Non un semplice accessorio, né un complemento di stile, ma un vero e proprio simbolo, l’indicazione di uno stato d’animo, di una trasgressione o di un vero ideale, ecco come può essere definito il gioiello moderno, se necessario definirlo; non più oggetto di valore materiale quanto un’espressione della propria personalità che viene orgogliosamente ostentata. Oggi più che mai, non è una cosa che si possa imbrigliare tra i confini stagionali dettati dalla moda. Difficile categorizzare il meraviglioso mondo dei gioielli artistici contemporanei perché ormai definibili come voli pindarici nel mondo sconfinato dei materiali e delle forme, altrettanto difficile valorizzarli per il loro contrastante uso di materiali nobili e non. L’aspetto è mutabile e non classificabile, non affiancabile a correnti artistiche come avvenuto fino ad oggi. È un dato di fatto che il gioiello contemporaneo trasporti con sè tutta la storia antropologica, sociale ed artistica dell’oggetto stesso. Guardando il più moderno dei gioielli, come quelli fatti per esempio con le più tecnologiche stampanti 3D e i materiali più impensati, stiamo in realtà guardando la storia del mondo, la storia di una società che si è evoluta negli anni, attraverso guerra e pace, attraverso conquiste e sconfitte. Una storia che ciclicamente ripresenta problemi e soluzioni a questioni che si incontrano al cambiamento di un’epoca. Migrazioni di massa, guerre, rivoluzioni industriali, ogni epoca ha visto almeno uno di questi avvenimenti sconvolgere gli equilibri di intere nazioni, ed ogni sconvolgimento ha portato con sè fermento in tutti gli ambiti, compresi quelli artistici in cui possiamo inserire l’arte orafa, contaminandone gli stili. Un grido nel marasma di una società sempre più di corsa è un gioiello che cattura l’attenzione di chi è aperto e pronto al cambiamento. Not just a simple accessory nor a fashion detail but the expression of a personal mood, a real symbol for transgression, or an ideal: this is how the contemporary jewel can be defined, if required. The jewel is not just something that conveys the idea of material value, it says something about your personality. Nowadays more than ever, the jewel isn’t bound to the season trends, in fact, the contemporary artistic jewels are now very difficult to categorize, they can be defined as Pindaric flights through the boundless world of materials and shapes. Often they cannot be classified, nor related to artistic movements, and, since they often combine precious materials with very poor ones, it’s also difficult to give the right value to the object itself. It’s a matter of fact that the contemporary jewel bears with itself the anthropologic, social and artistic history of the object. By looking at the modern pieces of jewellery, as for example the ones realized through the 3D print techniques and made of the most unusual materials, we are looking at the world’s history, the story of a society that evolved by the years through war and peace, conquests and defeats. A history that is periodically proposing problems and solutions to different issues occurring during the end of ages. Mass migrations, wars, industrial revolutions, each epoch saw at least one of these events upsetting the balances of entire nations. Any of these changes brought development in any social sector, including the artistic ones that comprehend the goldsmith art. The jewel catching our attention is the yell coming from a person inclined to the new in our chaotic and

Non è così semplice tracciare la storia del gioiello e non è nemmeno questa la sede per farlo, ma è chiaro che si è arrivati a sancire un confine ormai inesistente tra arte, gioiello e bigiotteria, attraverso un susseguirsi di correnti, tendenze e mode di un oggetto che si intreccia con la storia del costume e della società per diventarne simbolo. Un collier ricavato da lavorazioni incredibili di un copertone, racchiude dentro di sè un valore che volendo può superare quello dell’oro, non tanto in termini economici, quanto in termini sociali, non è la semplice lavorazione di uno scarto, quanto la riqualificazione di un materiale che una volta persa l’utilità potrebbe addirittura diventare dannoso, ecco che la combinazione tra arte, tecnologia, e coscienza green porta alla nascita di oggetti straordinari il cui status non è più quello che viene evidenziato dal valore intrinseco dell’oggetto, quanto dall’unicità dello stesso. Opere d’arte trasportate nel quotidiano in un museo che è il mondo, prescindono dal materiale con cui sono costruiti, i preziosissimi diamanti, il solido oro o ancora il ricco platino vengono spodestati dalla più umile carta riciclata, gomma rigenerata, rame riplasmato, cuoio e smalti, riproponendo gioielli di altissimo livello superandone il valore puramente materiale per cedere il posto ad un concetto di preziosità totalmente nuovo. E proprio la vastità di possibilità che caratterizza il nostro secolo ci porta a voler in qualche modo raccogliere le informazioni per dare un ordine alle cose, ed ecco che, nonostante le difficoltà sembra comunque ancora possibile trovare un fil rouge per raccontare questa storia in continuo cambiamento. Un contenitore in evoluzione, una scatola magica, un cubo di Rubick; si ha l’impressione che un progetto come quello di Artistar nasca in modo naturale, in seguito all’incontro di persone preparate e che amano l’arte, il design e ovviamente i gioielli e la loro esuberante creatività, ma si capisce subito che dietro al tutto c’è un progetto studiato, una ricerca accurata ed un intento ben preciso; un pool di esperti in più settori accomunati dalla passione che decidono di offrire un

