ne programmation Ciné-spectacle, c’est en quelque sorte l’équivalent d’une saison sportive qui ne serait composée que de matchs des étoiles. Une programmation des programmations. Une saison idéale.

De semaine en semaine, les plus inévitables productions issues des plus incontournables institutions en arts vivants se succèdent à l’écran. Une affiche de rêve qu’aucune ville au monde, pas même Berlin ni Florence, ne pourrait s’offrir. Aucune… sauf la vôtre!

Un défilement pareil de créateurs vedettes en un seul lieu pourrait sembler tenir du fantasme, et pourtant... Tôt en saison, Àlex Ollé et la prestigieuse Fura dels Baus proposent au Teatro Real de Madrid une adaptation de l’opéra Le Vaisseau fantôme fort atypique, dans un décor si démesuré que les plans rapprochés créeront l’impression d’être filmés en studio. Au printemps, nul autre que Thomas Ostermeier débarque à la Comédie-Française et devrait faire de La Nuit des rois un chef-d’œuvre anticonformiste. Pour les amateurs de danse, le Royal Ballet proposera en fin de programmation le fruit d’une première collaboration vivement attendue avec l’adulé chorégraphe Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui; une soirée complétée par des œuvres majeures de deux autres créateurs de renom : Christopher Wheeldon et Crystal Pite. Et vous assisterez à tout cela dans le confort des sièges de votre cinéma favori, tous bien placés, tous au parterre!

Une telle programmation permet aussi d’écrémer le meilleur des grandes tendances artistiques. Alors que les nouvelles semblent plus que jamais inspirer des relectures politiques incisives, on marquera le calendrier pour le Britannicus d’une figure de proue du théâtre contemporain, Stéphane Braunschweig, à la Comédie-Française.

Les passionnés d’art lyrique encercleront quant à eux les dates de représentation des Huguenots, de Simon Boccanegra et de Lady Macbeth de Mtsensk, tous trois présentés à l’Opéra Bastille, trois œuvres dont les propos toujours d’actualité sur le fanatisme, le pouvoir, l’humanisme et le féminisme trouveront écho dans leur adaptation contemporaine.

Ciné-spectacle program is sort of like a sport season made up of nothing but all-star games. It’s the program of all programs. A perfect season. Week after week, the most inescapable productions created by the most indispensable institutions in the performing arts follow one another on the screen. A dream schedule that no other city in the world, not even Berlin or Florence, could ever achieve. None… except yours!

Such a parade of star creators in a single place may sound like a fantasy, yet... Early in the season, Àlex Ollé and the prestigious Fura dels Baus present at the Teatro Real in Madrid a very atypical adaptation of the opera The Flying Dutchman, in such a supersized set that the close-ups will create the impression they were filmed in a studio. In spring, none other than Thomas Ostermeier arrives at the Comédie-Française and should make of Twelfth Night a maverick masterpiece. For dance fans, the Royal Ballet will close the program with the fruit of an eagerly awaited first collaboration with highly-praised choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui. The evening is to be completed by major works of two other renowned creators: Christopher Wheeldon and Crystal Pite. And you will attend all of this in the comfort of your favourite cinema’s seats, all great tickets, all parterre seating!

Such a program lets you sample the very best of the great artistic trends. At a time when the headlines seem more than ever to inspire incisive political interpretations, mark the calendar for a version of Britannicus by a figurehead of contemporary theater, Stéphane Braunschweig, at the Comédie-Française.

Lyrical art aficionados can circle the dates for Les Huguenots, Simon Boccanegra and Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, all three presented at the Opéra Bastille, all three works whose still-current topics – fanaticism, power, humanism and feminism – are echoed in their contemporary adaptation.

Synopsis : Véritable tissu d’intrigues entre professionnels de la politique où se mélangent histoires intimes, amoureuses et familiales, cette tragédie est le récit d’une prise de pouvoir et la métamorphose d’un homme, Néron, en tyran…

Présentation : Avec cette pièce de Racine, maître de la tragédie classique, Stéphane Braunschweig revisite le passé à l’aune du présent : regard affûté qui renouvelle la lecture des textes pour nous les faire réentendre, respect absolu des mots et de l’auteur, vision de l’espace où se déploie le verbe.

