CO-FOUNDER & EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR JASON COLEMAN Dear Supporters and Champions of STEM Education, Project SYNCERE’s journey into 2022 was marked by remarkable growth and unforgettable achievements, all possible thanks to the tireless dedication of our passionate team, committed Board of Directors, generous sponsors, and selfless volunteers.

We were thrilled to announce the advent of STEM in Motion, a revolutionary program born out of a collaboration between Project SYNCERE, Tufts University, and the Lego Foundation. This initiative is rewriting the playbook for hands-on learning by immersing students in experiential STEM experiences that spark curiosity and fuel passion. Through this, we’re helping to mold the future’s game-changers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Despite the continued challenges posed by ongoing COVID restrictions in 2022, our E-CADEMY program has achieved extraordinary success. I am immensely proud to share that every high school senior from our E-CADEMY Program has successfully entered college to pursue STEM disciplines. This momentous achievement speaks volumes about the tenacity, dedication, and unfaltering support that are the bedrock of Project SYNCERE. Amid these testing times, we have instilled confidence in these bright minds, enabling them to continue their educational voyage and encouraging them to make a significant mark in the STEM world.

WHY PROJECT SYNCERE? Project SYNCERE exists with a clear and compelling purpose: to produce the next generation of diverse engineers and innovators who will shape the global technological priorities that influence the world we live in.

We know investing in STEM education is necessary for our shared future. According to the Department of Labor, the demand for STEM jobs is expected to grow 8.8% between 2020 and 2030, compared to 3.7% growth in non-STEM occupations. We also know that STEM-educated individuals are necessary for the United States to remain competitive in the global economy and innovate in fields like healthcare, energy, and transportation, not to mention those in the interest of national security, such as cybersecurity, aerospace, and defense.

Project SYNCERE recognizes the significant disparity in representation within the engineering fields. According to the National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering, underrepresented minorities, representing 30% of our nation’s population, are awarded less than 13% of

engineering degrees. This imbalance hinders the engineering community’s diversity of perspectives and ideas and limits the opportunities available to individuals from historically excluded communities.

Our mission is to bridge this opportunity gap by providing underrepresented youth early access to engaging and impactful opportunities in STEM fields. We strive to ensure that students from historically excluded communities, such as Black, Latino, and female students, have access to every resource needed to discover and pursue their own careers in STEM. Project SYNCERE empowers inquisitive minds by fostering curiosity and providing access to essential STEM educational opportunities, exposing them to a wide range of career opportunities in STEM. This is how we enable young people to realize their full potential. By maximizing their learning potential and creating pathways for students to access opportunities in STEM, we open doors for future engineers and innovators.

E-CADEMY Middle & High School Engineering Program 2021-2022 Academic Year Our E-CADEMY program, powered by the nationally recognized Project Lead The Way curriculum, provides a dynamic 32-week learning experience where students leverage their engineering skills to identify real-world problems and develop unique solutions. The program fosters both teamwork and individual initiative, equipping students with essential skills and knowledge for success at the post-secondary level.

The program’s goal is to establish a pathway that brings like-minded students together, nurturing their motivation and readiness to pursue careers in engineering. By engaging students early in their academic journey, we aim to be a catalyst for boosting the number of students who successfully graduate from college and thrive in STEM careers. This long-term investment in our students’ future not only benefits them but also helps fill the critical need for skilled professionals in STEM fields.

STUDENT HIGHLIGHT Meet Juan Barron, an outstanding E-CADEMY alum and a beacon of Project SYNCERE’s transformative impact. Juan, a Lindblom Math & Science Academy senior, began his journey with us in 6th grade, fueled by a keen interest in engineering. Over the past six years, he has diligently navigated through our E-CADEMY curriculum, mastering various modules from Gateway 1-3 to Pro 1-3.

Juan Barron In the summer of 2022, Juan was able to apply his acquired knowledge and passion for engineering through an internship Project SYNCERE helped secure at Collins Engineering, followed by a tenure as an instructor intern with Project SYNCERE. These enriching experiences allowed Juan to sharpen his skills further, simultaneously empowering him to give back to the community by pouring his knowledge into other students.

Juan’s vibrant E-CADEMY journey has not only solidified his career aspirations in the STEM field but also provided him invaluable experiences and opportunities. As he prepares to embark on his college journey, accepted at Southern Illinois University for a major in architecture, we’re thrilled to witness the fruition of his growth.

