SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA: In the final round of drama funding for the financial year, Screen Australia has announced production investment in 12 projects, including two feature films, a television series and nine multiplatform programs. Screen Australia’s support of more than $4.5 million in these projects will initiate production exceeding $25 million. “In this round of funding we are pleased to be able to support a great diversity of Australian creative talent generating compelling stories on all platforms,” said CEO of Screen Australia, Graeme Mason. “These stories promise to help shape our national consciousness, challenge us, build resilience in our kids and make us laugh, all with great Australian content. They are intended to appeal to a wide range of audiences on the many platforms that now form part of our regular media diet. Here we see the breadth of formats, genres and innovative pathways to audience that the Australian production community is capable of. “The value of Australian stories was recently reaffirmed at Cannes with Australian film sales to international territories more than doubling the quantum of sales made last year. This capped the three Australian films screened at the festival receiving standing ovations and critical acclaim; and

a prestigious award for veteran Indigenous actor David Gulpilil. Australian talent continued to shine on the world stage with Australians announced in key roles in many high-profile international productions. “It is impressive to see Australians continuing to love their local fare on the small screen, with titles such as Parer’s War, Gods of Wheat Street, Family Confidential and Love Child going from strength to strength – the final episode of Love Child was the top-rating Australian drama program in April with a combined average of 2.1 million viewers.” Investment in this round will see the team behind the award-winning film, Red Dog producer Nelson Woss, director Kriv Stenders (Kill Me Three Times) and writer Daniel Taplitz join forces again in Blue Dog, the story of the early events that led to the discovery of Red Dog and his rise to become an Australian legend. Woss Group Film Productions’ Red Dog ranks among the top 10 Australian films of all time with over $21 million at the local box office. Funding will also be allocated to Happening Films’ Downriver, a mystery film inspired by true events by multi award-winning short film director and debut feature film director and writer, Grant Scicluna. The film will be produced by Jannine Barnes.

STUTTGART GERMANY: Actress, Tilda Swinton, and the new S-Class Coupé are the focus of the international Mercedes-Benz fashion campaign spring/ summer 2015. The campaign was realised by US artist photographer and director Roe Ethridge, whose work has already been on exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMa). In addition to Ethridge, Swinton recruited her longtime companion, collaborator and designer Haider Ackermann for the styling direction of this campaign.

NEW YORK CITY, USA: American bartender, Masahiro Urushido, has been revealed as Chivas Regal’s first ever Chivas Master, winning the iconic whisky brand’s inaugural bartender competition in style at the NoMad hotel in New York.

Cameraman Andre Chemetoff directed the video shoot in Scotland with the creative team. Together they created a gripping campaign with a fast-paced film reminiscent of a classic John Buchan movie. The film and the fashion campaign were produced as part of the international fashion involvement of Mercedes-Benz for the spring/summer 2015 season, whose theme is ‘special sets the standard’. “This maxim also describes our own standards. We always want to create something extraordinary. That is the challenge we rise to every day. For the latest campaign we succeeded in capturing the extraordinary nature of two major stars in a masterful way. Tilda Swinton and the S-Class Coupé both embody individual character, personal style and unmistakable design. And both set standards in their field,” said Dr. Jens Thiemer, Head of Marketing Communications Mercedes-Benz Cars. With the latest campaign Mercedes-Benz continues its international fashion involvement. With its presence at the most important international fashion events Mercedes-Benz sends a clearly visible signal that unique style and visionary design are essential components of the brand philosophy.

Urushido was announced as the winner following a tightly-contested final which saw him impress an international panel of judges with his The New Pal cocktail to secure victory over the 12 other international competitors. The 13 finalists were all winners of the national Chivas Masters heats, which took place around the world following the competition’s launch in April this year. During the national heats, competitors were tasked with creating a new classic cocktail that would stand the test of time inspired by one of the four great cocktail eras; the Classic Age (18801920); the Post War Boom (19451965); the Disco Years (1975-1990)

and the present modern Age of Revivalism. During the two-day final, the bartenders were asked to re-create one of the cocktails that earned them a place in the final and also compete in a series of challenges designed to test their creativity, style and mixology skills. Highlights of these challenges included a milk-based cocktail pairing with Momofuku Milk Bar; a cocktail pairing with a dish from Momofuku Ssäm Bar, experimenting with carbonation with Dave Arnold; and presenting classic drinks at The Dead Rabbit Grocery and Grog. The judging panel was comprised of leading experts in the world of food and drink, including Ago Perrone, Director of Mixology at the David Collins-designed Connaught Bar in London; Sean Muldoon and Jack McGarry from The Dead Rabbit in New York; and Max Warner, Chivas Global Brand Ambassador. TAORMINA, ITALY: In the year that sees Maserati celebrate its centenary, the car manufacturer, which is enjoying strong growth, provided style and elegance to transport international stars to the red carpet for the inauguration ceremony of the sixtieth edition of the Taormina Film Festival. Claudia Cardinale, the unforgettable actress who starred in The Leopard, filmed on Sicilian soil and muse of this edition that awarded her the Taormina Arte Award, was one of the many celebrities who opened the film festival. The actress captured the attention of the onlookers when she arrived in a Maserati Quattroporte, Maserati’s luxurious fourdoor saloon flagship. Maserati also provided its Quattroporte and Ghibli models as official cars for the courtesy car service laid on for the many stars attending the screenings. Cardinale was honoured with the screening of

Gebo et l’ombre, in which she plays the leading role under the direction of Manoel De Oliveira. Other stars on the red carpet included Eva Longoria, Carmen Maura, Ben Stiller and Matt Dillon. At the end of the ceremony, the guests climbed aboard the elegant Maserati to reach the magnificent backdrop of the festival’s main venue: the stage of the picturesque ancient Greek Theatre where the preview of the opening film of the festival, Dragon Trainer 2 in 3D, was screened in the presence of its director and screenwriter Dean DeBlois. Produced by Dreamworks, the second thrilling chapter of the epic animation trilogy will be distributed worldwide by Twentieth Century Fox five years after the first showing of Dragon Trainer, which was nominated for the Oscar of the Best Animated Feature and drew almost $500 million at box offices the world over.

BRISBANE, AUSTRALIA: Written, recorded, and produced independently, Weightless is the first single from Brisbane electronic-indie-pop duo Grand Pavilion. Consisting of members Tom Hunt and Stu McNair, Grand Pavilion recorded their debut EP Secrets (out later this year) in two phases – the instrumentals, while in their home town of Brisbane, and the vocals, while travelling and working in the UK in late 2013. Combining their love of textures, layered samples and rhythms, Hunt and McNair incorporate real instruments into their electronic blend to create a transformative and immersive sound. The first single off the Secrets EP, Weightless is a slow building reflection of youthful innocence, and the freedom that comes with no responsibilities. Musically channelling the lightness and sound of summer, and lyrically contemplating ideas of not wanting to grow up, and not wanting to let go, Weightless talks about the nostalgia of being carefree growing up in the central coast town of Byron Bay and the relationships which grew from there. www.grandpavilionofficial.com

MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA: Now close to selling out at the Sydney Opera House, Bangarra Dance Theatre’s new show Patyegarang is on its way to Melbourne for a limited season of ten performances. Patyegarang will be presented at Arts Centre Melbourne, Playhouse from August 28 to September 6, 2014. Celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2014, Bangarra Dance Theatre is Australia’s premier national Indigenous performing arts company. Under the artistic direction of Stephen Page, Bangarra has strived to maintain the cultural integrity and spirit of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander tradition, combining it with contemporary expressions of stories, dance and music. Bangarra creates dynamic, moving theatrical experiences and delivers these experiences to audiences across Australia and around the world. WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

“The story of Patyegarang is one of the few positive encounters during Australia’s first contact, one that should be celebrated and remembered, said Stephen Page. “It is special to see how audiences are embracing this story, just like we embraced it during our rehearsals. I look forward to sharing this performance with Melbournians – an audience close to Bangarra’s heart.” Patyegarang is a gift of Australian history in a remarkable dance experience about first contact, bringing to the stage the story of a young Eora woman who befriended one of the first settlers, Lieutenant William Dawes, gifting him her culture and language. While this cultural exchange took place more than 200 years ago, it remains a timeless story about human curiosity, respect and learning. Patyegarang will also be performed in Canberra, Perth and Brisbane before arriving in Melbourne.

BOOKINGS Arts Centre Melbourne, August 28 – September 6 2014. Bookings: www.artscentremelbourne.com.au p 136 246. Ticket prices: $29 $89 plus transaction fees. For even more thrills, pushing the Sport button on the dashboard increases throttle response and adds weight to the steering. Another new feature is the segment-first seven-inch TFT digital instrument display, developed in collaboration with Italian auto manufacturer Magneti Marelli, which seamlessly transforms into a race-spec computer at the push of a button, offering cornering g-force and a digital boost gauge. The 595 Turismo captures the essence of both style and speed. It

offers Abarth leather seats, Abarth diamond-finish 10-spoke 17-inch alloy wheels with 205/40 R17 tyres, cross drilled and self-ventilating front brake discs and Koni front suspension with FSD, which adjust to road conditions, as standard. The 595 Competizione hardtop and convertible steps up to a more race-focussed specification, with Fabric Abarth Corsa by Sabelt bucket seats, Abarth diamond-finish five-spoke 17-inch alloy wheels with anthracite background and 205/40 R17 tyres and cross drilled and selfventilating front brake discs. The Abarth 595 Competizione’s Dual Mode ‘Record Monza’ exhaust opens at 4,000rpm, transforming the already head-turning exhaust into something otherworldly while shifting the car’s power curve. The 595 sips just 5.4-l/100km with a manual transmission and 5.3-l/100km with the Abarth Dualogic transmission. Eleven colours are available on the Competizione, with a further six bi-colour designs exclusive to the Turismo. Introducing the Abarth 595 range, Fiat Chrysler Australia President & CEO, Veronica Johns, said: “The evolution of Abarth continues with two thrill-a-minute editions guaranteed to put a smile on owner’s faces. “The 595 Competizione and Turismo are the most exhilarating Abarth models to date, offering all the fun, style and excitement you’d expect from a pure Italian hot hatch.”

POKOLBIN, AUSTRALIA: The 2014 International Wine Challenge in London has awarded the James Rodgers Trophy for the Best Wine in its First Year of Production to Leogate Estate’s 2011 ‘The Basin’ Reserve Shiraz (RRP $115). When accepting the award in person at the gala dinner, Bill and Vicki Widin attributed the Trophy both to Len Evans’ attention to detail in establishing Brokenback Vineyard, and to Mark Woods’ superior winemaking skills. The Basin had earlier also been awarded the Trophy for the best Hunter Valley Red Wine. Brokenback Vineyard in Pokolbin was one of Len Evans’ Rothbury Syndicate vineyards planted in the 1960s. The Shiraz vines all original, and are situated on a low hill with direct east and west facing blocks. A substantial section of the east facing blocks is known locally as The Basin and forms somewhat of a natural amphitheatre. The vines, protected from much of the Hunter Valley late afternoon summer sun, have developed over the years rather differently from the vines on the west facing blocks -

primarily by being more luxuriant in both vine size and canopy. This difference in the vines is entirely environmental, and results in a slightly different berry taste. Leogate Estate’s winemaker, Mark Woods, noticed this difference and for the 2011 harvest decided to keep separate the parcels he selected from each east and west section to be the 2011 Shiraz Reserve wines, naming the two parcels The Basin and Western Slopes. The London judges described the 2011 The Basin as, “Refined, cool Shiraz style with bright fruit, savoury notes, supple tannins and great drinkability. Lovely freshness on the palate, which lifts and lengthens the overall flavour”. The judges also described the Western Slopes, (Silver Medal), as, “Sweet, ripe berries and vanilla on the nose. Peppery, roasted flavours with a concentrated great length and well balanced tannins”. James Halliday, in his 2014 Australian Wine Companion, gave the 2011 The Basin 96 points and a cellaring date of 2050, and gave the 2011 Western Slopes 97 points and a cellaring date of 2060.

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA: Adam Brand will release his tenth studio album, the soulful My Side Of The Street on August 8, 2014. The guitar-heavy, soaring rock-tinged lead single, ‘What Your Love Looks Like’ captures Brand in his element, as he sings “I want to close my eyes, and see what your love looks like”, drawing listeners in as a love-fuelled narrative unfolds. “They say you get your whole life to write and record your first album, in some respect I feel I have been waiting my entire life to release this album”, said Adam. “I threw the rule book out the window and said everything I wanted to say, exactly the way I wanted to say it.” Adam will tour the LP across Australia this September and October. www.adambrand.com.au WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

GDYNIA, POLAND: Britain’s Paul Bonhomme pulled out the stops to win the Red Bull Air Race World Championship’s Qualifying session in front of more than 100,000 Polish spectators with a track record time of 1:10.980. The defending champion bounced back in style from a sobering defeat in the last stop in Putrajaya, Malaysia to win his first Qualifying this year in the high speed, low altitude racing with a clutch performance on a difficult track set up in the Baltic

Sea just off Gdynia’s bustling beaches. Nigel Lamb of Britain, who won the last race in Malaysia, came in a close second in the Qualifying ahead of Sunday’s first-ever race in Poland with a time of 1:11.423 on a thrilling track made especially challenging with a 270-degree ‘Marina Wall’ turn while championship leader, Hannes Arch, of Austria took third, stopping the clock in 1:11.490. “It’s a brilliant track,” said Bonhomme, who saw his run of 15 straight podiums snapped in Malaysia when he ended up fifth due to engine troubles. “If every track were like this it would be a dream. You’ve got to actually put some thought into flying this track. It’s really a thinking pilot’s track.” It was another riveting Qualifying session with Lamb, Arch and Pete McLeod of Canada, who claimed fourth (1:12.068), all pushing the pace in an electrifying duel with hopes of taking the top spot for Sunday’s race in Gydnia. Germany’s Matthias Dolderer (1:12.252) and Australia’s Matt Hall (1:12.370) also showed flashes of brilliance on the difficult Gdynia track but ended up back in fifth and sixth place, respectively. Both Dolderer and Hall said they are confident they are still within striking range of getting on the podium.