Synopsis: A web of intrigue between political figures where personal stories, love interests and family relationships intertwine, this tragedy is the tale of how Nero took power and then turned into a tyrant…

Presentation: With the play by Racine, master of classical tragedy, Stéphane Braunschweig revisits the past against the backdrop of the present: a honed eye reviews the reading of the texts so that we may hear them anew, absolute respect of the words and the author, vision of the environment where the word is deployed.

Cyrano est affligé d’un nez proéminent, mais doué pour les mots grâce auxquels il aide le beau Christian à conquérir Roxane. Également amoureux de la jeune fille, il choisit de ne pas lui révéler que chaque parole de Christian sort de son propre cœur. « Quand, acteurs de la Troupe, nous montons des pièces, nous avons inconsciemment le désir de montrer notre théâtre, tout ce qui nous le fait aimer et y rester. » C’est dans cet esprit que Denis Podalydès s’est emparé du plateau de la salle Richelieu. Opéra bouffe, tragédie, drame romantique, poésie symboliste, farce… tous les genres sont convoqués pour faire vibrer la partition de ce texte emblématique du répertoire français!

LUCREZIA BORGIA

Criminelle, adultère, incestueuse, Lucrèce Borgia veut s’arracher au mal qui est sa condition, se faire reconnaître et aimer de Gennaro, l’enfant qu’elle a eu avec son frère. Lors d’un bal à Venise, Gennaro courtise une belle masquée avant de découvrir avec horreur le visage de Lucrèce, lui qui a les Borgia en aversion. Piquée par l’affront des amis de Gennaro qui l’insultent, et soupçonnée d’adultère par son mari, Lucrèce enclenche une vengeance déchirante…

Rarement œuvre dramatique n’est allée aussi loin dans la mise en scène de l’amour maternel. Lucrèce est un monstre moral, mais ce monstre est une mère aimante. « Victor Hugo a écrit Lucrèce Borgia pour raconter la perle qu’il y a au fond de chaque monstre », nous rappelle Denis Podalydès.

The criminal, adulterous and incestuous Lucrezia Borgia seeks to escape from the evil that is her condition, to be recognised and loved by Gennaro, the child she had with her brother. During a ball in Venice, Gennaro, who has an aversion to the Borgias, courts a beautiful masked lady before discovering, to his horror, that it is Lucrezia. Stung by the affront of Gennaro’s friends who insult her, and suspected of adultery by her husband, Lucrezia sets a heartbreaking act of revenge in motion.

Rarely has a dramatic work gone so far in its depiction of maternal love. Lucrezia is a moral monster but this monster is a loving mother. Victor Hugo wrote this play to reveal the pearl at the heart of every monster.

Le Misanthrope donne à voir une société libérée de l’emprise parentale et religieuse, dont le vernis social s’écaille lorsque surgit le désir. Poussés à bout par la radicalité d’Alceste, prêt à renoncer à toute forme de mondanité, les personnages dévoilent, le temps d’une journée, les contradictions du genre humain soumis à un cœur que la raison ne connaît point.

Alceste loves Célimène, a flirtatious woman from Parisian high society. He loathes this world for its hypocritical etiquette but, shaken by a public trial he is called to by this social circle, he must visit Célimène to ask for her help...

Le Misanthrope looks at a society freed from the authority of family and religion, where people show their true nature as lust and desire take over. The main character’s questionable morals, giving up on high society etiquette and demands, force his peers to shed light on their own contradictions and shortcomings.

Rescapée d’un naufrage, Viola arrive en Illyrie où, pour se protéger, elle se travestit en homme et prend le nom de Césario.

Elle entre alors au service du duc Orsino qui, charmé, en fait son page et le charge de transmettre son amour à la comtesse Olivia. Mais Césario/Viola, secrètement séduit(e) par le duc, excelle si bien dans sa mission que la comtesse s’éprend de son ardeur…

Réputé pour ses mises en scène alliant fidélité à la situation dramatique et liberté d’interprétation, Thomas Ostermeier, à travers cette intrigue amoureuse placée sous le signe du travestissement, souligne combien l’éveil du désir peut être vertigineux et la question du genre, troublante. C’est sa première création à la Comédie-Française.

