NEWS ΕΙΣΑΓΩΓΗ Η Prom Racing Team ξεκίνησε δυναμικά την προετοιμασία της για την επόμενη αγωνιστική χρονιά, μετά από την μεγάλη επιτυχία της στο Formula Student Austria 2017. Στο διάστημα που πέρασε, ανακοινώθηκε μια νέα μεγάλη συνεργασία με την KTM Southeast Europe. Η KTM είναι η μεγαλύτερη ευρωπαϊκή εταιρεία κατασκευής μοτοσυκλετών, ιδιαίτερα γνωστή για τα υψηλής ποιότητας “Ready to Race” μοντέλα της είτε για πίστα είτε για χώμα. Με πάνω από 220 Παγκόσμια Πρωταθλήματα, η τελευταία τεχνολογία, ο καινοτομικός σχεδιασμός και οι υψηλές επιδόσεις των μοτοσυκλετών της είναι αναμφισβήτητα.

INTRODUCTION Prom Racing Team has dynamically started its preparation for the following racing season, after its huge success in the 2017 Formula Student Austria competition. During the past two months, a brand-new collaboration with KTM Southeast Europe was established. KTM is a very well-known European motorcycle manufacturer, especially known for its “Ready to Race” models for track and off-road. Counting more than 220 World Championships, the latest technology, the innovative design and high performance of its motorcycles is indisputable.

ΗΛΕΚΤΡΟΝΙΚΩΝ ELECTRONICS

Από τον περασμένο μήνα, η ομάδα των Ηλεκτρονικών και Ηλεκτρικών εργάζεται συνεχώς για να εκκινήσει τον νέο μας κινητήρα KTM 500. Η βαθμονόμηση των αισθητήρων και η ομαλή λειτουργία των ηλεκτρικών συστημάτων του νέου κινητήρα είναι το μείζον ζήτημα, με αποκορύφωμα την επιτυχή εκκίνηση και λειτουργία του. Παράλληλα, αυτόν τον μήνα τελείωσε το Recruitment και τα νέα μέλη έχουν αρχίσει ήδη να μπαίνουν στο κλίμα, να εντάσσονται στον ταχύρρυθμο κόσμο του FSAE και εκπαιδεύονται ανάλογα, για να φέρουν εις πέρας τις απαιτητικές εργασίες που επιτάσσει ο διαγωνισμός.

Last month, Electronics and Electrical team, has been working tirelessly in order to give life to our new KTM 500 Engine. The sensor calibration and adequate operation of the electrical subsystems of the engine is vital and the peak of our efforts will be the successful ignition and operation of it.

Meanwhile, this month brought us new members to work with, and orderly with the FSAE spirit the new members are getting in touch with the fast-paced world of Formula Student, and learning valuable skills to assist them in their journey.

ΑΕΡΟΔΥΝΑΜΙΚΉΣ AERODYNAMICS

Η ομάδα της αεροδυναμικής ξεκίνησε τις αναλύσεις του νέου αεροδυναμικού πακέτου λαμβάνοντας υπόψη τους νέους κανονισμούς, τις νέες δυνατότητες αλλά και περιορισμούς που προέκυψαν από τις αποφάσεις των ομάδων του κινητήρα, του σασί και της δυναμικής οχήματος. Ταυτόχρονα ξεκίνησε η προετοιμασία του εξοπλισμού για τα πειράματα που θα ακολουθήσουν τον επόμενο μήνα στην αεροδυναμική σήραγγα του Πολυτεχνείου.

The Aerodynamics Department started analyzing the new aerodynamic package of this year, taking into consideration the new rules, new possibilities, as well as the constraints that came up, due to the decisions of the engine, chassis and vehicle dynamics departments of the team. At the same time, the preparation of the test rigs started in order to be ready for the tests that will take place in the wind tunnel of our university.

ΚΙΝΗΤΗΡΑ POWERTRAIN

Για το project ‘P18’, η ομάδα Κινητήρα και Μετάδοσης προβαίνει σε ένα μεγάλο και κρίσιμο βήμα για τις επιδόσεις του μονοθεσίου. Συγκεκριμένα, η ομάδα αποφάσισε να μεταβεί σε ελαφρύτερο μονοκύλινδρο κινητήρα, τον περίφημο 500EXC της KTM. Έτσι, τους περασμένους δύο μήνες πραγματοποιήθηκαν εντατικές μελέτες και προσομοιώσεις, οι οποίες είναι απαραίτητες για την ενσωμάτωση και την βέλτιστη απόδοση του κινητήρα του νέου μας μονοθεσίου. Αυτές περιλαμβάνουν ένα ευρύ πεδίο εφαρμογών, από σχεδίαση και μελέτη της εισαγωγής αέρα του κινητήρα, μέχρι ανάλυση δονήσεων για την αντοχή των βάσεων του στο σασί.

For the ‘P18’ project, the Engine and Drivetrain Department of our team makes a big and crucial step for the performance of our car. More specifically, the team has decided to change to a lighter single cylinder engine, the well known KTM 500EXC. Therefore, extensive studies and simulations have taken place over the previous two months, necessary for the embodiment and optimal performance of the engine of our new car. Those include a vast field of applications, from the design of the engine’s air intake, up to vibration analysis for the structural integrity of engine mounts to the chassis.