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA: Steve Smyth’s second Ivy League Records release is the heartfelt track Written Or Spoken. The song follows the rollicking Shake It, both lifted from his Ivy League debut album, Exits, which will be released on September 5. Hailing from the New South Wales south coast, Smyth’s hazy, itinerant life has taken him across North America, Europe and through Asia, never pausing long enough to take root, all the time registering experiences in his songs. Smyth is currently packing his bags for an extensive month long run of European shows Penned amongst the clutter of a house boat kitchen floating into the centre of London, Written Or Spoken is a sweet ode to a relationship bruised by distance. This time around the pendulum swings away from the rawness of Shake It, as Smyth delivers his trademark arresting vocal beauty. The track was recorded with the album, Exits, in Echo Park, near the Hollywood Hills, drawing upon the services of Joey Waronker on drums (Atoms For Peace, Thom Yorke, Beck) and Gus Seyffert on bass (The Black Keys, Norah Jones). From the streets of Paris to touring alongside the likes of The Killers, Angus and Julia Stone, Lanie Lane and Kim Churchill, Smyth has proven time and time again to be devastating in the live setting - a voice churned up in bourbon-soaked Louisiana gravel that soars to the heavens at times with its sweetness. SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA: Frontier Touring has announced Brooklynbased alt-rock band, American Authors, will return to Australia and visit New Zealand to play shows in Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney and Auckland. Band members Zac Barnett, James Adam Shelley, Dave Rublin and Matt Sanchez left the Berklee College of Music in Boston where they met to take their alt-rock, fourpart harmonies and infectious pop sensibilities to the Big Apple as American Authors. Their songwriting comes from the diversity that the four members bring to the table. “We’re the authors of our lives, creating music from what we’ve lived, from what we hope for, from what we feel. Every day is different and like everyone, our emotions change according to our personal highs and lows and by the challenges or triumphs that affect all of us - we’re not afraid to be goofy one day and serious the next. We just want to be true to ourselves and share our stories for as long WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

as people are willing to listen”, said lead vocalist, Zac Barnett . American Authors was in Australia for a brief visit earlier this year in support of the release of their debut album Oh, What A Life (out now through Universal), which reached #3 on the Billboard Top Rock Albums Chart and #15 in the Billboard 200. The band performed a series of exclusive events whilst they were here including a concert at iconic Luna Park for 300 lucky fans. Debut single Best Day Of My Life proved to be a massive international breakthrough for the band, gaining worldwide success as it featured on various advertising campaigns around the world, including Hyundai in the UK and France, Telecom in New Zealand as well as for US retail home improvement giant Lowe’s which aired during the Superbowl. The song also appeared on the trailer for some of this year’s cinematic releases including Delivery Man and The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty. In Australia the track took

a similar trajectory after being picked up by local liquor chain BWS for one of their commercials, landing in the top 15 on the radio airplay chart, top 10 on the iTunes singles chart and achieving certified platinum single sales. The hit was also performed on Glee earlier this year during their ‘New New York’ episode as well as being invited on Ellen to perform the anthemic tune. The track is now closing in on 23 million views on YouTube and a whopping 53 million plays on Spotify. Following the success of this infectious hit single, American Authors released their equally catchy second single Believer. Last year American Authors also boosted their live presence, having supported the likes of OneRepublic and The Script to being one of the most highly anticipated bands to play at SXSW in Austin, Texas earlier this year, leading to a number of sold out headline shows in the US and UK/ Europe.

BRISBANE, AUSTRALIA: Mia Dyson has announced her first national tour for the album Idyllwild, and unveiled the LP’s second single, also titled Idyllwild. Focusing its attention prominently on the grey-area between youth and fully fledged adulthood, Idyllwild follows on from Dyson’s acclaimed album The Moment, which led to an ARIA nomination and complete reinvention of her career. From her 2003 debut Cold Water Dyson impressed audiences around the country with her first three albums leading to national airplay via triple j and opening slots for the likes of Bonnie Raitt, Eric Clapton, Chris Isaak, Joe Cocker, Stevie Nicks and Donavon Frankenreiter. The release of Idyllwild’s title track as the album’s second single takes the new album’s narrative forward even further, tipping its hat to a small town outside of Los Angeles where Dyson spent an unconventional honeymoon. “I got hitched not that long ago at the Los Angeles county courthouse and afterwards, we found ourselves driving up into the mountains to this little town called Idyllwild, sort of laying our decision out there and celebrating in the natural world.” WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA: Comeback Kid are a staple of the hardcore community. It’s been 11 years since their debut album and with the release of their fifth record, Die Knowing, earlier in 2014, the Canadian quintet are gearing up to bring their new stuff back to Australia this October for their ever growing legion of fans. Taking influence from their contemporaries in the scene as well as the ‘90s skater punks and the more

melodic acts out there, Comeback Kid have created a sound all their own within the often times cookie cutter hardcore genre. Experimenting with and incorporating new musical elements from beyond the confines of modern hardcore has stood them apart from everyone else. Also appearing on the bill are Rotting Out, who create some of the most energetic and captivating punk/hardcore being played today. True LA natives, who were raised on a diet of Suicidal Tendencies and Pennywise and perfectly capture the soundtrack to skating, mayhem, hanging with friends and getting into trouble. Joining CBK and Rotting Out will be Sydney’s Relentless. The band have defined themselves as one of the most straight up, no nonsense hardcore bands in the country, with comparisons to Madball and Sick Of It All. Having risen to the top locally, they have made solid inroads into South East Asia of late and are planning to spread their trademark style across Europe and the US in the near future. With ten dates on the tour, everyone around the country has the opportunity to catch three bands in their prime. Supports will be announced soon.

The track was also nominated for Song of the Year and Best Female Pop Vocal at the 51st Grammy Awards. Bareilles’ sophomore album Kaleidoscope Heart (Epic Records), which she released in 2010, went straight to number one on the Billboard 200. The lead single King of Anything once again earned her a Grammy nomination for Best Female Vocal Performance and certified platinum (1,000,000-plus album sales) by the Recording Industry Association of America. I found it really interesting that Johnny Di Francesco went to university to study something but chucked it in to follow his dream of something completely different. This seems to happen a lot, look at Andrew O’Keefe, son of a judge, and became a lawyer himself before pursuing his dream career on television, and Andy Lee of radio fame, who studied commerce but is now a comedian and radio presenter. I admire the people who have the courage to do this sort of thing. If you have eaten at 400 Gradi you will agree that Johnny Di Francesco made the right decision! Just booked my trip to New Orleans for Mardi Gras next year! You are Aussies, right? Yet you have been to Mardi Gras in my country (USA) but I haven’t. Not to be outdone by an Aussie, my trip is booked. Funny how it took an Aussie’s review of this event to make me see the light! Collin Thiroul Williamsville, New York, USA.

PLEASURE AND PAIN

I’m a little pissed with you guys - I opened the last edition and saw the gorgeous Charlene Amoia on the cover looking super hot and I let out a loud ‘Oh my God!’, which would have been fine except my girlfriend came running over to see what was going on. I copped an earful and a clip over the head. Thanks a lot! Jeff Watson North Ryde, New South Wales, AUSTRALIA.

Ed – I feel your pain Jeff but l am sure you’ll agree it was a small price to pay. We’ve great response to all of Charlene’s photographs. She certainly is a talented and beautiful woman.

LOVING SOMMERTIME

I am hooked on Amy Sommer’s column. Every month she writes things that are so real. This month’s one has been causing dilemma in my house for a while now, not Amy’s column, but her story about delayed gratification for children.

I don’t understand why people are treating their young children to things that (in my most humble opinion) should be kept for when they are much older. High quality restaurants for young children’s birthdays? How ridiculous! Manicure and pedicure sessions for toddlers? Again, how ridiculous? Have the parents who do this for their children ever wondered what they will do for them when they are older? If you treat your 12 year old to a birthday at a high end restaurant and your toddler to a pamper session, exactly what will you give them when they are 15 or 16? Let children be children. Treat them age appropriately. This whole thing is getting completely out of hand. Eleanor Atkins Franklin, Missouri, USA.

Ed – I agree with you 100 percent Eleanor, let children be children. GOT SOMETHING TO SAY? Send prodijee an email at goingpostal@prodijee.com

TELEVISION OPERATORS HAVE always been notorious for over-rating the importance of their programs, but in Australia right now there seems to be an even bigger occurrence of this annoying marketing ploy. Never in the history of Australian television has been so many ‘Un-miss-able’, ‘Must See TV’, and ‘Television Events’, which wouldn’t be a problem if it were true. But so many of these claims apply to shows such as Home and Away, The Bachelor Australia, The Voice Kids and, would you believe, even Studio 10. Far from being un-missable, there’s any number of activities I’d find more pleasant than watching these shows. For example, having your fingernails ripped out is far more enjoyable than watching the departure of a ‘Riverboy’ from Home and Away, Smashing my finger with a hammer on a cold day is less excruciating than watching precocious children and their pushy parents on The Voice Kids, and I suspect, forcing Guantanamo Bay prisoners to watch episodes of Studio Ten would be a more effective form of torture than waterboarding. These imperatives are now so common they must surely be ineffective – a case of crying wolf far too many times. And you have to question how un-miss-able any program is these days, given television’s propensity to endless repeat these programs on secondary and tertiary digital channels, and make them available for viewing on computer, tablets and phones. Is it any wonder modern TV is in trouble, with falling revenues and audiences?

NOT QUITE A chance meeting, but when two creative ladies get together amazing things can happen. Annemieke Woodbridge (below, right), website designer and world traveler, wanted someone amazing to cater for her wedding, that’s when, after much research, she came across Jan Woods (right). Jan, a self-professed tree-hugger and very down to earth person had been a chef for more than 30 years. Her experience and expertise were well known and this was exactly the sort of person Annemieke was looking for. The wedding was to be held in a park, under a bridge for 120 guests, this was going to be no mean feat to arrange, especially as there were water restrictions at the time which meant water had to be bought in by bottles for washing up and every piece of kitchen equipment had to be trucked in! After many coffee dates and discussions, the mammoth task, all coordinated by the two girls, was then made even more challenging when Annemieke and her fiancé were transferred to Dubai, prior to the actual event date. To cut a long story short, the wedding was arranged via many emails over the next few months resulting in the bride and groom coming back to Australia for their lavish event. Jan’s down to earth nature and exquisite food ensured that the night flowed beautifully and that everyone had a wonderful time eating delicious food. The girls remained in contact and a strong friendship formed, they decided to join forces and each put their individual talents together and– Tummies & Tastebuds is the result. This beautiful book is as down-to-earth and stylish as the chef behind the recipes herself. It is a collection of delightful recipes for the entire family. FRUSTRATED BY THE lack of plus size clothing that is stylish and on-trend, Sydney’s Mary Berkopec decided to quit her day job as a marketing professional and launch her own label, Meri by Design. The debut collection was unveiled at Melbourne’s Curvy Couture Roadshow and snapped up instantly by celebrity plus size model, Hayley Hasselhoff, daughter of David Hasselhoff. With the average Australian woman being size 16, Meri by Design creates flattering shapes to enhance and embrace the beauty of women sized 14-24. Meri’s philosophy is to honour feminine curves by creating clothes that make women feel confident and stylish. “In a world where being labelled ‘plus size’ is particularly daunting, I want to celebrate being curvy and sophisticated with my designs. I want women to be able to feel confident, comfortable and creative in the clothes that they wear, no matter their size,” said Mary. Using the highest quality fabrics and textures, the latest range aims to emphasize the natural silhouette of curvy Australian women. Buy online at: www.meri.com.au

THE IMPORTANCE OF CORE STRENGTH FOR OVERALL HEALTH By Jason T Smith, Physiotherapist, Author of Get Yourself Back In Motion and Founder of the Back In Motion Health Group NO MATTER WHAT your health and fitness goals are, you will always hear a lot about the ‘core’, which put simply, includes the deep muscles in the length of the trunk and torso. Most functional movements are highly dependent on the core, therefore it is fundamental to dial up your core strength for overall health. Core stability is the attribute that enables you to control many of the movements associated with the static and dynamic postures you adopt. Without adequate strength and control in the mid-section of your spine and lower back, it is very difficult for the body to carry load, quickly swing its limbs and prevent injury. Stability around your central spine is fundamental in supporting correct posture, transferring strength and moving in a way that isn’t going to damage your muscles, ligaments or joints. Core stability can be improved by actively exercising the deep, small stabilising muscles

beneath the lower back. Every time we move, even the smallest movement of inhaling a breath, these muscles activate. They form a muscular brace around your spine, holding it stable for protection without inhibiting effective movement. In a healthy spine, core musculature switches on when it’s needed most, however when fatigue or injury occurs, these muscles can progressively lose control and weaken. If the protective muscular band is no longer holding tight, unsafe movement may occur causing tissue inflammation and degeneration. Other body parts may become involved to overcompensate for the loss of core stability, and this may further implicate the complexity of pain and potential negative health outcomes. It is important not to confuse your core stabilising muscles with the highly sought after sixpack! Well-conditioned external abdominal muscles add strength to movement but don’t contribute to core control and stability. This isn’t to say that the following exercises won’t help you in gaining a six-pack, but that is not the sole purpose of these recommended exercises. HERE ARE SOME HELPFUL TIPS TO DIAL UP YOUR CORE STRENGTH FOR OPTIMAL HEALTH: Simple exercises to stabilise your core and strengthen your antigravity muscles will significantly improve your static positioning and dynamic movement. A fun and proven way to improve your posture and stimulate your core stabilising muscles is to practise ‘dynamic sitting’ with a physio ball (otherwise known as a Swiss, orb, fitness or exercise ball). Sitting on a Physio Ball creates a dynamic environment, which forces the body to make continuous adjustments to posture, developing increased strength and control along the way.

