RECREATION COMMISSION The Woodhaven Recreation Commission is an advisory board that meets on the third Monday of the month. The commission supports the City Council and the residents with the development and maintenance of quality parks and facilities; promotes stewardship of open/natural areas; creates and coordinates recreational opportunities that encourage citizen involvement; and fosters a strong sense of community while enhancing the social. cultural and physical well-being of residents and visitors of all ages.

Dear Friends, I hope that you are all doing well. We have certainly been through some trying times. But we are Warrior Strong and together as a community we have conquered what has come our way. We are moving forward to an exciting 2022 as we have so many projects that we will be completing as well as events that the City will be hosting. To our families and friends of our residents lost to COVID please visit our new Reflection Garden Covid Memorial located right next to City Hall. It is absolutely stunning with a rain curtain and the names of our residents that have passed away from COVID. If you know of a resident that has lost their life to COVID and would like to have their name added to the memorial please call Wendy at 734-3622920. I would like to thank Wayne County for providing the funding to the City of Woodhaven for this project. The Wayne County construction projects on Allen Rd. and Van Horn are in the process of finishing up for the winter with paving and signal work to continue through the month of November. While this project has been especially painful with added travel time it will result in much needed and long overdue improvements to the area. After many years of looking at that contaminated site next to Meijer, it has finally been cleaned up! Phase I of that project is completed welcoming the following businesses to our community: Citizens Bank, Smoothie King, Chick-Fil-A, Aspen Dental, AT&T, SVS Vision and a DYNFLY. The park area of this project will begin construction in the spring and include a new playscape as well as a location to have concerts and entertainment during the summer months. Woodhaven Dental just opened their doors recently which is located at West and Gudith along with Maddie Grey Boutique at Vreeland and Allen. I was so happy to see so many of our children enjoying Hollowhaven this year! Please mark your calendars for our annual tree lighting ceremony on December 3rd which will feature Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus, reindeers, an ice carver, and some fabulous fireworks. Always a great turn out by our residents with so much to do. If you have never seen winter fireworks, they are absolutely beautiful. Ninja Ninja Skillz Ninja Skillz is a Martial Arts program that targets the stages of development in a manner that adapts to their social and intellectual curiosity while at the same time building skills that set them up for success. This 30-minute class will create a space for bonding time for grown up and baby as well as meeting others with young children. We will explore infant massage techniques, baby friendly yoga poses, music and baby games in a fun and engaging environment. You will learn ways to incorporate meditation, breathing and calming techniques into your daily routines.

This 45-minute class will teach focus through breathing and relaxation techniques your child can use for self-regulating big emotions and calming. You and your child will enjoy games, songs, stories and activities in an age-appropriate setting. Get Fit with the Hits All fitness levels are invited to “GET FIT WITH THE HITS”! These easy to follow movement combinations, set to some awesome tunes, are taught in a low impact format with opportunities to ‘pick it up’ if you prefer. Zumba
Move to the rhythm of music using drum sticks, Yoga ball and a bucket. We also focus on toning using light hand weights. Class is great for all fitness levels. No experience is needed.

It is aerobic exercises performed in the shallow end of the pool, using the water as resistance. Aqua Fitness helps build cardiovascular stamina, strength, balance and flexibility. It also helps burn body fat and increase circulation to help rehab healing muscles, joints and injuries by placing resistance on your muscles yet has a fraction of the stress and strain on your body.