frenetic society. It’s an unconventional way to make the people aware that you are taking part in this crazy run toward the unknown. It’s not easy to tell the history of jewellery through the different ages and this is not even our aim. But it’s clear that boundaries are always less marked when it comes to define an object that is deeply intertwined with the history of costume and society. On the contrary, there is a slight difference between art, jewellery and the costume jewellery through numerous trends. A necklace coming from the incredible processing of a tyre, can be even more precious than one made of gold, not in economic terms, but taking in consideration its social value. It’s not just the processing of waste material, but the requalification of something that lost its utility with the risk of becoming even unhealthy for the whole society. This object represents the mixture between art, technology, green awareness whose value is given from its being unique.These are creations that find their place in a daily life museum in which are exhibited artworks that forget the substance of which they are made: the precious diamonds, the gold, the rich platinum are substituted by the more humble recycled paper, regenerate rubber, reshaped copper, leather and enamels. Very high level jewels characterized by a totally new idea of preciousness. The topic of contemporary jewellery as a whole is very difficult to treat, but the huge knowledge possibilities of our century help us. Nowadays we have the possibility to collect a lot of information that give order to things. This process makes it possible to find a track to follow in order to analyze the always developing world of jewellery.An always evolving box, a magic container, a Rubick’s cube; Artistar was born following the meeting of well-prepared people with the passion for art, design and creative jewellery of course. Behind this spontaneous aggregation of people, there is a deeply studied plan and

luogo, ormai non più solo virtuale, in cui gli incontri sono tra i più frizzanti. Protagonisti del settore artistico e del gioiello trovano in questo contenitore fatto di mostre, concorsi, workshop, il luogo ideale per la condivisione. Si è venuto così a creare un network in costante evoluzione in cui la parola d’ordine per farne parte è creatività, diventando fonte di conoscenza e scambio in un mondo moderno che non lascia scampo a chi decide di vivere negli schemi lasciandolo nella sua oscurità. Assolutamente al passo con i tempi il progetto asseconda il fermento e la voglia di conoscere mettendo in campo strumenti e occasioni in cui i talenti possono confrontarsi. In un momento storico in cui tanti mezzi e tante possibilità vanno di pari passo con il crescente numero di persone capaci e la voglia di sapere e di conoscenza, forse ci si è resi conto che in alcuni casi manca una guida, non un minimo, ma un massimo comune denominatore che convogli il fermento culturale in un fiume di idee che non ha avuto eguali nemmeno nei periodi storici più illuminati. Chiunque ha la possibilità di cercare, scoprire, capire ed imparare, ma è in questa giungla comunicativa che realtà come Artistar trovano quella giusta combinazione di possibilità e opportunità condite dal buon gusto. Questo nuovo volume di Artistar Jewels 2016 è un contenitore in evoluzione, non un semplice catalogo, né una vetrina artistica quanto più un cubo di Rubick dell’artigianato del gioiello. Dipende da come si guarda, da come si sfoglia e da cosa si cerca, ogni volta avrà un aspetto diverso, ogni volta stupirà con nuove combinazioni e nuove prospettive. Non è dunque possibile dare una definizione di ciò che questo volume riporta, gioielli, opere d’arte, connessioni, ispirazioni o forse un viaggio attraverso le evoluzioni del gioiello di artigianato. Un’avventura nelle infinite possibilità espressive che l’arte orafa ha messo in campo negli ultimi tempi in cui arte, tecnologia e comunicazione sono incatenate tra loro.