Having survived a shipwreck, Viola arrives in Illyria where, to protect herself, she disguises herself as a man and takes on the name of Cesario. She then enters the service of Duke Orsino who, charmed by her, makes her his page and tasks her with transmitting his love to the Countess Olivia. But Cesario/Viola, secretly attracted to the Duke, excels so well in her mission that the Countess is swept away by her ardour.

Known for stagings that combine fidelity to the dramatic situation with freedom of interpretation, Thomas Ostermeier highlights, through this amorous plot revolving around disguised identities, how bewildering the awakening of desire can be and how confusing the question of gender. This is his first production at the Comédie-Française.

En 2015, Éric Ruf risquait le mythique destin de Roméo et de Juliette sur les planches du Français après plus de 60 ans de poussière. Avec la diffusion de cette autre série de supplémentaires, force est d’admettre qu’il a visé aussi juste que le jeu de ses deux héros.

In 2015, Éric Ruf risked the mythical destiny of Romeo and Juliet on the French stage from under nearly 60 years of dust. With the release of this other run of extra performances, his aim was as undeniably true as the performance of his two heroes.

À Vérone, une rivalité ancestrale oppose Capulet et Montaigu.

Lorsque Roméo Montaigu rencontre Juliette Capulet naît immédiatement entre eux un amour dont ils savent l’éternité et pressentent la fin tragique…

Roméo et Juliette est sans doute l’œuvre la plus connue de Shakespeare. Elle est devenue, au fil du temps et des multiples adaptations dont elle a été l’objet, l’incarnation de l’histoire d’amour absolue. Cette tragédie qui recèle de savoureux moments de comédie est une pièce de contrastes entre la naïveté d’adolescents éperdus et la violence programmée des Montaigu et des Capulet qui ensanglantent Vérone.

In Verona, an old rivalry opposes the Capulet and Montague families. When Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet fall for each other, they know their love is meant to be eternal. However they already sense its tragic ending...

Probably Shakespeare’s best-known work, which, over time and the many adaptations it has undergone, has come to embody the absolute love story. This tragedy, which contains some delectable moments of comedy, is a play of contrasts, pitting the naivety of two lovelorn teenagers against the programmed violence of the Montagues and Capulets bloodying Verona.

LA GIOCONDA

Dans la Venise du XVIIe siècle, Enzo Grimaldo a abandonné la malheureuse Gioconda, dont la mère, La Cieca, est accusée de sorcellerie. Il est maintenant amoureux de Laura, femme d’Alvise. Cette œuvre emblématique, qui se déroule entre l’apogée de Verdi et l’avènement de Verismo, est l’opéra le plus connu d’Amilcare Ponchielli. En plus de la célèbre Danse des heures et de l’aria du suicide de Gioconda, La Gioconda possède plusieurs autres exemples merveilleusement lyriques de la sensibilité post-romantique. L’orchestration magistrale et l’écriture vocale de rôles tels que ceux de Laura, de La Cieca, d’Enzo Grimaldo et de Barnaba constituent d’autres importantes facettes. La distribution prestigieuse aura comme figure de proue Iréne Theorin, acclamée comme étant la meilleure soprano dramatique de notre époque, et ayant obtenu de longues ovations au Liceu pour ses performances dans des rôles wagnériens. Elle apparaîtra une fois de plus à Barcelone pour nous présenter sa Gioconda tant attendue.