Woodhaven Senior Club

If you are a Woodhaven resident, and 62 or older, there is a world of opportunity waiting for you at the Community Center! You can join the Woodhaven Senior Club, which has a wide variety of activities to choose from. Bocce Ball or Cornhole, Mondays at 9:30 a.m.; Lunch Bunch outing one
Monday per month; card games every Tuesday; Bingo on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays as well as on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays; Bunco on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays; and one Friday per month is “Movie Day” at the Center too. Senior Club Business Meeting is on the 2nd Wednesday of each month, and the Senior Social catered luncheon is on the 4th Wednesday of each month. Outside of the scheduled events listed above, you can enjoy many other travel excursions and activities that change in variety each month, such as: Plays, Casino Trips, Museums, Tours, Dinners, Movies, Feather Bowling, winery visits, ice cream shops, and the list goes on, and on! We even have our own 23 passenger bus which is utilized for our excursions, and it helps keep costs down. Trips and new activities are announced at the Business Meeting each month and are open to the Club members for 2 weeks. If the trip has not filled up in those 2 weeks, it is then opened to the public. Don’t miss out on these wonderful opportunities to meet new friends and experience new adventures! DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SERVICES The mission of the City of Woodhaven Department of Public Services and Engineering is to cost effectively maintain all municipal streets, right-of-ways, parks, vehicles, equipment, grounds and facilities in a clean, safe, and aesthetically pleasing manner.
INFO TRANSFER STATION During the winter months of January 1 through March 31 the Transfer Station is only open on Saturdays 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Woodhaven I.D. is required and only open to Woodhaven residents. Materials must come from a resident’s property and work must have been performed by the resident and not a contractor. Yard waste, hazardous materials, shingles, motor oil, concrete, bricks, railroad ties are items not accepted.
R.V. STORAGE The R.V. Storage winter hours are January 1 through March 31, Monday through Friday 7:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Gate closes at 3:00 p.m. and Saturday 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The storage area offers 30 foot and 40 foot sites. At this time we have a waiting list for both size sites.
STREET SWEEPING Street sweeping will be suspended during the winter months. Your street is typically cleaned the day after your trash day. This schedule will remain the same and will resume again in the spring.
LEAF PROGRAM Our annual City Leaf Collection Program typically begins at the end of October. However, adjustments may be made depending when leaves begin to fall. City crews will come through your area two times. The leaf program is intended to help those who cannot collect leaves
easily or need assistance. If you or a family member are able to collect your leaves please do so. Leaves should be placed in yard waste bags or receptacles that are clearly marked yard waste. (Yard waste stickers available at City Hall and DPS) Please rake all leaves to the back of the curb and not onto the pavement. Raking leaves into the street can cause flooding.
YARD WASTE COLLECTION Curbside yard waste collection for 2021 will end on Thursday, December 16.
SPECIAL PICK UPS Special curbside pick-up are made by the DPS Department and are available year round to residents for materials including dirt, concrete, pools, fencing, large stock wood, and sod, etc. There is a $10 charge per cubic yard (loader bucket) with a two yard minimum per pick up. An invoice will be mailed to you. All special pick-ups must be made in advance by calling 734-675-4919. All pick-ups are done on Monday mornings.
WINTER SEASON Please be reminded when City crews are plowing local streets that all parked cars should be removed. It is against our City Ordinance to leave parked vehicles in the street during a Snow Emergency as well as pushing snow into the streets. This allows city crews to work more efficiently for the safety of our residents. Ordinance violations will be enforced during Snow Emergencies.

AUTOMATIC PAYMENT FOR WATER/SEWER BILLS The city currently has a program for having your water and sewer bills automatically deducted from your savings or checking account. The city’s website under the Water Department offers a printable Automatic Payment Sign-Up Sheet for your convenience.

CROSS CONNECTION CONTROL PROGRAM The City of Woodhaven will continue to have representatives performing inspections to our commercial and industrial customers relative to our Cross Connection Control Program. The mission of this program is to ensure the safety of the potable water supplied to our customers. These representatives will be performing inspections to identify possible crossconnection and ensure that backflow prevention assemblies are properly installed.

Winter storms can lead to power outages. Make sure you have easy access to flashlights and a battery-powered radio in case the power goes out. Stockpile warm blankets. Longer power outages can spoil the food in your refrigerator and freezer so keep a supply of nonperishable foods that can be eaten cold on hand. If the power goes out, wear several layers of clothing, (including a hat) and move around a lot to raise your body temperature.
PREVENT CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING Using a fireplace, gas heater or lanterns can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning. Ensure your safety by checking the batteries on your carbon monoxide detector and buying an updated one if you need to (should be replaced every 10 years). If using a generator, keep generator outside of house at least 15 ft. away from any opening in the house.
OPEN FLAMES AND CANDLES Any open flame should be considered a hazard and avoided. • If possible try using battery operated flameless candles as an alternative. • If an open flame is used, make sure it is stable and away from anything that could burn.
• Always extinguish an open flame before going away or to sleep. • Never place candles on or near a Christmas tree.
OPEN BURNING Woodhaven homeowners may conduct open burning with the following stipulations: • No Bonfires for any purpose or reason. • No outdoor grills of any kind on any balcony.
Burn Types Allowed: • Recreational Fire – An outdoor fire utilized to cook food for human consumption.
Open burning must adhere to the following: • Be no closer than 50 feet from any structure or 15 feet if in an approved container. • Not be utilized for waste disposal purposes. • Use fuel consisting of only charcoal or seasoned dry firewood. • Be constantly attended until fire is extinguished. • Be accompanied with water for extinguishing purposes in portable fire extinguishers, buckets, barrels or garden hoses. • Be protected from spreading fire to foliage, ground cover, landscaping materials and trees. • Size of fire can be no larger than 3 feet wide by 3 feet high. • Winds not to exceed 8 mph. • The fire must cease and be extinguished, if any type of complaint is lodged to the Woodhaven Police and/or Fire Department about the open burning.

