The Stanley Post Office was opened in 1937, and is now Hong Kong’s oldest post office still in service in its original building. It has little decoration except for the ornamental window grilles with the ‘GR' (George Rex) insignia on them, and the manual brass stamp dispensers on the wall. After the handover, traditional red British post boxes are very hard to find. If you want to see the only extant red cast-iron post box engraved with King George VI's emblem, head for Stanley Post Office.

Pak Kan Uk (八間屋) is an eight-unit village in Stanley, which are joined together forming a row. They are all one storey brick houses built in the traditional Chinese style with tiled ridge-roofs. They also incorporate the traditional Hakka architectural style with red brick, grey tiles, green window frames and doors.

Stanley Market is one of the must-go places for tourists and locals, it gets particularly busy at weekends. You will find an interesting array of little shops selling silk garments, sportwear, Chinese costume, jewellery and souvenirs. A hard afternoon of shopping is also finished by a good dinner at one of the many restaurants. There are some alfresco seaside dining along the main street of this small fishing village. The food is international, the restaurants are laid-back and the South China Sea views are pleasant.

esigning for children is a lovely challenge. Here a little girls room, she is now 2,5 years old and she loves her little nest. The wallpaper is from a Dutch company called PIP Studio. The stools are old and from China. We shortened the legs creating suitable height for kids, thereafter we painted them in colours matching the wallpaper. The same kind of colour matching was done for the old Chinese bird cages. The cabinet is from IKEA, but we painted it pink contributing to the over all girly feeling in the room. “When I do design of my client’s homes I interview my customer’s to find out who they are and what their wishes and dreams are”, Charlotte Falck says. If your property contains illegal structures don’t take it lightly… What is an illegal structure? Illegal structures have “unfortunately” formed part of our daily lives. A brief stroll on the street by an observant eye could well reveal numerous illegal structures, most commonly including signboards, enclosed balconies, glass panels, supporting structures for airconditioners. These structures not only could endanger the safety of the general public, legal liability could also attach. The Buildings Ordinance, Cap.123 (“BO”) contains no definition of this term. However, s.14(1)(b) BO provides that “…no person shall commence or carry out any building works or street works without having first obtained from the Building Authority …his consent in writing for the commencement of the building works ...” Under s. 2 BO, the term “building works” carries a broad meaning and “includes any kind of building construction, site formation works, ground investigation in the scheduled areas, foundation works, repairs, demolition, alteration, addition and every kind of building operation, and includes drainage works.” Simply speaking, any structural work may fall within the meaning of “building works” and any alteration to it therefore requires the prior approval from the Building Authority. Illegal structures are also commonly known as "unauthorized structures". A property owner seeking to demolish any part of a reinforcement wall, or to replace the external wall with say glass panels will have to seek prior approval from the Building Authority before commencement of the works, or he will be at risk of prosecution.

What are the legal consequences? If an illegal structure is known to the Building Authority, it may issue an order under s.24(1) BO (“Building Order”) requiring the illegal structure to be made good within a specified period of time (so as to end the contravention of the BO). Criminal prosecution may be instituted against any person who, without reasonable excuse, fails to comply with the Building Order. Upon conviction, he could be liable to up to:(a) a fine of $200000 and to imprisonment for 1 year; and (b) a fine of $20000 for each day during which it is proved to the satisfaction of the court that the offence has continued. Although a term of imprisonment for non-compliance with a Building Order is uncommon, there have still been recent cases in which the Court has imposed an imprisonment term against a property owner due to the gravity of the offence e.g. repeated non-compliance. In short, do not take illegal structures lightly. The Court may have no hesitation in imposing a term of imprisonment against a repeated offender, or in our view, an owner of an illegal structure where the Court sees fit to do so by reason of the gravity of the offence. Therefore, if you have any doubt, we suggest that you consult your