Juan’s story is a testament to Project SYNCERE’s mission - igniting curiosity, fueling growth, and transforming lives. His advice to current E-CADEMY students: “Take in all the information given in the program because it is all genuine valuable.” With that, we look forward to more success stories.

Project SYNCERE’s ENpowered program is an innovative initiative designed to introduce students from grades 3-12 to the fascinating world of engineering. This hands-on program allows students to explore STEM concepts through practical engineering challenges, stimulating their interest and deepening their understanding of the subjects.

In collaboration with schools, universities, community organizations, and other youth-centered agencies, we’ve managed to engage over 2,000 students in exciting project-based learning experiences. Our dedicated team, comprising engineers and various STEM professionals, guided students through real-world engineering scenarios, demonstrating how classroom knowledge applies to real-world problems.

Our overarching goal is to ignite enthusiasm for STEM at a young age, laying a robust scientific foundation and propelling them toward a potential career in the scientific domain. By doing this, we hope to nurture the next generation of scientific thinkers and innovators who will shape our future.

ADAPTING TO THE TIMES

Games Go Virtual in 2022 While the usual buzz of in-person gatherings was missed, the organization’s dedication to fostering middle school students’ passion for engineering remained unwavering. In the face of continued challenges posed by the pandemic, Project SYNCERE successfully transformed its annual ENPowered Games into a hybrid virtual/at-school event for 2022 with the theme of “engineering green smart homes.”

Traditionally held at Wintrust Arena in Chicago, the ENPowered Games brings together students from participating schools for a thrilling engineering competition.

However, with safety as the top priority, we decided to allow students to participate remotely from their respective schools and join a culminating watch party for us all to witness and celebrate the innovative and hard work each team put into the competition.

Despite the shift to a hybrid platform, the energy and excitement surrounding the competition was still palpable.

The participating schools eagerly logged on to Zoom, ready to showcase their engineering prowess and problem-solving skills.

Adapting to the virtual environment, students

presented their projects, engaged in live Q&A sessions with our volunteer virtual judges, and tackled engineering challenges with enthusiasm and determination.

The winning teams emerged with well-deserved bragging rights, demonstrating their ingenuity and innovative thinking. The students showcased resilience, adaptability, and a deep understanding of engineering principles, proving that distance could not dampen their passion for STEM.

ENGAGING COMMUNITIES AND FAMILIES

Reflecting on Project SYNCERE’s Summer of STEM-in-Motion In the summer of 2022, Project SYNCERE launched the groundbreaking “STEM-in-Motion” initiative, an ambitious endeavor to facilitate direct STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education outreach in underrepresented communities throughout Chicago. We visited 60 distinct neighborhoods, engaging K-8 students through interactive, hands-on STEM activities that fostered both learning and fun.

Through a strategic collaboration with the Tufts Univeristy Center for Engineering Education and Outreach (CEEO) and the LEGO Foundation, we secured and retrofitted two vans, turning them into state-of-the-art mobile STEM labs. Under the STEM-in-Motion initiative, these moblie units were equipped with both high-tech and low-tech engineering equipment, assuring students had the opportunity for an engaging and hands on educational experience in their local environments.

As we ventured from location, parks to public libraries, our approach became much more than just teaching; it became a community event involving not only the students but their families, too. Encouraging family partication turned out to be a cornerstone of our initiative’s success. We witnessed fisthand the potent influence of family involvement as parents and guardians played alongside their children. helping foster a nuturing home environment where a passion for STEM could flourish.

The summer’s theme, “City of Stories,” took this commynity involvement a step further. Students and their families were encouraged to draw from neighborhood inspiration, using life-sized tinker sets, LEGO kits, and electronic kits to create structures, vehicles, and robots. Each creation narrated a distinct tale about their neighborhoods, facilitating a bonding experience grounded in shared stories and memories.

Looking back on the tranformative journey that was the summer of 2022, we stand inspired by the enthusiasm and creativity unleased in the young minds we encountered. The family engagement element proved vital, showcasing the signigicant role a supportive home environment plays in nuturing budding interest and understanding in STEM fields. It set a strong foundation for families to become continuous pillars of support in their children’s journey in STEM education, sowing seeds for emergence of future STEM professionals.

