Family attorneys noted those policy changes upon announcing the civil settlement.

By Mike Fleming THE FAMILY OF GEORGIA TECH PRIDE Alliance president Scout Schultz, slain by campus police in 2017, settled with the university this week. Tech officials agreed to pay the family $1 million in civil court.

The university now requires all officers to complete 40 hours of Crisis Intervention training. Every officer also carries a taser in addition to a gun to provide a “less lethal” option during incidents.

“We are hopeful that the university’s example of caring effort will be replicated nationwide,” the family statement said. “Students have let us know the LGBTQIA community is often overlooked and we hope these positive changes continue and that Scout’s life will stand for change.”

The university fired the officer who shot Schultz, but he faced no criminal charges. In 2019, Former Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard decided not to pursue charges against former officer Tyler Beck, a rookie who was 23 at the time of the killing.

During a mental health breakdown, Shultz reportedly urged campus police to shoot him and walked “in a menacing way” toward four officers who told him to stop.

In the lawsuit filed in 2018, the family alleged that while three officers tried to de-escalate the situation, Beck used excessive, deadly force.

Schultz was an engineering student with a 3.9 grade-point who identified as nonbinary and bisexual. Protests erupted over their death, including at least one vigil that was marred by violence that played out live on social media.

The university made several moves in the wake of Schultz’s killing, according to the AJC. It awarded Schultz’s degree posthumously to their family and expanded its LGBTQ Resource Center. It also

“The recent settlement between Scout’s family and the Georgia Department of Administrative Services gives us a moment to reflect again on ways Georgia Tech can better support all members of the campus community,” the university statement said.

Atlanta drag stalwart Aria B. Cassadine swings (and sings) for the fences

The show was filmed in London with contestants from all over the world. All of them were stunning in their performances, proving that this was a competition ready to happen. But wait. Was that only seven queens? You didn’t see Cassadine?

Out Front said ‘Golden Girls’ holiday, but make it gay(er)

By Mike Fleming FANS OF THE GOLDEN GIRLS ALREADY KNOW THAT IT gained ground in the culture wars for LGBTQ equality. They also know the beloved sitcom remains a queer touchstone in watch parties and trivia nights in Atlanta and around the world.

Now those fans can rejoice in a drag reenactment by Atlanta’s only specifically queer, exclusively LGBTQ theater company. The Golden Girls: The Lost Episodes – Holiday Edition plays at Out Front Theater through Dec. 19.

“For decades now, The Golden Girls has endured and endeared audiences from all walks of life,” Out Front Director Paul Conroy told Project Q. “I think they have stood the test of time, especially with queer audiences, because we can both identify with them and see in them many of the women in our lives.”

“Even all these years later, the writing and the characters feel fresh and relatable,” he added. “The four actresses were all early and vocal supporters of queer rights, and there were topics on the show 18 theQatl.com

CLASSICS that no one else would mention at the time.”

Those topics included Blanche’s gay brother and Dorothy’s lesbian friend who falls in love with Rose.

As early as the pilot episode, there is a gay cook named Coco. One of the most memorable episodes for Conroy tackled the AIDS crisis.

“During one exchange between Rose and Blanche, Blanche declares ‘AIDS is not a bad person’s disease, Rose, it is not God punishin’ people for their sins,’” Conroy quoted the episode, entitled “72 Hours.”

“The show might as well have said, ‘We see you, gay community, and we stand with you’ at a time when the government was ignoring our community,” Conroy added.

Making it gay(er) Clearly, it’s not a stretch to say reenacting an episode of The Golden Girls stays true to queer roots.

It was a natural fit for Out Front, which features a screening of a classic Golden Girls episode, followed by two original parody episodes. While drag casts are commonplace, the local production gives that concept a twist.

The cast includes Blake Fountain as Dorothy, Andi Stanesic as Rose, Precious Anika West at Blanche and Robert Hindsman as Sophia. TJ Ruth, Max Mattox, Lisa Boyd, Rial Ellsworth and Kait Rivas play supporting, sometimes dual roles. Micahel Bartkiewicz directs.