POLICE DEPT. FINANCE, TREASURER, AND ASSESSING The City Treasurer/Finance Director is responsible for the management and coordination of the activities of the Finance Department (i.e., Accounting Department, Assessors’ Office, Purchasing Department, Tax Collections and the Treasurer’s Office).
INFO PROPERTY TAX INFORMATION All parcels in the City of Woodhaven receive two tax bills per year: • A City "Summer” tax bill is mailed around July 1st, and is payable by August 31st without penalty. • A County "Winter” tax bill is mailed around December 1st, and is payable February 14th without penalty.
If you do not receive a Summer bill by July 15th, or a Winter bill by December 15th, and do not have an escrow account, please call the office at the number above and we will mail the bill to you. Tax information can also be accessed at bsaonline.com If you elect to pay your property taxes through an escrow account, your tax bill will be sent directly to your mortgage company. If you receive your tax bill in error, please forward it to your escrow agent. For billing accuracy, it is important that you inform the City of Woodhaven of changes that may affect your tax billing status. Some examples of these changes include: • Principal residence information • Transfer of ownership
PENALTIES FOR LATE TAX PAYMENTS Penalties are assessed immediately after the due date at the following rates:
STREET SWEEPING Street sweeping will be suspended during the winter months. Your street is typically cleaned the day after your trash day. This schedule will remain the same and will resume again in the spring. • Summer Tax Bill: Beginning September 1st, a 3% penalty will be added to the unpaid School and County portion along
with a 4% penalty added to any unpaid City portion. • Winter Tax Bill: Beginning February 15th, a 3% penalty will be added to the unpaid County portion.
DELINQUENT TAXES You can pay your property taxes to our office from July through February. Any taxes that remain unpaid after February 28 must be paid at the Wayne County Treasurer's Office. Contact their office at 313-224-5990, or by visiting their website at pta.waynecounty.com, for payment arrangements.
PAYMENT OPTIONS All City of Woodhaven invoices can be paid by mail or in person at the Treasurer’s office, located at 21869 West Rd., Woodhaven, MI 48183. Payment may also be left in our dropbox, located outside City Hall next to the mail boxes. If using the drop box, please place your payment (no cash) in an envelope or attach the bill and check together. Payments placed in the drop box after City Hall has closed are considered on-time, and will not be charged penalties or interest, as long as the due date has not already passed. Postmarked envelopes will be considered as proof of timely payment. Payment can also be made by credit/debit card or by electronic check by going online. To pay online, visit bsaonline.com and follow the prompts. There’s a convenience fee for payments made by credit/debit card, or e-check. If you wish to arrange to pay your Water bill by Automatic Payment, please contact our Water Department at 734-675-4908.

