BLACKPOOL 3 PRIDE 2010 Have a safe and enjoyable Pride 2010 From all Committee members By Paul Skelton (Chairman of Blackpool Pride)

BEHIND

THE

SCENE

Months of planning and a string of meetings with various agencies are needed to organise the event. The hard working and enthusiastic committee gel together to make sure Blackpool Pride is a successful as humanly possible. This year the Pride site will be on the ground where the Old Flying Handbag and Flamingo was. extending to the old indoor bowling centre. We would like to thank eveyone who has been involved with organising the weekend this year and includes Lancashire Police, Blackpool Council, all the venue owners, numerous hotels and guest houses, local businesses and all other agencies and volunteers who will be working hard over the weekend . There are still plenty of things to do and paperwork to get in order but it is going to be an event that is not to be missed.

ALL THIS COSTS MONEY

All the perfect planning is only ever possible to come to fruition if there is money to pay for it all. Fundraising for Pride is always top of the agenda and the bigger and better it gets the more money is needed to fund it. This year it is estimated that £40,000 will be needed to stage the event. From planning road closures to getting various licenses with all other expenses in between including paying for artists to perform and many other costs that are needed.

What does £8 buy you? This year entrance to the event will cost £8 for over 18’s and a Junior wrist band for 14-17 year olds at £5. You must be over 16 though to enter the event on your own. These can be purchased from selected venues, BAGS member Hotels or online at: www.prideblackpool.com Bearing in mind rising costs and more money to stage a bigger and better event, these prices represent excellent value for money when you consider that else you can buy for £8.

2 1/2 pints of lager 2 large cheesesburgers Taxi ride up the Golden Mile

These things are short lasting but a whole weekend at Blackpool Pride is something to remember for a long time after. We continue to collect donations over the weekend and you will see our army of volunteers eagerly waiting for what ever you can afford . We would like everyone who has donated time and money for Blackpool Pride 2010.

MAIN Hi folks.....

STAGE 2010

Lucie Jones is the teenage singer from Pentrych in Wales who amazed all the judges on her X-factor audition after singing a fantastic version of Whitney Houston’s I Will Always Love You. She managed to sail through the first rounds of the competition, was put into the live shows by her mentor, Danni Minogue, and we fully expected her to go all the way to the finals until she was beaten in the 5th week by Jedward following a deadlock. She will top the bill at this year’s Pride along with many other acts. A few favourites make a return from the likes of The Cheeky Girls who starred at the first Blackpool Pride, up and coming boyband Frixion with the local connection of band member Johnny Wright. Kelly Wilde and Hannah Jones make a return and a blast from the past with Tight Fit. Some other new faces to pride include Sabrina Washington who is a British singer-songwriter and dancer who rose to fame as the lead singer of the UK girl band, Mis-Teeq, the group achieved a number of top 10 hits in the UK.

A group of Girls from Preston calling themselves P5 will be performing along with “3 Lads from Liverpool” who appeared in last year’s”Queer As Talent” Competition. Carol Jiani who has many hits since the early 80’s will be a name to watch out for. Jaymi who appeared in a guest spot at Pride last year makesa return to his own spot on stage, and what a year he has had in his profession. Plenty of local acts will support the main artists and Pride thank Neil Grant of Michael James Entertainments for supplying these acts once again. Local talent features prominent this year on Main Stage. Michelle and Emma “Be Our guest” will feature dancing alongside Joanna Shorrock. A special guest will also appear this year as the winner of pride Factor 2010. Part of the prize is to perform on the main stage. There is going to be plenty of action this year, and even if the weather isn’t kind, as a special touch an open sided marquee will be in front of main stage so no excuses not to be part of the Main Stage buzz!

THE

PARADE 2010 The Parade for 2010 will take

place on Saturday 15th May. The many floats and groups will assemble at St Chad’s Headland and will make their way along the promenade to a glorious reception of noise and flags flying, all the way to Metropole Hotel next to the North Pier. This year the parade will disperse a bit further along at Cocker Square. This year promises more colour with a wide range of people taking part and as usual the glamorously decorated floats with representatives from venues, hotels and other groups. Having the parade back on the Saturday this year will get people in a festival mood before the main event. The parade will start at 11.30am and finish at Cocker Square around 12.30pm. Get down to the promenade early to choose your place to watch the event.

16 A gay community with pride... There are few places in the UK that rival the

Blackpool gay scene and the seaside town can boast a range of quality bars and a stylish super club offering locals and tourists alike a great night out with good atmosphere and top entertainment. Obviously people don’t just come to Blackpool just for the scene as being a busy seaside resort it has many attractions including the famous Tower and ballroom as well at theatres and the famous Pleasure Beach. With it’s Three piers it sits nicely on the West Coast of England making it within easy reach of all travel networks. When Basil Newby opened The Flamingo back in 1980 he never thought in his wildest dreams that the scene would grow to what it is today. Back then apart from The Flamingo there was only one other gay bar namely Lucy’s. Since then it has grown, but not just the venues but the many hotels and guesthouses as well giving people a great opportunity to come to Blackpool to stay in the comfort of gay owned and run accommodation.