In so doing, it is created a constantly growing network whose keyword is ‘creativity’, it’s a knowledge source and exchange in a modern world that leaves in the darkness who decides to follow the rules. It’s a very contemporary project that satisfies the curiosity of the public and gives the participating talents the possibility to meet the recipients of their art through different occasions conceived exactly for this purpose. In an historic period in which the possibilities, the talented people and the desire of knowledge grow at a faster pace, there is the necessity of a guide able to drive the cultural development in one direction. Anyone has the possibility to research, find and learn but in the communication jungle of our society, realities as Artistar give the right combination of opportunities and possibilities with a pinch of good taste.The new volume Artistar Jewels 2016 is a container always developing; not a simple catalogue, nor an artistic display cabinet but it’s more like a Rubick’s cube of the jewel craftsmanship. Any time it will surprise the reader with new combinations depending on the perspective adopted by the observer. For the above mentioned reasons, it’s not possible to give this book’s contents a definition: jewels, artworks, connection, inspiration or maybe a travel through the craftsmanship jewel evolution. An adventure expressing the contemporary jewellery’s infinite possibilities lately expressed in a period when art, technology and communication are woven together.

Semi-rigid necklace entirely hand-shaped. Thin coral branches made of brass are intertwined and create a woven structure that recalls the ocean and its Great Barreer Reef.

Necklace composed of scaramazze pearls, characterized by three or five pearls series with alphabetic letters that can be mounted in any position to write the name or the sentence desired.The pearls are inserted thanks to cotton wire, while the letters can be made of steel, silver or bronze.

Unique jewel manufactured by using construction and lostwax casting techniques. The necklace is modular and can be used in multiple ways. The concept is inspired by the shape of cherries fruits. In Japanese culture cherry fruit means virtue, and it is a common ornament on samurai outfit.

The necklace replicates the curves play of the stylized branches and flowers shapes. The jewel structure is characterized by sort of infinite features because it is created in a specific way that is perceived as a long wire without any beginning or end, thanks to the special hook latch.

Entirely hand-made necklace constituted by two different types of silver wires: rhodiated silver and silver 900. From the woven wires arises a pattern representing stylized flowers. Here petals and leaves exchange their shapes by being tied to a unique chain play.

Pezzo unico realizzato con la tecnica di costruzione. Il disegno è fatto a mano, così come il taglio del motivo poi rifinito in maniera patinata. Fonte d’ispirazione sono i fiori di ciliegia che nella cultura giapponese simboleggiano la transitorietà. Può essere indossata in due modi.

Necklace made of thirtysix pieces running on a flexible shaft. This flexibility allows to give a new shape to the jewel as it follows every movement of the body. Since this jewel is entirely hand-made, it’s a one-of-a-kind piece that can’t be replicated without differences among the items.

Questo gioiello ci parla dei numeri primi e della loro possibilità di viaggiare dall’uno all’infinito. In particolare, l’artista esprime le idee racchiuse nella citazione di Mark Haddon: “Penso che i numeri primi siano come la vita. Sono molto logici ma non si riesce mai a scoprirne le regole”.

This jewel is about prime numbers and their possibility to go from one to infinite. In particular the artist expresses the ideas conveyed by the following quotation by Mark Haddon: “I think that the prime numbers are like life. They are logic but one can’t find out their rules”.