In 17th-century Venice, Enzo Grimaldo has abandoned the unfortunate Gioconda – whose mother, La Cieca, is accused of witchcraft – and is now in love with Laura, the wife of Alvise. This emblematic work, from the period between Verdi’s heyday and the dawn of Verismo, is the best known of Amilcare Ponchielli’s operas. In addition to the famous “Dance of the Hours” and Gioconda’s suicide aria, La Gioconda contains many other superbly lyrical examples of post-Romantic sensibility. The masterful orchestration and the vocal writing of roles such as Laura, La Cieca, Enzo Grimaldo and Barnaba, are other key facets. The distinguished cast will be headed by Iréne Theorin, hailed as one of the best dramatic sopranos of our times, who has earned long ovations at the Liceu for her performances in Wagnerian roles. Now she appears in Barcelona once more to give us her long-awaited Gioconda.

« Jamais Carmen ne cèdera, libre elle est née, libre elle mourra », lance l’héroïne de Bizet à Don José à la fin de l’opéra. Cette irrépressible liberté, couplée à la nécessité de vivre toujours plus intensément sur le fil du rasoir, la mise en scène de Calixto Bieito en rend compte comme nulle autre. Du personnage de Mérimée, Carmen conserve chez Bieito les contours profondément ibériques et le tempérament de celle qui vit de petits trafics.

Mais l’oiseau rebelle est foncièrement de notre époque. Vamp aguicheuse et insoumise, témoin de la brutalité masculine et sociétale, elle roule à grande vitesse, pressée d’exister.

“Carmen will never surrender, born free, free will she die”, cries Bizet’s heroine to Don José at the end of the opera. This irrepressible freedom, coupled with a need to live ever more intensely on a knife-edge, is present in Calixto Bieito’s production as in no other. Of Mérimée’s character, Bieito’s Carmen retains her thoroughly Iberian contours and the burning temperament of a woman who lives by small-time trafficking. However, the rebel bird is essentially a creature of our own times. A brazen and indomitable seductress and a product of social and masculine brutality, she lives life in the fast lane, avid for existence.

Le célèbre conte de Charles Perrault, mis en musique par Sergueï Prokofiev, est transposé dans un décor de cinéma où se succèdent les références aux héros du 7e art américain.

Rudolf Noureev propulse sa Cendrillon sous les sunlights hollywoodiens. Avec un producteur pour fée marraine et un acteur vedette comme prince charmant, elle échappe à son destin misérable et voit ses rêves s’accomplir. Une histoire qui n’est pas sans rappeler celle du chorégraphe, jeune Tatar devenu star internationale. Avec ce « ballet-métaphore », la compagnie rend hommage à Rudolf Noureev qui fut son directeur.

Charles Perrault’s celebrated tale, set to music by Sergei Prokofiev, is transposed to a film set. In a series of references to the heroes of the American cinema, Rudolf Nureyev propels his Cinderella under the spotlights of Hollywood. With a film producer Fairy Godmother and a leading man Prince Charming, she escapes her miserable destiny and sees her dreams come true in a story not without similarities with that of young choreographer Tartar, who became an international star. With this “balletmetaphor”, the Company pays tribute to its former director Rudolf Nureyev.

What is this passion that drives Don Giovanni to seduce, subdue, conquer women one after the other, with the fevered coldness of a predator seizing its prey, pursuing through them an obscure prize that forever evades him? For his second collaboration with Da Ponte, Mozart was to brand the history of the opera and forever haunt European culture. Kierkegaard invites us to listen in the Dissolu puni “for the whisper of temptation, the whirlwind of seduction, the silence of the moment”. Mozart-Da Ponte’s cycle continues with Don Giovanni being entrusted to Ivo Van Hove. S’il est l’un des puissants ressorts de l’œuvre, l’intertexte shakespearien est ici bien amer : contrairement à Lady Macbeth, Katerina Ismailova – qui, dans la Russie profonde du XIXe siècle, tombe amoureuse d’un employé de son mari et sera finalement acculée au suicide – est moins manipulatrice que victime d’une société violente et patriarcale. Krzysztof Warlikowski libère aujourd’hui la force de subversion de cette œuvre brûlante et scandaleuse, qui a marqué les premières années de l’Opéra Bastille.

Of Shostakovich’s initial undertaking – a trilogy on the tragic destinies of Russian women through the ages – only one opera was ever written: the hard-hitting Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk.

