App brings new dimension to bookings in the UAE salons have already signed up to the app, which Hamilton-Rushforth says has benefits for both the user and salons.

For the salons, it opens up a new channel for data collection and potential new clients, while its clean, simple format means that it is quick and easy for staff to use.

Furthermore, she explains that as the app doesn’t overlap or interfere with any pre-existing booking system, the possibility of double booking or miscommunication is minimal.

The owners of Professional Beauty have signed a deal to acquire Salon International, Hairdressers Journal International and the British Hairdressing Awards from Reed Business Information.

Salon International is the largest UK exhibition for the professional hairdressing industry. Hairdressers Journal International is the UK’s market-leading trade magazine, with a 133-year heritage. The brand has also run the prestigious British Hairdressing Awards since 1984.

The deal, which is due to be completed next month, will see the hairdressing magazine and events team relocate to Professional Beauty’s head office in London, UK.

Palatial Six Senses spa opens in Muscat

T

he 3,000sq m spa has opened at the Al Bustan Palace, A Ritz-Carlton Hotel, in the Omani capital. Spanning three floors, the spa features 17 treatment rooms and two consultation rooms.

Facilities at the spa include a thermal area with hammams, steam rooms, infrared saunas and ice showers, and a juice bar.

The spa also features studio space for yoga classes and the visiting practitioners that regularly hold classes and workshops as part of the Six Senses wellness initiatives, and other activities.

There is a ladies’ club on the premises featuring a gym, as well as its own fitness studio and thermal area – also complete with a hammam, steam

room, sauna, ice shower and relaxation area.

Bernhard Bohnenberger, president of Six Senses, said: "Six Senses Spa at Al Bustan Palace will take the spa experience in the Middle East to a whole new level – including glorious architecture and results-driven wellness programmes. Six Senses is thrilled to be managing this exciting project."

Top stylists appointed PB ambassadors Several local and internationally renowned hairdressers have pledged their support to the Professional Beauty GCC 2016 exhibition – signing up to become brand ambassadors.

Ambassador and international stylist Jamilla Paul will preside over the Hair Stage at the exhibition in February.

The British stylist is creative and brand director at Glamour Salons in the UAE and creator of The Jewel Bar internationally.

Jamilla has been in the industry for 35 years and has represented some huge brands artistically throughout her

career. She is a regular at New York, London and Paris Fashion Weeks and also runs a multi-award winning flagship salon in the UK, along with working for many TV Shows including Being The Boss, an MTV Beauty Show.

The Hair Stage will include presentations and inspirations from a very exciting line up of professionals both regionally and internationally.

Other star ambassadors who share Professional Beauty’s ethos of supporting industry growth and sharing ideas and inspiration include Tara Roux, Ruksher Malik and Maria Dowling.

Geraldine Howard passes away following battle with cancer

I

ndustry luminary and Aromatherapy Associates founder Geraldine Howard passed away on 7 January following a long battle with cancer.

Geraldine was regarded as a driving force in the spa and beauty industry, involved in countless industry events and associations as well as taking

Aromatherapy Associates worldwide.

She founded Aromatherapy Associates in 1985 with Sue Beechey, following extensive training in the 1970s with renowned aromatherapist Michelle Arcier.

The British brand grew to become an international success through spa and salon accounts as well as retail stores. Following her diagnosis with a type of eye cancer in 2011, Geraldine was very open about her treatment, inspiring others with her positivity.

She developed the Aromatherapy Associates Inner Strength collection based on a blend that helped her during treatment and donated 10 per cent of proceeds from sales to charity Defence Against Cancer Foundation.

Tributes for Geraldine have already flooded social media sites, with those in the industry using terms such as “inspiration”, “majestic” and “giver of peace” to describe her.

Aromatherapy Associates in the Middle East said: “Her passing was after a long and brave fight against cancer.

Throughout this time, and in all of her life, she continued to be one of the most passionate and inspirational women in the spa and wellness world.

“Her sheer presence, aura, charm and competence, had a profound effect on all those she met and her constant contribution to our daily lives will be never ending. Since having the good fortune for our paths to have crossed nearly 15 years ago, Geraldine touched my heart, my hopes and my health.

“The devotion and enthusiasm towards her spa, wellness, and beauty formulations and oils in the last 30 years, will continue to have incredible consequences upon whoever uses them.

