Dear Friends and Neighbors, As we gather for the WRBA’s 43rd Annual Fundraiser, please take a few moments to flip through the pages of this year’s journal. You will read about this year’s honorees and the difference each one has made—and con)nues to make—in Woodhaven. In this journal, you will also read about our community’s hard work and con)nued dedica)on to making Woodhaven a wonderful place to live and be part of. Day a4er day, week a4er week, and month a4er month, we work together to ensure we are part of special projects, events, and the decision-making process that can affect Woodhaven for many years. The members of our community have come out for a variety of events: graffi) clean-ups, a rally to demand ac)on on the par)ally collapsed building on Jamaica Avenue, par)cipatory budge)ng, an extremely successful
clean-up of Forest Park’s Mary Whalen Playground, our Thank a Vet BBQ, and a pasta dinner to raise much-needed funds for the Woodhaven-Richmond Hill Volunteer Ambulance Corps, among others. And so much also happens behind the scenes to make the WRBA’s influence felt across neighborhood. These displays of teamwork, community, and friendship ensure that Woodhaven remains an ac)ve and caring neighborhood. With new ideas, volunteers, and a li*le hard work, the WRBA will con)nue to grow and flourish for genera)ons to come. Thank you for being a part of that, and for making Woodhaven a great place.

Man of the Year - Allan Smith Allan Smith grew up in Woodhaven, living on a dead end street just off of Forest Parkway not very far from where he lives now. As a young man, Smith studied architecture at Syracuse University and went on to work at a large firm in Manhattan, but life brought him back home where his interest in local history flourished, particularly Woodhaven’s rich and interesting history. Smith is a director with both the Woodhaven Cultural & Historical and Queens Historical Societies, and he is also a published author, co-writing “Cypress Hills Cemetery” for Arcadia Publishing. Smith is also playing, once again, a crucial role in the restoration of the colonial-era Wyckoff-Snedicker Family Cemetery behind All Saints Church (formerly St. Matthew’s) on 96th Street. Smith’s personal history with the cemetery goes all the way back to his childhood. “When I went to Sunday school at St. Matthew’s the windows overlooked the land. Even back then it was badly overgrown,” he recalls. “If it weren’t for the larger monuments, you wouldn’t have known what it was because you couldn’t even see the smaller stones.”
Since then, the cemetery has had its ups and downs, enjoying a brief revival when it was restored in the late 1990’s. Smith was a crucial part of that restoration, but within the past decade it was badly neglected again . But today, the story of Wyckoff-Snedicker Family Cemetery is a much more optimistic one. The new pastor of All Saints Church, the Rev. Dr. Norman Whitmire Jr., sees the cemetery as an asset instead of a burden and the students of St. Thomas the Apostle’s Woodhaven History Club, led by teacher Patti Eggers, have been using the restoration of this cemetery as both a community beautification and an educational project. “This is wonderful,” Smith says. “It’s great because we want to teach these young people that this is our history and their history. And after we pass on we hope they will carry it forward to the future generations.” “The kids really enjoy working with Allan,” Eggers says of her students. “He’s so very knowledgeable and we appreciate how generous he is with his time. He really has a way of bringing it alive for the kids. He is a real treasure to our community.” And it is for that lifetime of promoting Woodhaven’s history that we are grateful to Smith and look forward to seeing him honored as Man of the Year.