Although one of the mainsprings of the work, the Shakespearean parallel is here bitterly ironic: unlike Lady Macbeth, Katerina Ismailova who, in the remote reaches of rural 19th-century Russia, falls in love with one of her husband’s employees and is finally forced to commit suicide, is less a manipulator than a victim of a violent and patriarchal society. In Swan Lake, Tchaikovsky took up the legend of the immaculate bird to create some of the most beautiful music ever written for ballet. Les Huguenots est une monumentale fresque figurant d’impossibles amours dans le contexte de la Saint-Barthélemy. Créée à l’Opéra de Paris, l’œuvre y fêtait, en 1936, après plus de mille représentations, son centième anniversaire avant d’être rangée dans un tiroir mémoriel de la « grande boutique ». Pour sa redécouverte, Andreas Kriegenburg inscrit ces intemporels conflits amoureux et religieux dans un cadre immaculé où les costumes n’en ressortent que plus flamboyants et le sang des victimes plus violemment rouge.

By imposing the Grand Opera genre, the composer made history the pivotal theme of 19th-century performing arts. Les Huguenots is a monumental fresco featuring various impossible loves in the context of the Saint Bartholomew Massacre. First performed at the Paris Opera, the work celebrated its centenary there in 1936, after more than a thousand performances, before being stowed in the archives of the Palais Garnier – the “grande boutique”.

For its revival, Andreas Kriegenburg places these timeless conflicts of love and religion in an immaculate setting in which the costumes appear yet more flamboyant and the victims’ blood even more violently red.

Opéra éminemment politique où les conflits de pouvoir se mêlent aux problèmes familiaux, Simon Boccanegra fait écho à la vie de son compositeur – lui qui arbora l’étendard de l’unification italienne et surmonta la perte de sa femme et de ses enfants. Calixto Bieito, le plus shakespearien des metteurs en scène d’opéra, offre humanisme et vérité à cette œuvre hantée de scintillantes images maritimes.

The ambiguities of Verdi’s theatre are particularly clear in his baritone roles, among which is that of Boccanegra, corsair turned doge of Genoa and the troubled observer of the conflicts that tore apart 14th-century landowners and peasants. An eminently political opera in which power struggles are interwoven with family conflicts, Simon Boccanegra echoes the life of its composer – the man who championed the cause of Italian unification and overcame the loss of his wife and children. Calixto Bieito, that most-Shakespearean of opera directors, brings humanism and truth to a work haunted by gleaming images of the sea.

Verdi a écrit l’opéra en quatre actes Aïda, son antépénultième pièce de musique théâtrale, à la demande du khédive d’Égypte, Ismail Pasha. Il a imprégné sa musique d’une couleur locale évidente en insérant par intermittence des passages qui, en raison de leur instrumentation et de leur mélodie, ont une sonorité exotique. L’histoire tourne autour d’un triangle amoureux, dans lequel deux femmes aiment le même homme : la relativement puissante Amneris et l’esclave Aïda aiment toutes deux le capitaine de l’armée, Radamès. Un autre thème important est : « Est-ce que l’amour pour une autre personne transcende l’amour de la patrie ou les lois qui lient une communauté? ». Enfin, un troisième thème a trait au bonheur personnel détruit par le pouvoir implacable des puissants.

Verdi wrote the four-act opera Aida – his third-to-last music theatre piece – at the behest of the Egyptian Khedive Ismail Pasha. Verdi imbued his music with apparent local colour by intermittently inserting passages that because of their instrumentation and melody have an exotic sound. The plot revolves around a love triangle, with two women loving the same man: the relatively powerful Amneris and the slave Aida both love the army captain Radames. Another important theme is, “Does love for another person transcend love for one’s fatherland or the laws that bind a community?”, along with the third theme of private happiness being shattered by the inexorable power apparatus of the influential.

