werdelin, explica que el espacio fue diseñado de forma específica para acomodar tanto a los animales como a las personas. No se trata simplemente de una oficina con algunos toques relacionados con los perros. En colaboración con la firma de arquitectura MKDA, Werdelin buscaba crear un entorno optimizado para que ambos puedan disfrutar juntos. Esto se materializa en rincones tipo cubículo donde humanos y perros pueden trabajar y descansar juntos, áreas cerradas para los perros

donde pueden moverse libremente y un espacio de cafetería destinado a la interacción social tanto humana como canina.

La oficina también cumple con su función de lugar de trabajo, con espacio para 250 personas que incluye escritorios convencionales, estaciones de trabajo y salas de reuniones, junto con los rincones y espacios cómodos mencionados anteriormente. Sin embargo, la característica más destacada es el parque para perros, que ocupa más de 110 m² de la propiedad en una esquina prominente del espacio total del piso.

The company, known for its dog toy and treat subscription service, BarkBox, has a very liberal policy that allows employees to bring their dogs to work. Its new headquarters in New York City takes this approach to the extreme.

In addition to stacks of dog toys, cabinets filled with treats, leash hooks on desks, and nooks designed for pet lounging, this office has a unique feature: an on-site dog park. The park is equipped with a central climbable plinth, a small tunnel, a ball pit and plenty of seating for dog owners. It’s just one of several

features designed to make the office especially dog-friendly.

Bark co-founder Henrik Werdelin explains that the space was specifically designed to accommodate both animals and people. It’s not just an office with a few dog-related touches. In collaboration with architecture firm MKDA, Werdelin sought to create an optimized environment for both of them to enjoy together.

This is embodied in cubicle-like corners where humans and dogs can work and rest together, enclosed areas for dogs where they can roam freely, and a cafeteria space for both human and canine social interaction.

“Aprendimos mucho de esa experiencia cuando construimos nuestro parque interno para perros”, afirma Werdelin. Una característica clave de su diseño fueron los asientos, una idea propuesta por el director creativo de la empresa, Mikkel Holm, quien anteriormente trabajó en Lego. “Él señaló que los parques infantiles exitosos cuentan con cómodos asientos para los padres, quienes permanecen allí durante mucho tiempo”, comenta Werdelin.

Además, Werdelin menciona que los perros también pasan gran parte del día durmiendo la siesta, por lo que es igual de común ver perros jugando y corriendo alegremente en el parque como dormidos en alguna de las áreas de trabajo. Incluso pueden encontrarse en alguna de las salas de conferencia. Con paredes blancas y un ambiente similar al de una sala de videoconferencias de cualquier oficina moderna, incluso si hubiera un perro presente, no aparecería en la cámara.

Una de las principales preocupaciones en un entorno de trabajo centrado en los perros son los desechos. Werdelin explica que el espacio fue diseñado utilizando materiales que no se dañarían si un perro decide hacer sus necesidades en el lugar. Señalando la cámara de su computadora portátil hacia abajo, muestra los pisos de concreto pulido que se extienden por todo el espacio. “Son pisos que no solo se ven geniales, sino que también son fáciles de limpiar. No todos los pisos necesitan ser de plástico para lograr eso”.

Werdelin comenta que la empresa, al igual que muchas otras, está adaptándose al estilo de trabajo híbrido que surgió a raíz de la pandemia, lo que ha llevado a que haya menos personas en la oficina. Algunos equipos, como los encargados del desarrollo de productos, utilizan más el espacio que otros, como los ingenieros de la empresa. Esta menor ocupación facilita dedicar una parte considerable del espacio a los

perros, e incluso se ha creado una biblioteca temática sobre perros con un área secreta para sentarse detrás de una puerta oculta.

Sin embargo, las diversiones en la oficina no están limitadas sólo a los caninos.

Werdelin comenta que los empleados también disfrutan pasar tiempo en el parque tanto como lo hacen los perros, e incluso utilizan algunas de las áreas de juego, como el pelotero, para su propia diversión.

“Eso, honestamente, es más para los humanos”, añade.

However, this is not the company’s first project. In 2018, Bark opened an outdoor dog park in Nashville, exclusively for affiliate members. The park featured a wide green field, a cafeteria that needed human drinks and dog treats, as well as a covered

picnic area. However, earlier this year, the park closed its doors.

“We learned a lot from that experience when we built our indoor dog park,” Werdelin says. A key feature of his design were the seats, an idea proposed by the company’s creative director, Mikkel Holm, who previously worked at Lego. “He said that successful playgrounds have comfortable seats for parents, who have been there for a long time,” Werdelin says.

In addition, Werdelin mentions that dogs also spend a large part of the day napping, so it is just as common to see dogs playing and running happily in the park as they are asleep in one of the work areas. They may even meet in one of the conference rooms.

With white walls and a video conference room like ambiance of any modern office, even if a dog was present, it wouldn’t show up on camera.

One of the main concerns in a dog-centric work environment is waste. Werdelin explains that the space was designed using materials that would not be damaged if a dog decided to relieve himself in the space. Pointing his laptop camera down, he shows the polished concrete floors that stretch throughout the space. “These are floors that not only look great, but are also easy to clean. Not all floors need to be plastic to do that.”

Werdelin says that the company, like many others, is adjusting to the hybrid work style that has emerged in the wake of the pandemic, which has led to fewer people in the office. Some teams, like product developers, use more space than others, like company engineers. This reduced occupancy makes it easy to dedicate a considerable part of the space to dogs, and a dogthemed library has even been created with a secret seating area behind a hidden door.

Office fun isn’t just limited to canines, though. Werdelin says the employees also enjoy spending time in the park as much as the dogs do, and even use some of the play areas, like the ball pit, for their own amusement. “That, honestly, is more for humans,” he adds.