Other easy ways that you can use your physio ball for improving your core strength are: • Marching: Sit on your physio ball with your spine neutral and knees at 90 degrees. It is important to draw in your abdominal muscles and maintain this position throughout the exercise. Begin by slowly raising your right knee into hip flexion and hold for up to five seconds, then bring the knee back down to starting position. Repeat on the opposite side and continue repeating on alternate sides. • Crunches: Start by having your hips just off the physio ball and feet shoulder width apart, with your hands placed across your chest. Draw in abdominal muscles and maintain, crunch forward and lift your shoulder blades off the ball. Hold at the top for up to two seconds and then lower back down to starting position. Repeat. • Supine Bridge: Lie on the ground facing upward, heels resting on top of the physio ball, knees straight and arms at your sides. Use your lumbar and gluteal muscles to slowly lift your lower back off the floor until your trunk is parallel to your thighs. Hold for up to five seconds and then slowly return to starting position. Repeat. www.backinmotion.com.au

roadtest OSiS+ SESSION LABEL SILK SHINE CREAM I LOVE TO give credit where credit is due, and I have found a product that is my hero. Hero is a term that I don’t usually like to use, I find that most products have some great qualities, but it’s rare that I find one that is not only brilliant for its intended purpose, but also brilliant for other purposes. The OSiS+ Session Label Silk Shine Cream was promoted to me as a wonderful solution to give your hair a silky shiny finish without overburdening your style – TRUE – it does give great shine and most definitely does not weigh your hair down – and, as an added bonus, you only need a very small amount of product to determine if it lives up to the claims.

my hair. I wake up, brush my hair and it looks as fabulous as it did the previous day when I styled it. Now, here is the biggest bonus for me. My fine hair is also very curly. I spend ages drying it straight only to find (pre OSiS+ Session Label Silk Shine Cream) that it reverts to its curls at the first sign of damp air and frizzes at the drop of a hat.

“Soft curls are very difficult to sleep on. Wake up the next day and they are disastrous, only having to be either wet or washed again. Now, I can sleep on my curls, run my fingers through my hair in the morning and again, they look as perfect as the day before” But this product is also great for styling. Work a small amount through your hair before you pull out your hairdryer, style as desired, and you will find that your hair remains in its style for ages – without frizz! No frizz is a huge bonus for me as I have a lot of very fine hair that humidity seems to make a b-line for, turning me into some kind of wild-woman looking creature. I have found that using this product, I have been able to keep the same style for two days – never heard of for WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

There are times that I would love to leave my hair naturally curly, but again, damp air and humidity equal frizz for me. Not now! After applying a small amount of this product, I can leave my hair form into its soft natural curls – damp air doesn’t affect it – no frizz. Not only that. Soft curls are very difficult to sleep on. Wake up the next day and they are disastrous, only having to be either wet or washed again. Now, I can sleep on my curls, run my fingers through my hair in the

morning and again, they look as perfect as the day before. Hero and brilliant are strong words, but they are words that I firmly believe apply to this product by Schwarzkopf Professional – get to your salon and get some now – I can highly recommend it.

INDOLA INNOVA VOLUME AND RESTRUCTURE SPRAY/HAIR THICKENING ELIXIER VOLUME AND RESTRUCTURE SPRAY The immediate bonus of this spray is that it’s heat protectant, and it is light enough to spray on roots without weighing your hair down. This spray gives volume if usewd before blow drying and prevents flyaways because of the light hold. I couldn’t visibly notice any effect of the hydrating factors, however it helps prevent further damage, which is great. I noticed most difference on the roots, not so much on the lengths of my hair, but it also helped give any backcombing something to hold onto and stay. This is a lovely scented product which lingers on the hair - definitely worth $18.95 HAIRTHICKENING ELIXIER Straight away I could tell this product made a difference. It’s

almost a gel-like consistency and adds thickness and body to fine hair. It can leave ends feeling slightly dry but applying a small, pea-sized amount from mid-length up definitely makes an instant difference to the hair, yet it doesn’t make the finest of hair feel weighed down at all. This elixier works best when styling hair straight as it can weigh down the curl preventing hold. It also has that beautiful scent that lingers. Definitely a styling product needed

KÉRASTASE CRISTALLISTE HAIR CARE KÉRASTASE CRISTALLISTE CRISTAL SCULPT DUAL GLOSS SERUM One of the first things I noticed about the Kérastase serum is that it is part of a new range aimed at managing long hair. I do not have extremely long hair, but it’s definitely not short. The serum contains a liquid light complex with one of the many ingredients being an aloe illuminator. Aloe is a natural and powerful moisturiser and combined with the anti-dry polymers, which focus on repairing the hair cuticle, I was looking forward to super shiny and moisturised hair. Having used this product for three weeks now, I can’t honestly say that I have noticed any extra shine or hydration. Maybe the product takes longer than this to show any benefits, but for me, at $45.00 for 30ml, I would hope for the product to work a bit quicker than this. I did, however, find that the serum is great as a styling product before blow drying to maintain the smoothness and prevent frizz. The company states that because the product is so lightweight, it can be applied from roots. My hair is very fine and tends to get weighed down easily so I didn’t risk it, only using it on the ends, but if you have the kind of hair that can hold a little more product this serum would really good. Overall, the serum is nice for smoothing and keeping frizz away but I didn’t notice any of the other benefits at all. Given the high price and the reputation Kérastase, this is probably not a product that I would repurchase or recommend. It really is simply a styling product and no more. Everyone’s hair is different but for mine, I didn’t notice a difference. It did, however, smell really nice and fresh, which is always a plus. KÉRASTASE CRISTALLISTE LUMINOUS PERFECTING MASQUE WWW.PRODIJEE.COM WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

by Holly SCAUNICH

I love hair masks. I think they are great, especially if you have dry hair as they tend to leave your hair feeling soft and manageable. Straight away I enjoyed the fact that this was a light weight formula. Many masks tend to be thick creams which, when applied

At the cost of $60, I would say that there are many more hydrating products on the market that would have more of an impact, for similar to less money, but I agree that 200ml is a decent sized amount for a hair mask, giving plenty of uses. As with the serum, the Masque has a lovely clean scent, which I found lingered on my hair - a nice added bonus – and I do believe the product statement of it being nourishing for your hair. The masque is definitely the leader in the Kérastase Cristalliste range, but given the price you may find yourself expecting more than what the product is able to give.

“My hair is very fine and tends to get weighed down easily so I didn’t risk it, only using it on the ends, but if you have the kind of hair that can hold a little more product this serum would really good” near the roots, can weigh the hair down - not this one! Its gel-cream formula has a shimmery look to it, which I thought would help to add shine, unfortunately, similar to the serum, the shine factor didn’t really come through for me. This masque, which contains Candelilla Cera and Ceramide, gives a real hydration boost and is great to use after your conditioner for extra softness and silkiness.

MAX FACTOR X LIPFINITY LIP COLOUR MAKEUP ARTISTS LIKE me are constantly on the search for that perfect lip colour that doesn’t need constant annoying touch-ups. Armed with the new Max Factor Lipfinity you can have that glamorous finish you love with its lighter, brighter, bolder new formula. This product is a smart, two-step application that creates a stunningly glamorous long lasting colour. Step 1 - Apply colour to clean lips. Keep lips apart for 60 seconds or until dry. Step 2 - Apply clear moisturizing top coat for moisture and shine. Keep your look fresh by re-applying throughout the day. The lip paint has a similar consistency to a lip lacquer and goes on quite opaque with one coat. It is much like a lip stain, so you only need one coat. The moisturizing lip gloss looks like a lipstick and is surprisingly very moisturizing, it adds a perfect glossy effect to the colour. Max Factor’s claim that the product has full-day, long staying power are very true. I put it on at 8am and this bad boy was still on at 7pm that night. You will, however, need to reapply the gloss every three hours or so, but the colour will remain on your lips for approximately 24 hours or until you remove it with an oilbased makeup remover. The lip stain can be drying due to the active ingredients that make it long lasting, so just make sure you have the gloss handy and make sure you properly moisturize your lips with a balm before applying this product. Unlike other long-wear lipsticks, which can appear dry and dull on the lips, Max Factor Lipfinity delivers long-lasting colour that feels soft and lightweight all day long, whilst still delivering an alluring shine and

TOYOTA’S KLUGER HAS been a favourite with Australian families since it was first released, and with an expanded array of standard features, a host of in-cabin technologies, increased cargo capacity, and very sharp pricing, Kluger is in no danger of alienating its local followers any time soon. This third-generation Kluger is produced in three variants – GX, GXL and Grande. All models seat seven occupants and each variant is available in either two-wheel-drive or all-wheel drive. Prices start at $40,990 for the 2WD GX ($2,200 less than the previous-model equivalent and tops out at $67,990 for the AWD Grande (AWD is $4,000 across the range, down $500). Toyota Service Advantage remains at $170 for each of the first six scheduled services. External styling is more aggressive, the sleek and strong design is characterised by a bold Toyota family grille, deeply WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

chiselled fenders, bold wheel arches, wrap around head and taillights, and revised front and rear overhangs. Included on the Grande are 19-inch wheels (up from 18-inch on the GXL) and projector LED headlamps with Auto High Beam. Both the GXL and Grande gain standard roof racks. The body is slightly longer and wider than the model it replaces, though the height remains the same. Improved design, along with a new space-efficient double-wishbone rear suspension, and the ability to move all rear two rows of seats forward increases interior space, well above what the new external dimensions suggest. As a result, the third row is easier to access, the two-seat bench is wider and offers more comfort, while the luggage area behind is longer, deeper and wider, expanding capacity by one-third. Smart storage solutions include an under-dash tray shaped to prevent

items sliding out and a 24.5-litre rolltop centre console that doubles as an armrest and is big enough to store a large handbag. The décor is attractively designed using premium materials. Softtouch surfaces and bright accents make Kluger’s interior a nice place to be. All variants gain cruise control, airconditioning, six-speaker display audio with Toyota Link multimedia and multiinformation display. Grande adds tilt-and-slide moon-roof, ventilated front seats, eight-inch display audio with navigation and DAB+ digital radio, second-row sunshades, nine-inch rear-seat entertainment system with Blu-ray player, power-operated rear door with glass hatch, all automatic up/ down windows, woodgrain-look pattern highlights, full-colour 4.2-inch multiinformation display, heated exterior mirrors with memory function, twoposition memory for driver’s seat and Active Cruise Control.

REVIEW: DARREN HOUSE Power comes from a 3.5-litre V6 engine, backed by a new six-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission with selectable manual sequential shifting and artificial intelligence that provides engine braking on downhill runs and minimises gear hunting. Fuel economy has been improved while maintaining power output at more than 200kW. New technology, along with steering and suspension that underwent local development to suit the demands of Australian drivers and local conditions, results in a driving experience that is certainly more akin to a Camry than a Land Cruiser. I was particularly impressed with Kluger’s sharp turn-in (quicker electric power steering is one of the local dynamic developments) and its ability to soak up the potholes that permeate our poorly maintained roads. Power is adequate, especially considering Kluger’s weight, while the transmission is a delight. The brakes were impressive, providing a good sense of security, important at any time but even more so when the vehicle is

used for family transport. But it’s the area of NVH that most impresses - ride quality and low noise is a Kluger highlight, and will ensure you can hear your kids’ cries of “Are we there yet” with unprecedented clarity. Every Kluger has a reversing camera, rear parking sensors, seven airbags and front fog lamps, daytime running lamps, VSC and Traction Control, Hill-start Assist Control and seat-belt reminders for first and second-row seats. Grande also gains Toyota’s Pre-collision Safety System and Active Cruise Control, which utilise a grillemounted radar. With plenty of value, sharp looks and impressive dynamics, Kluger is certain to remain an Australian family favourite.

