Η ομάδα Prom Racing εκπροσωπεί το Εθνικό Μετσόβιο Πολυτεχνείο τα τελευταία 12 χρόνια στο παγκόσμιο φοιτητικό διαγωνισμό Formula Student. Η αγωνιστική σεζόν 2019-2021 είναι πολύ σημαντική για εμάς, καθώς η ομάδα μας θα κατασκευάσει για πρώτη φορά στην ιστορία της ηλεκτρικό αγωνιστικό μονοθέσιο. Our team represents the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) throughout the last 12 years in the global educational competition Formula Student. The racing season 2019-2021 is of utmost importance to us, since it will be the first time that our team takes the leap to manufacture an electrical race car. At this Newsletter, you may find information about Prom Racing and the stages of the manufacturing progress. Moreover, at the last page, you might get to know our supporters/sponsors & our team’s members through multiple interactive interviews.

Τμήμα Ηλεκτρονικών / Department of Electronics

Η υποοµάδα των ηλεκτρονικών, κατά την διάρκεια της καραντίνας, καθώς η φυσική παρουσία δεν ήταν δυνατή, επικεντρώθηκε στην περαιτέρω µελέτη και βελτίωση του σχεδιασµού των κυκλωµάτων του µονοθεσίου καθώς και την υλοποίηση προσοµοιώσεων του tractive system, χρησιµοποιώντας το κατάλληλο λογισµικό. Επιπλέον έγινε η συναρµολόγηση των PCBs. Έπειτα, µετά την επάνοδο της οµάδας σε φυσιολογικούς ρυθµούς, η υποοµάδα της υψηλής τάσης επικεντρώθηκε στην υλοποίηση πειραµάτων µε το µοτέρ του µονοθεσίου, κατά τη διάρκεια των οποίων επιτεύχθηκε η φυσική σύνδεση και ο συγχρονισµός του µε τον αντιστροφέα, την ECU, τους αισθητήρες APPS αλλά και µε το cooling system. Ένα ακόµη καθήκον της υποοµάδας υψηλής τάσης ήταν η προετοιµασία για την κατασκευή και την σύνθεση του κουτιού µπαταριών, µέσω µετρήσεων των κελίων των µπαταριών καθώς και µε την περαιτέρω µελέτη των χαρακτηριστικών τους ώστε να επιτευχθεί ο βέλτιστος δυνατός συνδυασµός. Η υποοµάδα χαµηλής τάσης ασχολήθηκε ιδιαίτερα µε πειράµατα για το shutdown system όπου εξετάστηκε η αλληλουχία βασικών κυκλωµάτων ασφαλείας του µονοθεσίου καθώς και µε την βελτίωση και την διόρθωση στους επιµέρους κώδικες. Επιπρόσθετα στέφθηκε µε επιτυχία η επικοινωνία του συστήµατος τηλεµετρίας µε τα πειράµατα υψηλής τάσης καθώς και η λήψη δεδοµένων µέσω αυτού. Τέλος, τελειοποιήθηκαν, µηχανολογικά και ηλεκτρολογικά, κρίσιµα επιµέρους συστήµατα του µονοθεσίου, όπως το dashboard, το steering wheel και το lv-hv box.

The subteam of electronics, during the period of the quarantine, focused on the further study and improvement of the design of the car circuits as well as the implementation of simulations of the tractive system, using the appropriate software. This was the only way, due to the fact that the physical presence at our workplaces was not possible. In addition, the PCBs were assembled. After this period, the high voltage subteam focused on carrying out experiments with the car engine, during which it was physically connected and synchronized with the inverter, the ECU, the APPS sensors and with the cooling system. Another task of the high voltage subteam was to prepare for the construction and composition of the battery box, by measuring the battery cells as well as by further studying their characteristics in order to achieve the best possible combination.

The low voltage subteam was particularly involved in the shutdown system experiments, where the sequence of basic car security circuits was examined as well as the improvement and correction in the individual codes. In addition, the communication of the telemetry system with the high voltage experiments as well as the reception of data through the former were crowned with success. Finally, many critical individual systems of the car were perfected, in both mechanical and electrical way, such as the dashboard, the steering wheel and the LV- HV box.