L’influence d’un Orient distant (et imaginaire) a pris forme dans les œuvres de nombreux artistes européens et nord-américains et s’est poursuivie au cours du XXe siècle. Ainsi, Madame Butterfly est une incarnation grossière du conflit entre deux civilisations irréconciliables, où l’une domine l’autre. Homme à l’esprit théâtral subtil, Puccini a brillamment illustré la fragilité d’une geisha amoureuse qui croyait naïvement que le fringant officier nord-américain de la marine l’aimait en retour. La partition évoque des mélodies japonaises traditionnelles agréablement harmonisées. Mario Gas met l’histoire en scène dans un studio de cinéma des années 1930. Il narre ce drame touchant à partir de trois perspectives simultanées : l’opéra lui-même, le film fait sur l’opéra et sa projection en noir et blanc sur grand écran.

A temporary wife was a widespread practice in Japan at the end of the 19th-century. The West – with the United States leading – had established diplomatic and commercial relations with the country in the mid-century and the fascination with the birthplace of geishas spread like wildfire. The influence of a distant (and imaginary) Orient would take form in works by a variety of European and North American artists that continued well into the 20th-century. In this way, Butterfly is a crass embodiment of the conflict between two irreconcilable civilizations, one which dominates the other. A man of a subtle theatrical spirit, Puccini portrayed brilliantly the fragility of a geisha in love who naively believed the dashing North American navy officer also loved her. The musical score evokes agreeably harmonized traditional Japanese melodies. Mario Gas places the story in a 1930s film studio. He narrates this moving drama from three simultaneous perspectives: the opera itself, the film being made of the opera, and its projection in black and white on the big screen.

Dans cette production d’Alex Ollé (La Fura dels Baus), le conflit entre le bien et le mal est le reflet d’une âme tourmentée et emprisonnée.

Le Hollandais, condamné à naviguer sur un océan infini jusqu’à la fin des temps, n’a qu’un désir : être libéré de son bateau maudit et retourner à une vie sur la terre ferme. La mer, infinie et transcendante, devient une métaphore puissante pour décrire les limites imposées à l’homme.

Dans l’autobiographie de Richard Wagner, le compositeur a écrit que son inspiration pour Der Fliegende Holländer l’a d’abord envahi lors d’un voyage en mer avec sa femme, allant de Riga à Londres. Cette œuvre, remplie de symbolisme, a comme thème central la rédemption à travers l’amour d’une femme : le capitaine de navire reconnaît son salut dans la profession de foi de la jeune Senta. Pour sa part, Senta s’abandonne à une destinée avec le spectre sans nom.

Richard Wagner’s Der Fliegende Höllander (The Flying Dutchman) is a masterpiece of the Romantic era, a gripping exploration of love, death, purity and damnation. In this production by Alex Ollé (La Fura dels Baus), the conflict between good and evil is a reflection of a tormented and imprisoned soul.

The Dutchman, condemned to sail across an infinite ocean until the end of time, desires only to be released from his doomed vessel and return to a life on land. The sea, infinite and transcendent, becomes a powerful metaphor for the ultimate limits imposed on man.

In Richard Wagner’s autobiography, the composer wrote that his inspiration for Der Fliegende Holländer first struck during a sea voyage with his wife, traveling from Riga to London. A work full of symbolism, its central theme is redemption through a woman’s love: in young Senta’s pledge of faith, the sea captain recognizes his salvation. For her part, Senta abandons herself to a destiny with the nameless specter.

Peter Wright’s interpretation of The Nutcracker has been enchanting children and adults alike since its first performance

by The Royal Ballet in 1984. Lev Ivanov’s 1892 ballet combined with Tchaikovsky’s sumptuous, iconic score are presented in a festive period setting with vivid designs to make this a charming and magical production.

Loosely based on the story by E.T.A. Hoffmann, the ballet begins in the 19th-century German home of the Stahlbaums, where they are hosting a lively Christmas party. The period setting is captured in opulent detail by Julia Trevelyan Oman’s designs, which include authentic Christmas tree decorations that are magically brought to life. Wright’s choreography ingeniously incorporates surviving fragments of the ballet’s original material, including the sublime pas de deux for the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Prince. But in emphasizing the relationship between Clara and the Nutcracker, the production also gains a touching subtext of first love.

L’amour et l’amitié triomphent dans la vibrante production de Carlos Acosta de cet éblouissant ballet.

