Every year, industry influencers from all over gather in High Point, North Carolina for one of the most sought-after trade shows in home furnishings to learn about trends and innovations in furniture, accessories, art, fabric and more! Interior designers and decorators describe the High Point Market as “a must attend event.” Here’s what our team saw this spring:

Blush tones are dominating in fashion this spring and summer. This color adds just the right amount of femininity to a room and is trending in artwork, rugs, pillows and even furniture! Additionally, rich shades of blue and green tones can also be seen trending in home accessories and furnishings!

sk designers and they will tell you: lighting is a key element in any well-designed space. How we choose to light a space relates to how we view all the elements within – so taking the time to decide how to place light in a room is definitely time well spent.
Chandeliers can make a statement in a room, as long as they are placed at the right height! We’ve learned from some of the best interior designers that there are general rules for how tall and wide a lighting fixture should be for its location.
In this article, we’ll address several room settings and general rules for how to best install a chandelier.
LIGHTING TECHNIQUES & SIZING GUIDELINES DINING • The table under the fixture should serve as a guide for selecting the right fixture for your space.
• Based on an 8’ ceiling, your fixture should hang between 30-34” above the table.
Less than 72" Table width minus 12"
• To calculate the correct width, start with the width of your table and subtract 12 inches. (For example, if your table is 42 inches wide, your chandelier should not be more than 30 inches wide.)
30 - 34"
BEDROOM • Hang the chandelier over the center of the bed.
• Shorten the chain, so the bottom of the chandelier hangs seven feet above the floor.
• For ceilings higher than nine feet, consider hanging a two-tier chandelier, so the room doesn’t overpower the chandelier. 01: Inspire Chandelier, Image: Micamy Design Studio 02: Invite Chandelier, Image: Mary DeWalt Design Group
Decorating with Chandeliers
LIGHTING TECHNIQUES & SIZING GUIDELINES CONT.
27.5" Tall Fixture
11' Ceiling x 2.5" = 27.5"
FOYERS • Ensure your chandelier is not lower than 84 inches from the floor as to not interfere with the door or people passing underneath. • For higher ceilings, consider a taller chandelier or select a more linear fixture design.
• The rule of thumb is to accommodate 2.5 - 3 inches of chandelier height for each foot of ceiling height. For example, a standard 8-foot ceiling requires a chandelier that is 20-24 inches in height.

LIGHTING DESIGN TIP To redefine a relaxed beach lifestyle, try a neutral color palette, natural wood accents and shiplap paneling – which all contribute to a light and airy feeling.
Turnbury Pendants Image: Stephen Alexander Homes
Bring your home right to the oceanside with beach-inspired accents, organic furnishings and an overall relaxed feel.
THE LOOK MATERIALS
Creating the seaside look is achieved through the refined use of nautical and beach-inspired accent pieces. Focus on balancing the look through materials, including artwork and coastal textures.
An all-white color palette is ideal for a coastal-inspired home, complemented by hues that reflect sand and the water: blues and greens, or beiges and yellows.
The coastal style features furnishings and dĂŠcor created from natural and organic materials. Ratten and wicker furniture or bamboo blinds are an established theme.
THE LIGHTS SPOT THE TREND
RELAXED LIGHTING This style is all about clean sophistication with a relaxed attitude.
Weathered wood chandeliers, such as Turnbury, can add to this trend’s simple chic appeal.
ION / P400040-104
Quirky and functional, this style’s flair comes from its modern, yet retro, juxtaposition.
THE LOOK FURNISHINGS
Mid-Century Modern style furniture adds unique shapes and pops of color to a room. Designers look for statement pieces to complete the look.
Bold, geometric patterns add a quirky flair to the clean lines and functionality of this design. These patterns often have unexpected color combinations.
Mid-Century Modern homes are largely characterized by the use of glass to create a sense of connection to nature and the outdoors.
THE LIGHTS SPOT THE TREND
UNIQUE GLASS LIGHTING Designers often use unique lighting as a focal point for Mid-Century Modern interiors. These statement fixtures serve as pieces of art, but are also chosen for their fuctionality.
LIGHTING DESIGN TIP Go bold to achieve the Bohemian style! Select bold hues, bright patterns and rich textiles to make a space of your own. Try pairing a tiered chandelier adorned with beads or a pendant with intricate designs to update the room. 14
Shown: Mingle Pendants
Unique Style. Bohemian style is perfect for non-conformists who shy away from rigid design rules, as they use their own unique tastes and styles to create their space.
THE LOOK COLOR PALETTE
Incorporate vibrant colors and textiles, such as embroidered Suzani rugs. Patterned rugs and wall tapestries add character to a room.
Bold Hues & Texture
This trend brings a relaxed attitude to home design. Home accents represent a combination of colorful inspired dĂŠcor and enthusiastically eclectic pieces.
Leave no space empty, as combining different colors and patterns without a particular formula is encouraged.
THE LIGHTS SPOT THE TREND
TEXTURED LIGHTING This style is accentuated by unique lighting, such as statement pendants. Look for fixture details like textured glass and linear patterns to complete the look.
HARMONY / P3529-137 16
Sleek, spacious and simple. Incorporate clean lines, open floor plans and a neutral color palette to achieve this look.
THE LOOK MATERIALS
Overly feminine elements don’t tend to work in contemporary design; rather, the overall effect is more muted, mature and masculine. This is particularly true of the color palette.
This style is achieved through clean, uncluttered spaces. Decorate your home with framed photographs or art pieces that have been carefully chosen.
Choose sleek furniture that is relaxed and not stuffy or heavyweight to create a casual atmosphere.
THE LIGHTS SPOT THE TREND
SLEEK, SIMPLE LIGHTING The simplicity of this contemporary design applies to lighting too. Choose metal, chrome and glass fixtures that have distinct, clean lines.
Layer with recessed lighting for an effortless, orderly feel.

