Proudly leading the way in circular packaging
It is our great pleasure to unveil the winners of the 28th European Carton Excellence Award.
Another year has gone by, and we’ve received a record number of excellent entries. This award celebrate the best and brightest that the cartonboard industry has to offer and this year was no exception.
The entries we’ve seen this year are a testament to the industry’s unwavering commitment to innovation and sustainability. They showcase the incredible potential of cartonboard to create packaging solutions that are not only visually stunning, but also environmentally responsible and meet consumer’s increasing demand for sustainable packaging solutions.
All the entries demonstrate how cartonboard is a powerful tool for brands to connect with consumers on an emotional level, while also addressing the urgent environmental challenges of our time. They inspire us to continue pushing the boundaries of what is possible with this versatile and sustainable material.
Horst Bittermann Director General, Pro Carton
It’s been my passion to work on these awards for the last three years. With every year that passes, I’m consistently impressed with the amount of innovation, excellence, and creativity that is displayed among the entries.
We received more than 74 entries for the European Carton Excellence Award, 889 entries for the Pro Carton Young Designers Award, and 106 for the Pro Carton Student Video Award – a 20% increase on 2023.
This was the first time that we have exceeded a total of 1,000 entrants. The increase this year showcases the upwards trajectory of our industry and the renewed passion for sustainable packaging.
As sustainability becomes an increasing priority for businesses across the globe, the sustainable packaging and cartonboard industry will continue to grow and thrive.
However, it’s not only businesses that are looking to change their ways. In our 2024 ‘Rethinking Packaging -A Consumer Perceptions Study’, 62% of European consumers said
that a sustainable lifestyle had become ‘more important’ or ‘very much more important’ over the last two years.
Considering this, the need for innovative and sustainable packaging solutions is becoming ever more crucial. And the cartonboard market will be at the forefront of this vital movement.
These awards aim to not only shed light on the exceptional work and strides being made in the cartonboard industry, but also to inspire future generations of packaging designers. By recognising and celebrating the best in the business, we hope to drive innovation, sustainability, and creativity forward.
Once again, and on behalf of all of us, I say a big thank you to 1,000-plus entrants and to all the sponsors of this year’s award programme.
The growth that we’ve seen in the number of entries highlights the widespread talent, enthusiasm, and commitment of this global community.
Working on these awards, I’ve been simply blown away by the entries. The creativity, ingenuity, and excellence on display has been truly inspiring. Therefore, I would like to start by congratulating all those involved in creating the entries.
We’re also thrilled to share that the entries have poured in from diverse establishments and organisations across the entire continent, with an impressive 155 universities participating from 25 different countries. The growth that we’ve seen in the number of entries highlights the widespread talent, enthusiasm, and commitment of this global community. It’s a commitment to driving a more sustainable future through the development of innovative and eco-friendly packing solutions.
We know that the potential of cartonboard to create a positive impact is immense. However, to unlock this potential, the entire industry must unite in its efforts. From the innovative designs showcased here, to the broader regulatory landscape, every stakeholder has a vital role to play. Together, we can build a more sustainable future.

This design just exudes sophisticated simplicity. It is a fittingly elegant package - clean, white, minimalistic, with a smooth sliding feature that enhances the opening experience. The sliding mechanism creates a sense of occasion, offering a refined and high-end feel.
This is a clever design. The three jars of sauce are very heavy, yet the packaging is minimal while offering impressive strength and stability. It effortlessly holds all three jars and proves that innovation can deliver the necessary strength without compromising sustainability.
This is an ingenious solution to reduce the use of unsustainable packaging materials. The design maintains the product’s round and circular shape, creating a visually appealing and ergonomic experience for consumers. Overall, this design is thoughtful and an ecofriendly choice.
This design instantly captured the attention of the jury. With its stunning aesthetics, the designer clearly placed shelf appeal and customer experience at the heart of the creative design process. The packaging is beautifully crafted, ensuring it stands alone as a gorgeous gift, even before considering the luxurious products inside.
This is the perfect example of ‘finding a gap in the market.’ Typically, the product comes in thick plastic. The Pro Carton Young Designers Award (PCYDA) and the Pro Carton Student Video Award (PCSVA) hold a special place in my heart, as they connect nearly 200 universities across Europe and provide a platform for young talent to shine. This year, the PCYDA received a recordbreaking number of submissions, highlighting the renewed passion for sustainable packaging. It was truly inspiring to witness the innovative thinking from the next generation of creatives.
Newly introduced for 2024, we’re offered the winning PCYDA students the opportunity to present at the ECMA Congress. This allowed them to pitch their design processes, material selections, creative ideas, and more with an audience of 250 knowledgeable industry representatives. Our goal with this initiative is to bridge the gap between the future of the packaging industry and its current experts, opening doors to job opportunities and placements for these emerging talents.
A big thank you to our PCYDA and PCSVA 2024 sponsors: Van Genechten Packaging, Billerud, Umka Board Mill, MM Group, Stora Enso, and Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG. A special mention to Metsä Board, MM Group, and Van Genechten Packaging for generously supplying our students with a range of free cartonboard materials earlier this year, and Smurfit Westrock for providing cartonboard for our certificates. This year, the Pro Carton Young Designers Award entries can only be described by one word… ‘WOW’. We are running out of superlatives for these awards due to such amazing and creative talent being displayed.
In an Olympic Games year, it would be appropriate to say that the bar has yet again been raised - we had close to 900 entries - a new record. We were delighted to see so many entries with consumer experience at the heart of the concept. We must always remember who our ultimate customer is. Furthermore, it was immensely satisfying to see how many entries were virtually ‘ready to go’ to market – an exceptional achievement.
Student entries are certainly the most challenging for us judges. This is because they are using a blank ‘canvas’ to create a new concept and we must take the time to understand the detail and idea. But quite frankly, it is an absolute pleasure to do so.

These are the filmmakers of the future
This year, the jury was particularly impressed with the bumper crop of submissions - nearly three times the amount in 2023 and a new record.
We would also like to call out the range of different concepts and techniques used by the students. We saw lots of creative and technical skills employed through greater use of music, dialogue, editing, and appropriate employment of AI.
The narrative work remains strong with ideas that highlighted the general virtues of cartonboard, with a greater focus on strength, generational shift, and lifecycle aspects of the base product. This made the judging process more dynamic and challenging with robust debate between the jurors as we looked to narrow the field of submissions to a shortlist. We sat for a record length of time to determine the winners and the finalists.
This year’s PCSVA was the most competitive to date and a new benchmark has been set for future years. The jury sends its heartfelt congratulations to all the entrants as well as the ultimate winner.
We are optimistic for the storytelling and filmic qualities to improve at pace and to see many new solutions emerge in 2025.

What are some of the advantages of folding cartons?
Cartonboard is one of the world’s most popular packaging materials. The reasons for this are very clear. The material is:
Renewable - cartonboard is produced from trees grown in sustainably managed forests across Europe.
Recyclable - cartonboard fibres can be recycled at least 25 times and the recycling rate in Europe is 82%.
Biodegradable - cartonboard will natuarally degrade and cause no harm to the environment.
Sustainable - more trees are planted than harvested in Europe - 3-4 for each tree harvested.
Brand communication - cartons can be printed in unlimited colours, with special effects, that enhance a brand’s packaging.
Product protection - cartons protect products and consumers and can help reduce food waste.
You can learn much more from our website.
The finalists and their teachers will be invited to the Pro Carton and European Carton Makers Association (ECMA) Awards Gala in September 2025, where you can meet people from across the cartonboard packaging industry - including those responsible for marketing their businesses.
