ne of the joys of writing this column every month is finding increasingly more random tangents to go off on to get the point across. A case in point arises when thinking about the next generation of security/fire installers and what business owners can do to help with the skills shortage that has been publicised for some time. Here we go then with a tangent and a sweeping statement... Every generation is more technically skilled than the one that camebefore it. It’s true - I’ve spent about ten minutes thinking up this theory, but I reckon it’s correct no matter what walk of life you apply it to. Take for example (tangent alert) the world of guitarists. When I started playing the person we were all copying was Eddie Van Halen meaning that by the time we were 13 yearsold we could play solos that the generation before us couldn’t even imagine let alone try pulling off when they were young. Today my generation of players includes the likes of John Petrucci who uses seven string guitars, often detuned, as a matter of course so the kids growing up now have his ilk to copy, so by the time they are 13...etc. Technical ability is heavily influenced by what you see around you and who you learn from. The same goes for lots of other skills plus of course the technology now is much more advanced than we had to play with. The youngsters coming through education today see touchscreens, networks and other IT features as standard day-today fare while we have lived through it’s development from scratch and are probably getting to the ‘dinosaur’ stage. What we must do with this new talent is nurture it to the point where it brings benefits for all parties in the industry. Just like the budding guitarists of 2021, the youngster looking at a career as a security engineer needs someone to recognise his/her potential and give them a chance. Taking on an apprentice is your way to guarantee the future of the industry, plus there are financial as well as business benefits for you too. Whether you learned on the job or were an apprentice yourself, you need to help bring on the next generation of people just like you to eventually replace people just like you. Have a read of the interviews we did with Kevin Faulkner of Banham Academy and Ali Enser of Reliance High-Tech this month to find out how and why you should get involved with bringing new talent to the sector - or if you can’t find your glasses listen to the interviews on the PSI podcast instead. And if you don’t know how to do that just ask someone aged around 18 to show you. Andy Clutton EDITOR

THE BOTTOM LINE Stanley Security publishes its 2021 Industry Trends Report Stanley Security has published its annual report looking at security industry trends, challenges and opportunities to look out for in the coming year. The 2021 Industry Trends Report is based on a survey of 2,404 respondents across Benelux, France, the Nordics, United Kingdom and United States. Respondents represented organisations of all sizes. Top of the trends list is the use of security to mitigate health and safety risks, which is a direct response to the global pandemic. It has resulted in a fundamental shift in the way organisations leverage security solutions to help them ensure the health of their people and visitors. The pandemic has also led many organisations to deploy threshold management solutions – such as health questionnaires, temperature and face mask screening systems and wellnessbased credential activation – that automate processes, enforce policies and integrate with other security and business systems. The balance of the focus has moved from visitor management to managing any individual crossing an organisation’s threshold, but without significantly impacting throughput and operations. Health and safety protocols – and the new social distancing norm – has accelerated a long overdue transition to touchless and mobile-first security solutions which will no doubt gain in popularity even more in 2021. The rise of cloud solutions and the XaaS delivery model is a clear trend that has emerged, as more organisations have come to realise that cloud solutions are a lot more resilient than an on-premises service, leading to the accelerated adoption of both cloud-hosted solutions as well as remote services. This is creating more demand for the as-a-service (XaaS) delivery model. Further trends highlighted in the report include the increased demand for outsourcing of security management; leveraging security data to help improve processes, increase efficiencies and make more informed business decisions; and an increased demand for flexible, scalable and integrated solutions that enable organisations to quickly adapt to changes in circumstance. Commenting on the report, Dan Hindley, Stanley Security UK Commercial Director, said: “Security solutions are more critical than ever to a business’ operations. As organisations continue to face an unpredictable future, we’ll see an increased demand for systems that can help them mitigate risks and future-proof their operations. Additionally, there is a pressing need to manage these systems remotely so that they can have 24-hour coverage – increasing the need for services, such as remote guarding and remote video verification to take over the duties of physical security guards.”

The interview that gets the facts from the top This month Simon Banks talks to Richard Hewes, Founder & Chairman of Hewes Security. The NSI Gold accredited company operate throughout Essex and the South East of England. How does it feel to be celebrating 60 years in the Fire and Security industry? After starting back in 1961, I never in all my thoughts and ambitions would have imagined creating such a legacy and a true family business. This year, and in our 60th year of trading, I am still heavily involved in the business and enjoying the latest challenges we are facing. Can you tell us a little more about the family business? My eldest son Matthew joined me in 1989, straight from school and immediately showed an eagerness to be involved with installations and the entire organisation. Now he is our Managing Director, overseeing all aspects of the company and always looking for new and innovative methods for our improvement. My youngest son Nigel, after attempting a career in professional football, decided to join the company as a service engineer, and after a few years tried his hand at sales. After day one and clinching an order on his first attempt, he got the bug. He is now our Sales Director, going out every day looking for new business and managing several sales executives. You could say we are a fully-fledged family business, not forgetting my brother-in-law who is our Head of Accounts and has been for the last 36 years. The latest addition to the team is my grandson, Joshua, who recently became an apprentice engineer, wanting to start a career in the industry and looking to learn it all! How important have apprenticeships been for the business? We have supported apprenticeships for many years, and I have seen firsthand the great opportunities they present to young people. Our operations manager Steven, at the age of 19, was our first apprentice. He has now been with our team for 17 years! My grandson, Joshua, is the third generation to join our company. He started his apprenticeship in June 2020 and has been enjoying his training with Skills for Security as well as the onthe-job learning with our experienced engineers. Recently, he completed his very first installation. Another proud day, but also a clear demonstration that he is already making a significant contribution to our business. How has Hewes Security managed its growth and expansion over six decades? We have an ever-expanding office and team to support our growing customer list, whilst we have always made time and effort to help the local community in any way we can. This, combined with all the family commitment and effort over all these years, is the reason we are still here, still trading and still at the forefront of a unique and always-evolving industry. I have also been passionate about embracing new technologies that can enhance what we offer to our customers. A lot has changed since 1961 when I began on a service team in the East End of London, transporting 1.1/2-volt batteries that needed to be replaced at every service visit as there were no mains operated panels! We are now installing fantastic systems utilising wireless mesh technology and high-quality cameras. The hard graft has disappeared, but it’s still as exciting as ever.

