CHIESA PARROCCHIALE DI CARAVAGGIO
CARAVAGGIO PARISH CHURCH
Dedicata ai Santi Fermo e Rustico, la chiesa era già presen te nel X II secolo. La facciata in stile gotico lombardo è interamente realizzata in cotto a vista ed è caratterizzata dalla presenza di un ampio rosone. All’interno, decorato con affreschi di Ferrario, sono conservate diverse opere di notevole pregio. Accanto alla chiesa si erge il Campanile risalente al 1500: anch’esso realizzato interamente in cotto a vista, raggiu nge l’altezza di 71 metri (foto a destra).
Dedicated to Saints Fermo and Rustico, the church was already present in the 12th century. The gothic facade is made entirely of exposed bricks and is characterized by th e presence of a large rose win dow. Th e in side is decorated with frescoes by Ferrario and here are kept man y works of great valu e. N ext to the church stan ds the Bell Tower dating back to 1500, made entirely of exposed bricks it reaches 71 meters high (photo on the right side).
CHIESA PARROCCHIALE DI URGNANO
URGNANO PARISH CHURCH Dedicated to Saints Nazario and Celso, the church has been made in its current form in the second h alf of the 18th centu ry. The facade incorporates a triangular pediment and on top are positioned many statues and the clock. Th e inside is made, as the facade, in gian t order and the visu al effect is amplified by a decoration that emphasizes th e architectural parts. A lot of pain tin g are preserved in side the church inclu din g “La Pietà” by Tintoretto. N ext to the chu rch stands th e Bell Tower built in 1829 and designed by Luigi Cagnola: is 54 meters high and is con sidered one of the most representative monumen ts of the neoclassical style in Lombardy (photo on the left side).
Dedicata ai Santi Nazario e Celso, è stata realizzata nelle su e forme attu ali nella seconda metà del XVIII. La faccia ta comprende il timpano triangolare sulla cui sommità sono collocate diverse statue e l’orologio. L’ interno è composto, come la facciata, in ordin e gigante e l’effetto scenografico è amplificato da una decorazione che sottolinea le parti architettoniche. Numerose le tele conservate all’interno della chiesa tra cui “La Pietà” attribu ita a Tintoretto. Accanto alla chiesa si erge il Campanile realizzato intorno al 1829 su progetto di Luigi Cagnola: alto 54 metri è ritenuto uno dei più rappresen tativi monumen ti dello stile neoclassico in Lombardia (foto a sinistra).

La costruz ion e del Santuario è legata all’apparizione d ella Madonna ad un a donn a che il 26 maggio 1432 vide sgorgare dal p rato una sorgente di acqua ch e si rivelò essere miracolosa. Al primo episod io ne seguiron o altri: in virtù d el gran n umero d i p ellegrin i che accorreva nel 1 575 Carlo Borromeo decise d i far erigere il San tuario. Il complesso è costitu ito dalla chiesa (al cui in tern o sono conservate op ere d ’arte), dall’altare maggiore, da capp elle min ori, d alla sagrestia, dal Sacro Speco con la scena d ell’apparizion e, d al Sacro Fonte d a cui sgorga l’acq ua miracolosa e d ai p ortici ch e ospitan o gli uffici della Direzion e Pastorale.

CASTELLO VISCONTEO DI PAGAZZANO Il Castello di Pagazzano, il cui p rimo nu cleo risale al b asso medioevo, nell’attu ale conformazione è databile al secolo X IV ed era p ossesso d i Barnab ò V isconti. La struttura è in teramen te circondata da un fossato d ifen sivo ed è p ossib ile accedere all’intern o d el cortile dopo aver oltrep assato il p onte, un tempo levatoio. N el corso d ei secoli h a su bito d iverse trasformazioni e ristru tturazion i, ma mostra in alterati i caratteri origin ari e p erciò p ermette d i con oscere gli elementi tip ici dei castelli med ievali. VISCONTI CASTLE PAGAZZANO T he original construction of th e Castle dates back to th e late M idd le Ages bu t the cu rrent shap e can b e d ated to 14 th cen tu ry and was own ed by Barnab ò V isconti. Th e p rop erty is completely su rrounded b y a moat and after crossing a b rid ge, on ce a drawbridge, you can reach the cou rtyard. O ver th e centu ries it has faced several changes and renovation s, bu t it shows intact the origin al featu res and therefore allows to know th e typical elements of med ieval castles. We recall also Fosso Bergamasco, a can al b uilt in the 13th centu ry by the city of Bergamo to defin e it s borders and is cu rrently recogniz ed on ly for short distances. Fosso Bergamasco, that link th e rivers Add a, Serio and Oglio, began at the h eight of Brembate and came up to M ozzan ica. It was formerly u sed as a state b order between th e R epub lic of Ven ice and the Du ch y of M ilan .
Da Casirate d’Adda, avanzando lu ngo la campagna, si raggiunge Arzago d'A dda, in cui sono visib ili le cascine Ravaglia e Ravajola, grandi complessi rurali ch e costituiscono un pregevole documento di storia dell’insed iamento antropico nel territorio e le sorgenti del fiume Tormo. Procedendo verso Misano Gera D’Adda si trovano parecchi fontanili e risorgive come la Sorgente Gaverina. A pochi chilometri dalle sorgenti, nel Comune di Caravaggio, si trova la Riserva N aturale del Fontanile Brancaleone istituit a per salvaguardare la fauna e la flora.
Poco lontano da Caravaggio si trova Mozzanica, lambito verso est dal fiu me Serio: l’ambiente fluviale è tutelato dal Parco del Serio. Lungo il fiume sono stati rinvenuti diversi reperti d i epoca preistorica e sono presenti in sed iamenti di particolare fascino, testimoni dell’antica p resenza d ell’u omo: accanto alle grandi e piccole cascine si trovano borghi fortificati, torri e cappelle. Percorrendo le sue sponde in direzione nord si giunge a Cologno al Serio in cui sono presenti circa 32 fontanili circon dati da ampie zone boscose. Da Cologno si p uò raggiun gere Spirano n elle cui campagne si trova il fontanile San Rocco, circondato da una ricca vegetazione e popolato da diverse sp ecie di animali; la zona è attrezzata con panche e tavoli per la sosta. La fascia di territorio che comprende Cologno, Spirano, Pognano, Lurano, Arcene è una ricca zona di fontanili circondata da boschi tu telata dal Parco di Interesse Sovracomunale d ei Fontanili e dei Boschi.