Τμήμα Δυναμικής Οχήματος / Department of Vehicle Dynamics

Η υποομάδα της Δυναμικής Οχήματος κατά την διάρκεια των μηνών Ιούνιου – Ιούλιο ασχολήθηκε τόσο με την προετοιμασία για την συμμετοχή της ομάδας στο Formula Student Online Event, όσο και με την έρευνα και ανάπτυξη νέων ιδέων στους τομείς της κινηματικής και των συστημάτων ελέγχων του μονοθεσίου. Συγκεκριμένα, εξετάστηκε η υπάρχουσα διεθνής βιβλιογραφία για να αξιολογηθεί η μέθοδος με την οποία επιλέγουμε τα κινηματικά χαρακτηριστικά της ανάρτησης και να τεθούν οι βάσεις για νέα concept του επομένου μονοθεσίου. Ταυτόχρονα, ξεκίνησε εκτενής έρευνα αλγορίθμων Traction Control , το οποίο είναι πολυ σημαντικό δεδομένου ότι το ηλεκτρικό μονοθέσιο μπορεί να προσφέρει σχεδόν άμεσα μεγάλες τιμές ροπής που δεν μπορούν να αξιοποιηθούν ως ωφέλιμη πρόσφυση. Τμήματα του εξεταζόμενου αλγορίθμου που βασίζεται στη μέθοδο Προσέγγισης Μέγιστης Διαβιβάσιμης Ροπής (Maximum Transmissible Torque Estimation) και Προσέγγισης Μέγιστου Συντελεστή Τριβής (Peak Friction Estimator) δοκιμάστηκαν στο μοντέλο του P20 στο λογισμικό προσομοιώσεων IPG Carmaker. Τέλος, η υποομάδα συνεχίζει την προσπάθεια της να βελτιώνει την ακρίβεια του μοντέλου των ελαστικών χρησιμοποιώντας την Magic Formula με τη βοήθεια του προγράμματος MF Tyre.

The Vehicle Dynamics sub-team, dealt, during the June – July period mainly, with preparing for the team’s participation in the Formula Student Online Event, as well as research and development in the fields of kinematics and Vehicle Control Systems (VCS). Specifically, this sub-team examined the current international bibliography to evaluate the method, according to which the kinematic characteristics of the suspension are selected, and to set the base for the next vehicle’s concept. At the same time, we began extensive research in Traction Control algorithms, which is extremely important, since the electric vehicle can provide large values of torque that cannot be translated into tyre traction, almost immediately.

Parts of the examined algorithm that is based on the Maximum Transmissible Torque Estimation and Peak Friction Estimator Methods were tested with the P20 full car model in the IPG Carmaker software. Finally, the sub-team continues its efforts on improving the accuracy of our tyre model utilizing Pacejka’s Magic Formula with the help of the MF Tyre software.

Τμήμα Μηχανολογικού Σχεδιασμού / Department of Mechanical Design

Η ομάδα του μηχανολογικού σχεδιασμού, έχοντας τελειώσει τη φάση της λεπτομερούς σχεδiασης, εστιάζει στην βοήθεια της κατασκευής του αυτοκινήτου παρέχοντας όλα τα απαραίτητα σχέδια. Τρισδιάστατες εκτυπώσεις, κατασκευαστικά σχέδια τόρνου και για σύνθετα υλικά ελέγχονται λεπτομερώς ώστε να επιτευχθεί η απαιτούμενη ακρίβεια, και να ολοκληρωθεί σωστά το μονοθέσιο. Ύστερα από συνεργασία με τις υποομάδες υψηλής και χαμηλής τάσης, βελτιώθηκαν τα σχέδια του αντιστροφέα τάσης, και του κουτιού μπαταριών, μειώνοντας το συνολικό βάρος διατηρώντας την αξιοπιστία, κάτι το οποίο επιτεύχθηκε με χρήση σύνθετων υλικών. Επιπρόσθετα ολοκληρώθηκαν τα τρισδιάστατα σχέδια της καλωδίωσης του αυτοκινήτου, ώστε να λάβουμε πλήρη εικόνα της διαστασιολόγησης αυτών και των χωροταξικών απαιτήσεων.

The mechanical design team, having completed the phase of the detailed design, focused on helping towards the manufacturing of the racing car, by providing all the necessary designs. 3D printing, lathe design and composite designs are carefully checked to achieve the required accuracy, and to complete the car in the proper and right way. After working with the high and low voltage subteams, the designs of the voltage inverter and the battery box were improved, reducing the overall weight, while maintaining reliability, which was achieved through the use of composite materials. Furthermore, the three-dimensional plans of the car wiring were completed, in order to get a spherical picture of their dimensioning and spatial requirements.