PHOTOGRAPHY BEYOND TECHINQUE: By Tom Persinger. Published by Focal Press YOUR TYPICAL PHOTOGRAPHY book usually goes one of two ways. How to take better photos, or a bunch of photos from one or more photographers collected together from an entire career. Both these can be inspiring, and also provide lovely imagery - but very few books focus on the why. Why do we take photos? Photography Beyond Technique does not deal with any technique in making a photo. There’s no discussion on perspective, f stops or anything remotely like a textbook. And it only contains a smattering of actual photographs. So what’s the fuss about? F295 is an American group of photographers who meet and discuss old ways of making

photos, really old - turn of last century old. They have an annual conference, and this book is a collection of talks presented at the symposium. For many photographers, making the image is just the first step in a process. You make a photo, then later on decide to go black and white, perhaps

add a scruffy border, maybe add noise/grain, dodge here, burn there, and then print. It’s a huge freedom we’re given, particularly since most of us are now shooting digital and have infinite time to process to their heart’s desire. But what about if making a photo is reduced to just one single step? What if what you’re exposing through your camera is the actual photo? No post production, no editing, no ‘fixing it later in photoshop’? These are the stories of those who are creative enough to not only understand the processes of making a photo more than 150 years ago, but who have mastered this process using modern day technology to give slightly better hit rates. Many photographers are using a daguerreotype method of photo making. In essence, it’s a thin sheet of silver, usually laid on a copper backing, which is polished and then exposed to halogen, bromine or chlorine - or a combination of these - to create a light sensitive plate. This was then inserted into the camera and the lens uncovered from anywhere from seconds to minutes, depending on the brightness of the scene. The plate was then removed and the picture fixed with heated mercury. As many of those chemicals will do really nasty things to a person - they’ve been substituted but the process is essentially the same. To create a photograph, therefore, takes hours. To be that enthusiastic about making a single photo requires a lot of answers to the following: Why use such an old, slow process? How does the process add to the photograph? Where does one get their inspiration from to create such work? Twenty-one photographers answered the call in this book,

“Each photographer seems to have manipulated the process to suit the subject and therefore tell more about the subject than you could possibly do with a cameraphone” and it’s a fascinating insight into the questions above. We can read about the thought process that goes into photographing a busy metropolis, or a few leaves and branches. Each photographer seems to have manipulated the process to suit the subject and therefore tell more about the subject than you could possibly do with a cameraphone. And that’s the point, really. When you see a photo made in the ‘60s or ‘70s - you expect the colours to be way off because that was the best we could do with film and

detail in your shadows. You don’t get halos or de-saturated edges on your subjects, either. As to the final result, when you look at a daguerreotype, it requires fairly careful positioning to ensure you can see both the light hitting the surface of the plate and also the darker parts reflected in the silver surface. It’s kind of like when you stare at a mirror and see a reflection in the surface of the glass, as well as the reflective backing behind the glass. You have to look through the glass to see your reflection. This is what gives the unique 3D feel to daguerreotype photos you’re not looking at the surface, you need to be able to look through them. It’s a genuinely immersive experience. And every single photo is unique. There is no possible way to make two images the same. It’s the exact opposite of today’s photography world, where one image of some TV stars can be made on a phone at an awards ceremony and then sent around the world in a matter of seconds. The passion and drive required to make these truly one off pictures, as well as the dedication to the art of creating such pictures makes Photography Beyond Technique a fascinating read, and has certainly inspired this writer to try out a few new things.

processing at the time. But true colours would take away a lot of the meaning, authenticity, and feeling of the photo. It’s the same with the much older processing, which adds a warmth and charm impossible to recreate with a Photoshop plugin or filter. There are some wonderful benefits of photographing in this old way, using modern technology. For starters, with a pinhole camera you can shoot into the Sun and have the Sun in the photo, and still retain an enormous amount of WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

Shiraz whilst I had them both at hand so we could share the spoils As repayment for their generosity, I made a fine dinner (yes, I can cook!) of roast leg of lamb with traditional roasted vegetables of potato, pumpkin and onion, making sure that there were sufficient onions and pumpkin to make into the pan gravy. And yes, there were greens, fresh peas and beans! Enough about what I made – “What about the wine?”, you say! Well, the generous pourings into the large, red wine stemware revealed a beautiful cherry crimson

This bottle (actually bottles) were a pleasant gift from the prodijee staff who had recently been on a classic car run from Melbourne to the Hunter Valley in the editor’s prized 1965 Datsun 1600 Sports roadster. colour that was quite picture perfect. There was a delightfully slight musty nose that gave away old notes with fresh nuances. Trailing very softly on the pallet, the tastes for me were plummy and berry, with the flavours enhanced by no heavy tannins and no real oak grab of the taste buds. This was excellent, as well as a surprise, as the label did say 15 months in French and American Oak.

The vintner at Tatler certainly knows his craft as this Archie’s Paddock 2013 Shiraz, I can best describe as luscious, and whilst it is a 2013 wine, I can recommend drinking it right now. Yes, it can be bedded for a few years, but really, do we want to wait? I think I will just have to convince the editor to make another trip and pick me up a 2009 to see what aging can achieve! The wine was a perfect accompaniment to what I was told was a beautiful lamb roast, especially the none too healthy, but absolutely delicious pan made gravy carrying all those rich juices from the roasted meat, vegetables and of course the obligatory quality red wine.

a fusion of surf & punk Y-3 SS15 LAUNCH - PARIS, FRANCE.

xploring an energetic fusion of surf and punk, Y-3 launched its Spring/Summer 2015 collection during Paris Men’s Fashion Week. At its origins, surf culture was unique in its challenge of the mainstream, eschewing convention and the status quo in favor of the next big wave. Similarly, Yohji Yamamoto has consistently pushed boundaries. For Y-3 this season, he envisioned slim-fit futuristic sportswear detailed with bright pops of color and playful prints—all of them finished with unique surf-inspired details and Y-3’s own take on traditional Hawaiian prints: lush, modern, and intoxicating. The women’s collection included everything voluminous frock dresses and easy sweats to zip-up blousons and oversize parkas. The surf inspiration

E

was also interpreted in acid-bright ombré separates that faded from eye-popping tones of turquoise and peach to charcoal gray. Black serves as an enduring touchstone for Yamamoto and this season was no different as the non-colour showed up on sharply cut coats and billowing jumpsuits and skirts. Menswear similarly explored dichotomies of printed and solid, tailoring and volume, hard and soft. Neat polos and T-shirts came trimmed with this season’s bold Hawaiian motifs. Suit jackets featured a subtle toneon-tone version of the print, while button-down shirts introduced a playful pattern of seaside iconography from Paris to Honolulu. www.Y-3.com

A FORMER LORD MAYOR OF MELBOURNE AND THE UNIVERSITY OF MELBOURNE’S PROFESSOR OF HORTICULTURE ARE BUILDING A BALANCED, HARMONIOUS LANDSCAPE THAT HELPS TO CREATE THE COMPLEX SCRUMPTIOUS FLAVOUR IN BADDAGINNIE RUN’S ELEGANT WINES. WORDS: JOHN ANTHONY Seven Sisters Vineyard – Baddaginnie Run www.baddaginnierun.net.au was so delighted with the Baddaginnie Run 2012 Merlot that I had during the Cerberus Beach House dinner I just had to see where this fine wine was made. It was actually quite convenient as I had been promising a day out in the country to the family for quite some time, and having the Strathbogie Ranges only two-and-a-half hours away, in a very pleasant drive through the Yarra Valley, to Yea, to the Midland Highway and then turning off before Benalla, made it all the more fun. (satnavs are great!) There was no fear of an inebriated wine buff battling the highways on the way home as I had previously enjoyed a good sampling of the wines at one of Baddaginnie Run’s regular tastings at Gasworks Farmers Market in Albert Park (third Saturday of every month) www.gasworks.org.au/farmers-market I’d subsequently acquired a range of varieties from a great local bottle shop – Red White & Amber in Glenferrie Road Hawthorn, just a stone’s throw North of Glenferrie station. Once I had stretched my legs on arriving at the Seven Sisters, I discovered that the directors of this lovely vineyard are Winsome McCaughey and her partner, Snow Barlow. Winsome described the estate as a, “Small, family company, which produces Baddaginnie Run Wines from our single estate vineyard in the Strathbogie Ranges”. Winsome’s story behind the wines is inspiring. “Our grandchildren are seventh-generation associated with the beautiful and dearly loved valley, which produces the grapes for Baddaginnie Run wines. We are currently in the process of creating a 5km biodiversity corridor, through undertaking additional plantings of native trees and understory that will link the upland forests in the Strathbogie Ranges, down the valley floor to encompass and connect isolated patches of original bushland and tracts of land replanted over recent decades, so as to join up all bits with remnant roadside bush to the north of the vineyard. “This has led to us dedicating 50 percent of the farm to biodiversity and 50 per cent to productivity. This is our way of trying to create a balanced, harmonious landscape that ensures

the land has the capacity to go on yielding for at least a further seven generations. We firmly believe it’s this happy, healthy landscape (terroir) that comes through in Baddaginnie Run’s elegant wines and helps to create their complex, scrumptious flavours.” Now I know some prodijee readers will be saying, “Winsome McCaughey, where do I know that name?” Well, Winsome recently received the Order of Australia for her distinguished service to the community. She is a former Lord Mayor of Melbourne, as well as heading up many national bodies, such as Australian Business Arts, and what has now become Food Standards Australia New Zealand. Snow’s credentials and achievements are also impressive and he is currently Professor of Horticulture at the University of Melbourne. Seven Sisters Vineyard lies 8km into the Strathbogie Ranges from the township of Baddaginnie, and was just beautiful to see. The weather was in our favour for travelling, with a warmer than expected ending of Autumn. It was explained to me that at the Seven Sisters, “The climate is classically continental; Winters are cold but not severely so. Summer days are hot, followed by cool nights and the vineyard enjoys a wonderful, long, ripening season throughout the summer months - so allowing the full, complex flavours of the fruits to come through.” No wonder that Baddaginnie Run Wines have won more than 60 wine awards in Australia. What a great day, but I was a little weary by the time we got home, so I capped off the day with – you guessed it – a Baddaginnie Run wine. Look out for the review in the next issue of prodijee. london calling London’s National Theatre is a National Treasure he National Theatre is an institution and one that after this Summer, I am thrilled to say, I will finally have been a part of in one small way or another. I am attending the National Youth Theatre’s Epic Stages six-week program. Culminating in theatrical performances in the West End, it will be a truly incredible experience and one I shall write about later in the Summer. If you have the chance to be a part of the NYT (National Youth Theatre), you should jump at it. Its previous alumni consist of the likes of Daniel Day-Lewis, David Suchet, Matt Lucas and Dame Helen Mirren! To find out more log on to: www.nyt.org.uk In regards to my recent theatre experiences, I have been treated to some truly incredible theatre, all at the National. Firstly, at the National’s Shed (a temporary venue until 2016), was Yellow Face by David Henry Hwang, which tackles the difficult and confusing issue of race, with emphasis on ‘colour-blind casting’. Set in America, it delves in to the difficulty faced around casting race on stage and the confusion of race in daily life. Set in the round, this mocumentary is as funny as it is informative. The cast of seven was stupendous and with most of the actors portraying multiple characters, they all preformed with real truth and depth. I then got to see The Silver Tassie- a play by Sean O’Casey. Written in 1923, the play is about the truly depressing affects and reality of war. It was visually stunning and continuously left me breathless.

Set in Dublin and on the frontline, this production used expressionism and realism to depict the horrors, torment and torture of war. Repetition, song and poetry are used throughout the play, along with some extremely well-timed and visually

stunning pyrotechnics and stage design. At one point the entire set is transformed from a sitting room into the frontline of war, with the backdrop of an abandoned church. Unsettling and beautiful, this powerhouse of a play is performed by a glorious cast, with expert performances by all. The lead performance by Ronan Raftery - whose character has a glorious transformation going from his town’s football hero to an angry ‘cripple’ - puts it perfectly when he calls out - “The lord has given and the lord has taken away”. Getting to see Michael Palin in Conversation was a blissful evening! His comic timing and outlook on the entertainment industry and life was fascinating, insightful and downright hysterical. The National Theatre continually has these In Conversation talks/ debates and all of them are £3 a seat. They are a steal and truly cheap treat, so be sure to check who is on and book in advance. Art is in the eye of the beholder, but it should be in the bin ecycled art is a level of hell that my son’s kindergarten class imposes upon our family. During this activity, the little Picassos create ‘art’ using empty tissue boxes, paper towel rolls and the like. All of it is large. None of it is particularly good and in my humble opinion, all of it should once again be recycled… in my trash bin. When my tyke bring these ‘works’ home I leave them in the garage in the hope that my six year old will forget that they ever existed and thus I can send them on their merry way to their next incarnation. I’m even willing to photograph his projects before I round file them. My husband, his father, doesn’t believe in the scan and sack method that I propose. “What if he wants to touch it?” he asks. Thus our home (and garage) is filled with kid art. We have two kids – their collective oeuvre takes up a serious amount of space. And, while some of their two dimensional creations hang nicely on the walls amongst the photographs that document our family, the shoebox dioramas and other three dimensional projects collect dust. I hate dust bunnies… almost as much as I hate most school art projects. Ahhhh! While screaming, I thought about how I will bequeath my kids their childhoods in our electronic age. It will be different than how my husband and I have our respective childhoods preserved – but how? My mother, an unsentimental sort, threw away the art I brought home from school – often in front of me. She remembers few details of my youth, which is good as

