Community . . . Working Together

Photo courtesy of Nicholas Biondo Dear Friends and Neighbors, As you page through this year’s journal you will have an opportunity to read about this year’s honorees - please take a few moments to get to know them. We are also here to celebrate what turned out to be a fantas c year of teamwork within our community. Nothing will ever be+er represent the spirit of community and togetherness than our ac ons in the wake of Hurricane Sandy last Fall. The call for dona ons and volunteers went out and the residents of Woodhaven responded in a huge way. Cases of food and water, nearly a thousand bags of clothing, and thou-

sands of dollars were collected at the offices of the WRBA. Volunteers spent days and nights at our offices loading and unloading vehicles, sor ng clothing, folding it, organizing dona ons, making sandwiches, driving back and forth between Woodhaven and the effected areas - it was a tremendous display of teamwork. I never have - and likely never will - be more proud to be a member of this community. We are at our best when we work together and tonight I am extremely happy that we are together to celebrate.

Woman of the Year - Patti Eggers In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, the Woodhaven Residents’ Block Association put out the call for donations and volunteers. Patti Eggers did not hesitate, coming in early the first day, bringing along friends and family. And for the next few weeks and months, Patti was a tireless relief worker. “It was one of the best things I was ever involved with,” Patti says of her experi-

ence. “It was infectious. We all motivated one another, we motivated an entire school. All the kids that came along and helped, they’d go back to school and talk about it to others and then they’d want to get involved and help too.” Indeed, the roster of volunteers grew as the days passed and more often than not, the new volunteers knew of our community’s efforts through Patti. When asked to name a highlight of the relief drive, Patti says that there were many, but that the toy drive really stood out. “The children were the hardest hit by the storm and the generosity of the peo-

ple from this community was unbelievable,” she says, reminiscing about the morning when she led a convoy of five cars and vans completely stuffed with children’s toys to the Rockaways. “That was really special.” Patti came to Woodhaven with her husband John from Jackson Heights (with a detour through Chicago) in 1986. Today, Patti teaches 2nd graders and says the best part of her job is watching her students grow up. “This is such a small school and kids always come back to say hi. And when the younger children see the older kids come back, it gives them a sense of belonging to the same community; and they all want to be like them when they grow up.” Patti leveraged that sense of belonging when she led the production of a video about the history of our community and the children’s place in it. That project, which was done alongside our Woodhaven Historical Society, is just the start of many that Patti hopes to see accomplished in the future. It is because of these skills and because of her enthusiasm that Patti is being honored as Woodhaven’s Woman of the Year by the Woodhaven Residents’ Block Association

Man of the Year - Paul Rudolph Jr. This year, we are very happy to be honoring a good friend to Woodhaven for our Man of the Year, 2013. Mr. Paul Rudolph, Jr. is the proprietor of Walker Funeral Home, he is active in the community, associated with several organizations; he has worked with the Kiwanis and he also serves on the Board of Directors of the Greater Woodhaven Development Corporation. Paul Rudolph, Jr. is a familiar face at our Holiday Tree lighting ceremony each year and it has become a tradition that he leads the neighborhood children in a performance of – what else? – Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. Walker Funeral Home was established in 1899, making it one of a small handful of businesses in our community that have reached the century mark. Originally, it sat on Jamaica Avenue, between 86th and 87th Streets, currently the office of Attorney James Rooney (the lawyer office with the clock in the window). Next time you pass by, take a good look and you can easily picture it as a funeral home. The Walker family opened a second location in 1942, with more space and ample parking. The Jamaica Avenue location stayed active into the 60s and the “new” location remains open to this day, 2 blocks south of Jamaica Avenue on 80th Street. The founder, Nathanial Walker, had 3 sons who ran the business for a few decades but none of their children wanted to carry on. And so, Paul’s parents (Paul Sr. and Jesse) entered the picture in 1983, taking on the business and bringing it forth into the 21st Centu-

ry. And it is their good, caring nature which has served them and our community well. Walker Funeral Home’s services are affordable and you can also arrange direct cremations. They are also adept at handling funeral services from many different cultures and religions – Jewish, Buddhists, Indians, Hindus, etc. You can call Paul Rudolph, Jr. at 718-296-

4343 or email him with questions at info@walkernf.com. When we announced that Paul Rudolph, Jr. of Walker Funeral Home would be honored, one of our commenters on Facebook said: “We had my dad's services held there and they went above and beyond. What genuine caring people.” In Paul’s line of work you are quite often dealing with people at a most difficult time in their lives and it’s a testament to Paul and his family that this is a sentiment echoed by many residents of Woodhaven, past and present. It has been my experience with Paul Rudolph, Jr. that he is always looking to lend a hand to the community and we are very honored that he will be Woodhaven’s Man of the Year in 2013.