YOU SAID IT! "Just wanted to thank you again for your assistance with our first DualCom Pro install! It was surprisingly simple and the “My Base” interface is a really nice bit of kit." Matt Brunger (Mayan Security Ltd) – Email – 14th Jan

When using the TexecomPro app, you can access specific device information by search, scanning the barcode on the device packaging or from a lookup table. The device cover is held in place using a plastic quarter turn screw that in the unlocked position allows the cover to be slid downwards and removed. All connections are made into a seven-way terminal socket that is clipped into the base. This connector can be angled or easily removed from the base for ease of connection and is large enough for a standard terminal driver to be used. All connections are clearly identified, and their designations are also indicated on the box on a tab that can be removed for reference. The seven connections for these devices are: - + A B C D E with - and + for the 12 volt power supply input, A and B are the Alarm output and C and D for the Tamper connection. Connections A and D can be used for the combined Alarm and Tamper single pair end of line value. The Tamper connector D on the PCB is slightly shorter than the others ensuring this will disconnect first if the connector is prised from the board. E is identified as the RLED connection by taking this to 0v is used to remotely enable the Walk-Test LED from the panel if the enable switch in the device is turned off. Power supply for all models is 12 volt +- 25% with a current demand from 12mA to 17mA depending on type. Each device has the same base plate with angled sides for corner or flat wall mounting with a variety of screw-hole knock outs and upper and lower cable entry points. For the ceiling mounted variants, a circular clip on cover is provided.

duration for single alarm activations averaged just over 3 seconds with a minimum of 2.38 noted. The alarm is output from a surface mounted optically coupled MOSFET relay so is well isolated from the device processing, local power noise and avoids contact “bounce”. A Texas Instruments mixed signal microcontroller provides the advanced processing of the pyro sensor output with a secondary microcontroller dedicated to the k-band microwave detector in the dualtech devices. The PIR lens is held in place by a circular ring that can be removed to allow changing between long range and curtain versions. The detectors all perform well and match their specification for 90° (85° for dualtech) angle and range. The front panel mounted electronics means that device service replacement or upgrade change-out is a quite simple task.

A two-pole dual in line switch on the P15 and Q20 is used to control the walk test LED status on/off, and to enable the pet immunity or standard G2 modes. When using the pet immunity mode, a plastic lens obscuration slider at the bottom of the assembly must be moved up to complete the setting. The P15 is stated to accommodate pets of up to 35kg while the Q20 and D20 are up to 20kg. The D20 device has a four-pole dual in line switch with the same first two settings as the other models and the third switch to switch between normal mode and a Texecom CloakWise mode that can be used to improve detection of intruders attempting to temperature mask their presence. The fourth switch is unused on this model. The D20 also has a potentiometer to allow adjustment of the microwave sensor’s range. This is set by default at mid-way.

Operation & performance

NOTE: This PSI Product Test was carried out by an independent third party, not editorial staff. The manufacturer had no input in the review or the final result

14

With power applied the device goes through a start-up routine during which the walk test LED flashes at a 1Hz rate. In the case of the P15 and Q20 this is a distinct light blue flash for approximately 50 seconds, for the D20 there is a softer 1Hz fade in and out for around 30 seconds. Once the routine is finished the detector is operational and depending on the position of the walk-test switch will display its light as the alarm area is entered. For the P15 and Q20 devices this will be a blue indication for alarm. The D20 shows a Green LED for PIR detection, Violet for Microwave detection and Blue for both being triggered. The alarm output is only activated when both technologies are triggered. The alarm output

The detectors all perform well and match their specification for 90° (85° for dualtech) angle and range. The front panel mounted electronics means that device service replacement or upgrade change-out is a quite simple task A “Branding” option is available to place company information and / or logos on the devices using a printed label produced by Texecom under an optional clip-on clear cover. This must be removed prior to opening the device for maintenance. Product leaflets can be downloaded in pdf format with space to insert installer logo and contact number information. The 68-page pdf manual covers the range of devices and is reasonably presented, however, the pagination in many sections is not good with large diagrams taking up full pages with the title alone on the previous page, i.e., p31/32, p50/51 and odd justification on p68. Hopefully, this will be improved in a later release.

Conclusion The ease of connection with a range of switchable, built-in EOL resistor values simplifies the installation process. While it is unusual to have to register with the manufacturer before gaining access to basic installation instructions, this is a one-time undertaking. The potential for device branding will likely be appealing to independent installers.

he KL15 KitLock from Codelocks is a keyless access solution for personal lockers and cabinets. The mechanical lock features an anti-vandal handle and is suitable for indoor and outdoor applications. Designed for personal use and (ideally for storage lockers) the KL15 allows the user to set their own unique four-digit code and change this as often as they wish. The code is entered via four 0-9 wheels (allowing for up to 10,000 combinations) and the red and green indicators denotes whether the locker is locked or unlocked. The KL15 also features a code retrieval function, allowing the user to determine the combination with a code finder key, in case of a forgotten code. The company has tested the unit in high and low temperatures, in dry and humid conditions, and has also been salt-spray tested. The KL15 can be either surface or flush mounted. When surface mounted, the ergonomically designed trim plate also acts as an easy grip handle.

The KitLock unit is supplied ready to fit doors up to 22mm thick with the thickness of the door determining the back plate choice. The lock can be fitted flush or surface mounted, either for a new installation or to replace an existing mechanical lock. For a surface fit, the Surface Mount Fixing Pack is required – the test unit supplied for this review came with the Flush Fixing Pack which determined the product test installation option. To begin fitting a flush mounted unit, a hole measuring 20mm x 83mm needs to be cut out. The simplest way to do this is to mark out the area (checking that it will allow clearance for the cam to work) in the required orientation of the unit; the lock supplied was a KL15 vertical with right-hand or left-hand options also available. Then use the typical method for cutting a hole –

Codelocks – KL15 Vertical

drill out the four corners of the area, then use a hacksaw or jigsaw to cut from hole to hole, creating the rectangle. The lock is then inserted and held in place using a backplate. Depending on the thickness of the door there are two backplates to choose from which are secured in place using the two supplied fixing screws. The cam can then be attached using the cam fixing screw – be sure to attach the cam in the correct orientation to match either locked or unlocked position on the unit. The lock is now fitted so the factory preset code of 0-0-0-0 can be changed.

