Sharyland ISD Superintendent’s Message

You Can Make Your Dreams Come True

Dr. Rob O’Connor Superintendent, Sharyland ISD

Seniors, your journey is about to begin. Congratulations on graduating from Sharyland ISD. Some of you will go on to colleges and universities, military service and others might choose to go straight into the work force. Ian Brennan (Creator of Glee) once said, “You can’t control how smart you are, how funny you are, how good-looking you are. The one thing you can control in your life is how hard you work.” Always give the task in front of you your best effort, and wherever life takes you, I am sure you will shine. I can’t promise you that

life will be easy, in fact I can almost guarantee that you will be faced with many challenges. But you ultimately will decide how you handle the challenges in your life. Will you quit, the first time you fail at a task or will you stand tall and try again? Will you react in anger when someone treats you unfairly or will for forgive them and treat them with respect? Learn from each challenge, and you will become stronger and wiser. The choice of who you become is yours. Yes, you can make your dreams come true. You are amazing! Stay true to who you are. You are unique, God only made one of you. In closing, I’ll remind you that family is the one true constant in life. Take care of your family relationships. Through the good times and the bad times more than likely you will have a family member by your side. Take time to thank them for their support and appreciate them. Life is a great journey. Sooner or later you realize that there is no final destination, no final goal to accomplish and every day matters. The true joy of life is the trip. I wish you nothing but the best in your life journey.

UIL at Pioneer High School: Success from Hard Work

Julio Salinas (left) and Alberto Padron By Progress Times As students are gearing up for graduation, reflection on the year and the achievements the school has made is only natural. In its third year, Pioneer High School has seen some major success in UIL competitions. The school fosters a competitive and high-achieving program, and their suc-

cess of their approach is evidenced by the number of students advancing to the state level. Alberto Esteban Padron, a senior who advanced to State in the Accounting UIL competition, spoke about how the extra-curricular program helped to foster his interest in finance, and how the com-

Sharyland High School’s Top Three to continue leadership path

Julio Contreras Valedictorian

In life, there are two types of people. Those who lead, and those who follow. It takes a tremendous amount of motivation, effort, and discipline to become one of the few leaders in this world, but at the end of the day, all the determination and hard work pays off in ways we, sometimes, can’t imagine. Three examples of such leaders are Julio Alberto Contreras, Joshua Jones, and Mark

Stephens, this year’s top three students. 2017’s Valedictorian, Julio Contreras, plans to attend Stanford University in California to major in Earth System Science. Also, this fall he plans to study Democracy, Development, the Rule of Law, and Sustainability Studies. “My goal is to one day infuse both of these disciplines into a professional career as

an Environmental Lawyer,” he said. “And help set the legal foundation for the massive transition to sustainable development and energy that will be necessary within the coming years.” Being selected as valedictorian is not an easy task to accomplish, especially when all the pressure lies on you. However, Julio’s situation was different as he credits other people for motivating

him to continue and obtain the success he now has. “My mom was always there for me.” Julio said. “I had a ton of teachers that helped me such as Miss Salinas and Miss Garza.” And, after seeing all his dedication pay off, he says “it feels good.” It has been a tough journey for Senior, Julio Contre-

Exceptional math & science skills take Pioneer top 3 on different paths

Ewin Zuo

Valedictorian While the top three ranking students of the 2017 graduating class of Sharyland Pioneer High School have shared a strong affinity for math and science, their career paths are on very different trajectories. One hopes to pursue a career in medicine working with Doctors Without Borders to serve the disadvantaged. Another plans to pursue a career in computer science. And the third plans

to become a pathologist. This year’s valedictorian at Pioneer High, Ewin Zuo, son of Xin Zuo and Yinping Jiao, has always had a passion for math, physics and computer science. “I have always loved creating things, and CompSci (Programming) has been that outlet for me. And who doesn’t like thinking about Special Relativity and Time Dilation?” he states in his

personal biography. The National Merit Scholar and captain of the school’s UIL Computer Science team plans to attend the University of Texas at Austin to study computer science. Pioneer High salutatorian Anne Marie Rara, daughter of Maria Theresa Penaloza-Rara and Fidel Amador Rara, has spent the past four years taking advanced science and math courses, such

as AP/DE Biology and AP Calculus, and health science courses, such as Medical Terminology. “Ever since I was a little kid, I have been captivated by the natural world, and my insatiability to explore it is something that has followed me throughout high school,” says Rara. Rara, the school’s Pres-