As we reflect on the triumphs of the past summer, our belief strengthens in the power of community engagement and family support in shaping a new generation of diverse STEM leaders. Our effots continue unabated, driven by the conviction that fosterting familial bonds in learning can be potent tool in prepating a rich ground for the blossoming of future scientists, engineers, and mathematicians.

Empowering Innovation Project SYNCERE Unveils State-of-the-Art Innovation Lab Project SYNCERE recently celebrated the grand opening of its very own Innovation Lab. Made possible through a generous grant from Exelon’s Green Lab program in 2022, the Innovation Lab is set to revolutionize the STEM educational experience for students enrolled in Project SYNCERE’s E-CADEMY program.

The Innovation Lab is a cutting-edge space designed to empower students in grades 6-12 to explore their creativity and ingenuity while engaging in hands-on engineering projects. Equipped with state-of-the-art tools and equipment, the lab will serve as a hub for innovation, where students can turn their ideas into reality and witness their engineering solutions come to life.

Thanks to Exelon’s Green Lab grant, Project SYNCERE established this dedicated space to nurture the talents and passions of its E-CADEMY students. The grant provided the necessary funding to equip the lab with advanced tools and equipment that will support students in their assigned design projects and encourage them to develop their own original concepts.

Establishing the Innovation Lab marks a significant milestone for Project SYNCERE’s E-CADEMY program. With this new facility, students now have access to cutting-edge tools such as 3D printers, a full woodshop, and a CNC machine, enabling them to immerse themselves in the world of engineering and tackle real-world challenges.

The lab will foster collaboration, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills…all essential to learning for success in STEM fields.

This exciting development sets the stage for a future where Project SYNCERE’s E-CADEMY students can truly unleash their potential and explore the limitless possibilities of engineering. With the establishment of the Innovation Lab, the organization is poised to take its E-CADEMY program to new heights.

ALUMNI ENGAGEMENT INITIATIVE

Building Bridges for Success in STEM This year, Project SYNCERE is taking new steps to extend its support and guidance to its alums through its SYNCERE Alum initiative. This program serves as a platform for Project SYNCERE alums to access valuable resources, professional development opportunities, and mentorship to further their success in STEM. One of the key highlights is the collaboration with SThree, a renowned global STEM-specialist talent partner.

SThree provided comprehensive support to Project SYNCERE alums, offering resume-writing workshops and mock interview sessions. Another key collaboration was with Christopher B. Burke Engineering, who engages SYNCERE alum with career-boosting internships. These initiatives equipped students with essential skills and confidence as they navigated the competitive job market and pursued their career goals.

A large part of our work is to foster relationships with colleges and universities on behalf of our students. Project SYNCERE began working with University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Purdue University, University of Michigan, Notre Dame University, University of Illinois at Chicago, and Worcester Polytechnic Institute this year. By engaging with these esteemed institutions of higher learning, Project SYNCERE ensures its students and alum have access to world-class educational resources and experiences.

The Initiative also emphasizes the importance of students giving back to their community. Graduates are encouraged to return and volunteer, becoming role models who inspire and motivate current Project SYNCERE students. This interaction between alumni and students creates a powerful cycle of inspiration and fuels the passion for STEM education among the younger generation.

Project SYNCERE extends its heartfelt appreciation to organizations like SThree and Christopher B. Burke Engineering, who make initiatives like SYNCERE Alum possible. Their commitment to empowering and uplifting Project SYNCERE as students and interns contributes significantly to diversifying the STEM landscape and fostering a more inclusive and equitable future.

Project SYNCERE Summer Camp During the summer of 2022, we solidified our commitment to our students by fortifying our partnership with UIC Chance and expanding our collaboration with Peoples Gas Community Fund. These strategic alliances offered more comprehensive activities that enabled students to immerse themselves further into STEM principles. They were given the freedom to express their creativity as they designed and brought their unique innovations to life. We extend our deepest gratitude to After School Matters and Peoples Gas, whose generous support made it possible for 69 students to participate in our Summer Camps. The ramifications of these partnerships extend far beyond immediate learning outcomes, as they expose students to opportunities and pathways to success in STEM fields. It was indeed a summer of transformation and growth, made possible through the synergistic efforts of our invaluable partners.