Changing the code The code can only be changed with prior knowledge of the existing code. Once this has been applied to the unit and the lock is opened (showing the green position on the handle) the reset slider can be moved left. Turn the bezels to show the new required code then slide the rest button over to the right and the new code has been set. Simply turn the handle to lock the unit and randomly turn the dials to hide the code. When the new code is then applied the handle will turn and the locker/cupboard can be opened. The lock code can be changed as many times as is desired. Should there be a problem with the code, such as it has been forgotten or if there is an emergency, a master key is available separately that can be used to identify each number of the code to reveal the four digits and open the lock.

Conclusion This is a really simple and inexpensive basic security solution (costing £25 ex VAT) for lockers and cupboards and the types of applications that do not require more feature-rich electronic locker and cabinet locks. Furthermore, it would take a professional installer only a matter of minutes to fit a KL15. Overall, the unit is fitted easily, looks good and is straightforward to use.

All-IP signalling solution is launched in UK

BT Redcare has launched Essential IP, a new all-IP alarm signalling solution. Connected via broadband, the SP2 grade Essential IP notifies Alarm Receiving Centres (ARCs) of path faults within 60 minutes. Introduced to simplify customers’ transition from legacy public switched telephone network (PSTN) reliant systems, Essential IP is able to connect via ethernet or Wi-Fi and has eight standard alarm channels and dial capture on-board, and data sent to ARCs is encrypted e2e with AES. Common serial connection capabilities – RS232 and RS485 – means Essential IP is compatible with a range of alarm panels, so customers do not have to purchase, and installers don’t need to fit, entirely new systems. redcare.bt.com

External detection with anti-masking protection

MotionProtect Outdoor from Ajax Systems is a motion detector with a two-phase algorithm for protection against false triggering, pet immunity featuring anti-masking system. An outdoor detector is an easy target. During the day when the system is disarmed, intruders may damage the sensors or block their view to gain an advantage in trespassing at night. To prevent the cases of sabotage, Ajax has equipped the MotionProtect Outdoor with a tamper button and an anti-masking system that can remain active 24/7. The anti-masking system in MotionProtect Outdoor calibrates automatically by analysing the surrounding area when mounting the device. Then, if an obstacle appears in the field of view of anti-masking sensors or if they are painted, the detector notices sabotage and raises the alarm. Moreover, a sensitive tamper is immediately activated if someone attempts to dismount the detector from its mount, the SmartBracket. In addition, detectors can be installed with a hood to protect the anti-masking system from rain and snow. ajax.systems 20

Tester measures available network bandwidth SignalTEK 10G from Ideal Networks is a handheld Ethernet tester designed to measure the maximum bandwidth available on networks, identify bottlenecks and find ways to increase bandwidth without the need to replace data cabling. With an ever-increasing demand on LAN networks from bandwidth hungry services, such as video streaming, video conferencing, CCTV cameras and Wi-Fi access points the extra pressure on networks can lead to downtime and lost productivity but replacing all cabling to improve bandwidth is cost-prohibitive for many organisations. SignalTEK 10G enables installers to prove the system will support the bandwidth required before adding technology. idealnetworks.net

EDITOR’S CHOICE The security industry is busy and complex, so it’s easy to miss new products and services as they get lost in day-to-day activities. Every now and again, certain products grab our attention so here we take a look at a few of the products we think you won’t want to miss this month.

4G solar panel kit enables remote surveillance Hikvision has launched a 4G Solar Panel Kit to enable the protection of remote assets in hard to reach places by proving a security camera that runs on solar power. The kit (DS-2XS6A25G0-I/CH20S40) includes a 4G camera, a solar panel, a battery, and a bracket. This means providers can deliver connected security to scenarios such as agriculture and temporary monitoring of construction sites. The issue of having no power or network is no longer a problem, with the kit providing power to the camera through the solar panel and connectivity through 4G. It sends data to a communication station and then on to the security monitoring centre, where it can be managed using HikCentral Professional or the HikConnect app. hikvision.com

INTERVIEW

Uncover your IT Achilles Heel This month we speak to Alistair Enser, CEO at Reliance High-Tech, to find out how a “quick fix” with IT security could lead to problems for installers e are more reliant than ever before on networked technology, at home and at work. Our security systems are connected and integrated at unprecendented levels, yet there are still security issues despite our IT knowledge. Every new generation is more IT-savvy than the one before it, but that doesn’t mean we are automatically less at risk from IT security problems either. We caught up with Alistair Enser, CEO at Reliance High-Tech, to find out how he sees the world of networked technology and where there might be room for improvement for installers.

W

With modern security systems invariably being networked are you concerned about the IT security of installations? It is safe to say that all IT teams are quite rightly concerned about their networks, now more than ever, especially given recent cyber threats and the increasing opportunities for malicious activities following the hasty surge in remote working. This is supported by recent statements from the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) raising awareness to both business and consumers alike over the increased threats. Our systems designs and implementations need to be very carefully considered as a simple mistake can be extremely costly

www.psimagazine.co.uk

As an industry we have improved significantly and started to address the common issues faced by obsolete IT systems, but we have far to go. I believe many installers and endusers still need to truly understand and accept the real risks they face. Just because it works, doesn’t mean it’s correct and secure. For example, our ability to recognise Windows 7 as an unsupported platform and security risk is pretty common; what is less common is knowing that a fully compliant system running an older version of a SQL engine is as much a threat as Windows 7 and there are many, many access systems out there on SQL. Equally any system is only as strong as its weakest link. In this world of integration my team at Reliance High-Tech often sees IOT devices connected to or bridging security systems to other technology which are of unknown pedigree or security. As our use of interconnected systems, especially through the use of the internet and cloud, be it VPN or other types of connections increases, awareness that all components of our solutions are vulnerable is essential and we must have our teams fully aware and engaged to highlight, action and address these issues appropriately. What previously has been utilised as a ‘quick fix’ can now be the Achilles Heel in the system

Alistair Enser, CEO of Reliance High-Tech

which opens up corporate, personal and private information to be compromised. What would be your top tips for installers regarding networked systems and preventing issues?