Basil Newby’s In The Pink Leisure has seven venues. These range from the burlesque shows at the world famous Funny Girls to the massive super club The Flamingo which has multi levels offering a brilliant atmosphere with great musical entertainment. In between are the many bars offering a mix of entertainment and drinks promotions throughout the week. Funny Girls is an experience not to miss In between the acts the lovely DJ Zoe will keep you gripped with excitement with her great music and sharp tongued banter.

Boot Camp which is a new venue for ITP opens on 30th April offering a men only establishment where free membership is offered as long as nominated by another member. The venue will open Thursday to Sunday where Thursdays will be open as mixed. The venue will be very popular with the men at pride 2010. Round the corner you will find The Flamingo offering you a full programme of enetertainment and good music. This massive multi million pound club is a state of the art venue with stunning lighting and visuals. The Flying Handbag adjacent to The Flamingo on the top of Queen Street will be in full swing with DJ Carmen the resident DJ keeping the momentum going with the interactive entertainment and top tunes. With an outside seating area and roof garden it’s going to be very popular weather permitted. Next door to The Flying Handbag you will find Kaos Bar where Greg and Bunty will be making you all feel very welcome with an array of activities. Across the road on Talbot Road you will find the very popular Mardi Gras which is independently owned, with Stella Artois entertaining you with her vocal catalogue of songs and of course her sharp tongue will keep you amused all day and night. With top guest vocalists and male strippers it gets very busy. DJ’s Ginger and Keiron keep the music going all night long Mardi Gras never fails to appeal to the masses and this year they celebrate their 11th Anniversary. Just down from Mardi Gras on Talbot Road you will find Taboo which has just found a new level of popularity with Jamie AKA Bonnie La Blue taking post of assisiant manager alongside their Unit Manager Martin. Martin and Jamie warmly welcome you while the DJ’s keep you entertained. Friday and Saturday nights you will be entertained by the lovely bubbly Lee Star who never fails to make you smile. A great night out for everyone. Drinks promotions will also tempt you to drop in and save while being entertained.

18

Down the road a little and round the corner onto Abingdon Street you will find Time Out which is a very gay friendly haunt for locals and tourists. DJ Miles bringing you a first class collection of tunes Plenty going on including Karaoke. Good priced drinks and a feeling of being part of it all is what makes this bar shine. Back on to Queen street you will find the last of ITP Leisure’s venues in the form of Roxy’s and in fact the name of the star hostess Miss Roxy Hart who is one of the best in the business to keep you entertained. Through the week they have great drinks promos and a varied entertainment programme with either Roxy’Hart , Pudsletta Horrormoan, Brandy Babycham or DJ Matty entertaining you and not forgetting Rita International, Cybil DuVuax and on occasion Miss Scorpio..This bar is truly gay friendly. Last but not least there are other bars in the area offering a gay friendly welcome. Firstly Churchill’s on Topping Street with a traditional pub feel and Margaret and John always make you feel welcome. They have Karaoke and guest artists appearing frequently. Cruz bar which is right opposite Funny Girls has it’s own brand of entertainment with theme nights and good music. Popular in the daytime. Ian, Steff and all Staff make you very welcome. They have a new function area upstairs proving popular.

Now Betty Legs Diamond has her own venue along with business partner Matthew on Clifton Street 2 minutes away from Talbot Road. The Green Parrot offers great entertainment and drinks promos. The new show is on nightly except Mondays and Tuesdays. Good atmosphere, great shows and also has a VIP seating area. Others to check out are Stuffed Olives a new classy new wine Bar from the owners of Cruz Bar. this is a place where you can relax without all the noise is lovely ambience. It also has an outside paved area. This is situated on Dickson Road along from Cruz Bar. Another new venue is Diamant which is situated on Church Street opposite the Syndicate. A classy stylish Champagne and Cocktail venue that has a grand piano. A refreshing change for a lovely night out in style. There is something for everyone’s tastes in Blackpool and after you leave you will be talking about your experiences for weeks and it won’t be long until you make a return visit. Whatever you do over the weekend remember to respect the neighbourhood and above all have a safe and enjoyable Blackpool Pride 2010.

SAFETY TIPS

Stay in well-lit and busy areas Look and act confident Remember: if you are wearing earphones whilst walking about you may not hear people or traffic approach you. If someone tries to take anything from you – let them - property can be replaced, you cannot!! If cruising at the event be aware of your surroundings and consider your actions – Are YOU making yourself a potential target. Think about what you drink – A DRUNK VICTIM is an EASY VICTIM. Do not leave drinks unattended – think drink spiking. Do not “Flash the Cash” – only carry what you need with you. Keep your belongings safe – Do not leave them lying around especially mobiles & MP3’s etc. Try not to be conspicuous with your property – better still, if not needed leave it in a secure place at your accommodation. Separate your bank cards and cheque books. If you are unfamiliar with the area DO NOT wander off alone – stay with a friend or partner

Working together to make things better. Sgt Steve Hodgkins Community Safety