I was a rebellious sort and was likely out to kill her, (yes, yes, my daughter is my mother’s revenge). Thus my mother bequeathed me an unorganized box of old school reports, photographs and two envelopes that prove I was a natural blonde once… a long, long time ago. Then there is my mother’s antithesis; my mother-in-law. She

is a true homemaker. She cooks, sews and remembers every detail about her three children’s youth (although her memory’s accuracy is questionable, according to my husband - her first born). And, she has a garage filled with her children’s childhood creations, awards and the like. I know this because when my in-laws moved from the house where my husband and his siblings were raised, they disgorged some of the vestiges of my husband’s youth on us. These boxes are in our garage – next to the recycled art. Ahhhh! How can I break this trend? There has to be a middle ground. Presuming I can counter my husband’s sentimental arguments

“My mother, an unsentimental sort, threw away the art I brought home from school – often in front of me. She remembers few details of my youth, which is good as I was rebellious and likely out to kill her”

- a heck of an assumption as I am married to a very smart attorney who argues for a living. Regardless, I am determined that I am right to believe that we can honor our children’s childhood without creating a sanctuary for vermin in our garage. Somehow. Without holding on to absolutely every project our kids bring home. Really. I realised I needed help, professional help. Do you know how difficult it is to win a fight with a man who argues professionally? So I turned to professional organiser, Stacy Santos of www. MyFriendStacy.com who has seen many cluttered, unusable spaces in her time. “In this age of photo-obsessed parents (often called, ‘momarazzi’) where, every child creates ‘amazing’ art work and where the fear of crushing a child’s selfesteem prevails, we end up with a mountain of doodles, scribbles, splats of paint, and sticker covered pieces of scrap paper. Don’t get even me started on the 3D art of wood, corks, string, nails and the like,” the lovely, and organised mother said when I caught her between carpool and a client. “I have seen boxes arrive (at) clients’ houses within which is ‘art work’, etc from said client’s youth. Their mother, believing herself dutiful, stored all of it and now bequeaths it to them via USPS, only to have the box dumped in a trash bin by me, called in by the loving child who is overwhelmed with a disaster of a garage,” Santos continued – by now likely knee deep in a garage, apparently like mine. “Be wise or be buried,” Santos added, “hand prints are good, cute stories actually written by your offspring are also good, as are teacher reports and a few gingerbread folks with your child’s face on them. This, plus a few paintings that you REALLY would

hang in a public space within your home is enough. Trust me, this list alone will leave you with a lot to store. And, if you have more than one child – I have three – you have to purge more.” Santos further suggested one dispose of unwanted work by the child behind their backs and not in a bin that they can easily peruse. Be judicious – and don’t be careless; sounds like sound organising and good parenting advice. Now, to put the kids to bed and convince my husband

that that throwing out some, only some, of the kids’ preschool projects is acceptable.

You only have to read the reviews to understand the love people have for this eating venue; comments like “Tantalising to the tastebud’s”, “The best lunch I have ever had at a restaurant. Walking down the stairs into Maha, you instantly realise you are in a chic establishment - it’s moody and intimate, with mystical music playing; the vibe is one of class and sophistication. semolina and saffron dumplings, is it any wonder Maha is said to have an air of culinary authenticity? The restaurant was opened in 2008 by award-winning chef and restaurateur, Shane Delia. Shane has been well known for his style of cooking for many years but also for

his many television appearances, including his well-loved program on SBS – Spice Journey, and his support of charities. When I met Shane, it didn’t take me long to figure out I had met a

man who was driven and devoted, but he was also a man who had a massive heart. Shane told me that he started a formal apprenticeship in cooking when he was 15, leaving school to become a cook, adding that he wasn’t very academic, but when he applied himself to something, he would excel at it. Cooking was what he wanted to do, so it was something he applied himself to, and the results have proven that he excels at it. “I love cooking, I think I loved the hierarchy of the kitchen, I love the structure of the kitchen, particularly (back) then, it’s not so much like that now. In a kitchen, you know what you have got to do to succeed. You start here, then you move up and you move up and you become an apprentice, commi, demi, chef de partie, chef de cuisine, sous chef, and then eventually executive chef. “It’s not like that in many fields. If you are in an office job, what do you have to do to get to the top, who do you have to sleep with, what do you have to do? You just work hard and one day you will eventually get there? I just can’t do

that. It’s too political; I’m not good with politics. I know what I want; I go out and get it. “I love the freedom that you have in a kitchen, to a certain extent. In the early days you get told what to do but you have still got freedom within your square to express yourself, and I like that instant gratification, or instant response from your customer. “I will serve a meal here, I will take it out to the customer and give it to them, and I will come and clear and ask them how it was. I will either get thumbs up or thumbs down, but if its thumbs down I will resolve that straight away. I am given the chance to make amends straight away, so (the customer) leaves here happy, as opposed to not finding out until weeks later when they have told half a dozen of their mates and you didn’t have the chance to rectify it. “It’s very rewarding as opposed to an industry where you can produce something and never really hear if it was a success or even if someone liked it.” Shane said there are things that draw him to the industry other than just the cooking. “I love cooking and the art of cooking, I love food, I love hospitality, but it’s not a job. The day I start coming to ‘work’ will be the day I start looking for a job that pays better. I don’t come to work, this is my life, and I have a great life.” Cooking is not a nine-to-five job, and you have to be prepared to put in long hours to succeed - there are no quick fixes, and no success comes over night. At age 15, Shane, who lived in Sydenham in Melbourne’s western suburbs, would catch the train to work but because he was finishing after midnight, when the V Line trains had stopped running, he had to rely on his father to come in and pick him up. The hours were long, but it was something he thrived on, feeling that working with a team and pushing hard was a badge of honour. “It wasn’t like you were the only one; the whole team was pushing hard. If you weren’t pushing, you WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

“As long as I have good food, and family and friends to share it with, my life is complete”

were falling behind and letting the team down,” said Shane. It wasn’t long ago that Le Restaurant in the Sofitel (Melbourne) was the mecca of cooking; it was where Shane did his apprenticeship. “In the kitchen at the time there was myself, George Calombaris, Shannon Bennett, Gabriele Martin and a few other chefs who haven’t

made it to the media but are amazing cooks. Everyone has gone through there, Donovan Cooke, Stephen Mercer, Gary Mehigan was executive sous chef; there have been some big chefs go through there. At that time, it was a really competitive kitchen to be in. “If you were successful within the industry, chefs knew who you were, they knew your reputation, if you could get a job just by picking up the phone, if people sniffed that you were looking for a job they were calling you – then you knew you were successful. There were no celebrity chefs then.” At age 21, Shane left the Sofitel to take up the position of chef de partie at the Sebel and then was offered the job as sous chef at Yering Station in the Yarra Valley, where, one year later, he became executive chef.

“I was the youngest executive chef at a five star property in the country. Even then, I was still pushing hard, I was working from nine o’clock in the morning and not leaving until it closed, six or seven days a week, whatever it took.” Shane’s life has revolved around hospitality since an early age, but 2008 and the opening of Maha was a turning point in his life. “It’s a beautiful restaurant, I love it, Maha is my wife’s name as well. (My wife) is the real back bone to what I do. Without her love, support, understanding and forgiveness when I’m being an idiot I could not have come this far. I owe it all to her, I love her to the end of the earth and back. “Maha and I opened this restaurant in 2008 and I was in partnership with George Calombaris WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

and the guys at the Press Club. It was a great partnership until it didn’t work. They have a direction where they want to take their businesses, they are amazing restaurateurs and I have learnt a lot from them. They WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

are inspirational and have given a lot to the industry. I have a different vision for what I want to be as a person and as a chef. Things just weren’t aligning so George and I sat down as mates (and) I said,

‘we started as mates, we did our apprenticeship together and now it’s probably a time where you follow what you want to do and I follow what I want to do, and let’s just cash in’. There was no animosity and it’s been really good for us. Shane no longer wields the peeler in the kitchen, but is still very involved with Maha and talks about the support from team he has working for him. “I run the business. I have got a great head chef, I’ve got an amazing general manager who is also a shareholder, we have a great team that manage Maha, I manage the team. You have to lead from the front. “I get here in the morning and I do what I have to do, I do what the business needs but sometimes the best use of my time is not to be in here but to be out in the market place. While Shane has also carved out a successful television career hosting SBS ONE cooking program, Spice Journey, he hasn’t gone down the same path as Masterchef judges, George Calombaris and Gary Mehigan though he admits to trying out for the show. “In the early days I auditioned for Masterchef, I auditioned for My Kitchen Rules; I thought it was a great opportunity to provide for my family and to build a good business network behind it. Everything happens and doesn’t happen for a reason and it’s a blessing that it didn’t go forward because I would have found it hard to be there for my children, for bringing them up. I am happier with what I have got; it is a blessing what I have.” When talking about his life now, Shane can’t wipe the huge smile off his face. He says his life is great. He gets to walk his daughter to school in the mornings, and he has the time to be very involved in his children’s lives. “My daughter is five, Jayda, and my son is two, Jude. My daughter is great, I am really enjoying being a father to her and bringing her up and I spend as much time with her as I can. My son and I have a great bond, but I think when they are about four or five you really can

Ruled by the wooden spoon! On doing a bit more research about this wonderful man I found a blog he had written to his mum – through laughter and tears of reading it I decided to include a small part of it in this article.

Some rule by the sword, my mum ruled by the wooden spoon! Some of you might find it hard to believe but as a child I was a bit of a shit. Yes, yes I know, completely shocking right?! Mum, I don’t know how you ever put up with me. You are the most amazing Mum in the world. I am sorry for all the heartache I have caused you over the years. I can be, and have been, ungrateful, disrespectful, rude and dismissive. I am sorry for not showing you the love and affection you deserve. Thank you for sticking by me when no one else did. Thank you for helping me when I’ve been at my lowest. Thank you for being the best Grandmother any grandchild could ever ask for. Thank you for the unconditional love you show to Maha. Thank you for always forgiving and loving me no matter how bad I have been. Thank you for giving me the strength, dedication and motivation I need every day of my life. Happy Mother’s Day Mum. If I can be half the parent you have been, I’ll consider myself a success. I love you, always. start to have an impact, rather when they are just two or three. With my daughter I can sit down and talk, it’s nice.” It’s hard to imagine Shane has a spare moment, yet he still finds time for outside activities, including following his beloved Western Bulldogs AFL team, Melbourne City A-League team, and supporting charities. “I have the ambassador roles with Mercedes, Melbourne City, and Western Bulldogs (and the Bulldog’s) Sons of the West is my chosen charity. We have got Spice Journey season two about to come out and a new book that we are working on. I also have a partnership with Peter Rowland’s catering, which is a great partnership. It’s called Rowland by Shane Delia.”

When you first meet Shane, he exudes happiness and laughter, he has a cheeky side to him and comes across as very happy-go-lucky, but he is probably one of the most grounded people I have ever met. He is humble, always mentioning the people he works with or has associations with, always praising their abilities and their support. When talking about the logistical nightmare of providing food to the Paddock Club at Melbourne’s Grand Prix, he praised his business partner Peter Rowland, saying “I couldn’t do it on my own, no chance at all.” He talks about the people at Mercedes as being “great guys”, and pays tribute to his SBS family by saying, “Eric Dwyer, Michael Ebeid, Tony Iffland, all the guys in the senior team have really made

me feel a part of the SBS family, I am really appreciative of what they have done.” And then there is the team from his production house, Essential Media, which produces Spice Journey, “They believed in me, I owe a lot to them.” But when talking about the restaurant and the team there, Shane has a very different perspective to a lot of people who are running their own businesses - he cares about the staff and customers. “I’m interested in serving good food that people enjoy, the staff have a good work place and the business makes a profit so that we are able to reinvest back into the business. I am not taking the money, filling my pockets and running all around the world, I am reinvesting in WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

my business. “I still live in the same shit hole as I was when I was 21. We are not living in the lap of luxury, I bought that house when I was 21 and I am still living in it. I could easily take my money and go and buy something beautiful in Toorak, but I want to reinvest into my work place. My staff enjoy it here, my customers have a great experience

and I am reinvigorated to produce good food.” Eighteen years of ‘overnight success’ has not taken the Western suburbs boy out of the man, he knows exactly who he is and where his priorities and heart lie. Shane is only 34 years old, he has no business partners, he is the tenant and the landlord, he has a

family he loves and who love him right back, he wants to buy a new family home, but right now it’s just about getting Maha right and making sure that it has got longevity for the next 10-15 years. Despite not considering himself successful, I am telling you this guy is a success; he is a success in LIFE.