“Not everyone in your team is an expert! Being able to setup a home router or a couple of IP addresses simply does not cut the mustard”

Keeping it simple, the best tip is to learn lessons from which team is best placed to answer the IT questions, and as any installation is the output of a system design, ensuring the design is correct, operationally secure and the IT and information are security compliant, while being commercially viable. Not everyone in your team is an expert! Being able to setup a home router or a couple of IP addresses simply does not cut the mustard. The IT industry recognised many years ago that the skillset required to address these gaps required a “splitting of the technology stack” rather than expecting a single individual to be a subject matter expert in all fields. As part of this it is vital that any installer determine the correct individuals within the customer’s team to engage and then match them with their own qualified and technically capable individuals. If these people don’t exist, then invest in training and use external support from IT professionals. Finally I would say that our final challenge is changing the perception that once installed our job is done. The importance of maintenance and monitoring is more important than ever before. You wouldn’t run your laptop without Windows updates or virus checks, yet many security systems are literally years out of date and that is extremely worrying. We need a change in mindset both from an installer perspective and the end user. All systems that are sold must be maintained properly, it is crucial. This isn’t about polishing a camera lens and removing cobwebs, its about reviewing global vulnerability registers, proactively patching and ensuring the system is secure not just operational. Do customers have a part to play and could installers help them with it? Absolutely, this is an increasingly knowledgeable area from all customers as technology becomes more every day the expectations of our systems equally increase. Referring back to my previous comment, our customers are increasingly engaging IT teams, information security teams and Data Protection Officers as part of standard engagement and while compliance registers help mitigate concerns over new projects, the importance of “who” carries out the updates be that a security engineer

24

or an IT engineer, “how” they are completed, i.e. are these delivered to a governed standard such as ISO27001 and finally “when” i.e. scheduling automatic updates or tying them to other network works is crucial. Co-ordinating reboots of key critical components requires careful thought and consideration as well as “frequency”. The core element here is awareness: 1) Understanding when there is an issue and raising it 2) Knowing when you have reached your limit – right people right job Installers are key to all of these; know your customer, know your job. Do you think there are any risks involved with having a single solution for surveillance, fire, access, intruder etc? Unfortunately this is never a simple Yes / No question as each customer’s requirements differ and the integrity of a single “one system that does it all”, while very capable, is very much dependant on the sub systems that require connection, the technologies and connectivity options etc. Looping back to our opening question, are all subsystems suitable to be networked and are there valid reasons to not have these systems on a corporate network? This is where we have to engage with a customer and really understand what they are looking to achieve and where they are today and why. In principle having a strong “head end” system is very viable and can be very successful, there can be a multitude of risks and our view on how we implement these has changed significantly as some customers require an single operational head end, where interactions can be made. However other customers are looking for collated information dashboards where, through use of improved data tools, we can collate this with a very different cost effect approach. With the increased adoption of IoT we can see that connecting systems and devices is being increasingly simplified and standardised, introducing a number of IFTTT (If This, Then That) type solutions. These enable a world of sub systems to interact, as such our approach to integrations will continue to evolve and we must challenge ourselves and our customers around delivering on this need.

PSI PREMIER AWARDS

Who will win in 2021?

The 2021 PSI Premier Awards campaign is now underway – and it is up to you to nominate the entries for the competition Hikvision and Pyronix were winners back in 2019. Who will be successful in 2021?

H

ave you used a piece of kit or worked with a supplier that has been mightily impressive over the last twelve months? Do you think that your company’s products and services deserve to be recognised as the best that the sector has to offer? We are now asking installers and manufacturers to nominate the best products and to tell us who gives the best service, support and training for a PSI Premier Award in 2021.

Nominate online The annual PSI Premier Awards campaigns have recognised innovation and the highest achievers

that the industry has to offer from across a number of disciplines for many years. We are now asking for nominations for the products, services and suppliers that those working in the security industry think are the best in the market. After the deadline we will then collate all of the entries and, where necessary, ask a number of installers to give us their opinions on the nominated systems. This will give us a final listing of entries that we know will be the best of the best. The types of technologies we are looking for are those that are different, not “me too” systems

The award categories for 2021

We will be looking for nominations in the following categories. Be sure to read through the definitions to make sure that your entries match the criteria for being a finalist.

PANEL

What are EU looking at? The events of 2020 and the unprecedented global pandemic at least kept Brexit out of the news for most of the year. The national media only really started mentioning the UK leaving the EU as the deadline approached in December, but here we are in 2021, with a deal and out. So what does Brexit mean for installers and suppliers? t was back in 2016 that the nation had its say about our presence in the EU with a final result meaning that there would be a parting of the ways. Putting aside whether you were a Remainer or a Leaver (or you just didn’t know) the fact that the deal for Brexit has finally been sorted at least gives us a way forward. We now have to work through the changes and get on with it after four years of preparation. But what will this mean for the security industry, one that relies on imports for much of its technology? News footage of miles of lorries lined up on the roads outside Dover didn’t do much for the image of the potential future of Brexit even though, at the time, we were still in the EU and delays were actually due to Covid testing, it was all delivered as negative Brexit coverage anyway. For us it will not just be imports and exports that could face new barriers to swift trading, but also our attendance and exhibiting at overseas trade shows - surely all of that will also involve more paperwork than before too. Or will it? If we have learned one thing from the Trump presidency in the US it is that news media outlets nowadays have a clear and obvious bias

I

www.psimagazine.co.uk

and journalists are no longer independently reporting what happens, but offer opinions and statements to suit the narrative of their employers and their politicial leanings. Therefore you can’t always trust what you see on the News and you certainly can’t take the trends on social media as an indicator of reality! So what better way to find out what Brexit could really mean for the industry than to ask the very people that supply us with products if they expect to see any changes. The PSI Panel is in session:

Mark Massie – Fortus UK Since we reached an agreement for a Brexit deal it has meant relatively small changes to our business practices. On a positive, much of our stock is manufactured in China and docks into UK ports, therefore bypassing the EU. Unfortunately, we’re experiencing a lack of information around what additional paperwork and administration tasks are needed to ensure seamless imports/exports. Such is the lack of

understanding that one national courier will no longer deliver to Ireland. How the industry adapts to Covid-19 challenges (again) will give a picture for how it will fare in 2021. The delays that lorry drivers are experiencing at ports is not because of us leaving the EU, but due to them having to be tested for Covid-19. There is also the global shortage of shipping containers due to the storage of PPE. If Brexit was going to affect the industry, one way this might be seen is in the shortfall of skilled installers or technicians settling in the UK as it’s more difficult for migrants to obtain settled status. Ultimately a no-deal agreement would have been much worse. The challenge for the industry is to identify the root cause of the problems encountered – is it Brexit or Covid? Unfortunately, both are happening together and that in itself is causing a double whammy.

