Learn to foster global competence in your school(s) by co-constructing curriculum, developing teachers, and devising a strategy for systemic change.

While global education itself is not a new concept, recent world events underscore the importance of teaching students what it means to live and thrive as a global citizen, and during the past five years we have seen the rapid production of resources for supporting teachers in this endeavor.

Think Tank on Global Education invites you to be at the forefront of curriculum development and strategy to advance global competence in classrooms, schools, districts, and communities. Through the Think Tank you will generate new material and new opportunities for collaboration within a community of practitioners committed to improving the world.

PROGRAM DETAILS During this two-day institute, you will hear from educators who have been leaders and innovators in implementing global education.

You will work in groups to: devise curriculum, respond to colleagues’ work, and begin to build a network of improvement, all with the goal of preparing young people to address the world’s most pressing problems.

Past presenters have included Darla Deardorff, Research Fellow at Duke University and Veronica Boix Mansilla, Principal Investigator at Project Zero at the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES

EDUCATIONAL CO-CHAIRS

• Assess your global citizenship practice using tools from Empowering Students to Improve the World in Sixty Lessons prior to attendance — and build a strategy with other participants during the institute to advance global education throughout your school or education system • Devise curriculum which capitalizes on the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals • Explore what are called “signature pedagogies” in global education and learn how exemplary teachers design signature learning experiences • Collaborate with colleagues to design professional development activities that promote global competencies for teachers • Solicit feedback on your problems of practice and offer feedback to your colleagues through the institute’s Consultancy — an engaging protocol that allows peers to share their problems of practice • Co-create a statement of what you know, believe, and plan to do to advance global citizenship education in your education setting, thereby deepening your global education work and the spirit in which that work is widely known

Fernando Reimers is the Ford Foundation Professor of the Practice of International Education and Director of the Global Education Innovation Initiative and of the International Education Policy Masters Program at Harvard University. Professor Reimers is an expert in the field of Global Education. His research and teaching focus on understanding how to educate children and youth so they can thrive in the 21st century.