From Casirate d'Adda, going forward alon g the countryside, you reach Arzago d'Adda, where you can see the farms Ravaglia and Ravajola, two la rge rural complexes that constitute a valuable document of the history of the anthropogenic settlement in the territory and the sources of Tormo River. Proceed ing towards Misano Gera d' Adda th ere are several natural fountain s as th e resurgence Gaverina. Few kilometers far from the resu rgence, in the town of Caravaggio, is the Natural Reserve of Fountain Brancaleone set up to preserve animals and plants life.
N ot far from Caravaggio we find Mozzanica, lapped by Serio River: the river’s environment is protected by Serio Park. Riverside artifacts of prehistoric time has been found during the years and today you can see interestin g settlements, witnesses of man’s precence, especially large and small farmh ouses, fortified villages, towers and chapels. Along th e river banks, goin g north, you reach Colo gno al Serio where we find 32 natu ral fountains surrounded by a large green areas. From Cologno you can reach Spirano in whose cou ntryside there is San Rocco Fountain surrounded by lush vegetation and populated by differen t species of animals; the area is also equipped with tables and benches for resting. The strip of territory that inclu des towns as Cologno, Spirano, Pognano, Lurano and Arcene is an area where natural fountain s abound, surrounded by forests and protected by Fountain s and Forests Park.
PALAZZO VISCONTEO DI BRIGNANO GERA D’ADDA
VISCONTI PALACE BRIGNANO GERA D’ADDA
Il complesso d enominato Palazzo Visconti è costituito da tre parti ben distinte ma correlate tra loro: il nucleo difensivo, risalente al XIII secolo; il Palazzo Vecchio, edificato nel XVI secolo e il Palazzo Nuovo, opera sei-settecentesca. Al primo piano del P alazzo Vecchio, sede del M unicipio, si trovano le sale più riccamente decorate tra cui la Sala del Trono, ampio locale sulle cui pareti campeggiano i ritratti dei Visconti. Il Palazzo Nuovo è invece particolare per i suoi interni completamente affrescati e per il giardino scenografico che si sviluppa lungo il lato ovest della costru zione. Una particolarità ch e unifica i due Palazzi è la presenza costante di maschere decorative con diversi temi iconografici.
The complex called Visconti Palace consists of three distinct parts but related to each other: the defensive core, built in 13th century; the Old Palace, built in the 16th century and the New Palace work of 17th century. On the first floor of Old Palace, now the Town Hall, are situated the more magnificent rooms like Sala del Trono, a big space wh ere p aintings of the fomer own ers, th e Visconti, are hanging on the walls. The N ew Palace is particularly interestin g for its interior completely frescoed and for the spectacular garden that runs along the west side of the building. A special featu re that unifies the two palaces is the constant p resen ce of decorative masks with different iconographic themes.