David Davies – DVS

Brexit - it finally happened! Admittedly in the final run up when we saw lots of issues with transport not moving into the EU (albeit there where other issues linked to this) it seemed like we could see mass scale disruption to our imports and exports. Some market sectors may well be seeing this, but thankfully so far, touch wood, we haven’t seen much difference in the import of security products other than delays caused by bad weather or seasonal spikes in demand for services and we all hope it continues to be the case that we can bring in product from anywhere outside the UK and also ship where needed without the anticipated disruption that was feared.

“So far, touch wood, we haven’t seen much difference in the import of security products other than delays caused by bad weather or seasonal spikes in demand for services and we all hope it continues to be the case” 30

Whilst there may be some delays, more paperwork, additional checks and process that need to now happen, and these of course can bring their own frustrations, we do hope the security market continues to see continuation of supply of goods so that we can all continue to service our demanding customer base. This is all very new to us all and some are still finding their feet but we need to remain optimistic that products will continue to be available and we can all continue to be as supportive to the process and each other as we move forward.

Jamie Evans – Oprema

In the wake of Brexit in January 2020, questions loomed over the effect of the security industry, specifically focused on installers supply, legislation, and employment. With the future all but shrouded with a heavy fog of questions, answers laid in wait to be discovered as and when, even more so as the world was halted with the impact of COVID. However, with the UK officially leaving the EU single market and customs union in December 2020, and recovery of COVID well set-in motion, post-Brexit now leaves us in a position of momentary wake, providing us with the opportunity to take a step back and consider what the shape of the future when operating outside of the EU. At Oprema, we have always worked with overseas suppliers, so we are well versed in this field as opposed to other security distributors who will be hit harder if they trade solely within the UK and/or EU based. Currently, there are some serious delays at UK ports, and we have been made aware of some container shortages, which is having a direct impact on shipments and freight forwarders. We also noticed a significant impact on UK suppliers last year due to limited production, as a direct result of COVID which we have had to account for by amending our stock levels on all the key brands and products where required, which has also been our main strategy with the Brexit transition period. In terms of the future of the security industry for 2021 and beyond, as we get to grips with operating outside the EU and changes in UK legislation, we believe standards will remain consistent in the shortterm and any drastic changes to take place during that time is best given solutions as and when.

Do you employ apprentices? Many of you may have been an apprentice and know of the benefits, but for those who are unsure of what is involved we speak to the top man at Banham Academy, Kevin Faulkner ast month we reported that Banham Academy apprentice, Elliot Veheary, had passed the End Point Assessment Level 3 for the Fire, Emergency and Security Systems Apprenticeship Standard. Elliot’s achievements marked a significant milestone, not only for his career, but also for the skills training provider as Elliot was the first Banham Apprentice to pass their assessment at the Banham Academy. To find out more about the Academy and to discuss why installation companies should be looking at Apprenticeships we spoke to Kevin Faulkner, Head of Banham Academy:

“16-18 year-olds tend to make up about 45% of the number of apprentices across the country, with a total number nationwide of about 1200 at the moment” 32

How does the Academy work alongside the installation business of Banham? The Academy is part of the Banham Group and we have our own building within the Banham HQ in Earlsfield, London. The Academy was purpose built with workshops, classrooms and e-learning facilities and we have the first endpoint assessment centre for the industry as well, While Banham obviously give their support to the Academy we work alongside them the same way that we do with all our other employers that send in engineers for training. How do you tailor the training to match the requirements of the employers? We try to keep an interactive relationship with the employers to work out exactly why they want the apprentice. For example they might want to future-proof the business and grow their own talent, or if they just want a bit of youthful energy within the business - we work with them to help them achieve the knowledge skills and behaviours that they are looking for. The FESS (Fire, Emergency and Security Systems) Apprenticeship Standard itself was written by employers and I represented the Banham Group at the very first meeting alongside a number of employers where we had a blank piece of paper with all of us chipping in and deciding what we wanted our future apprentice to look like and what we wanted them to know and we created the standard from there. Did you see any trends in the number of apprentices coming through last year? The figures I saw just before Christmas 2020 showed that the numbers for enrolment were down only marginally so it's actually good considering there was a pandemic going on, and if it hadn't been for that I'm sure that numbers would have grown in the year. In terms of the trends we are seeing, 16-18 year-olds tend to make up about 45% of the number of apprentices across the country, with a total number nationwide of about 1200 at the moment. Those aged between 19 and 24 make up another 45% and then those over 25 years old are the remaining 10%. At the Academy we've got just under a hundred apprentices at the moment with a new cohort starting on the 18th of January which will take the total here to over a hundred. We only have two females currently with us at the Academy, which is not a great number out of a hundred apprentices, but it is similar pretty much all around the country. How did you cope with training during the lockdowns because a lot of the work is hands-on? We kept the calendar exactly the same so that whatever cohort was due to come into the

Academy for the week was hosted on Teams for the period. So we had our tutors live on Teams teaching and setting tasks then looking at the tasks and quantifying how the students had done on it and then move on to something else. The practical skills dropped off due to the majority of apprentices being on furlough, so when we picked up again in September last year, we started the task of reassessing all of the apprentices to see how much the practical skills had not progressed forward. Then just as we got towards the end of that and we had a plan to start increasing practicing practical skills again, we went into another lockdown! During the lockdown we were very aware of apprentices' mental health so we have two trained Mental Health First Aiders to provide support when required. What types of security technologies and installations does the programme cover? We have a variety of systems within the Academy and, of course with the Fire, Emergency and Security Systems Apprenticeship Standard we cover the fire pathway and the security pathway within which we've got intruder, access control and CCTV. We have had some very welcome donations from

“We have a variety of systems within the Academy and with the Fire, Emergency and Security Systems Apprenticeship Standard we cover the fire pathway and the security pathway within which we've got intruder, access control and CCTV manufacturers such as Pyronix and Texecom on the intruder side, BTT for access control and Hikvision on the CCTV side. We also have equipment from Paxton and on the fire side we have some Kentec and Hochiki products as well. We have a wide selection of equipment which we can mount onto boards so the apprentices can connect them up and also move them around and plug them into different places within the workshops. We also have a large bay with a false door and window for more complete installations. There is also an e-learning suite in the Academy so apprentices can do their research and we can put them through online training programmes. What is the typical prior knowledge apprentices have when they first turn up at the Academy? As mentioned earlier, about 45 percent of the apprentices are 16-18 year-olds and their knowledge of security systems is pretty minimal but as with anyone coming out of school these

days their knowledge of IP and how to use the Internet is very good which is an advantage. We started a programme a couple of years ago going into schools with equipment to demonstrate it to those about to leave school to try to raise interest in the sector again and we aim to restart that scheme. We've been involved in the World Skills competition which is great to generate interest. I'd say that a lot of the 19-24 year-olds that come in have been to college for an electrical or construction course and then decided that they wanted to get involved in something more specific, like security systems. And then with the over 25s, some of them might be retraining to look at new skills, but the majority of them are in a situation where they want to go through a programme to get a qualification that shows their competence to be able to do the job.