Shane Delia’s cheeky personality, zest for life and enthusiasm for food and culture come together in Shane Delia’s Spice Journey Turkey. The SBS ONE series - which began on July 31, is the second stage of Shane’s odyssey through the Middle East that sees him travel to exotic and mysterious Turkey. With renewed pride in their Ottoman past, Turkish chefs are rediscovering the ancient recipes that were served to the Sultans, and serving them to eager diners in restored palaces and renovated timber mansions or konaks. 1. Once you are in business and moving ahead, a basic rule that I always say to our guys is, money is in the buying, not in the selling. The market will dictate what you can sell for. 2. Any fool can take a risk. Anyone can say, “I believe in it and I am going to do it”. To be successful you have to take a calculated risk. Assess the options in anything, whether it’s buying a new phone or a pair of jeans, or opening a business that you have to mortgage your house with. Can I do it? Can I live with it? Can I live with the repercussions if it turns sour? What are the repercussions if it turns sour? Don’t just look at the positive. It is OK to say that you are going to be strong and everything is going to be rosy, and that’s great, that’s

what you will work for and you will have to be focussed, but before you get to that point, you have to check yourself. Can I do it? Am I going to be OK? Am I going to lose my house? Am I going to be able to support my kids? You need to assess all the risks. 3. I don’t consider myself successful; there are a lot of things I still want to achieve. How do you measure success? The façade of success – the Mercedes, which isn’t mine, the business – which the bank owns, the face in the paper. Is that success? Or is success that I am healthy, I am content, I have got two beautiful kids and a wife that love me, that my parents respect me and I respect them – that’s my measure of success. The main reason I have reached what I have reached

in business is because I haven’t disrespected anyone along the way. Treat people the way you want to be treated, it all comes back. You don’t do it because it comes back, you do it because it’s the nice, right thing to do. I think eventually, you will start to build yourself a good foundation and you won’t have so far to fall if you ever fall. I’ve got good people around me, great advisors, great family, great friends. 4. Keep it real. I still live in the West. I still have my Holden in the garage, I love the ‘Doggies’, love Melbourne City, love my fast cars, love my hip hop music, love my tattoos. I am still me – but I can still sit at dinner with the Premier, move with CEOs of companies, host a television show and be that person – ME. I haven’t forgotten who I really am.

food couture Gluten free and still fabulous! am bringing this edition to you from the teak deck of a magnificent super yacht as we head to Italy after a short stint in Croatia and Montenegro. I’ve been commissioned to do a European Summer season as a private chef for an individual who owns one of my favourite food experiences. It’s a brand that is known and loved for its decadent chocolate treats all over the world, especially in Australia. A brand focused on taste, tradition and quality. It is a brand known for its treats, sweets and to-die-for desserts, which is why I found it ironic that two of the guests of said sweet operation owner were gluten intolerant and seeking a gluten free menu. In this day and age it’s hard to find a product that is not laden with processed wheat flours and added glutens. It’s also not that hard to find a gluten free alternative. After being gluten free myself for quite some years and being exposed to celiac disease through my catering company, I have soon come to know that an increasingly large number of people are opting for gluten free alternatives and a gluten free way of life. I can only put it down to people’s bodies waking up to the fact that we are not designed to process wheat, and due to the way these products have shaped the way we eat, our health is suffering. I often hear people ask why it is such a substantial part of daily diets when it is so bad for us. To that I answer, ‘When has human health ever been a concern where corporate turnover and profit are concerned?’ But all politics and jokes aside, this is a serious issue across the globe and one that is easily deviated from with the correct food knowledge and our personal

commitment to better health. Essentially, when ingested, these processed wheat and gluten laden foods such as white breads, pastas, biscuits, desserts and cakes cause a spike in the blood sugar levels that gives you a fast hit of energy. As a result you then crash as your energy levels decrease just as rapidly as they spiked, leaving you feeling lethargic and sluggish and looking for your next quick fix. This is a regularly occurring eating pattern in today’s society and one that has most certainly contributed to the rise of type 2 diabetes. Furthermore, bloating, cramping and feeling sluggish in the morning

are all serious but common side effects of wheat and gluten consumption. Constipation and irregular bowel movements are also evident in those that eat wheat regularly. Skin disorders and irritations such as dermatitis, eczema and psoriasis are also linked diets high in wheat and gluten. One of my guests, as a result of wheat and gluten consumption, severely damaged her digestive system and is now nursing her way back to digestive health through a gluten free alkaline-based diet. She attests to seeing the results almost immediately and has been feeling the benefits ever since. Lucky for human kind, and my guests, that in this time of wheat and gluten riddled products and convenience foods there is also an awakening and awareness to the alternatives that are better for the body. I found it quite easy to eat similar foods as others whilst substituting the gluten and wheat nasties for more wholesome and

healthier options. Gluten free products such as pastas and crackers are great but they are still processed products. Don’t be fooled into thinking that because something is gluten free is good for you. This is a common mistake when people are eating convenience foods, such as biscuits or sweets. These products are filled with sugars and other preservatives, hence making them bad for you. I always say that if you eat from the earth, what was grown in the ground or caught wild from the ocean, you are on the right track. THE ACID CONSISTS OF GLOBE-TROTTING, GRAMMY NOMINATED DJ & PRODUCER, ADAM FREELAND, CALIFORNIAN POLYMATH, STEVE NALEPA AND AUSTRALIAN, LA-BASED ARTIST AND PRODUCER, RY X. THE SOUND THEY’VE CREATED TOGETHER IS TRULY GENRE-LESS, A TERM USED WITH INCREASING FREQUENCY BUT NEVER QUITE SO WELL SUITED AS TO THEM. DARREN HOUSE SPOKE TO ADAM IN LONDON ABOUT ACID’S FIRST ALBUM, LIMINAL. IT’S BEEN SAID THAT THE EP WAS EFFORTLESS; WOULD YOU SAY THE ALBUM WAS AS WELL? This came together very easily. It was just the spontaneity of the three of us in the studio. Most of the tracks were done in a day, pretty much - the details were finished later - but the core writing, the bones of most of the tracks were done in a day. I have spent months labouring over pieces of music before (so) it was relatively effortless. WHY DO YOU THINK IT HAPPENED THAT WAY? Brian is a very experienced songwriter, I have a lot of experience as a producer and so has Steven and we all came together at a moment in life where we had all done a lot of work on our craft. (It’s) just that weird, rare alchemy of being very different individuals, the push-pull between the three of us. I think when you are on your own you can second guess and umm and ahhh for ages. We didn’t have a lot of time because we all had other commitments, so we had short windows of time to do it. There was no time to guess - it was like, yep, that worked, that didn’t work - there was no time for insecurity. There were bold decisions like, ‘that felt good, let’s go’. IT IS SAID THE QUICKEST SONGS ARE OFTEN THE BEST. DO YOU AGREE? I do. The mind screws everything up. It comes from a place of intuition and heart; the subconscious, liminal kind of realms. You don’t think about (writing) because the brain gets in the way and messes everything up. If you do it quickly, (the brain) doesn’t have time to judge and worry, which is the death of all creativity. So yes, I would agree, the quickest stuff is the best stuff. People don’t think about music, they feel it. That same spontaneity when WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

you wrote it is what will really affect people. I am not saying that there aren’t tracks that have been laboured over that are amazing - obviously there are plenty, but it’s just that certain, raw element that can only be captured in that moment. HOW DID YOU APPROACH THE ALBUM? We did the first four tracks in ten days and then I went back to England and came back to LA, where we wrote all the stuff a bit later. I don’t really know how we approached it. Again, didn’t have a lot of time. I flew over to LA and there was a bit of a mix up in the diary. Steve, whose studio we were using, had another gig that started at midday every day for pretty much the whole time I was in LA to do the album. We had to start at nine in the morning and go until midday. It was like, we have got three hours, let’s go! I don’t know if we really had a chance to talk about a concept, or what we were going to do, we just had a lot of conversations in the WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

“I felt boxed into a sound, an expectation for a lot of my career, and it’s nice to just make music without that. For a long time we didn’t tell anyone who was behind (this project) and it was just nice to make something without thinking what it was or where it fitted in” studio happening whilst we were making the music. They weren’t necessarily about the music but they formed the vibe a bit. WHAT WERE THOSE CONVERSATIONS ABOUT? The things that Stephen, Brian and I were talking about in the studio were more along the lines of the metaphysical – we weren’t talking about football and tennis (laughs). We were into appreciating some visual artists and listening to Terrence McKenna recordings. I had been reading books on alchemy and the semantics of it. We all bonded over more esoteric topics

and I think that kind of then formed the lyrics and the vibe of the record. YOUR SOUND IS DESCRIBED AS GENRE-LESS – IS THAT SOMETHING YOU SET OUT TO ACHIEVE? We weren’t trying to be anything. For me, it’s very refreshing to… I felt boxed into a sound, an expectation for a lot of my career, and it’s nice to just make music without that. For a long time we didn’t tell anyone who was behind (this project) and it was just nice to make something without thinking what it was or where it fitted in. We were just trying to make something beautiful. From my experience, as soon as you try

to fit into a genre, you limit yourself. We weren’t trying to be genre-less, we were just making music. THAT MUST BE VERY LIBERATING FOR A MUSICIAN. Yes, the whole process is really refreshing. YOU ALSO SHATTER PERCEPTIONS. IS THAT DELIBERATE OR IS IT A RESULT OF YOUR MUSIC? It’s certainly not deliberate. I have always felt like a bit of an alien in terms of my musical taste – where I fit in from my DJ background. I was playing things on the fringe of different scenes that shouldn’t quite work. Sometimes it would work, and sometimes it wouldn’t. I don’t know if I am out to shatter perceptions, but I like to be challenged by art, music; I get bored quickly if it’s too safe. I need some kind of edge to keep me entertained. From my experience, if I play the music I want to hear, or make the music I want to hear, then there’s a certain demographic, which will resonate with it. ALL THREE OF YOU HAVE PRODUCED IN THE PAST, WAS THAT A BENEFIT OR A HINDRANCE? I think it was a benefit. It’s hard to describe what is in your head when someone is working on the computer and you have got an idea and you can do it, it’s easier to just get in there and take over. A lot of that would happen. Again, that was why it was so quick. Whoever was driving in the hot seat would just take over. It was a big benefit. WERE YOU TOUGH ON EACH OTHER? No. Sometimes it was quite harsh. There was very rarely any bad vibe in the studio but there were sometimes dented egos for a moment, but I think that’s the case with any creative process. We are all quite strong characters and all very different, so there could have easily been moments or bust ups but I think we were all in a place that we can deal with that. There is quite an interesting ‘push -pull’ dynamic between us, which

is not necessarily easy in terms of the eternal dynamics of the three of us but in terms of the actual output and the writing process it works for whatever reason.

think, we are all so into what the output is beyond. It is definitely greater than the sum of the parts none of us could make this music on our own.

DENTED EGOS AND LIMITED TIME FRAMES SEEMS LIKE A RECIPE FOR DISASTER. (Laughs) Sometimes it feels like it could all implode at any minute. I

DOES THE THREAT OF IMPLOSION ADD TO THE EXCITEMENT? We weren’t thinking like that at the time, that’s more in retrospect. It was a relatively fun experience WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

making the record, absolutely. Being in a touring band is a different experience but that came afterwards. NO ONE KNEW WHO THE BAND WAS, THAT’S NOW OUT IN THE OPEN. HOW DO YOU PLAN TO APPROACH FUTURE RECORDS? Obviously we can’t be anonymous again, maybe we should have kept that going for a bit longer (but) it came to the point where it had to come out. I think we are going to be quite prolific and keep writing – it’s working. People get it, it’s going well. I think we just have to keep making interesting art for our own sake and if we keep with the mindset and enthusiasm of how we first made music, I think we will do fine. I think a lot of bands have pressures - once you have had some success - to make hits and all of that, but we were very careful to sign with a great label which really supports what we want to do. I think it will be good. I’m excited. WHAT ABOUT TOURING? Right now we are in touring mode. We have just done our first European tour and we are WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

doing a lot of festivals throughout the summer. We came down to Australia to do Splendour in the Grass, and side shows in Melbourne and Sydney at the end of July. It is a pretty big summer and all of September we are back in

Europe. Finding time to get back in the studio between now and the end of summer is unlikely. The album, liminal is out now through Liberator Music/Infectious Music. www.wearetheacid.com

ROUND SHE GOES IS AN AWARD-WINNING INDOOR FASHION MARKET DEDICATED TO WOMEN’S PRE-LOVED FASHION. WORDS: CAROL SHERIDAN EVENT PHOTOS: LOUISE WALPOLE. ow many times have you purchased a garment online? How many times has it been the exact fit/colour/length/width/type of fabric? How many times has it been exactly what you were looking for? If you are like me, you have purchased many garments online, and to be perfectly honest, it is rare that - when it is delivered - it is exactly what you were after. Sometimes, it is close, sometimes it isn’t, but is close good enough? Should you keep something that is just close? Should you send it back? Can you be bothered sending it back? Do you have to pay postage to send it back? Online shopping isn’t quite as easy as everyone makes out – it can be fraught with danger and disaster. Many women are into recycled fashion but have been disappointed with online purchases. Round She Goes, is exactly what it says, ‘wear it, love it, sell it’, it’s an award-winning indoor fashion market that is dedicated to women’s pre-loved fashion. You can purchase high quality garments at a fraction of their original cost and you get to try them on. Not only that, there isn’t that horrible musty and stale smell that you can find in many second hand shops. These extremely popular fashion events are run by Emma Morris who has always had a love of vintage clothing, designer bargains, op shop treasures and getting crafty - she has managed to bring all of these things together for everyone else to experience. The items sold at Round She Goes are secondhand vintage, retro or pre-loved designer. The rules and regulations for sale of goods is very strict – all items on sale are restricted to good quality women’s wear – garments and accessories that you would

lily’s life Savouring the serenity of the Dawn Patrol very morning, well before the break of dawn, ‘board meetings’ are held across Australia. But these are not board meetings as you know them. Yes, dedicated men and women gather in suits, but these aren’t the kind of suits you can wear at the office. There is a subculture around Australia, and the world, that cherishes the early hours of the morning. The surf subculture is rife, and those who are a part of it know well the elation of a dawn surf. Surfing is of course a sport that millions of people enjoy. Surfing is also a lifestyle, a type of meditation and a community. Whilst you can surf at any (warmer) hour of the day, the dawn surf (or dawn patrol as it’s often referred to) can change your outlook on life. On the face of it, there’s something seemingly irrational about the whole concept. To peel yourself out of a warm, safe bed in the cloak of night, wrestle an

often damp wetsuit, negotiate the foot-numbing cold sand to enter a body of water - at a time, which statistically is the most active hour of the world’s meanest predator, the shark - to an outsider must appear to defy logic. The stillness before sunrise is something that only the early birds

can understand. Since childhood, I have been a morning person. Where I grew up, near the bush, those early hours of the morning were reserved for the bird and a few morning walkers.

