34TH SEASON As the Board President of Capital Repertory Theatre, I’m extremely excited to welcome you to our 34th Season! For more than three decades we’ve created meaningful theatre with an authentic connection to the community. This season will undoubtedly be another great one that we look forward to sharing with you! On behalf of our Board of Trustees, staff, and actors, thank you for your continued support of our beloved artistic institution. TheREP plays a leading role in the ongoing revitalization of downtown Albany and the community at large. Your critical support makes this possible. Why are the Arts so important?

“We have to stop thinking about arts and culture as simply nice-to-haves. They are just as important as well-maintained roads and bridges. By giving us the chance to stimulate our minds with new ideas and experiences, they give us the opportunity to become more creative. Arts and culture are infrastructure for the mind.” – Todd Hirsch The arts are not ancillary. They, and theREP, as one of the largest arts organization in the region, are economic assets that form the bedrock of a successful community. Our diverse programming including the subscription series, On-The-Go! Educational tours, and summer acting camps, foster the creativity and innovation that is the foundation of our growing regional economy. With an annual budget over $2 million, a history of producing more than 5,000 performances and employing more than 1,500 professional artists, theREP returns more than 83% of our budget directly back to the local community. We bring vitality and commerce to downtown Albany in the form of more than 75,000 diners, shoppers, and tourists. We’re an economic engine not only for the entertainment district on North Pearl Street, but for the City of Albany and the Capital Region as a whole. It’s our hope that you enjoy a fantastic performance here at Capital Repertory Theatre. If you do, please consider a gift to our Annual Fund. Tell a friend, neighbor, or business colleague about the great experience you had, and remind them of the rich cultural offerings in our region. Ticket sales cover only a portion of the cost of bringing great professional performances to the stage and impactful educational programs to the classrooms. It’s through the generous support of patrons, subscribers, friends, and donors like you that we are able to present the great art and entertainment you’ve grown accustomed to. On behalf of all here at the theatre, thank you again for your support! Enjoy the show, and come see us again soon!

CITY OF ALBANY OFFICE OF THE MAYOR 24 EAGLE STREET ALBANY, NEW YORK 12207 TELEPHONE (518) 434-5100 Dear Friends, It is my pleasure to welcome you to Capital Repertory Theatre. We are thrilled to have worldclass theater in the heart of downtown Albany thanks to theREP. The Theatre has a rich history of producing excellent entertainment, giving us more than 5,000 performances since its inception in 1981. Oscar Wilde once said, “I regard the theatre as the greatest of all art forms, the most immediate way in which a human being can share with another the sense of what it is to be a human being.” This year, theREP will live up to our expectations, bringing fabulous theater to general audiences and students throughout the region. We’ll experience many human emotions as topnotch actors make situations come alive for us on stage, and we’ll enjoy shows from classics to a World Premiere! The lineup includes the comedy-drama OTHER DESERT CITIES, the enchanting and inspiring THE SECRET GARDEN, the delightful comedy HOW WATER BEHAVES (World Premiere), the sidesplitting SOUVENIR, and an elegant and stirring rendition of HAMLET. Please join me in applauding Capital Repertory Theatre’s Producing Artistic Director, Maggie Mancinelli-Cahill and the Capital Repertory Theatre Board of Directors for their dedication to theater and the arts in Albany. Thank you to all the audience members, actors, designers, directors, technicians, sponsors and friends for helping to make truly spectacular theater possible in the City of Albany. It couldn’t be done without all of you! We invite you to come early or stay late to enjoy culinary delights from around the world right here in downtown Albany. We wish theREP continued success, and hope you enjoy the show! Sincerely,