COMPOSITE DESIGN Τα σχέδια για την κατασκευή του επόμενου μονοθεσίου μας συνεχίζονται ανελλιπώς και η επίτευξη χαμηλού βάρους είναι ένας από τους βασικούς μας στόχους. Η ομάδα μας προκειμένου να καταφέρει να δημιουργήσει ένα ελαφρύ μονοθέσιο χρησιμοποιεί σύνθετα υλικά σε όλο και περισσότερα μέρη και κομμάτια. Ένα από τα μέρη αυτά είναι και το σύστημα απόσβεσης ενέργειας το οποίο προορίζεται να είναι από κυψέλες αλουμινίου. Παράλληλα προκειμένου να κατασκευάσουμε ένα ελαφρύτερο μονοθέσιο, η ομάδα μας θα ακολουθήσει διαφορετική μέθοδο κατασκευής για το αεροδυναμικό πακέτο, η οποία πέρα από το χαμηλότερο βάρος θα εξασφαλίζει και πιο ακριβή κατασκευή.

The designs for our new racing car has been carrying out and the low weight is one of our basic goals. In order to achieve this, our team makes use of composite materials in more and more parts of its racing car. One of these parts, is the new impact attenuator which will be made from honeycomb. On the same time, aiming to construct the lightest possible racing car, we will implement a new and more accurate manufacturing method for our carbon fiber aerodynamic package. ΤΜΗΜΑ/ DEPARTMENT

ΜΗΧΑΝΟΛΟΓΙΚΟΥ ΣΧΕΔΙΑΣΜΟΥ MECHANICAL DESIGN

Η υποομάδα Σασί και Μηχανολογικού Σχεδιασμού δούλεψε σε έντονους ρυθμούς για να ολοκληρώσει το conceptual design του P18, πάντα σε πλήρη και διαρκή συνεργασία με τις υπόλοιπες υποομάδες, αφού άλλωστε αποτελεί τον συνδετικό κρίκο. Μέσω λοιπόν των κατάλληλων προσομοιώσεων και μελετών, βρέθηκε ο ιδανικός συμβιβασμός ανάμεσα στην χωροταξία και το performance gain κάθε υποσυστήματος του αυτοκινήτου. Η διαδικασία στέφθηκε από επιτυχία, παρά τον μεγάλο βαθμό δυσκολίας της λόγω της μετάβασης σε καινούργιο κινητήρα και νέο τύπο σασί. Πλέον είμαστε έτοιμοι να προχωρήσουμε στην επόμενη φάση της διαδικασίας, το detailed design, που είναι αναγκαίο πριν ξεκινήσει η κατασκευή του μονοθεσίου.

The Chassis and Mechanical Design Department has been working “full time” to finish the conceptual design of P18, in cooperation with the rest of the departments of the team. Thanks to the simulations and studies, we found the ideal compromise between the placement and the performance gain of every system of the car. The process was successful, even though the goal was set high by changing the engine and the chassis type of the car. We are now ready to proceed to the Detailed Design of the car, before we start the manufacturing process.

BUSINESS & MARKETING BUSINESS & ΜΑRKETING Οι μήνες που πέρασαν ήταν εξαιρετικά απαιτητικοί για την υποομάδα του Business & Marketing. Η Prom Racing συμμετείχε σε κορυφαία events όπως το Motor Festival, το PICK Patras, η Βραδιά Ερευνητή ΕΜΠ, η εκδήλωση εορτασμού των 130 χρόνων της Σχολής Μηχανολόγων Μηχανικών και των 180 χρόνων του Εθνικού Μετσόβιου Πολυτεχνείου. Μέσα από αυτές προβλήθηκε τόσο η ομάδα, όσο και τα εξαιρετικά αποτελέσματα που πετύχαμε στον διαγωνισμό της Αυστρίας. Παράλληλα, ανακοινώθηκαν νέες συνεργασίες όπως αυτή με την ΕΤΑΝΑΠ, την KTM Southeast Europe, την Καζαντζίδης Ανταλλακτικά και την KS Tools. Τέλος, το Business Plan της ομάδας μας για το Bosch Formula Student Sponsorship Contest εγκρίθηκε και προκριθήκαμε στην τελική φάση των παρουσιάσεων.

The past few months were full of work for the Business & Marketing Department. Prom Racing participated in some of the best Greek motorsport and educational events, such as Motor Festival, PICK Patras, NTUA Researcher’s Night, 130 years of NTUA Mechanical Engineering School Celebration and 180 years of NTUA celebration. Those events helped us promote both our team and our success in the 2017 Formula Student Austria.

On the same time, many new collaborations were announced and we would like to thank ETANAP, KTM Southeast Europe, Kazantzidis Parts and KS Tools. Lastly, our team’s Business Plan was approved and we were qualified for the final phase of Bosch Formula Student Sponsorship Contest.