Le roman de Cervantès qui dépeint Don Quichotte, le « chevalier à la triste figure », a inspiré d’innombrables interprétations artistiques. Marius Petipa a chorégraphié cet étincelant ballet sur les rencontres de l’homme de la Manche et de son fidèle écuyer Sancho Panza. L’ouvrage contient notamment des rôles virtuoses pour les amoureux Basilio et Kitri.

Pour sa première production pour le Royal Ballet, Carlos Acosta a choisi ce joyeux classique. Sa mise en scène pleine de vie rassemble toute la troupe dans des rôles de villageois exubérants, de gitans passionnés et même de fleurs de fantaisie. Don Quixote is one of Marius Petipa’s much-loved 19th-century classics – its story is drawn from Miguel de Cervantes’s classic novel and set to Ludwig Minkus’s score. The ballet has long been acclaimed for its virtuoso dancing, beautiful and technically demanding “vision scene” and the famously bravura and breathtaking Act III pas de deux.

Carlos Acosta’s production was created for The Royal Ballet in 2013, and brings the sunshine of Spain and the exuberance of the entire Company to the stage. Acosta created new choreography for the gypsy scene in Act II, and uniquely for this production of Don Quixote added on-stage musicians. Warmth, charm and entertainment abound in this energetic and witty ballet, reflected too in the characterful backdrops of Tim Hatley’s vibrant designs.

La fantaisie de Marius Petipa, qui a pour décor une Inde de légende, raconte l’histoire d’une danseuse de temple et du prince qui l’aime, mais en épouse une autre. Le célèbre « Acte blanc » éclairé par la lune – Le Royaume des Ombres –, où l’on voit de multiples images de l’amour perdu du prince le hanter, est un morceau de bravoure pour le corps de ballet. La chorégraphie permet à deux ballerines de rivaliser de talent, et une idole de bronze prend vie de manière saisissante dans un prodigieux solo. Tout au long de l’ouvrage, la mélodie et les atmosphères de la musique de Minkus répondent idéalement à la fluidité et à la précision de la chorégraphie classique et aux péripéties du récit.

An iconic 19th-century Russian ballet, La Bayadère was originally performed at the Bolshoi Theatre in St. Petersburg in 1877, and was regularly performed within the former Soviet Union throughout the 20th-century. It remained unknown in the West until the Kirov Ballet toured with the “Kingdom of the Shades” scene in 1961. Natalia Makarova saw La Bayadère as a child in Leningrad and created this production in 1980. It was first performed by The Royal Ballet in 1989.

The “Kingdom of the Shades” scene in Act III is one of the ballet’s highlights, in which a series of arabesques across the moonlit stage demonstrates the strength of the corps de ballet and the beauty of Marius Petipa’s choreography. The ballet also contains roles of very different styles for two ballerinas in Nikiya and Gamzatti, a spectacular virtuoso solo for the Bronze Idol, and stunning pas de deux for Solor with both Nikiya and Gamzatti.

The contemporary face of The Royal Ballet is shown in works from three of today’s leading choreographers. Wheeldon’s Within the Golden Hour is based around seven couples separating and intermingling, to music by Vivaldi and Bossi and lit with rich colours suggested by sunset. Pite’s Flight Pattern, revived for the first time, uses Górecki’s familiar music and a large dance ensemble for a poignant and passionate reflection on migration.

Between them, a new work created for The Royal Ballet by the acclaimed choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui has its premiere to bring the contemporary truly up-to-date.

In 1965, MacMillan’s Romeo and Juliet was given its premiere at Covent Garden by The Royal Ballet and was an immediate success: the first night was met with rapturous applause, which lasted for 40 minutes, and an incredible 43 curtain calls. The title roles were danced by Rudolf Nureyev and Margot Fonteyn, although the ballet had been created for Christopher Gable and Lynn Seymour. It has been performed by The Royal Ballet more than four hundred times since, as well as touring the world, and has become a true classic of the 20th-century ballet repertory.