HOLIDAY CRIME PREVENTION TIPS With the Holiday season approaching, here are some suggestions from our Detective Bureau to ensure a safer shopping experience. • Avoid leaving valuables in plain sight in your vehicle: purses, phones, wallets, packages. Lock the items in your trunk. • Avoid leaving purses, wallets or phones in a shopping cart unattended. • Avoid leaving packages on your porch after delivery, make arrangements with neighbors to pick up upon delivery or have the item shipped to your workplace or family member to accept. • Be aware of your surroundings. If you see suspicious activity, notify the police, security or appropriate store personal.
Beginning November 26, 2021, Uniformed Officers will be conducting frequent Holiday Patrols in and around the Businesses.
SHOP WITH A HERO Every December this event provides a holiday shopping opportunity to children in need. With generous support from local businesses and proceeds from our Woodhaven Police Charities, children’s holiday wishes are fulfilled thanks to Police Officers, Reserve Officers, Firefighters and City employees, who accompany them.
SNOW EMERGENCY An accumulation of 3 inches or more, a SNOW EMERGENCY can be declared by city officials. The snow emergency will remain in effect and is self-cancelling
in 24 hours unless extended. (Notices will be posted via Facebook, city webpage and Nixle). Any vehicles left parked on city streets, unmoved during the snow emergency can be ticketed or towed. (Refer to City ordinances 94-71 through 78). Snow and ice removed from driveways and sidewalks should not be deposited on city streets, as it impedes the safe flow of vehicle traffic. Reminder to be extra cautious when driving in and around School Zones, Bus Stops and residential areas, especially during inclement weather.

For Wayne County, the Animal Resource Funding Foundation (ARFF) has a mission to help meet these needs. By fundraising, and outreaching to other organizations, shelters and rescues; ARFF is helping countless pets get the care they require for vet bills, shelter supplies, and getting into forever homes. A woman of distinction and dedication; Mayor, and ARFF president, Dr. Patricia Odette, stands at the head of the foundation since its inception five years ago and has aided the growth of ARFF to not just Wayne County
but nationwide via fundraising and outreaching with other organizations to supply help and resources. “The biggest issue in shelters and rescues is money; being able to get animals back up to health, spayed or neutered so they can be adopted. We raise money to help animals and get them into forever homes," says Dr. Odette. ARFF raises funds by hosting online auctions, events, and fundraisers, raising approximately $100,000 annually. Often matching other fundraisers dollar for dollar. All while offering an integrity-minded approach by maintaining transparency to the public for all of their financial fundraisings. “We’ve seen a drastic drop of euthanization in shelters due to our help getting them adoption-ready and going as far as sponsoring adoptions whenever we can,” says Dr. Odette. ARFF does more than just fundraising. They provide wheelchairs for dogs, visit shelters to donate goods such as beds, assist in hosting vaccination, spay, and neuter clinics.

Out About Woodhaven High School celebrates Homecoming 2021
Woodhaven High School students celebrated homecoming with enthusiasm from September 27th through October 1st. For this year's spirit week, Warriors coordinated each day with a unique theme. Monday was Tropical Day, Tuesday Red, White & Blue Day, Wednesday Out of this World Day, Thursday Jersey Day, and keeping with the school's colors, Friday was Purple & White Day. To kick things off, Sophomores claimed the 2021 Powder Puff championship, and crowning of the Homecoming Court resulted in Aidan Kincaid as Homecoming King during the outdoor pep assembly and Klaire Schott as Homecoming Queen during half-time. and Princesses were Nathan Blaszczak and Nicolle Rozner for the Junior class, Jesus Alvarez and Klaire Wilson for Sophomores, and Bryce White and Giada Muti for the Freshmen. The rest of the Senior Court consisted of Mary Dimilia, Emma Greathead, Sophia Lustig, Klaire Schott, Jamie Sullivan, Chris Banks, Nick Diaz, Sabit Islam, Aidan Kincaid, and George LaForce. Perhaps because this year felt like a relief after the stress of 2020, community participation was at an all time high with many Woodhaven alumni attending both the homecoming game and parade, of which WBSD School Nurse, Jennifer Woodworth, was Grand Marshall.
The school wasn't only fortunate in good weather with temperatures sitting in the low 70s, but the Warriors also saw a victory against Trenton High School racking up a 44-12 win. As this year felt like a "return to normal" for students, parents, and faculty, it was an overall win for the community. “We selected Nurse Woodworth as the Grand Marshall this year because we wanted to recognize her for all of the time and effort she has put into our district over the last 18 months. Her knowledge and expertise has helped guide us during this global pandemic.” – Matthew Czajkowski, WHS Principal

The Woodhaven varsity football team took first place in the Downriver League with a 7-1 record; varsity girls volleyball took first place with a 10-0 record; boys soccer took first place with an 8-0-2 record; and both boys and girls cross country teams took first place with 2021 being the second consecutive DL Championship for the boys, third for the girls.
