With an annual budget over $2 million, a history of producing more than 5,000 performances and employing more than 1,500 professional artists, theREP returns more than 83% of our budget directly back to the local community. We bring vitality and commerce to downtown Albany in the form of more than 75,000 diners, shoppers, and tourists. We’re an economic engine not only for the entertainment district on North Pearl Street, but for the City of Albany and the Capital Region as a whole. Times Union Best of The Capital Region Reader’s Poll The only member of the League of Resident Theatres (LORT) in the fourteen counties of upstate New York, theREP has produced 33 seasons drawn from contemporary and classic plays and musicals, including 23 world premiere productions. In 2012, in association with its managing partner Proctors, the theatre launched a new initiative, the NEXT ACT! New Play Summit, to further enhance its core mission to create new works that reflect the changing populations and values of upstate’s Tech Valley region. theREP has been recognized by the Times Union Best of the Capital Region Readers Poll as the “Best Theatre Company” in the Capital Region consecutively for the last six years. WEATHER Capital Repertory Theatre does not cancel or reschedule performances, nor offer refunds due to inclement weather. ASSISTIVE LISTENING DEVICES are available free of charge. We also utilize T-Coil technology. The Box Office or House Manager will be happy to help you find the best solution. Please let the Box Office know at time of purchase if you have any assisted listening device needs. DOCTORS AND PATRONS ON CALL, please leave your pager or cell phone with the House Manager, as well as your seat number, so that we may quickly locate you. EMERGENCY EXITS are clearly marked by lighted red EXIT signs. Please note the nearest exit upon taking your seat. In the event of an emergency, please move to the nearest exit in a calm, orderly fashion. SPECIAL SEATING is available for persons who require wheelchairs and others requiring non-step seating. Please advise the Box Office when ordering tickets. Upon arrival at the theatre, ask for the House Manager.
RUSH TICKETS may be available 15 minutes prior to curtain. A price seating can be available at the Smart Seat price, subject to change and availabilty. LATECOMERS will be seated at the discretion of the House Manager. You may need to be seated in an alternate location from your ticketed seats until intermission. YOUNG CHILDREN under the age of six are not allowed in the theatre. COATS may be hung in the designated area inside the café and along the back hallway near the restrooms. SMOKING is not permitted anywhere in the building. RESTROOMS are located on the main floor and are handicap accessible. Additional facilities are located downstairs. THE CAFÉ beverages and snacks are available one hour before the performance and during intermission. SNACKS are not permitted in the theatre, beverages are allowed, hot beverages requre a lid. Alcoholic beverages purchased at the café may not be taken outside the building.

BEHIND THE CURTAIN
Welcome to 2015 at theREP! Ushering in the New Year with a World Premiere play is an auspicious occasion for a regional theatre. As most mothers will tell you, giving birth is part pain, perspiration and inspiration - and most playwrights might say the same thing about bringing a new play to life! The gestation period varies, but most new plays go through years of readings and workshops before getting a chance to breathe on a regional theatre stage. Sherry Kramer’s HOW WATER BEHAVES came to our attention in the spring of 2013 after percolating to the top of more than 300 submissions for our NEXT ACT! New Play Summit. I loved the play because it’s a comedy that is about something: our values and relationship to money as Americans. The play received a reading in November 2013 and garnered very positive reactions from the Summit audience and the artistic team that worked on the play. Author Sherry, a veteran playwright with an impressive resume of produced works and honors, turned out to be a wonderful colleague with strong ideas and instincts, matched with the skill and willingness to work on the script. After NEXT ACT!, Sherry went to work refining the script through the spring of 2014, culminating with a workshop production at Bennington College, where Sherry teaches Playwriting. Rewrites continued throughout the summer. In October, more than a year after we first read the play, the production was cast. In November the cast, director, and playwright gathered in NYC for a reading of the newest script. A few tweaks later, the script was distributed to the actors. Voila! Rehearsals started in late December and that’s the end of the story. Not. Now the work in the rehearsal hall begins. The actors dig into the characters and add their perspectives. Playwright, director, designers, and cast become partners as the play moves from two to three dimensions. And now, the process adds still more new partners: You! Our audience. HOW WATER BEHEAVES will continue to change and grow as it lives on theREP stage. Part of the play now belongs to you because as an audience member, you are a critical part of the labor that goes into birthing a new work! So, relax, breathe deeply and enjoy the ride!
DRAMATURGY All’s well that ends ... Well! BY TERESA CAMPBELL, ASSISTANT TO THE DIRECTOR
Did you know that this expression, besides being the title of a comedy by William Shakespeare, is also one of the dozens of everyday sayings coined by Shakespeare himself? It’s true! From wearing your heart upon your sleeve (OTHELLO) to wild goose chases (ROMEO AND JULIET), to classic knock-knock jokes (MACBETH), Shakespeare was more than a playwright and poet; he was also an inventor. Something else the Bard invented was the modern comedic form. Shakespeare was a master at humor, and his comedies were meant to entertain and engage everyone, from the groundlings standing next to the stage, to the royals in box seats behind the action. He did this by creating scenarios that appear in many of his comedies, such as characters in disguise, characters falling in love with the wrong people, and star-crossed lovers who want to be together but cannot for one reason or another, until the eleventh hour. These situations and more appear in ALL’S WELL THAT ENDS WELL. Though not one of Will’s most popular comedies, it has stood the test of time through its classic comedic structure. Set in France and Italy, ALL’S WELL THAT ENDS WELL is a story of one-sided romance. Helen, orphaned daughter of a doctor, is under the protection of the widowed Countess of Rossillion. In love with Bertram, the countess’ son, Helen follows him to court, where she cures the sick French king of an apparently fatal illness. The king rewards Helen by offering her the husband of her choice. She names Bertram; he resists. When forced by the king to marry her, he refuses to sleep with her and, accompanied by the braggart Parolles, leaves for the Italian wars. He says that he will only accept Helen if she obtains a ring from his finger and becomes pregnant with his child. She goes to Italy disguised as a pilgrim and suggests a ‘bed trick’ whereby she will take the place of Diana, a widow’s daughter whom Bertram is trying to seduce. A ‘kidnapping trick’ humiliates the boastful Parolles, whilst the bed trick enables Helen to fulfill Bertram’s conditions, leaving him no option but to marry her, to his mother’s delight. So, how does ALL’S WELL THAT ENDS WELL relate to the World Premiere you’re here to see? Well, our playwright, Sherry Kramer has paid homage to the Bard by interweaving many of his comedic techniques into this very modern tale. The title of this Shakespeare play serves as the inspiration for Nan and Steve’s fictional charity in HOW WATER BEHAVES, and the causes and effects of that one little white lie, cascade in a way that gives a humorous and chaotic nod to our Bard of Avon! In between the laughs, be on the lookout for Shakespearian elements in this 21st century piece. Good luck! Oh, and if you want to find out where the phrases “Brevity is the soul of wit” and “In the mind’s eye” originate, come back this later season for a certain Shakespeare tragedy that follows a doomed prince of Denmark…

She taught acting at the National Theatre lnstitute at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre Center in Connecticut. Maggie received a Directors Project Fellowship from the Drama League of New York and holds an MFA in directing from Columbia University.