Woman of the Year - Margie Schmidt Imagine a resident of Woodhaven from the 1920s who steps into a time machine and winds up in 2014. Our time traveler may stagger around our community, stunned by how much the Woodhaven he knew and loved had changed in 90 years. But suddenly, our time traveler’s eyes spot a very familiar and beloved sign, looking much as it did when he left the 1920s: Schmidt’s Candies. Our time traveler steps inside and is transported back to his own familiar time and place. The display case, the scales, and the décor are all very familiar to our time traveler. And all of the sweets – hand-crafted chocolates, caramels, vanilla crèmes, fudge, and rows of jars containing old-fashioned items such as Malted Milk Balls, Lollipops, and other hard candies – look every bit as delicious as they did way back when. Well, you might not be a time traveler, but you’ll certainly feel like one when you walk through the door of Schmidt’s Candies at 94-15 Jamaica Avenue. And inside you’ll be greeted by Margie Schmidt, who is being honored this year as our community’s Woman of the Year by the Woodhaven Residents’ Block Association. Schmidt has not only kept the interior of Schmidt’s Candies the same as it was when it was opened by her grandfather in the mid-1920s, but the candies themselves are exactly the same.
“The recipes, the ingredients, the way everything’s made hasn’t changed a bit,” Schmidt says. “It’s the way I was taught to make everything when I was a kid growing up around the store.” A lifelong resident of Woodhaven, Margie has been connected to her family’s business, and to our community, for her entire life. While much of everything around all of us has changed rapidly over the years, she is very much aware of the comfort and the magic of the old days that Schmidt’s Candies provides. “You see someone walk in the door, they look around and see the way things were way back when, and they smile,” she says. “That’s a great feeling.” Traditionally closed for the summer, Schmidt’s Candies reopens every September, as it has since 1925. Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Valentine’s Day and Easter follow in rapid succession, all big business holidays for Schmidt’s. “Once we reopen, I’ll be in here 12, 14 hours a day,” Schmidt says, smiling. Apart from her long hours spent at the shop, Margie also serves on the Board of Directors at the same school she went to, St. Thomas the Apostle, now known as STA Catholic Academy. Business of the Year - The Avenue Diner In a tough economy, it is very hard to keep a business afloat, much less find the )me and money to also be a generous donor and a supporter of other groups and organiza)ons within the community. But Paul Vasiliadis manages to do just that, and it is for this reason that his business – The Avenue Diner at 9106 Jamaica Avenue – is being honored as Business of the Year . Vasiliadis is a member of the WoodhavenRichmond Hill Kiwanis Club, a global organiza)on that focuses on changing the world by serving and helping children, one at a )me. Not only is Vasiliadis a member, but the Kiwanis hold their mee)ng twice a month at The Avenue Diner on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of the month at 6:30 p.m. Vasiliadis and The Avenue Diner also sponsored a baseball team in WORKS Li*le League this year, and the diner has opened its doors several )mes to local groups and organiza)ons for mee)ngs. Vasiliadis came to Woodhaven in early 2009, taking over the loca)on when the Forest View Restaurant closed. An extensive renova)on followed, and The Avenue Diner opened to the delight of many, par)cularly the regulars who were accustomed to having a place to call
their home at meal)me. But running a business that is open seven days a week is a demanding job. Vasiliadis notes that he has taken just eight days off over the past five-plus years. Vasiliadis is assisted every morning by his father, Jimmy, who opens the restaurant and handles the early morning shi4. “I really don’t know what I’d do without him,” he says. Like all good local businesses, The Avenue Diner also helps our local community by providing employment. It is important to keep in mind that there are nine people who live locally that work there. Our local economy is quite fragile, and much of it depends on people who live here trying their best to keep as much of their money right here in the community by shopping and ea)ng locally. Woodhaven Hall of Fame - Lewis’ Of Woodhaven The motto on their business card was “We We Sell Everything” Everything – a bold statement that is difficult to back up. But Lewis’ of Woodhaven did back it up – and they did sell everything – for over 70 years from the day it opened in 1933 until its closing in 2004. Lewis’ started as a small store in Brooklyn before Louis Lewis moved to Woodhaven, opening up in a 20-foot storefront that eventually expanded into their 85th Street store. The business was handed over to his two children, Larry and Julius. “My father and my uncle got along socially,” Larry’s son Jeff Lewis recalled. “But they had two very different ideas on how a store should be run and they ran into difficulty among themselves, so
they opened up a different store and my father ended up in the 90th Street store and Julie ran the 85th Street one.” And that was how Woodhaven became blessed with not just one, but two remarkable stores that once you started
shopping there you knew you couldn’t live without. “It was crazy, but everybody in Woodhaven had ‘their’ Lewis and you couldn’t convince them to shop in the other store,” Jeff recalls. Instead of competitors, though, the two stores complimented each other and it was a common sight to see Lewis’ employees dashing between 85th and 90th Street to get an item the other store carried for a customer. And the quality of the two stores never diminished one bit over the years as the businesses were handed down to Larry’s son Jeff and Julie’s son Robby. That you could always get what you were looking for in one of the two stores spawned a popular saying around Woodhaven – “If you can’t find it in Lewis’, you don’t need it!”

It’s been another busy 12 months for the WRBA since last year’s celebration. Through your generosity we were able to contribute to the East Coast Car Association’s Toys Run; we gathered to watch the WBID’s Christmas Parade (this year we’ll march in it!); and we elected a new President and VicePresident (Martin Colberg & Giedra Kregzdys joining Treasurer Stephen Forte above). 2014 began with a rally outside of the Woodhaven-Richmond Hill Volunteer Ambulance Corps. As the weather warmed, the residents of Woodhaven sponsored a WORKS Little League team (The WRBA Royals) and before the season was over, we were managing it! We held a BBQ to Thank Our Woodhaven Vets outside American Legion Post 118, a gigantic cleanup of Mary Whalen Playground, and organized a Pasta Dinner Fundraiser with our electeds for the Ambulance Corps and held numerous graffiti cleanups. Yes, you could say we’ve been busy!