Τμήμα Αεροδυναμικής / Department of Aerodynamics

Η υποομάδα της αεροδυναμικής μετά την οριστικοποίηση του αεροδυναμικού πακέτου ασχολήθηκε με την συμπεριφορά του μονοθεσίου στις δυναμικές συνθήκες που αυτό συναντά στην πίστα. Αυτό μας παρέχει πολύτιμα δεδομένα όχι μόνο για την δικιά μας υποομάδα αλλά και για άλλες υποομάδες, όπως αυτή της Δυναμικής Οχημάτων. Αυτά θα φανούν ιδιαίτερα χρήσιμα κατά την περίοδο του testing, επειδή η ομάδα μας θα μπορέσει να συλλέξει και δεδομένα από την πίστα και να τα συγκρίνει. Μετά δοκιμάσαμε να κάνουμε αλλαγές στις παραμέτρους των προσομοιώσεων μας εξαιτίας των πρόσθετων γεωμετριών στο πακέτο, οι οποίες δεν επέφεραν σημαντικές αλλαγές σε σχέση με τις αρχικές. Αυτή τη περίοδο γίνεται προσπάθεια για την εύρεση του ιδανικού σημείο εκκίνησης του diffuser για τα σχέδια του επόμενου μας μονοθέσιου. Αυτό είναι πολύ σημαντικό για την απόδοση του diffuser, αλλά και όλου του πατώματος του αυτοκινήτου μας. Ταυτόχρονα, γίνεται μελέτη των στηριγμάτων της πίσω πτέρυγας στο σασί εξαιτίας της επίδρασης που μπορεί να έχουν αυτά στην συνολική απόδοση του αυτοκινήτου μας.

The aerodynamics subteam, after the finalization of the aerodynamic package, dealt with the behaviour of the car under dynamic conditions that it encounters while on track. This provides us with valuable data not only for our own subgroup, but also for other ones, such as the Vehicle Dynamics sub-team. Elaborating, these will be especially useful during the testing period, as our team will be able to collect data from the track and compare it. Moreover, we tried to make some changes regarding the parameters of our simulations, due to the additional geometries of the package, which did not bring significant alterations compared to the original ones.

At the moment, an effort is being made to find the ideal starting point for the diffuser when it comes to the next car’s plans. This is fundamental for the performance of the diffuser, but also for the entire floor of our racing car. At the same time, the brackets on the chassis are being studied because of the effect that they can, potentially, have on the overall performance of our car.

Τμήμα Δημοσίων Σχέσεων / Department of Business & Marketing

Η εξάπλωση του κορονοϊού όπως ήταν αναμενόμενο επηρέασε μεγάλο μέρος του χρονοδιαγράμματος της υποομάδας των Δημοσίων Σχέσεων, καθώς ακυρώθηκαν όλες οι εκδηλώσεις που ήταν προγραμματισμένες να συμμετέχουμε (π.χ Athens Science Festival, F1 in Schools), όπως και το καθιερωμένο Roll-Out για τη παρουσίαση του νέου μας αγωνιστικού μονοθέσιου. Ωστόσο, βασικός στόχος της ήταν να διατηρήθει “στενή” επαφή με το κοινό της και για αυτό προχώρησε σε μια σειρά διαφόρων δράσεων. Στις 29 Απριλίου έγινε η επίσημη παρουσίαση της νέας, ανανεωμένης ιστοσελίδας της Prom Racing μέσω των επίσημων λογαριασμών στις πλατφόρμες κοινωνικής δικτύωσης. Η νέα ιστοσελίδα βελτιώθηκε γραφιστικά, προστέθηκε νέο υλικό και έγινε πιο εύκολη στη πλοήγηση, έτσι όλοι οι χρήστες να μπορούν να μάθουν για το Formula Student και τα νέα της ομάδας μέσα σε ένα εύχρηστο περιβάλλον. Ευχαριστούμε θερμά το δημοσιογράφο, Μιχάλη Σαλούρο, για τη διοργάνωση της δράσης αυτής. Ακόμα, στο μέσα κοινωνικής δικτύωσης προωθήθηκε φωτογραφικό υλικό από τη περσινή αγωνιστική χρονιά, σχεδιάστηκαν διάφορες “προκλήσεις” για τους ακόλουθούς μας, όπως για παράδειγμα σύντομα τεστ γνώσεων και κοινοποιήθηκαν οι πιο αστείες στιγμές από τα γυρίσματα της σειράς “Meet The Team”. Μετά το τέλος της καραντίνας, οργανώθηκαν και τα γυρίσματα για το μεγάλο ντοκιμαντέρ για την ομάδα μας από την ΕΡΤ. Το επεισόδιο με τίτλο “Με ταχύτητα φωτός” προβλήθηκε στις 25 Ιουνίου στην ΕΡΤ 2. Ευχαριστούμε πολύ τον σκηνοθέτη Αλέξανδρο Κωστόπουλο και όλο το επιτελείο της δημόσιας τηλεόρασης για την άριστη συνεργασία και το εντυπωσιακό αποτέλεσμα. Τέλος, η Υποομάδα του Επιχειρηματικού Σχεδίου (Business Plan) προχώρησε στην εξέλιξη της επιχειρηματικής της ιδέας, με την οποία και συμμετέχει στο Formula Student Online Event.