Artistar Jewel l’evento milanese che si propone di valorizzare e divulgare la creatività legata al mondo del gioiello, lo scorso dicembre ha decretato i vincitori relativi alla seconda edizione. Selezionati tra oltre 200 creativi internazionali i vincitori sono stati premiati il 19 dicembre durante la serata inaugurale presso la Fondazione Maimeri di Milano, da sempre teatro dell’exhibition. Giornalisti, creativi, designer, fashion blogger, addetti del settore e cultori della materia hanno potuto ammirare tutti i lavori in gara. L’asticella della perizia artistica e creativa del contest, ogni edizione, è sempre molto alta. A orientarsi all’interno di questa scintillante creative jungle sono stati chiamati esperti del settore quali Enzo Carbone, fondatore di Artistar Jewels, Gigi Mariani artista e vicepresidente di AGC Associazione Gioiello Contemporaneo, Carla Riccoboni designer e Barbara Uderzo artista e designer. La giuria si è impegnata a valutare il concept, le capacità tecniche, l’abilità nell’utilizzo dei materiali scelti e quella nel mixare materiali inusuali nell’ambito del gioiello, infine a esprimere un’opinione sulla presentazione e il relativo packaging di prodotto. Tre le categorie da premiare: artista orafo, designer orafo e artigiano orafo di ricerca. Artistar Jewel, the event that gives visibility to the jewellery creativity, last December proclaimed the winners from the 2015 edition of the project. After being selected among more than 200 international creative talents, winners were awarded on the 19th of December during the inauguration evening at the Maimeri Foundation, theatre of the exhibition from the beginning of the project. Journalists, fashion bloggers, experts in the jewellery sector and jewellery enthusiasts had the possibility to admire all the artworks that took part in the contest. As always, this event is marked by a very high level of artistic competence and originality. Professionals in the sector have been involved in the contest in order to shed light in this creative Jungle: Enzo Carbone, Artistar Jewels founder; Gigi Mariani, artist and AGC Associazione Gioiello Contemporaneo vice president, Carla Riccoboni, designer and Barbara Uderzo, artist and designer. The jury evaluated the concept, the technical capacities, the ability showed in the processing of materials and the skills in mixing unusual materials. The jury gave also its opinion on the product presentation and packaging. Here are the categories to be awarded: goldsmith artist, goldsmith designer and research goldsmith artisan. Two artists were selected as winners for the category goldsmith Artist. Ching-Chih Wu, that graduated from the Department of Crafts and Design of the National Taiwan University of Arts, was chosen thanks to his jewels poetic concepts and to his capacity to combine materials and techniques referring to different times proving to be a very expressive artist and a very mature expert in the sector. The British Lionel Theodore Dean, pioneer of the precious metals 3D print, was chosen thanks to the contemporary value of

Per la categoria artigiano orafo di ricerca è stato assegnato il primo premio ex aequo a due artiste: Julia Toledo artista brasiliana, designer e creatrice di Contemporary Jewellery e la canadese Catrie formatasi a l’École de Joaillerie di Montréal, per la forma e le tecniche realizzative e per gli abbinamenti tra i materiali utilizzati. Dato l’elevato livello dei gioielli presentati, i giurati hanno deciso di assegnare delle menzioni speciali ad altri artisti meritevoli. Per la categoria designer orafo, dunque, sono state assegnate due menzioni all’italiano Dario Scapitta, jewellery designer che ha frequentato l’Accademia di Brera a Milano e Jantine Kroeze che ha frequentato l’Amsterdam’s School of Gold and Silversmiths. Per la categoria artigiano orafo di ricerca riconoscimenti sono andati a Natalie Sevikian laureata presso l’International Institute of Gemology ad Anversa, Johnny Niños laureato presso il New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University e alla salentina Laura Forte cha ha studiato presso la scuola di arte orafa applicata e presso l’Ente di formazione IRIGEM. A seguito di un’attenta analisi di tutte le creazioni, la giuria ha deciso di assegnare una menzione d’onore fuori concorso a Barbara Muller, designer brasiliana che si ispira alla bellezza della natura e al caos urbano per creare i suoi pezzi, per la forte identità culturale dei territori di provenienza dell’autore e per la capacità di esprimersi in forme decisamente contemporanee. Artistar 2015 si riconferma, dunque, con le sue one-of-a-kind creations, una fucina di talenti. E noi in attesa di raccontavi il meglio dell’edizione 2016.

Marijke De Goey is the winner for the category Goldsmith designer, she is a Netherland designer that studied at the Rietveld Academy, and now she manufactures sculptures and innovative jewels. She was awarded with the first prize thanks to her project quality and formal coherence expressing the deep artistic research performed by the author. The research goldsmith artisan category has two winners: Julia Toledo, Brazilian artist, designer and contemporary jewellery maker, and Catrie, graduated from the l’École de Joaillerie di Montréal. Both were awarded thanks to the unconventional jewellery shapes, the realization techniques and unusual materials combination. Considered the high standard level of the jewels, the jury decided to give special attention to other worthy artists. Two honourable mentions were given to the category goldsmith designer: Dario Scapitta, a jewellery designer that attended the Accademia di Brera in Milan and Jantine Kroeze, that studied at the Amsterdam’s School of Gold and Silversmiths.
