SCHOOL GARDEN INITIATIVE
WASHINGTON ELEMENTARY
The School Garden Initiative focuses on teaching elementary school children about the importance of eating sustainable, locally-grown food as well as the importance of preparing healthy meals that include a variety of fruits and vegetables. By implementing gardens in schools, we set the example of providing opportunities and benefits that go beyond the classroom. Working with students, teachers, principals, parents and members of the community, we allow students to understand the importance of interacting with nature, offering hands-on experiential learning opportunities and take pride in the beautification of their school and community. By supporting healthy schools and a healthy environment, one school at a time, we educate students on maintaining a healthy lifestyle, thus reducing their preMATTHEW SHERMAN ELEMENTARY dilection to obesity, early-onset diabetes and hypertenConceptual Designs sion, among other chronic diseases.

CURRENT PROJECT MATTHEW SHERMAN ELEMENTARY
OUR COMMITMENT
Located in the Sherman Heights neighborhood just east of downtown San Diego, Matthew Sherman Elementary School garden is located on a vacant 160’ x 35’ plot of City School property. On average, students perform half to one third as well on California Standards Tests for English Language Arts and Mathematics. Because students are 95% of Hispanic origin, classes are taught half in Spanish.

DESIGN Working with pro-bono architect, Kevin deFreitas, “each subject will be enhanced by “garden-based learning,” a hands-on experience using nature as an educational tool. Water, the region’s most precious natural resource, will be integrated into the design: Rainwater will be collected into a cistern, walkways will be permeable and won’t contribute to urban runoff, and a water reclamation system that harvests gray water from the exterior hand washing sink will irrigate drought tolerant native plants.”
• Coordinate the project design phase utilizing our network of design professionals • Establish a relationship with partners for involvement in customization and employee volunteerism • Coordinate the construction phase • Establish and coordinate a curriculum and activity schedule for a sustainable working model for gardens • Promote understanding of green building technologies and opportunities through demonstration and curriculum •Tailoring projects to achieve partner mission and goals • Promoting healthy eating Once complete, Matthew Sherman Elementary School Garden will become the demonstration project for the School Garden Initiative. By encouraging and supporting a garden in every school, we create opportunities for our children to discover the benefits of eating healthy.
FUNDING: A MATTER OF URGENCY Few question the need to prepare students for the complex world into which they will graduate, but the schooling for sustainability movement nevertheless encounters obstacles: School systems are notoriously slow to change. Responsibilities for schools’ operations are often dispersed through multiple levels of authority, from the local principal to the federal government, with mandates that sometimes conflict. Virtually all schools and districts face financial challenges. Schooling for sustainability competes with other priorities, including standardized testing in public schools and pressure to focus on Advanced Placement in independent schools. Matthew Sherman Elementary will be the showcase, the start of the School Garden Initiative, “Green Gardens Grow”, from which everyone will learn about the importance and benefits of implementing gardens within schools. We are currently fundraising $55,000 through monetary and in-kind contributions and welcome you to join our team.