“The Inner Strength she has past on to all of us, in her most troubled times, will live on as part of her legacy. Her dedication and friendship will never be forgotten and her dreams will continue.”

Professional Beauty GCC 2016 shows the way with 4,177 visitors The second edition of Professional Beauty GCC was a resounding success, attracting 4,177 decision-makers from the worlds of beauty hair and spa.

Attracted by the live stages, beauty conference and the adjoining Professional Spa and Wellness Conference Dubai, the exhibition was bustling with spa and salon owners, directors and managers, also eager to visit the plethora of exhibitors.

The show was a platform for many exciting new launches. Vivandi chose to introduce new brand Rock Your Hair with its exciting product range, which included Spray It Big To Dry Shampoo, A Mega Volume Root Lifter And Bombshell Big Hair Powder.

Ritz Carlton Abu Dhabi and Fairmount The Palm shine in spa awards

he Spa at the Ritz-Carlton Abu Dhabi and the Willow Stream spa at Fairmount, The Palm, Dubai, outshone the competition and were named winners in the prestigious World Spa and Wellness Awards 2016.

Taking place at Grade II-listed venue The Brewery, on February 28 in London, the awards, which included networking and a lavish dinner, were hosted by Professional Beauty London.

Expats settling in for the long haul

Figures gathered by finance comparison site compareit4me.com indicate that more expats are looking to stay in the UAE, for the long-term.

Speculation that the UAE’s expat bubble was about to burst came after last year’s survey revealed that 54 per cent of UAE residents “wouldn’t consider buying property in the UAE, as they weren’t sure how long they were going to stay”.

This year’s survey, however, shows a U-turn in thinking with just 36 per cent of ex pats saying that they would consider buying in the UAE. Jon Richards, chief executive officer at compareit4me.com, said, “In March last year all the major newspapers were reporting that more than half of expats in the UAE were considering leaving due to the high cost of living.

“Just one year later, we are happy to

announce that the number of people who are interested in buying property is on the rise. It seems attitudes are changing and fears and insecurities about the future are lifting.”

Figures are significant for the spa and beauty industry as expats make up a large proportion of the market.

It is expected that peak times will be from December to May, when the weather attracts tourists and residents enjoy the outdoor life, and that slumps will come in summer when locals, expats and tourists alike are driven away by the merciless heat. Yet our Insider statistics for 2015/16 show some exceptions to this trend.

he second Professional Spa and Wellness Convention Dubai (PSWC) was hailed as even better than the first. With 35 top international speakers, delegates were wowed by the high-level, strategic view points and reallife operational information that they received during the panels.

One such delegate, Nick Irani, director of operations and brand development, Soul Energies, commented: “The Professional Spa & Wellness Convention in Dubai was a wonderful intimate exchange of industry resources. The programme was well crafted, relevant

What was the highlight of the 2016 conference for you?

The second edition of PSWC Dubai gathered 35 stellar international speakers, who shared real numbers and real case studies in order to help spa and wellness professionals in the audience up their game. The highlight was not just the speakers, it was also in the chemistry between the speakers, chairs and delegates sharing best practices. There was a lot of talent and passion, both on stage and in the audience, as well as rich networking opportunities in the VIP Lounge.

What can we expect from 2017? Is there a specific theme or message?

It is still very “hush, hush” What I can tell you, at this stage, is that the format is going to take interaction to a whole new level. We want to facilitate engaging and fruitful networking opportunities between delegates from the Middle-East and top-notch spa and wellness professionals from around the world.

Can you tell us a little more regarding how 2017 will be different?

In 2017, we take PSWC Dubai to a more personal level. Mark Moloney, managing director of the Professional Beauty portfolio is a visionary, who always wants to innovate. Together with his team, we have found exciting ways to update and upgrade some panel formats, to create more WOW moments for delegates. The objective is to touch their minds and their hearts.

Why is it a not-to-be missed event for all those wanting to succeed in the GCC spa industry?

These days, nobody has time to waste in conferences that are not going to have a big impact. Business is ever-more competitive, general managers are way more KPI-focused, and spa and wellness professionals want to find career accelerators. It is not just "what you know” or even “who you know" that helps people climb to the top of the spa and wellness industry, the key, many say, is "who knows YOU" So to be noticed in the industry, you need to be at PSWC Dubai on February 6 and 7, 2017.