Bear in mind that the government funding is not just for youngsters it can be for anyone. Our oldest apprentice was 44 and he was in the job but hadn't got the necessary skills that the employer wanted so he was funded to go through the programme. Are there any subjects that cause particular problems? There are things that trainees have to learn which are quite sterile, for example they need to know the relationship between current, voltage and resistance so they can look at the formulas and do calculations. Some do find that tough. Fortunately one of our tutors invented something we call an Interactive Hub which features lots of connectors and wires for each apprentice to use when they're doing calculations. Using the kit they can put them onto the board see whether their calculation is correct which is very handy as a lot of the people that come in are "hands-on" learners and like to see how what they are learning relates to the workplace.

Why do you think there is reluctance for employees to take on apprentices? That's a difficult question to answer. I don't often get to talk to employers that don't want apprentices, I get to talk to those people that do want apprentices and they come to us to develop engineer skills. There are lots of statistics that the National Apprenticeship Service has released saying that the majority of employers said that having an apprentice will help develop their skills, help them improve productivity and it will actually improve their service as well. We've had many success stories from our employers where that has indeed been the case. I think it is perhaps a fear of change as to why some employers are reluctant; maybe they have preconceived ideas about young people and could be a little bit short-sighted. But then, at the end of the day, the Covid situation has hardly helped with employers in being able to plan for taking on apprentices. What I'd say to employers that are thinking about apprentices is to actually consider that they could pay quite a large sum of money for an average installer to work for your business or you could get an apprentice and grow your own, better one. How do you get an apprentice? Is there lots of paperwork? It is a very simple process. The first thing an employer has to do is create a digital account on the government website which is very straightforward. Once they have an account, if they haven't got an apprentice in mind they can put an advert on the National Apprenticeship Service website. When they do have an apprentice the employer can choose a training provider and discuss with them how long the course will be and what is involved whether it is day release or weekly block release etc and the training provider would do a skills assessment to calculate the length of time that the person would need depending on experience. The system is a lot easier nowadays and there are some very good incentive payments from the government for example if you take on a 16-24 year-old by the end of March 2021, you would get a £2,000 incentive payment and if the apprentice is over 25 years of age you get a £1500 incentive payment. I say to employers that they haven't got to wait for three years to reap the benefits of having an apprentice; we set ourselves a target that by the end of the first year on our course that person would be able to carry out maintenance and commission a basic system and also be able to assist on any large installation as well. The benefits are not only

www.psimagazine.co.uk

“We are always going to need more skilled people and better skilled people within the sector and I predict that the way forward with that will be through the FESS apprenticeship, which will continue to grow” there at the end of three years, they start to come very quickly. What does the future hold for security and fire training? We are always going to need more skilled people and better skilled people within the sector and I predict that the way forward with that will be through the FESS apprenticeship, which will continue to grow. We now have people completing the End Point Assessment and they are out in the workplace. The skills they've gained during the apprenticeship are actually going to stand them in very good stead and make them stand out from the average installer because they've gone through an endpoint assessment which doesn't just give them a theory test or a professional discussion about their knowledge and behaviours within the sector; over the two days they will go through some very stringent practical tests. They will have to demonstrate that they can work safely in the form of doing a risk assessment, then taking over existing systems that have faults that are programmed into them within the endpoint assessment room. They will need to diagnose those faults and rectify them and do various additions across these systems as well, adding new components to the system. Once they've done all that, they then have to do all the commissioning and documentation associated to it.

AI

AI and the installer in 2021 Just about all of the recent security industry predictions for 2021 that were posted on various media sites put AI at the top of the list. So what’s so good about AI and why should you care? rtificial Intelligence (AI) has been around for longer than you might think. According to a report by Harvard University, it was with the film Metropolis in 1927 and subsequently the Tin Man in the Wizard of Oz in 1939 that put scientists and mathematicians on the road to thinking seriously about robots and AI. In the 1950s boffins such as Alan Turing were firmly on board with the potential of machine learning although it was the quality and cost of computers at the time that held it back. On the other hand, science fiction fans have been sceptical about the merits of AI since 1968. From the moment we saw AI computer HAL 9000 take over the controls of the Discovery One spacecraft on its way to Jupiter we saw how software that ‘thinks for itself’ could be problematic. Of course in reality this didn’t happen in the actual year of 2001, instead we got Windows XP and the Nintendo GameCube. So where are we today? Well, all of the predictions for 2021 security technology include mention of AI and how this year it will see even more growth in the real world. The development and widespread use of AI has been a bit of a

A

slower burn than space fan filmgoers might have expected, but in the security industry the use of analytics and the future potential of adding machine learning has begun to take hold, with Covid-19 proving to be a catalyst for the use of the technology and various systems now available, reportedly being able to cut unwanted alarms by recognising triggers through AI. So as an installer why should you sit up and take notice of AI in 2021? We spoke to Harro Stokman, Founder and CEO of Kepler Vision Technologies to find out why, just shy of 100 years after Metropolis came out that AI is worthy of your attention: “While most people still associate AI with making your Facebook newsfeed completely addictive, IBM Watson winning the Jeopardy! quiz show, or with smarter threat detection in cybersecurity, the rapid development and refinement of this technology has also made it incredibly relevant for camera security systems. Just like with any other technology, a spiralling demand for AI has led to increased availability, lower costs and greater user friendliness. The