Pantone announced their pick for the 2017 Pantone Color of the Year – Greenery, bright and refreshing shade. Caption: Image courtesyaof Gacek Design Groupgreen featuring the Haven collection.
This yellow-green hue will soon be found in every item you can imagine, from fashion and graphic design to wedding colors and home décor. Although your house may already be festive with a different type of greenery for the summer season, we wanted to share our tips for using the new 2017 Pantone color of the year in your home and décor in celebration of the new year ahead!
“Greenery bursts forth in 2017 to provide us with the reassurance we yearn for amid a tumultuous social and political environment. Satisfying our growing desire to rejuvenate and revitalize, Greenery symbolizes the reconnection we seek with nature, one another and a larger purpose.”
One easy way to use Greenery in your home is to break out the paint! Choose a whole room or accent wall to bring color to your spaces. Mix with other natural materials, like wood, to give an organic feel. 18
- Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute.
2017 Pantone Color
BRIARWOOD / P400047-20
Bringing in new dĂŠcor is likely the simplest way to reflect the new color of the year. Choose pillows, blankets, vases and other pieces to accent the furniture and design you already have.
PLANTS What better way to incorporate Greenery than with a potted plant or two? The foliage in a dining room, living room or bedroom adds a nice green touch!
MCBEE / P560035-031
GALLEY / P500046-104
Show off some Greenery with your swimsuit, sandals or summertime outfit! This perfect splash of seasonal color can reenergize any beach trip or lakeday adventure.

Bulb designs, such as clear candelabras or Edison-style lamps, are a perfect complement to fixtures featuring mixed metals.
Clear Candelabra Clear Candelabra
In the loft pictured above, the space features exposed wood beams, an antique mirror and plenty of natural light. Progress Lighting’s stylish Spicewood pendant contributes to an industrialinspired environment where candelabra and Edison bulbs complement the overall design.
DON’T RUIN THE LOOK // White Frosted Candelabra
White frosted candelabra bulbs (pictured below) provide too much contrast for the fixture and the space – and can potentially ruin the overall look!
Round bulb styles – such as silver globes and mini lamps – are good selections for Space Age inspired chandeliers like Ion, adding softness to the overall fixture.
Mini Lamp Clear Candelabra
Customization is becoming increasingly important to both designers and homeowners as they seek to make unique statements within their personal settings. And this definitely rings true for MidCentury Modern-inspired interiors, such as the one pictured above! Our Ion chandelier features warm metal tones and is best suited to showcase round bulb styles.
DON’T RUIN THE LOOK // Candelabra LED
The Candelabra LED (shown below) features a contrasting geometric shape that can add harshness to the chandelier’s design, and should be avoided.
Vintage Amber Tubular P7826-01
Draper’s classically designed frame and finish is better suited with elongated bulbs, as it enhances the overall profile.
Decorative Incandescent Clear Candelabra
Simple lines and bold colors are prominent in the room setting above. To add a greater design effect for Drapers’ mid-century classic design, our team selected tubular style lamps to create a truly signature statement.
DON’T RUIN THE LOOK //
White Frosted Candelabra or LED Candelabra
As you can see in this example, white frosted candelabrastyle bulbs can provide an unapealing, stark appearance, especially against an Antique Bronze frame.
When designing with fixtures that feature clear glass shades, taking the bulb style and appearance into consideration is of utmost importance!
Vintage Antique Tubular P7826-01
Elongated bulbs and vintage lamps, such as those found in tubular and decorative incandescent styles, complement Evoke’s ellipticalinspired frame and give a stunning appearance through a clear glass shade. Mini Lamp
DON’T RUIN THE LOOK //
White Frosted Candelabra or CFL Candelabra
Bulb designs, such as frosted candelabras and CFLs, take away from the frame’s graceful features and could potentially ruin the intended design style.
Vintage Amber Tubular P7827-01
These vintage modern pendants are both highlighted by appropriate bulb styles to complement the overall design.
Vintage Amber P7825-01 Clear Candelabra
The right bulb is essential to highlight the mixed metal accents and Graphite frame in this open cage design. Bulb styles that offer a vintage look are best suited for this design.
DON’T RUIN THE LOOK // Frosted A-Lamp Incandescent
As you can see in the picture below, the white bulb provides too much of a contrast to the frame – and should be avoided during bulb selection.
Vintage Amber P7825-01
These industrial-inspired pendants are both highlighted by vintage bulb styles. Tubular filament and antique bulbs are great choices for a fixture such as Remix.

