was the next development, with shafts and tunnels dug following quartz rock. Harrietville was known as the home of one of the world’s largest electric powered mechanical dredges which today, with the mechanical dredge removed, is used as a recreational reserve. In 1862, amid much debate, the township named Morses Creek was changed to what is now known as Bright. The Ovens Valley was found suitable for agriculture including tobacco, hops, oats, maize, nuts and fruit. Today tobacco is no longer grown in the valleys replaced by alternate produce. Gold dredges rendered some land unfit for agriculture, paving the way for our pine industry with the first plantings during the First World War.

regional produce The rich soil, fresh air, clear waters and alpine climate are conducive to growing an array of produce in the Great Alpine Valleys. The region is well known for diversity in food and wine. Post the First World War, migrants brought their passion and skills to the valleys and so began our industry. The Ovens and Kiewa Valleys are dotted with farms producing berries, olives, lavender, flowers, hops and nuts. Much of this produce is available to the public through local farm gates.

Gillian Gasser Valley Nut Grove, Gapsted Gill has lived in the Great Alpine Valleys most of her life, her father Ebe Schlapp, and uncle Henry Schlapp, purchased the farm in 1923 with the vision to establish a walnut orchard. The trees were planted over the twenties and thirties and by the 1950’s the orchard was in full production. Ebe passed away in 1972 and Uncle “Hank” continued to manage the property until 1995 at the age of 90. It was then that Gill took over and today runs it with her children. Gill enjoys yoga and is currently studying a diploma of Yogic Studies, also teaching locally. Gill hopes to include this passion in her “walnut farming”, envisaging outdoor classes in the summer months under the shade of walnut trees. Gill’s favourite aspect of her farm gate business is the opportunity to meet diverse customers. Many come and share recipes and their customary ways of eating walnuts. Valley Nut Grove’s signature product is fresh “green walnuts”. Valley Nut Grove nuts can be found at the Goldfield Green Grocers in Beechworth, Myrtleford Visitor Information Centre, The Olive Shop Milawa and the Alpine Visitor Information Centre Bright as well as the farm gate in Gapsted.

During the warmer months the parks are abuzz with families visiting to enjoy the wonderful outdoor activities on offer in our region. If escaping to a bush retreat is for you, we have many secluded locations that will cater to your needs. As a start, Parks Victoria’s brochure ‘Camping in Victoria’s Parks’ details guidelines for camping in the Great Alpine Valleys including leaving no trace and bush etiquette. The Buckland Valley is home to beautiful camp settings, on the Buckland River. Enjoy the quiet location close to the river and remember to make sure your camp is a minimum of 20 metres from the river’s edge. NugNug Reserve near Lake Buffalo offers a variety of sites powered and unpowered, with toilets, showers and disabled access making this spot perfect for the entire family. Dogs and fires are permitted subject to conditions and make sure you call ahead. Mount Buffalo National Park provides camping at the Lake Catani campground over the warmer months (November to late April). This picturesque campground set amongst the snowgums is very popular, making it crucial to pre book your site over the holiday periods (bookings taken from September 1, call 03 5756 2328). This campground has amenities close by with a communal stone shelter. For the more adventurous, remote sites at

Rocky Creek and Mount Mcleod allow for greater hiking and camping opportunities with a maximum 2 night stay. If you would like more information on campgrounds within the National Parks visit parkweb.vic.gov.au The Alpine National Park offers camp sites dotted along the Bogong High Plains Road for those in 2WD. For visitors after sites with toilets, picnic tables and fireplaces JB Plain, Buckety Plain, Raspberry Hill, Langfords West and Mountain Creek are suitable. Remember to be fully prepared when embarking on your camping trip taking extra water, food and adequate camping equipment. The main townships have camping retailers who can assist you to prepare for your trip and the Parks Victoria website parkweb.vic.gov.au has important information about current conditions, fire bans, floods and road closures. Fall in love with the local art and lifestyle.

Local spaces for art are treasured in the Great Alpine Valleys. There are many art sanctuaries in which works of the regions and Australian artists can be appreciated. In Bright visit the community owned gallery at 28 Mountbatten Avenue. Established in 1982, the Bright Art Gallery is run by a dedicated group of community members. The Gallery’s annual Autumn Art Exhibition is a highlight of its calendar of events. The inaugural event was held in 1983 and today you can view the winning entries from each year. Events and workshops are held in the gallery throughout the year. View the gallery’s calendar by visiting the website brightartgallery.org.au to see what is coming up and how to get involved. Art and culture is vital to our lifestyle and this is evident through groups including the Alpine Actors, Myrtleford Theatre Troupes, Bright Singers and Sing Australia Bright. These groups often perform during festivals and events and are comprised of enthusiastic members of the local community. Music resonates through our mountains. Home to astonishing local talent, if you are looking to hold an event and are in need of local musicians, make sure you contact one of our many production companies for details. For live performances, keep an eye out in town for dates and venues.