The covid-19 outbreak affected, as it was expected, a part of the schedule of the Public Relations sub-team, since all the events that we were about to participate were canceled (e.g. Athens Science Festival, F1 in Schools), including the established Roll-Out for the official presentation of our new racing car. However, our main goal was to maintain “close” contact with our audience and proceeded to a series of various actions.

On April 29, the official presentation of the renewed website of Prom Racing took place, via the official accounts on the social media platforms. The new website has been improved graphically, new material has been added and it has become easier to navigate, so that all users may learn more about Formula Student and team’s news in an easy-to-use environment. We were also a part of a tribute, held by our communication sponsor, 4Troxoi, along with all the Greek Formula Student Τeams, in order to get the public informed about the progress of each team during the quarantine period. We would like to thank warmly the journalist, Michalis Salouros, for organizing this action. Also, some photographs from last year’s competition were uploaded on our social media, various “challenges”, such as short knowledge quizzes, were designed to feast our followers’ eyes and the funniest moments from the shooting of the series “Meet The Team” were shown. After the completion of the quarantine, the shooting for the documentary about our team by ERT was organized. The episode, called “With the speed of light”, was broadcast on June 25 on the ERT2 channel. We warmly thank the director Alexandros Κostopoulos and the entire staff of the public television for our excellent cooperation and the impressive result. Finally, the Business Plan sub-team proceeded to the development of its business idea, with which it is to take part in the Formula Student Online Event.

Νέα & Συνεντεύξεις / News & Inteviews

Η ομάδα Prom Racing του Εθνικού Μετσόβιου Πολυτεχνείου, κάτω υπό κανονικές συνθήκες τέτοια εποχή θα βρισκόταν στη πίστα για δοκιμές εξέλιξης και θα προετοιμαζόταν πυρετωδώς για τη συμμετοχή της στο Formula Student East (Ουγγαρία) και Formula Student Germany (Γερμανία) τον Αύγουστο και μάλιστα για πρώτη φορά στην ιστορία της με ηλεκτρικό αγωνιστικό μονοθέσιο. Όμως, η παγκόσμια εξάπλωση του κορονοϊού έθεσε τα σχέδια και τους στόχους της ομάδας σε αναμονή και σε αναγκαία αναπροσαρμογή του ετήσιου χρονοδιαγράμματος. Ωστόσο, όπως είχε ανακοινωθεί ήδη από τη περίοδο της καραντίνας, η Prom Racing αποφάσισε να πάρει μέρος στο Formula Student Online Event. Στο πρώτο διαδικτυακό αυτό διαγωνισμό, οι ομάδες θα αξιολογήθηκαν για το μηχανολογικόηλεκτρικό σχεδιασμό των αγωνιστικών τους μονοθεσίων και για την επιχειρηματική τους ιδέα. Η ομάδα κατέλαβε την 6η θέση στο Business Plan, την 8η θέση στα Concept Design Challenge, την 11η θέση στο Engineering Design Event. Την ίδια στιγμή, η ομάδα του ΕΜΠ έχει επιστρέψει, με την απαιτούμενη πάντα προσοχή, στους χώρους εργασίας της και συνεχίζει εντατικά τη κατασκευή και τα απαιτούμενα πειράματα, με στόχο το ηλεκτρικό μονοθέσιο να τρέξει για πρώτη φορά στη πίστα τον ερχόμενο Νοέμβριο.

The Prom Racing team of the National Technical University of Athens, under normal circumstances at such a time would be on the track for development tests and would be preparing feverishly for its participation in the Formula Student East (Hungary) and in the Formula Student Germany (Germany) in August and for the first time in its history with an electric racing car. At the same time, the NTUA team has returned, with the always required attention, in its workplaces and continues the intensive construction and the required experiments, with the aim of the electric car to run on the track for the first time in next November.