BORGO DI COLOGNO AL SERIO Il cen tro storico di Cologno al Serio è racch iu so entro il perimetro dell’an tico circuit o difen sivo: an cora oggi è visibile il fossato realizzato n el secolo XIII. Lungo il fossato sono ub icate le qu attro p orte di accesso al centro, la p iù imponente è Porta Rocca: qui sorge la R occa di C ologno, p iccolo fortilizio realizzato contemp oran eamente al fossato e u lteriormente rafforzato n ei secoli X V e XVI. Attualmen te la struttu ra è adib it a a sede del M un icipio, a M useo della C iviltà C on tad ina e a C en tro C ivico C u lt urale. Al su o intern o è ub icato anch e il Parco della Rocca con l’anfiteatro.
COLOGNO AL SERIO VILLAGE Th e h istorical center of Cologno al Serio is en closed within th e p erimeter of th e ancient defen sive circu it: still today you can see the moat that was bu ilt in th e 1 3th cen tury. Alon g the moat are located fou r gates that p ermit to en ter in th e h eart of town ; the most imp ressive is Porta Rocca: h ere stands th e fortress of Cologno, a small fort that was made wit h th e moat and further stren gth en ed in 15th and 16th centu ries. T h e b uildin g is cu rrently u sed as T own Hall, as M u seu m of Ru ral Life and as C ivic Cu ltu ral Cen tre. O n the inside is located also the Rocca Park wit h th e amph ith eater.

Dop o i restauri voluti dai Viscon ti e dai Colleon i nel 1538 divenn e p rop rietà della famiglia Alb an i che tra la fin e del XV III e XIX restaurò la rocca e il cortile in tern o: ven gon o q u in di conferite le forme n eoclassich e attu ali. N el 18 40 vengono attuati altri in terven ti che conferiscono al castello un aspetto medioevale, second o la cu ltu ra romantica ottocentesca. Attualmente è di p rop rietà dell’ammin istrazion e comunale e vi ha sede la b ib lioteca. Il castello conserva an cora la forma q uadrangolare originaria così come i muri a base scarp ata. Di n otevole in teresse son o il giardin o p ensile e le sale in terne: la Sala rossa, il camerin o delle grottesche decorato con soggetti mitologici, la Sala degli Stemmi e la sala delle quattro stagioni.
VISCONTI CASTLE - ROCCA ALBANI URGNANO Th e first nu cleus of th e Castle dates back to the 13 th cen tu ry. After the restoration by Viscon ti and Colleoni families, in 1 538 b ecame property of Alban i family that b etween the end of th e 1 8th and 19th cen tu ries ren ovated th e fortress an d the inn er cou rt to wh om are conferred th e cu rrent neoclassical shapes. In 1840 they are imp lemen ted with oth er action s that give the castle a medieval app earance, accordin g to 19th centu ry Romanticism. Rocca is cu rrently owned b y th e Cit y Hall and it h osts the lib rary. The castle still has th e square shap e as the original walls mad e escarp ment. V ery interestin g are the roof garden and the rooms: th e R ed on e, the dressing room of grotesques d ecorated with myth ological sub jects, the Coat of Arms and th e Four Season s din in g room.

Al fine di salvagu ardare gli amb iti n atu ralistici ed i sistemi di p aesaggio con particolari peculiarità storico-cu ltu rali, sono stati istitu it i diversi parch i tra cui il Parco dell'Adda N ord, il Parco del Serio, un Parco di in teresse sovracomun ale PLIS della Geradadda, il Parco dei Fontan ili e dei Boschi, la riserva n aturale del Fon tan ile Bran caleon e e il Parco locale di in teresse sovracomun ale del fiu me Tormo.
In order to safeguard natu ral areas an d landscape systems with particular h istorical and cultural p ecu liarities, were estab lish ed several parks in cluding the River Adda N ord Park, th e R iver Serio Park, th e local PLIS of Geradadda, Fountain s and Forests Park, the N atural Reserve of Foun tains Brancaleone an d the local R iver T ormo Park of inter communes in terest.
La p asseggiata nella campagn a b ergamasca può avere in izio dal Parco dell’Adda N ord : seguendo il corso del fiume a Canonica d’Adda è p ossibile vedere l’imb occatura Roggia V ailata e giungendo in Località Sant’Ann a si trova un in teressante sistema di digh e. Proseguend o si arriva a Fara Gera D’Adda, dove l'acqu a del fiu me è stata sfruttata p er il fun zionamento delle macch in e del Linificio e Canapificio nazionale. A Fara è in oltre p ossibile attraversare il fiume grazie al ponte pedonale in ferro, che immette in u na zon a b oschiva ricca di vegetazione. Da qui si può giu ngere a Casirate D’A dda attraversando il Bosco d ella Lanca che osp ita gli ultimi lembi di foresta rimasta lu ngo il tratto dell’Adda.
Th e walk in the ou r countryside can start from Adda N ord Park: followin g the cou rse of th e river in Canonica d’Adda you can see Roggia Vailata, an irrigation ditch, an d coming in Location San t'An na, an interestin g system of dams. Going on this way you arrive in Fara Gera d' Adda, wh ere the river water has b een used for th e op eration of th e machin es in the national Flax and Hemp M ills. A Fara is also p ossib le to cross th e river walking on the iron pedestrian bridge, wh ich leads in to a green area. From here you can arrive to Casirate D'A dda th rou gh th e Forest of Lanca wh ich h osts th e last remain in g p atch es of forest along th e Adda River.