potential advantages that these solutions can provide therefore mean that no security professional can afford not to know about what this new technology can do, what it can’t do, and where it is headed in the future. “The most common application of AI in security is in camera surveillance technology – computer vision, facial recognition and person detection all rely on AI/Machine learning to a greater or lesser degree. Here at Kepler Vision we use this technology to look after the wellbeing of humans at night in care facilities. Using computer vision and human activity recognition we are able to fully automatically monitor live video feeds, identify if a patient is struggling, has fallen down or cannot get out of bed, and have our software instantly alert care staff to their situation. “The same technology and the same principles can easily be applied to a security setting. Replace the care facility with any home or business – patients with possible security threats – and discomfort with suspicious behaviour. A simple CCTV system that merely records events is functionally a broken lock, but AI-powered video analysis offers support to security workers by flagging suspicious events in real-time, making them easier to manage and respond to. “A common argument is that existing motion detectors can also provide direct and immediate notifications to homeowners or security staff when used in conjunction with traditional camera systems. That is true, but AI systems do

all of this while greatly reducing the number of false alarms – and with 30% of false burglar alarms triggered by insects or pets, it clearly pays to have a more sophisticated system to distinguish between a routine behaviour or movement and an abnormal one. “To accomplish this, a well “trained” AI system can accurately distinguish between humans and vehicles from wildlife elements and other innocuous objects – while not flagging recognised individuals and vehicles as false threats. This added accuracy has the ability to make a huge difference to security workers’ dayto-day activities by giving these workers back the time spent responding to false alarms – presenting an opportunity for them to spend their time on other core competencies, and allowing them to react proactively rather than retrospectively. “Of course, AI doesn’t simply materialise out of thin air, and “off the shelf ” options do not guarantee the kind of success that you would expect from a bespoke product or solution created by experts in the computer vision space. Some may require special equipment or even specific cameras to operate at full capacity, whereas others can be easily hooked up to existing camera feeds for real time monitoring, with installation and training taken care of by one of these specialist providers. “The use of AI in security however is not without its issues. Data and privacy are by far the biggest challenges – sharing of live feeds, incident reports and any personal data accumulated through the operation of these systems has the potential to put users in violation of data laws if not carried out properly. Any business with AI solutions operating in this space should be adhering to these rules as a matter of course, but data protection is something to consider for any security operator looking to adopt AI as part of a security solution. “As the physical security landscape continues to collide with the digital, the challenge for security installers is choosing the most appropriate tools for the job, and to sort the industry hype from valid value-adds. Even with the advantages that AI aided security systems can provide, we must not lose sight of the human component. Alerts still need to be evaluated and responded to by a living breathing person, just as before. But by combining the two, machine and human expertise AI systems in physical security have the potential to be the most powerful instruments in your security manager’s arsenal.”

Is third party accreditation beneficial? Yes hugely important to our business and it underpins everything we do. We want to work to the highest standards and provide quality for our customers and being third party accredited is the best way to demonstrate this. As we are a franchise opportunity, we can also offer this to people looking to start their own fire and security business which is a huge head start and takes a headache away from them.

Areas of expertise: Fire and security solutions including fire extinguishers, fire alarms, access control, intruder alarms and CCTV

What is the best thing about working in this industry? It doesn’t stand still; there are always new developments, products or services to explore to enhance the fire and security solution to our customers. The dome is based on a 1/2.8” 5MP CMOS sensor with a stated 0.07 Lux colour sensitivity and IR LED monochrome illumination.

Review: A very installer friendly ONVIF compliant external dome camera with ease of set-up and an ability to simplify network cabling when retrofitting for additional cameras, installing two cameras to a single location or when needing to install an adjacent PoE device such as lighting or PIR detection.

Dahua – DH-SDT-5X225-2F-WA-0600

The DH-SDT-5X225-2F-WA-0600 is promoted as a 2MP Starlight IR Dual PTZ external network camera. It is from the Dahua WizMind range and is based on 2 x 1/2.8” CMOS sensors, one with a wide angle view and one with a 25x optical zoom lens. “Deep Learning algorithms” are used to support detection functions such as smart tracking of vehicles or humans with automatic filtering of false alarms. . Review: An interesting ONVIF compliant dome with high sensitivity and capable of tracking subjects while still maintaining an overview of the scene of interest. Good differentiation of targets to track humans and/or vehicles while preventing false alarms.

Uniview – IPC2325EBR5-DUPZ

Promoted as a 5MP WDR Starlight Varifocal IP67 network bullet camera, the unit is based on a 1/ 2.7” sensor with a 2.7 to 13.5mm auto-focus motorized zoom lens giving a horizontal angle of view from 93.28° to 28.56°. Review: A versatile solidly built external bullet camera with a wide range of configuration settings. The security settings allow the camera to be suitably locked-down but the lack of a forced “strong” password is a concern; perhaps a future firmware update will remedy this.

Multi-tenant office gets an access control upgrade

“System protocols automatically bring up specific camera feeds for security managers to view in response to alerts, and footage can be viewed holistically along with other information” 50

Kajima Properties’ new development at 77 Coleman Street in the City of London is a multitenant office set over seven floors. BNP Paribas acts as the managing agent, while the redevelopment was designed by architect Buckley Gray Yeoman. The redevelopment included installing external facades as well as creating floors of new office space, and 16,000 sq ft of retail, leisure and restaurant space. BNP Paribas and Kajima Properties wanted a seamless and efficient access system to allow bona fide users and visitors easy access through reception and lifts to their desired location. This needed to be underpinned, but not impinged by, a robust security management system including CCTV to keep people and the building safe. They wanted to keep any waiting time in reception to an absolute minimum to avoid crowding, including good access for disabled users, and for all entry to be touchless. Tenants and reception staff would need an easy to use system for managing visitors. While an entry phone and door automation would be required for anyone arriving out-of-hours, or at the rear of the property, such as for deliveries and trades people with equipment. A key part of the brief was also for any installed equipment, such as turnstiles and lifts, to be in keeping with the look and feel of the building. Antron Security project managed the design, supply and installation of the access control and security system with Inner Range providing the core access and security management system, Integriti, enabling Antron Security to build the bespoke solutions required. Kone lift ‘destination control’ is managed by Inner Range’s Integriti access control, interfaced with IDL speed lane turnstiles, proximity cards and Forge’s Bluepoint management system. The building’s 2000+ regular users are issued secure

