Healthy Holiday Eating Tips:
Bring on the veggies! There are usually several rich and savory items provided at holiday functions such as casseroles, dressing and desserts. Consider bringing a simple side like roasted veggies with herbs and spices or an app of fresh veggies with a low calorie dip to snack on. Savor the flavor! Take your time when eating and remember to chew 20 times per bite. Stop when you feel satisfied—not FULL. Stay on track with typical meal & snack timings. Make sure that you continue with a normal meal and snack routine on holidays. Avoid “saving up” for a big meal, as this will typically make it much harder to make good choices during holiday parties. Get moving! Avoid the dreaded “food coma” by planning activities for the family to do. It can be as simple as a 30 minute walk in the neighborhood, a game of frisbee, tossing a football or a cornhole tournament. Enjoy dessert, but be smart! There are typically many desserts to chose from at holiday parties. As a bariatric patient is important to choose wisely, as many of these could cause “dumping syndrome” and ruin the party for you. If you are inclined to indulge in these treats, make sure that it is a few bites only, or better yet bring a dessert that has no added sugar such as the recipe on the next page!