Proposée l’an dernier au Nationale Opera, l’adaptation de Stefan Herheim qui mettait Tchaïkovski au cœur de son œuvre est reprise au ROH. Le livret s’y fait l’écho bouleversant du drame du compositeur, homosexuel, jonglant avec la honte, ses désirs et la peur de ceux-ci.

Presented last year at the Nationale Opera, Stefan Herheim’s adaptation placing Tchaikovsky at the heart of his work is taken up by the ROH. The libretto is the troubling echo of the composer’s tragic life as a homosexual torn between his shame, his desires, and his fear of them.

Tchaïkovski a commencé la composition de La Dame de pique en 1889. Il s’est inspiré d’un court récit d’Alexander Pouchkine, l’un de ses écrivains préférés. À l’aide de son frère Modest, son colibrettiste, il a considérablement modifié l’intrigue de Pouchkine, transformant l’opportuniste cynique Gherman en amant passionné, ainsi que Liza en personnage tragique.

Tchaïkovski a travaillé ardemment sur la première de cet opéra, qui a eu lieu au théâtre Mariinski à Saint-Pétersbourg, en 1890, et il fut ravi de son succès.

La Dame de pique est l’une des partitions les plus impressionnantes et variées de Tchaïkovski, avec ses superbes chœurs, ses arias et ses duos intimes (tels que le duo d’amour passionné de Liza et Gherman dans le premier acte), sa mascarade rendant hommage à Mozart ainsi que son épisode surnaturel terrifiant. La production spectaculaire de Stefan Herheim place Tchaïkovski lui-même au centre de l’action, et pose des questions pénétrantes par rapport à la nature de la créativité et aux parallèles entre la vie et l’art.

Tchaikovsky began work on The Queen of Spades in 1889.

He based it on a short story by Alexander Pushkin, one of his favourite writers. He and his brother Modest (his co-librettist) dramatically altered Pushkin’s plot, turning Gherman from a cynical opportunist into an ardent lover and Liza into a tragic figure. Tchaikovsky put a great deal of work into the opera’s premiere at St. Petersburg’s Mariinsky Theatre in 1890, and was thrilled by its success.

The Queen of Spades is one of Tchaikovsky’s most impressive and varied scores, containing grand choruses, intimate arias and duets (such as Liza and Gherman’s passionate Act I love duet), a masquerade paying tribute to Mozart and a terrifying supernatural episode. Stefan Herheim’s spectacular production places Tchaikovsky himself at the heart of the action, and asks searching questions about the nature of creativity and the parallels between life and art.

Michael Fabiano incarne Faust, Diana Damrau sa bien-aimée Marguerite et Erwin Schrott le diabolique Méphistophélès. Des premiers rôles virtuoses, un grand chœur, des décors sensationnels, un ballet et une apothéose finale font de cet ouvrage le summum du spectacle théâtral – l’ampleur luxuriante du grand opéra à la française est magnifiquement mise en évidence dans cette production de David McVicar située dans le Paris des années 1870. Et surtout, la partition contient certains des numéros lyriques les plus aisément reconnaissables qui soient, portés par une équipe de grands chanteurs internationaux et le Chœur du Royal Opera.

Le cycle du Ring de Wagner est l’un des plus grands ouvrages de la scène lyrique. La production de Keith Warner est dirigée par Antonio Pappano, directeur musical du Royal Opera, et cette ultime reprise est interprétée par une distribution internationale exceptionnelle de spécialistes du chant wagnérien. Les quatre opéras du cycle complet vont de la naissance d’un monde à sa destruction et sont peuplés de dieux, de héros et de monstres.

Ce mythe épique parcourt le spectre des émotions humaines à travers une musique et des idées d’une puissance extraordinaire.

Die Walküre (La Walkyrie) est le deuxième opéra du cycle et contient plusieurs des grandes pages du Ring : l’étincelant Enchantement du feu et l’électrisante Chevauchée des Walkyries.

Mais parmi tous ces leitmotivs et cette mythologie nordique, au cœur même de l’opéra, on croise des personnages inoubliables liés par des liens complexes comme les jumeaux Siegmund et Sieglinde, et Wotan et sa fille Brünnhilde, la Walkyrie du titre.