“What I love most about the show is that it feels both familiar and fresh at the same time,” Conroy promised. “It is like a family cookie recipe that you have every holiday season – something you look forward to, but this year it has some extra sprinkles on it.”

“I think this is something that, while audiences are laughing, will awaken memories of Christmases past or maybe a moment from the first time they saw a certain Golden Girls episode,” he said.

“People should be ready for something irreverent with a heart of gold.”

“We decided to not cast an exclusively drag cast for a couple of reasons,” Conroy said. “We wanted to cast the best performer for each role, regardless of their identity, and we wanted to make sure that we were not denying opportunities to female actors.”

Rent in Concert kicks off Q’s LGBTQ-est holiday stage shows

By Jim Farmer GRANT MCGOWEN ALWAYS KNEW THAT he wanted to get around to it. The producing artistic director of Pinch ‘N’ Ouch Theater lists Rent as one of his favorite shows. He knocks off a bucket list item with a special concert version of the musical for the holidays on Dec. 23 at Variety Playhouse.

McGowen’s love of Jonathan Larson’s celebrated, Tony Award-winning show, chronicling the life of young bohemian artists in New York’s Lower East Side, goes back to high school. A self-described musical theater nerd who identifies as queer, McGowen was inspired at a young age by the diversity of Rent’s story.

“There is something about the angst and rebellion of it and the inclusivity of all the characters in it, the love and connection they have with each other and the family they’ve built, that really inspired me at a young age,” he said.

Besides directing, McGowen stars as Roger in the concert show. The character is a struggling musician who is HIV-positive and embarks on a relationship with stripper Mimi.

Other cast members include Luna Searles, runner up on NBC’s “The Voice,” local performer Kevin Harry and singer/songwriter Hannah Zale, the front woman of the band Pussywillows.

For a lot of LGBTQ people, the holidays can be tough. For a long time, McGowen looked forward to when the season was over. This year, he didn’t want to feed into that negativity.

“I wanted to do something positive,” McGowen says.

“For people who don’t want to watch A Christmas Carol or listen to that message and want something alternative and cathartic, I hope we can offer that.”

“I like the idea of being able to do this as a sing along,” he adds. “I have always wanted to see Rent when it was more immersive.”

Local all-transgender band Exquisite Gender performs before the concert. The other opening act is vocalist and songwriter Prisca, a self-described “cinematic pop artist who is showing all of her colors.”

It’s easy to see why Rent has such an appeal to LGBTQ audiences, McGowen says.

Proceeds from Rent in Concert go to help unhoused people in Atlanta.

LGBTQ ‘invaders’ put twist on Pride Night at Dad’s Garage

For the holidays, a surprise character “invades” each performance of the scripted classic A Christmas Carol, and the actors of the traditional story must adapt on the fly. The results are, per usual for Dad’s Garage Theatre, irreverent and hilarious.

“Every performance, a new improvised character (aka: “Invader”) jumps into the show to completely derail the storyline,” Terrell said. “Imagine Mrs. Claus showing up to find her long lost love, Scrooge. Or what if Frosty the Snowman shows up? Or a T-Rex? Seriously, every performance of Invasion: Christmas Carol is a new experience.

On Dec. 17, the show welcomes the Gays For Plays social group and all other comers for a Pride Night edition. Details are under wraps to keep the surprise factor, but expect some good old fashioned gay mayhem.

“This style of show lends itself to community nights and what better community than the LGBTQIA+,” Roushdi said. “This performance is special because the audience really can affect the 22 theQatl.com

Speaking of new, healthier holiday traditions, Invasion: Christmas Carol can be a cure for what ails some people during the holidays, especially for LGBTQ audience members who may be disenfranchised.

“We’re all in this awful world together,” Roushdi said. “Having a place to share those experiences can be fun. In fact, we’ve already run into situations where a seemingly innocuous line elicits a huge response from the audience and we discover together what sort of show we want it to be that night.”

Roushdi said amidst the laughter, there’s a very real bonus with Invasion.

“It turns Christmas Carol on its head, but still attempts to deliver a story of redemption and reclamation,” he said. “I’m proud of the show that we’re doing, and I’d love to share it with as many people as possible.”