Organization of the Year American Legion Post 118 In 1919, right after the end of World War One, Congress chartered the American Legion, a national organization for veterans. Woodhaven’s Post No. 118 was one of the very first posts to be chartered in these United States. Our American Legion is a special organization that deserves this honor. Not only does the American Legion help those that have put their lives on the line for our country, but they help the young people here in Woodhaven, they provide scholarships through many programs, and they promote patriotism in our youngest citizens (witness the yearly Flag Day event at St. Thomas the Apostle School). They hold a wonderful ceremony each year on Memorial Day in front of their Garden of Remembrance, an annual shrine to members of Post 118 who are no longer with us. They also contribute to relief efforts when disaster strikes (such as last year in the wake of hurricane Sandy) and they also support the troops that are serving in locations all around the world. “We are part of the Adopt a Platoon program,” explained Commander of Post 118, John Lawless. “We have sponsored platoons from the 10th

Mountain Division that were sent overseas. We provide them with things that the military wouldn’t normally give them during their deployment, such as favorite foods, dry goods, toiletries, etc.” Describing Post 118, Commander Lawless notes that they run the gamut from a 95-year old paratrooper who served in the Philippines in World War Two to a young 22-year old who was deployed in Iraq. “We’ve all been through boot camp, we’ve shared a lot of the same experiences, so there’s a bond of true affection among our members.” Commander Lawless also has high praise for the American Legion’s Ladies Auxiliary. “Quite often, if it weren’t for these ladies, we wouldn’t get past the planning stage,” he said. American Legion Post 118 is always looking for new members to join their ranks. In fact, Commander Lawless noted that they will be making a special effort to recruit women who have served our country, as well as more members who have recently served in Iraq and Afghanistan. Their building is on the corner of 91st Street and 89th Avenue and they can be reached at 718-846-6116.

Roger & Joe We have attended the Memorial Day ceremony at the American Legion Post 118 the past few years and taken many photos of all of the markers. It’s a tremendous sight, row after row, column upon column of neatly placed markers, each with the name of a person who has served, who is no longer with us. In most cases, however, the names are those of people who you never met, people you did not know. While it is a touching sight, we never felt that personal impact that so many others have felt. So we weren't prepared for the feeling you get when you see the names of persons you knew very well, persons you cared for. We experienced that this weekend when we saw 2 of the new crosses added to the Garden of Remembrance for two beloved Woodhaven figures -- Mr. Joe Virgona and Mr. Roger Hennin. Roger Hennin Both were good men, longtime residents of Woodhaven, men of good faith. They were both family men with lovely wives – Joe met his Sue overseas at the end of World War 2; Roger met his Josephine at a beach party in the Rockaways. They both raised their families here in Woodhaven, good children who have grown into good adults.

Both men were deeply involved with their church, St. Thomas the Apostle. Roger, who had considered life in the priesthood, became a Eucharistic

Joe & Roger

Minister and together, with Josephine, they would bring Communion to housebound residents of the community as well as the sick and elderly at Jamaica Hospital. Joe was a historian who was very involved in developing the history of St. Thomas on their 100th Anniversary and led the way for the restoration of a plaque honoring 32 young men who gave their lives in World War 2. Both men were also very involved in making our community a better place through their many years of work with the Woodhaven Residents’ Block Association. Time and time again, we speak with people who say that they “want to get involved.” Sadly, and more often than not, we never hear from these people again until the next time they have a problem. With Roger and Joe, action accompanied their talk. They didn’t want to get involved – they got involved. And Woodhaven is a much better place because of their involvement. It is fitting that these two good men entered the American Legion Post 118's Garden of Remembrance together and had their markers placed side-by-side.

We will miss Joe Joe’s experiVirgona ence in dealing with people - his advice and his counsel was always welcome. Most of all we will miss the way he made people smile. He would walk into a room and make people laugh with a small joke or a song. Joe was an entertainer. We will miss Roger’s guidance and

We will miss them both at our meetings. There were times over the past few years where you could see it pained them to make the walk from their homes to our Town Hall meetings at the Ambulance Corps. But there they were, month after month. While others would say that they couldn’t make the meeting because they were tired or not feeling well, Joe and Roger came out because they didn’t just talk about getting involved. They were involved. They loved their community and the feeling was mutual. And so, while standing at the gates of the American Legion, you will feel that by knowing Roger and Joe you will

Josephine, Roger, Joe and Sue

will miss the perspective he brought to the issues we face today. When speaking to those who wish to run a railroad through our community we likened it to how the city tore this community apart when they widened Woodhaven Boulevard. When they countered by saying that was ancient history, we were able to point to Roger as someone who watched his own house razed.

know the men and women those markers honored just a little bit better – for they were all cut from the same cloth. These are the people that when there was a job to be done, they did it – they didn’t just talk about it. Thank you all for your service, and God Bless -- you will be remembered and honored, always.

Woodhaven Businesses Reaching Their Consumers The WRBA’s Journal is a keepsake that residents and community leaders enjoy while at the annual celebration of the Woodhaven Residents’ Block Association. But it is also published online on two well trafficked websites as well as broadcast to our residents via Facebook, Twitter and our Mailing lists. Each business that sponsors the WRBA is showing their support for the residents of Woodhaven—and we ask our residents to reciprocate and patronize the businesses that support us. Each business also gets a framed Thank You certificate - something you can display in your place of business to show your customers you care about their community. We will also welcome you to come on our weekly web-based radio show and talk about your business. To get your business listed in the 2014 journal and strengthen your relationship with the residents of Woodhaven - call us at 718-296-3735 or email us at info@woodhavennyc.org.