Designing with Bulbs
COMMON BULBS FROM PROGRESS LIGHTING With the current trend of exposed, open and vintage bulbs in decorative products, we’re educating homeowners to understand how a lamp’s shape, size and color can work to create a completely new look for each fixture – and room. Though most decorative fixtures do not come with a lamp included, Progress Lighting does offer a wide selection of bulb options for purchase.
SPOT THE TREND
VINTAGE LAMPS Designers often use vintage bulbs to create a calm and inviting atmosphere. These bulbs provide a warm glow and help convey an oldschool design, but can pair well with modern and traditional fixtures

MARCHÉ + BONITA We selected the MarchÊ chandelier for this master bathroom because of its luxurious sheer silver organza shade and Polished Nickel finish. These luxurious elements contrast nicely with the geometric tile and neutral color scheme, while creating a spa-like environment for individuals to enjoy while either starting or ending their day.

LOOKING GLASS + ERA The key to coordinating lighting throughout the home is finding a good balance. Try to avoid choosing every light fixture from one particular collection. Instead, select fixtures that feature similar metal profiles or design styles. While the Era pendant and Looking Glass chandelier are from different families, each contains elements with an overall vintage feel. Iron accents, hints of brass and mechanical details all work together to create a unique statement. progresslighting.com

LIVE & WORK IN STYLE DESIGNER TIPS Fabulous and functional home offices that inspire and enhance productivity.
oes the thought of working from home get you down? Not with these beautiful and functional home office spaces! Try some of these quick tips to create a room of your own – and also learn from our friends at Micamy Design on how they approach home office designs. TIP 1 - Get a chair that is upholstered and comfortable to sit in instead of the typical office chair. TIP 2 - I always have fresh flowers on my desk. It brightens the spirit and makes me feel not as cooped up inside. If you don’t want to worry about always getting fresh flowers, get an orchid that will last.
– Vicki Payne, DIY Expert and Host of PBS’ For Your Home TIP 3 - Make use of the walls as workspaces – try adding whiteboard or chalkboard walls. – Robin Wilson, Robin Wilson Home
TIP 4 - My favorite tip for a home office is to paint the trim dark or black. It really changes the whole feel of the room and is easy and inexpensive to do. Plus it sets the study off as something different than a bedroom. TIP 5 - If building, don’t forget the floor plugs in the home offices! It looks great to place a desk in the middle of the room but doesn’t look so nice to have to run wires from a computer out to the wall. – Becky Cantrell, West Point Homes

WALL PANELS “The wall trim details give the foyer that energetic, transitional feel. Without this feature, it would be a much more formal, traditional space.”
How do you create a productive, inspiring work space for home offices? First, we focus on the desk to provide a functional working surface and second is storage. We love designing built-ins as a backdrop of the office, which provides additional storage and surface space for printers and such. What fabrics, colors, or textures are popular to incorporate in a home office? Micamy Design Studio’s principal has been a commercial Interior Designer for over 20 years and has designed thousands of square feet for office tenants. This helps us design out of the box home offices. We like specifying reflective surfaces, which helps make the space feel larger. Continued on next page.

Q&A CONTINUED What about lighting for the home office? How do you make sure the space looks great – but there is enough light where you need it for computer time, sketching, reading, etc.? We love using a statement chandelier in the office above a stately desk. Designer tip: we usually angle the desk towards the natural light from the windows for optimal lighting. What are some ways you can quickly update a home office? Adding a built in is the quickest way to really elevate your home office, whether it’s a built in desk, or free standing shelves.