Kathy M. Sheehan Mayor, City of Albany

BEHIND THE CURTAIN Welcome to fall at theREP! What is it about autumn? Each year I find myself wanting to settle in with spellbinding books, movies that make me cry -- and plays that help me think about life. Perhaps it’s all those years of returning to school -- being trained to trade the beachwear for sweaters and jackets and turn attention to going inside to think a bit… And so, today we gather for a uniquely American story about family and history – perfect for fall. I saw OTHER DESERT CITIES on Broadway, but revisited it after I took a road trip to California a couple of years ago. Traveling through the desert country that is so indicative of the life of this play, one cannot help but be thankful for a car with a good cooling system and an engine that is not going to break down! Driving in the air conditioned comfort with the radio blasting some vintage rock and roll, watching the thermometer register 118, I was struck by the man-made marvels that are the desert cities of Southern California. Jon Robin Baitz sets his play in Palm Springs, an oasis of privilege that sits amid vast, dry expanses of cracked earth and highways. Everything in this isolated paradise says that this is the good life. But even here, no one can hide from the truth that lies just under the crusty surface of the land, ready to be exposed with a kick in the dirt – or the mighty pen! The events that impact the masses, so far away, trickle down – or up – to the power brokers of history and get buried in the souls of their sons and daughters. Settle in for a good yarn, just right for the changing season! Keep an eye out! Mark your calendars for the first weekend of November for the NEXT ACT! New Play Summit 3. This three-day look at new plays that may be on our stage over the next few years has become more popular every year. Take a look at the accompanying article in this playbill! Early Bird subscribers – you have prizes! Remember that as a bonus for getting your order in early, you qualified to receive tickets to NEXT ACT! Once we have the weekend’s events and schedule solidified, those who qualified will be asked to confirm their attendance. For NEXT ACT! tickets and passes – Keep checking our website for the most up to date information. The titles have just been chosen and we’re working hard to nail down the schedule of events. We’re sure you won’t want to miss anything in the long weekend! (see the article in this playbill for more details). Always… thank you! To everyone who has returned as a subscriber and to all of our new subscribers: Welcome! Please check your emails for information about all the great things coming up from theREP and plan to bring a friend – or a young person -- to our beautiful holiday production, THE SECRET GARDEN! Until next time,

DRAMATURGY The Next Voice you hear ...

Selected from more than 300 submissions

NEXT ACT! NEW PLAY SUMMIT 3 BY MARGARET HALL TheREP’s NEXT ACT! New Play Summit 3 is definitely not to be missed! Now in its third year, the summit has grown into one of the theatrical highlights of the fall season. Mark your calendars for November 1 – 3! Selected from more than 300 submissions, NEXT ACT! features readings of two never-beforeproduced plays, heralds a first look at William Kennedy’s new full-length play, THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD, and signals the return of THE GOD GAME playwright, Suzanne Bradbeer, with her new play, NAKED INFLUENCE. The popular FIRST 15 returns, featuring excerpts from the top 5 finalist plays in a fun, interactive workshop. New to the proceedings this year, NEXT VOICES will introduce short works written by younger playwrights, to be read by a cast of seasoned actors.

To get your theatrical taste buds salivating, here’s the juicy insiders preview of what’s to come. THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD by William Kennedy – The Phelan family (featured throughout Kennedy’s Albany novel cycle) has gathered for matriarch Katheryn’s funeral. Vagabond and prodigal son, Francis Phelan (Ironweed) returns home to make sure she’s really dead and stirs up the deep history and secrets of the family. In Kennedy’s masterful literary style, the family curse, Irish songs, illicit affairs and crazed relatives are woven together in a story that changes everyone forever.

BLANQUITA by Zack Calhoon – Strindberg’s MISS JULIE gets a fresh update in this sexy adaptation set in the American Southwest. When a Senator’s daughter crosses class lines and spends a wild night with the family’s Mexican chauffeur, there are witnesses – and consequences. Peppered with Spanish in a way that lets everyone understand – this spicy tale proves that the classics can have relevance in our world of social media, cell phones and young, misguided, over privileged starlets. NAKED INFLUENCE by Suzanne Bradbeer – Help us welcome back Suzanne Bradbeer, whose world premiere of THE GOD GAME graced our stage in spring 2013. Intended as the second installment in a developing trilogy about politics, NAKED INFLUENCE takes us into the world of politics, pole dancing and damage control.

photos Richard Lovrich

CRIB by Gino DiIorio – The worlds of sports, academics and university politics collide in this engaging potboiler. While battling for tenure, Professor Whitaker accuses the college’s star basketball player of plagiarizing. The battlefield ignites with the school’s protective, influential coach on one side and the professor on the other. As the stakes rise, heads roll and values about race, sex, education and integrity all get put under the dramatic microscope.

Next Voices will introduce short works written by younger playwrights

Remember Early Bird subscribers qualify for complimentary tickets to the NEXT ACT! New Play Summit 3. We’ll be in contact with all those that qualified to confirm attendance. Stay tuned! A complete schedule of event dates, times and ticketing information will be forthcoming. Keep checking capitalrep.org for information!
