At Progress Ranch, our team is committed to providing truly excellent mental health care and treatment for some of California’s most vulnerable children and families.
Since 1976, Progress Ranch, a nonprofit public benefit 501(c)(3) agency, has been dedicated to promoting the hope, health, and well-being of children by providing a nurturing environment within a supportive community. As a nonprofit mental health provider licensed by the State of California, Progress Ranch offers intensive programs for children facing significant trauma.
Our goal is for each child to experience permanency and thrive with the natural supports in their foster, adoptive, or birth family community, with families encouraged to learn and grow alongside their children.

WHO WE SERVE
Deserving of Lifelong Connections
Our children and their families are inspiring and resilient. Our children have survived abuse and neglect. They have often learned that adults cannot be trusted and have developed mental health conditions involving unsafe behaviors such as aggression and self-harming. Others appear to be doing well but are struggling with depression and anxiety as they navigate the fear of not knowing where they will live next.
The children of Progress Ranch are at a crossroads. When they come to us, their trajectory is the same as so many others who do not get the support they need. Many foster youth end up dropping out of high school, becoming homeless, and spending time in jail. This is not the future we see for the children of Progress Ranch. They deserve nurturing and the mental health treatment that will give them a chance at life in a family with a bright future!
Changing Lives
How do we give our children and families another chance at lifelong connections?
We start by building relationships. Our attachment-based programs are grounded in the understanding that the first step to healing is experiencing trust, respect, and healthy relationships. Progress Ranch professionals and volunteers see the best in each child while they begin the healing process.
This work is paid for through a combination of funding sources that includes a contract with Sacramento County Child Welfare and Mental Health to provide specialty mental health services for foster children and youth. We also work with private insurers, but count on donors to provide additional financial support to enhance programming and defray the actual costs of preparing our children for a bright future.
In our residential treatment program, we provide formal support such as academic tutoring, therapy, individual and group therapeutic activities, case management, family engagement, teaching daily living skills, and consistent structure that provides safety. We also provide intensive care coordination.
Additionally, our children often participate in activities such as horseback riding, sports, swimming, gymnastics, and community events. In short, our programming includes a combination of formal case management and “normal” childhood experiences that are both therapeutic and fun!
I am so happy and excited that we will be spending our very first Christmas together. Progress Ranch staff started the process of proving to him that not only could adults be trustworthy, but they could also keep him safe and protected.

Welcome Center
At our Temporary Shelter Care Facility (TSCF), we are dedicated to creating a warm, homelike environment where children and youth can find solace and stability during their transition periods. Located in a peaceful neighborhood in Sacramento County, our facility is designed to provide compassionate care and unwavering, trauma-informed support to children aged zero through 17 who are navigating the challenging period between placements.
Our facility offers a nurturing atmosphere that mirrors the comfort of a family home with a skilled staff committed to building healthy, therapeutic relationships with the children in our care. We prioritize safety, as well as the overall emotional and physical well-being of each child, providing round-the-clock care and supervision from skilled Mental Health and Therapeutic Care Workers. Our licensed program, designed to serve children and youth for up to 10 days, ensures that every child receives the attention and support they need, 24/7.
NextStep
NextStep offers support needed to heal from complex trauma, work with psychiatric challenges, and prepare for a successful future. Services are provided in the community and in a safe and nurturing environment where these resilient girls can begin to heal, develop essential life skills, and prepare to thrive. This program is dedicated to transforming lives and building brighter futures through comprehensive, compassionate care.
Our approach is holistic and tailored to each girl’s needs. We provide a home-like environment that fosters trust and safety, where each participant can explore their potential and learn practical skills for a successful future. Our staff is dedicated to offering preparation and ongoing support to the families who will welcome these girls into their homes, ensuring a smooth transition and continued progress after graduation from the program.

Volunteer to help with household projects
Volunteer your carpentry, plumbing, electric, or other household skills to work on home improvement projects that keep our children’s living spaces comfortable and safe. It is expensive and labor intensive to update the houses our children live in. Financial donations paired with technical expertise make it possible to provide a space where children can practice the skills they will need to be successful in a family setting.
Advocate
Advocate for important legislation to ensure mental health programming for children has needed resources and appropriate policies so our team of professionals can provide the right treatment for our children and families.