To peel yourself out of a warm, safe bed, wrestle a damp wetsuit, negotiate the footnumbing cold sand to enter a body of water - at a time, which statistically is the most active hour of the world’s meanest predator to an outsider must appear to defy logic”

At the beach people are different - active joggers, training groups, surfers and swimmers flock to the shore to salute the sun as it makes its daily arrival. For a fleeting moment, all of the beach goers stop what they are doing to watch the sun rise to the soundtrack of lapping waves. Being out in the water in those hours is a unique experience. Like other animals in the animal kingdom, we have a healthy respect for risk in the elements. Fear of predators, fear of the elements and the fear of not finding food or water. For the most part, modern society has eliminated the majority of these. And while, on the one hand, this makes for a more pleasant way of living, I believe fear is good for the soul. To start your day with a slap of reality about your relative importance in the scheme of things and being at the mercy of the elements does wonders for your perceptive. And whilst sliding down the face of a wave is as exhilarating in the afternoon as it is in the morning, dawn patrols are particularly special. By eight o’clock in the morning most have begrudgingly exited the water to start their working day. The promise of a hot shower is the only consolation for the end of play time. By 9am the morning’s adventure is reduced to a few grains of sand in the ears and water up the nose, but the experience of lucidity and peaceful tranquillity resonates throughout the day.

HAVING SIGNED WITH SIX INTERNATIONAL AGENCIES, SOPHIE NOW HAS HER SIGHTS SET ON FURTHERING HER CAREER OVERSEAS. as it to buy a bottle of shampoo or to get a haircut? Sophie can’t remember, because since the first time she set foot into a Hairhouse Warehouse, her life has been a whirlwind. As a 16-year-old, the temptation of walking away with a free hamper was too much to turn down, so Sophie Van Den Akker, agreed to the shop assistant’s request of being entered into a competition. “Three months later I get a call saying, ‘You are in the top 25 to be the face of Hairhouse Warehouse, it’s being held at Crown (casino), we need you to come in for rehearsals.’ It was a huge shock to me, it was the first I had heard of it and I thought it was a prank call to be begin with,” said Sophie. “I ended up winning, and I became the face of Hairhouse Warehouse for a year, and I won - I think - $25,000, a few photo shoots and a little bit of travel.” Modelling was something that

W

Sophie just fell into - originally she wanted a career as a mid-wife, but it was hard to not go through all the doors that were opening for her. The lure of Australia’s Next Top

Model was too much to walk away from and it was here that Sophie’s career became set in concrete. “The auditioning process (for Australia’s Next Top Model) was

funny, because my brother’s girlfriend wanted to audition. I said, ‘Hey, I will come along with you (but) I don’t want to audition, I will just go shopping while you stand in line.’ She said, ‘You are here now, you may as well just stand in line with me and talk to me’.” From standing in line to keep her friend company, to coming third runner-up in the series – obviously Sophie stood out in that line of hopeful models. “That, I think, was the learning curve for me as a model. I got to deal with different personalities and really learnt that it was what I wanted to do,” said Sophie. “I loved the experience, if I could go back and do it again I would. I think it was a learning curve of dealing with different personalities and emotions. I was there for three months; we had no TV, no newspapers, no radio and no private time, except for when you were in the shower. When you are that young, it becomes extremely challenging. It was fun because you were with all the girls but at times it was challenging.”

The experience also taught Sophie that modelling isn’t all about looks; a lot of the time it is also about personality, particularly when you are involved in areas of modelling requiring interaction with the public. “Personality is a huge thing and I think I was fortunate enough to have a personality on the show. People say I was a little bit out there, but that’s just me. I never change who I am, I haven’t over the past four years of full time modelling. I think that is due to my family, I have a very grounded and supportive family.” It was soon after finishing with Australia’s Next Top Model that Sophie signed with Priscilla’s model agency and presented with her first big modelling campaign. “Straight out of Australia’s Next Top Model, I went into shooting a Speedo campaign with Rachel Finch, we took over from Lara Bingle and that’s when everything started to really happen for me as a model, and as a person you could say. “With big things like that, Speedo and all the top campaigns, you have to go through quite a lot of meetings and sit down with the client, they really narrow it down, you become short-listed and it goes from there. I think personality comes into it a lot as a model, you can’t just look good.” Personality and looks alone sometimes can’t get you through the often ‘cattle line up’ process of model casting. It can be daunting and soul destroying and there are many who can’t cope with the pressure. Sophie feels that the casting experience is like going for a job interview and because she has done so many castings now, she is not overly fazed by them, but that is much different to how she felt in the early days. “It was extremely nerve wracking. When you are young, especially as a model, you compare yourself; the number one thing I have learnt is that you cannot compare yourself to others. Even now, with runway, I get nervous; I wouldn’t put it WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

past me to hyperventilate back stage. My legs shake, I go through stages of whether I am going to do runway or I am not going to do runway. I always say, ‘If you get me past the casting process, I will be fine for the show’, but it doesn’t faze me so much now. “You see yourself in such a different light to how others see you. My quote has always been, ‘Every Eye has a different beauty’. I am always interested to see what pictures (clients) choose, because you see yourself so differently. I am comfortable now, but it has been a long process to get here. “You have to let go of yourself because you are walking into somewhere as a blank canvas and the client sees you how they want to see you, and they will make you up how they want you made up. I think some girls struggle with that. I have known models to redo their makeup in the toilet after just having it done. You can’t do that. (The client) has booked you for a reason, for a specific look (and) it’s only for a day. Since the early days of Top Model and the Speedo campaign, Sophie’s face has graced many billboards, posters and flags. She is the face of Zachary, has walked at many fashion parades including Melbourne Fashion week where she worked with Dannii Minogue, and has just finished shooting a shoe campaign for Jo Mercer’s. Now signed with Chadwick model agency, Sophie sometimes finds it hard to keep up with her schedule, often not knowing what each week will bring. “I don’t necessarily know what I am doing all the time (and) I used to struggle with that when I was younger. I think you need structure when you are young - that discipline - but now I don’t think I could go back to a normal job. I like not knowing what’s coming up. I would fear looking in front of me and seeing a schedule, it would be overwhelming. I like the excitement of not knowing what’s coming, I think it’s mysterious. I have certain commitments that I WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

fulfil that are obviously pencilled in continuously, but I like the 50 percent that’s not pencilled in.” Networking is a large part of modelling, you need to get out there and be known, and something that comes naturally to Sophie. “I like meeting people face to face, I think (success) is a lot of ‘who you know’ and I like involving myself in certain things because it opens the door up to different things. “On the weekend I test drove a Mercedes, we all drove down to Daylesford and had lunch and then drove back. It was cool and exciting. The Mercedes team were really lovely and I go to a few lunches and things with them as well. (And) I went to Dolce and Gabbana last Friday night. “The reward is getting to do things and have experiences. Half of them you might not get paid for, but they are once-in-a-lifetime opportunities. And they are fun experiences that you can’t pay for. The only thing I hate is that I get to experience it by myself; I don’t get to bring my friends and family with me.” This Melbourne-born girl, who proudly speaks of her love of her home town, has lived and modelled in Perth, Sydney, Paris and Hamburg, and when I spoke to her she was just about to head back to Sydney to shoot some more campaigns before heading off to the USA. Sophie has worked with some high profile people and attributes a lot of her success to her professionalism as a model and always being kind to others. Sophie’s professionalism has earned her respect amongst her clients because she lives by her statement, “I am happy if you are happy”. “I will not leave a shoot until they are happy. I have never left a shoot where the client is unhappy, that’s what it comes down to for me. This is my job and I want them to be happy. I want to leave them with what they want, it’s my reputation.” It’s her reputation that she guards fiercely, saying, “If there is WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

something that you don’t ever want to do, stick to that. I would never jeopardise my reputation. “I wouldn’t do anything that would inflict negativity on my reputation. It is very easy to get sucked into this industry; there is a very fine line of reality. I think that’s where the family and support comes into it. It’s very easy to wander off and go down the wrong path.” Thankfully Sophie hasn’t ever been asked to do something that would jeopardise her reputation, but that is more than likely because she finds out all the facts of a shoot beforehand. For example, if you are strongly against wearing fur, make sure before the shoot that this isn’t something you will be expected to do. Having done all sorts of different modelling, from commercial to editorial to runway to working with the media, Sophie now feels that her career is heading towards television. “I am a person that rarely says no, I like to give things a go. I do feel like TV is what’s coming next, whether that’s Getaway, or The Block, I’m not sure.” Now signed with six agencies worldwide, her trip to the USA will definitely open up even more doors, but when asked if she would move overseas permanently, Sophie said, “I never say never with anything, but I will go and work there, but be based in Melbourne. If an opportunity arises over there for four or five months, I would definitely do it - I would be silly not to. “I have always stood strong in that I have always wanted Melbourne to be my base. I am happy to travel and happy to do stints everywhere, but my family is here so I am here, family is first with me. “The bottom line for me is, I love what I do, I love the people I meet, I have never had a bad experience, I have never worked with anyone bad. If someone said to me, ‘would you think you would be where you are now?’ – Not a chance! No way! I am extremely lucky, extremely.” WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

just sayin’ All women are real, no matter their size or shape t is making me sick, there are times I want to scream, but seriously, why is it that there are people who think they have to comment on absolutely everything about everybody else? A couple of weeks have gone by since the latest bursts of outrage from various groups about models being too thin and their bones stick out, for heaven’s sake! Comments such as ‘they don’t represent real women’ are heralded from the roof tops of certain soap boxes. If anyone dares to put a plus size model on a runway, there are also screams from the sanctimonious ones, she isn’t healthy, look at that, how could she possibly let herself get that way, she shouldn’t be put up as a role model for the impressionable ones amongst us. Too fat, too thin, too pretty, too ugly, nose too big, hair too long, legs too long, legs too short, bony shoulders, bony hips, gaunt face… I just want to scream! So now I will get on my soap box and – if you’ll pardon the pun weigh in on this. Why not, everyone has! It seems to me, that models, plus size or skinny, are real women – gasp! It’s true! If a designer chooses to hang their garments on a skinny coat hanger, then that is their choice. If they decide to hang them on a curvaceous coat hanger, then that is also their choice. The fact is, unless we live life with our head in the clouds, we all know that the majority of us can’t be a clone of the people on the runway – whether we want to be or not. But life is about choices. We might choose to diet, we might choose to reach for that extra helping of dessert; we might have just grown up the way our genetics have deemed we should be, but

I

that does not give anyone the right to pass judgement, or anyone the right to criticise. If we choose diet over dessert or vice versa, it is our choice – it is nobody else’s choice, nobody has held us down and either force fed us or gagged us so that we can’t eat. If a model doesn’t want to diet, to fit into what she may deem

a ridiculous size 4, then nobody is forcing her to do so. It is her choice to be a model and if the designers demand it from her, it is her choice to do it or not, hence it is her choice to be a model or not. It is also our choice to visit stores that only sell clothing of particular sizes, just as it is our choice to go to fashion parades where the models generally are skinny. If we don’t like it, why do we go? Of course there are people who, through illness the above does not apply, but the vast majority of us are fully capable of making our own decisions and making our own choices and nobody has the right to comment or criticise. We have all been born with a different set of genes. Some of us

“Too fat, too thin, too pretty, too ugly, nose too big, hair too long, legs too long, legs too short, bony shoulders, bony hips, gaunt face… I just want to scream!”

are naturally skinny, some aren’t, some of us are tall, some of us aren’t. We are all real – so, the comments about plus size not being healthy or skinny not setting a good example are absolute rubbish. We are who we are – if we choose to diet to skin and bone, while it may not be healthy, it is our choice, if we

choose to gorge ourselves on junk food, it is our choice. If our designers want to make clothes in size 2, that is their choice – nobody is forcing us to buy, or try to wear, them. Clothes are made in sizes 0, 2, 4 and 16, 18, 20 etc for a reason, that reason being, there are people

those clothes actually fit. Yes, gasp again; believe it or not, it is true!