proximity cards, carrying encrypted information about when and where the user is allowed to go. For the turnstiles in the reception area, Antron Security and IDL worked with the vision set out by the architect to create a system that was in keeping with the design of the building. A bespoke set up of slim ‘speed lane’ turnstile pedestals, together with a separate glass gate were fitted in the reception area where space is limited, but security provisions and good disabled access are needed. IDL’s Glassgate 200 opens away from the user, and closes behind, preventing tailgaters. Readers for proximity cards and QR codes were set into the speed lanes to create a seamless flow through the reception area. Inner Range’s Integriti also allowed Forge’s Bluepoint visitor management system to integrate with IDL’s turnstiles and the Kone lifts. A BTP XIP intercom system which uses an ethernet distribution network was installed to allow visitors out-of-hours to contact the security team, or for deliveries and trades people to use in order to access doors at the rear of the building. CCTV cameras from Hikvision’s ‘superior’ range have been installed throughout the site to create a hard-wired IP surveillance system. They are integrated with the Integriti access control system, which allows for ‘cause and effect’ monitoring. System protocols automatically bring up specific camera feeds for security managers to view in response to alerts, and footage can be viewed holistically along with other information on from Integriti, such as if a door has been left open. Jamie Crane, Commercial Director at Antron Security, said: “The flexibility of Inner Range’s Integriti access control system and Forge’s Bluepoint visitor management allowed us to incorporate high-level lift integration (known as ‘destination control’). Together, they create a future-proof solution as we can continue to meet the ever-changing requirements of the landlord and tenants via our ability to integrate with third party systems and devices such as lifts, intercoms, lighting and building management devices.”

Airlock access system for Border Caravan Storage Border Caravan Storage in Deeping St James offers storage for 170 caravans, motor homes and trailers. The site near Peterborough used an access control system to control access to the site, but there wasn’t an ideal method of tracking which units were on site at any given time. The management team had been using a manually operated display board that was prone to error, so they decided to look for a reliable automatic method of identifying which units were on site. The Border management team spoke to Paul Evans of BTT Comms who suggested using an airlock system, where vehicles have to pass through two separate electronically controlled gates to enter or exit the site. The existing drivers’ access control fobs are used alongside uPASS tags, which are placed in the side window of the caravans for detection by the uPASS long-range reader. If a caravan passes through the first gate, the second gate will only open if the uPASS tag and the driver’s fob are both detected and provide a valid match. The information is also relayed to a specially designed asset management system that keeps a real-time log of all units on and off the site.

This system from Nortech has been recognised by CaSSOA, the Caravan Storage Owners’ Association, whose endorsement is recognised by insurance companies, thereby reducing insurance costs for the caravan owners. “We are very pleased with the new system which provides information in real time and we now know which caravans and owners are on site at any time giving us total peace of mind” said Helen Rogers of Border Caravan Storage.

External PIRs protect in rural environments Properties in the Home Counties and Lincolnshire are using a combination of Optex’s PIR sensors to protect property, people, and other important assets including horses from the dangers of vandalism and theft. The sensors offer panoramic 180-degree detection coverage and 12m/40ft radius to detect any intrusion around a residential or commercial building. They are therefore suited for protecting residential grounds and flat roofs typical with outbuilding on farms and stables. Harper Security Systems recently installed the sensors at a private stables in Lincolnshire to protect horses and valuable equestrian equipment. Ben Linklater, Sales Director at Optex Europe, says that while the focus is often on towns and cities, crime in the countryside is a huge issue, costing the rural community in the UK more than £9 million this year alone: “Reliable external protection is becoming increasingly important not only to secure equipment and assets, but also livestock and other animals like horses. The earlier the detection the better chance there is to prevent intruders. “External intrusion detection is essential in rural environments as most assets, many of which are expensive to replace (and some are irreplaceable), are stored outside. We are very pleased to work with Harper Security who understand the benefits of early detection to keep premises, assets, people and animals secure.”

New solution brings convenient employee experiences

“Using a mobile phone is much more convenient than access cards. People forget their access cards, but their mobile phone is with them all the time”

52

Founded in 2010, Avolon is the third largest aircraft leasing company in the world with 824 aircraft and 145 customers in 62 countries. Its new global headquarters in Dublin is comprised of 6,967 sq m (75,000 sq ft) of secure office space across six floors that houses its IT, catering, legal and communications departments. Avolon’s new premises in the Ballsbridge area of Dublin provided an opportunity for the company to rethink its approach to building security. Avolon was looking for a solution that could be personalised to individuals, easily accessed and managed remotely. Additional requirements included: the need to provide different levels of security clearance in different areas of the building, the ability to manage individual security clearances, the facilitation of access outside of the usual work day, and secure parking lot access for employees and visitors. Avolon also wanted a solution that could be deployed worldwide to provide a consistent experience for its employees, regardless of their location. Avolon partnered with systems integrator Summit Security Systems and deployed HID Mobile Access at its HQ. Powered by Seos technology, the solution uses Bluetooth Low

Energy (BLE) and iCLASS readers to create a secure and flexible access control solution for its headquarters. The building’s security system enables credentials on smartphones via an app rather than on physical access cards and uses iCLASS SE mobile-enabled readers installed at points of access Avolon has implemented a range of different solutions for different parts of its premises that can vary by time of day. For example, elevators utilise access control measures to ease the flow of people within the building during work hours, while assuring that after-hours access is more controlled. The ease-of-use and security also extends to the parking lot, which benefits from HID’s “Twist and Go” feature. Employees twist their iOS or Android phone when they approach the parking readers to gain entry. Avolon encourages its employees to cycle to work and has extended mobile access to a secure employee bike parking area that links directly into shower and changing facilities. The new solution provides a number of advantages over the previous card-based system including after-hours access (vital to a 24/7 business like Avolon), ready access to secure rooms and easy management of security clearances. “Using a mobile phone is much more convenient than access cards. People forget their access cards, but their mobile phone is with them all the time,” said Allan Dawson, facilities project manager at Avolon. “It’s much more efficient. For example, we now have much lower instances of people leaving the perimeter and having to ask for re-entry because they’ve left their pass in the office.” In the future, Avolon anticipates expanding its new physical access solution across its global campuses. “As well as deploying in our Dublin head office we have also deployed in our New York, Florida and Hong Kong offices,” said Allan Dawson. “The benefit of using a global platform means our people can travel between offices with their security status intact and ready to go for each location.”