RAFAEL BONACHELA LITTLE DID RAFAEL BONACHELA KNOW WHEN HE WATCHED MICHAEL JACKSON’S THRILLER VIDEO AS A CHILD IN SPAIN THAT IT WOULD LEAD TO A PROFESSIONAL DANCE CAREER. LONG BEFORE THE MOVIE

BILLY ELLIOTT, RAFAEL WON A LONDON DANCE SCHOLARSHIP AT AGE 17 AND SPENT THE NEXT 20 YEARS DANCING IN ENGLAND BEFORE LANDING THE PRESTIGIOUS ROLE OF ARTISTIC DIRECTOR AT THE SYDNEY DANCE COMPANY. CAROL SHERIDAN CAUGHT UP IN RAPHAEL AT MELBOURNE’S SUMNER THEATRE IN SOUTHBANK AS THE COMPANY LAUNCHED IT’S MUCH ANTICPATED PRODUCTION, INTERPLAY.

admit, I have always loved dance. When I was young I used to dance. I had no future as a dancer, and I always knew that I had no future as a dancer, but I recently spoke to someone who had me feeling that I could get up on the table and chasse and gancho with the best of them. It was only a few days before the Sydney Dance Company was about to open their latest production at the Sumner Theatre in Southbank, Melbourne, that I had the privilege of meeting the company’s artist director – Rafael Bonachela. I was already excited about seeing the production – Interplay – that was offering Melbourne audiences the chance to see Australia’s finest contemporary dancers performing works from three prodigiously talented and internationally acclaimed contemporary choreographers Rafael Bonachela, Jacopo Godani and Gideon Obarzanek. But after speaking to Rafael, so infectious was his enthusiasm and passion that I felt I could be one of

I

those who were performing. How does someone become so passionate about what they do that they so deeply inspire others? How did Rafael discover dance in the first place?

“For me, I wasn’t exposed to it, I just loved it, and it was in me. I was a kid, very young, when I saw Michael Jackson doing Thriller on television; it was like a 10 minute video. I was like ‘Oh my God’. I was copying the choreography.

Then I saw Fame. It was serious and I thought, ‘Oh my God, you can go to school and learn to dance!’ So then, that was it,” said Rafael about his discovery of dance. “My favourite thing would be to make a dance. I would get my girlfriends and force my brothers - I have three younger brothers - to be part of the dance group. There are pictures of them in leotards! I would make dances to pop songs. I made a dance to Thriller, I made dance to Michael Jackson and Madonna, whatever it was at that point. I didn’t know it was called choreography.” Rafael was born in Barcelona, Spain, but in the 1980s learning to dance, particularly for a boy, was not commonplace. At the age of 15, when his parents were at their ‘wits end’ with him, they decided to pay for Rafael to go to weekly jazz classes. He was the only boy in the class, but his teacher said that he stood out from the rest, he had talent. That was all it took, Rafael started going to classes every day. “I became obsessed; I got a scholarship to go to London when WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

I was 17. It was great because I wasn’t the only boy in the class. I had role models (and) there were other boys who were better than me, so I had to get better. At my (London) school, you did everything, tap, jazz, contemporary, ballet but after a few months I thought that contemporary dance was my thing. It was a big gap from my first lesson to realising that I would give all my efforts to contemporary dance. “I remember doing my first audition and getting a job for a contemporary dance company not knowing what it (contemporary dance) was, I thought it was just quite weird, but it was a job so I took it. I spent 20 years in London and I did my career there, but it was against all odds because I am a ‘pre Billy Elliott’ boy. “I always think there is a pre and a post ‘Billy Elliott’ time, and the post Billy Elliott time is much better as even parents don’t feel so isolated because their boy child wants to dance. It is more accepted.” Rafael was never taught choreography, but his exposure to some of the world’s greatest WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

choreographers when he was a dancer allowed him to refine his skills. This led him back down the path of ‘designing dance’, just as he did a child. “I was very lucky to get a job in Rambert (Dance Company), which would be the ‘Sydney Dance Company of Britain’, for 12 years and be exposed to the work of some of the greatest choreographers that was my choreography school.” Being a dancer and then moving into the field of choreography is not necessarily a natural path, there are

schools such as the VCA (Victorian College of Arts) where you can learn the art of choreography without learning to dance. “Choreography is about curiosity, about wanting to see things in a different way, about wanting to get more out of people, about ‘what if’,” explained Rafael. “I have this game where I say, ‘Yeah, I am happy with that, but what if?’ It’s not that it’s being done incorrectly, it is constant questioning. Some people are not interested in that, some people are interested in being told

what to do and they are very good at being told what to do. You look at them and they are amazing, but there is no curiosity there. “I think for me, it was a natural progression, because I was making dances before I learnt how to dance. There are great choreographers who were never dancers, but then you get great dancers who make terrible choreographers. It is a different part of the brain that you engage. “Of course, it’s amazing if you get a good choreographer who was a good dancer before, but some choreographers who were never dancers are great - they achieve a lot because they don’t know that some things are impossible, so they push people to do the impossible. When I know something is impossible, I am not going to ask them (to do it), so I am limited by that.” Rafael’s passion, creative mind and expertise set him apart and landed him the job as Artistic Director for Sydney Dance Company, a role he loves and takes very seriously. “We are called Sydney Dance Company because we are in Sydney, that’s our home and

“I got a scholarship to go to London when I was 17. There were other boys who were better than me, so I had to get better. ” that’s the name that we have but I consider us Australia’s national company of contemporary dance, because we are the largest one. This year we are commissioning eight new works, five of them by Australian choreographers and the rest by European choreographers. It’s a big responsibility to

introduce dance to as many people as possible, high quality dance.” It is also a big responsibility for him to draw the best from his dancers, to push them to what they would have thought impossible limits. “I think they want to be pushed and the only way for them to

become better artists and to grow is by pushing. I am not a fascist; my approach is a very different one. I give everything, so I expect everything and if I don’t get everything, then I will tell you, but only because I am giving everything. I don’t impose fear, they can talk to me, I hope they can, and I always encourage dialogue. If anyone has any problems please come to me, don’t let it brew. I am there to get the best out of them, they are there to get the best out of me, so it works both ways, but I do push them. There is a great responsibility in pushing the art form forward.” Rafael’s internationally recognised talent has seen him work not only with contemporary dance at the highest level, but also with artists from popular culture, such as Kylie Minogue and Tina Turner. Such collaborative efforts reflect the inspiration he finds and utilises from culture today. Rafael was named winner of the dance category for The Monthly’s 2013 Arts Awards and listed as one of the (Sydney) magazine’s top 100 Most Influential People in 2012 for his efforts to popularise dance since taking on the job of artistic director with Sydney Dance Company, and as curator of Australia’s international festival of contemporary dance, Spring Dance at the Sydney Opera House. He was named in the 2012 Dance Australia Critics Survey for the Most Outstanding Choreographer and Best New Work for 2 One Another. This work won the Best Ensemble Award in the 2012 Green Room Awards and the 2013 Australian Dance Award for Outstanding Achievement in Choreography and Outstanding Performance by a Company. In February 2013, Rafael was honoured with an Officer’s Cross of the Order of Civil Merit by His Majesty the King of Spain.

His acclaimed awards can be attributed to his passion for dance and choreography and his dedication to all members of Sydney Dance Company. “We are 16 dancers in Sydney Dance Company and I always say that there are only 16 jobs, 16 very precious jobs, unlike the ballet where you have 80, so you can share the workload. For me, everyone needs to be amazing. Everyone needs to be able to stand on stage by themselves.” www.sydneydancecompany.com

his movie by Paramount Pictures has gained itself a lot of varied reviews and I suppose that means your thoughts on the movie Hercules are dependent on your reasons for viewing it in the first place. It is said that the supplies of ‘pec oil’ plummeted as the great muscular hero, Hercules, arrives on the big screen glistening in seminudity. It took lead actor, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, eight months of gruelling training for his muscles to be of the herculean proportion required for the role of Hercules. The film is directed by Brett Ratner and the producers are Beau Flynn, Barry Levine, and Ratner, with Peter Berg, Sarah Aubrey, Ross

Fanger, and Jesse Berger serving as executive producers. Along with Johnson, Hercules stars Irina Shayk (Megara), Aksel Hennie (Tydeus), Barbara Palvin (Antimache) and Ian McShane (Amphiaraus) Whilst it is said to not follow the true fables of Hercules too closely, and is not the most memorable of films, it is a humorous blockbuster that is thought to be worth its weight in gold. Haunted by a sin from his past, Hercules has become a mercenary. Along with five faithful companions, he travels ancient Greece selling his services for gold and using his legendary reputation to intimidate enemies. But when the benevolent ruler of Thrace and his daughter

seek Hercules’ help to defeat a savage and terrifying warlord, Hercules finds that in order for good to triumph and justice to prevail, he must again become the hero he once was, he must embrace his own myth, he must be Hercules. The plot doesn’t have any great depth, so if you are looking for an easy watch movie that has plenty of battle scenes fought by oiled up muscle bound bodies, this might just be for you.

What can you do that nobody else can? hen you’re in business for yourself, you’re selling yourself - you are your product. Without you, there is no business. This is a given. The best businesses out there do things differently to the competition; they innovate, have a different product, make things or act a different way. As an example, Lamborghini makes the wildest-looking superfast cars on the planet, and have done since the Countach in 1974 (earlier models weren’t as wild). Therefore, teenage boys have had pictures of Lamborghinis on their walls, and adults who think like teenage boys buy the cars. A wild-looking supercar is their unique selling position, USP. Other manufacturers have come along and built faster cars, McLaren and Bugatti to name a few... but they don’t look as wild - this is unique to the Italian firm. People have USP’s too, it just takes a while to find them. I was chatting to a makeup artist and we got talking about our businesses; how we are our brand and I asked what her USP was. She said she’s passionate, loves her work, has been doing it for decades, and is very good at what she does. But this does not make her unique. There are other makeup artists who can say exactly the same things; in fact, I’d wager that most makeup artists would say the same things. To come up with your USP, you really need to dig a little deeper (and avoid clichés like the plague!). Putting my friend on the spot, I asked her to think of stuff which makes her unique. The first ideas put forward were all well-worn promotional PR blergh. I casually brushed each aside saying that it’s not unique - there are 1000 other people who can say exactly the same thing.

But then we scratched the surface a little and found some gems. There were some really really big events she’d worked at, as an invited principal. Some events that are so big, in fact, that people would happily donate a kidney to be a part of. Now we were getting somewhere... The USP evolved from previous work performed. This can make a person unique if they are well-travelled, and have worked for numerous ridiculously high profile companies. But how to put that into a USP

“The best businesses out there do things differently to the competition; they innovate, have a different product or act a different way”

and not sound like a name dropping bragger, that is the big question one we couldn’t really answer at that point in time. As was clearly evident, it’s hard work trying to figure out what makes you unique to everyone else doing the same job as you are. For some photographers, it’s a little easier - just go off and win AIPP Australian Professional Photographer of the Year and then you can use that as a very unique way to promote yourself... for a year. But what if your industry doesn’t have a well-recognised award system? If you’re a model, you can try Australia’s Next Top Model - but if you want to retain your dignity, it may be wise to try something else. In the modelling profession, you need to have the right look and body shape for the category you are modelling in, but so do a lot of other people. What makes models unique is the ability to do stuff other than modelling. If you can look really pretty whilst riding a horse, in your undies, underwater or in space then that is a really unique talent that instantly propels you to the top of the casting pile when a creative director wants a lingerie model riding a horse underwater or in space. But bringing it back down to earth a bit, if you play a range of musical instruments then this could be one of your USPs. It always looks silly when you hand a model a saxophone

and it’s the first time they’ve ever held one - they just look awkward. But give that same instrument to someone who plays and it becomes an extension of their body. For proof of this, head on over to YouTube and take a look at Lindsey Stirling’s video Crystallize.

She is so extremely confident with the instrument that she can play whilst performing ballet and other contortions. This is a USP. Hopefully this has encouraged all the small business owners out there to have a bit of a brainstorm about what makes them unique. It’s difficult, it takes time - but it’s one of the most important branding exercises you can do for yourself. And if you get hopelessly stuck remember: You’re unique - just like everybody else.

eliver Us From Evil was inspired by the accounts of an NYPD Sergeant, Ralph Sarchie, played by

Eric Bana. Sarchie has been investigating a series of inexplicable crimes in the Bronx and finds himself at a bone chilling case at the Bronx Zoo - a mother, as if hypnotized, suddenly hurls her little boy into a lion’s den at the zoo, while a strange, hooded figure looms nearby. Later, strange noises from a basement and other phenomena frighten a family in the middle of a dense urban landscape. Archaic Latin writing and strange symbols are discovered in several locations, opening a mystery too frightening to discover. What is coincidence? What is imagined? And what is linked together in a sinister chain? Assigned to the 46th Precinct in one of the toughest neighborhoods of the country, Sarchie has witnessed behavior on the outer edges of inhumanity, and it has begun to darken his soul, to the

point of affecting his relationship with his wife, Jen (Olivia Munn), and their young daughter, Christina (Lulu Wilson). But when the increasingly troubled Sarchie and his police partner Butler (Joel Mchale), a sardonic ex-Army Ranger always ready for a fight, are summoned to investigate a bizarre incident, the events which follow will test the Sarchie’s beliefs. A later meeting with an unconventional Jesuit priest, Mendoza (Edgar Ramírez), who is educated in exorcism rituals finds the unlikely duo of Sarchie and Mendoza fighting demonic possessions. Bana and Ramírez deliver top quality acting in their roles, probably the best acting I have seen from Bana to date. Unlike many other movies of this genre, you are in the ‘plot’ from very early on and the superb sound effects and music have you feeling the ‘creepy vibe’. Yes, there are some holes in the

story line, but why do you go to a horror movie in the first place? To be scared! Don’t go to this movie if you are going to look for inconsistencies or authenticity, if you want to be scared and sitting on the edge of your seat, this movie really delivers.
