PSTN questions

Openreach’s programme to migrate all UK phone lines and channels to All-IP by December 2025 was the subject of a PSI webinar this month, and it raised a few interesting questions from attendees

For the security sector, the move to All-IP affects not only voice calls, in other words the standard home and office telephones, but also lines of communication such as the link between alarm systems and ARCs. It is estimated that over one million alarm systems in the UK still use the analogue network for alarm reporting and communications and in most cases, in order for the panel to continue to be connected after switchover an installer will need to fit a device to the unit which, given the huge number of jobs this represents is not necessarily going to be a simple and cost-effective procedure, yet it is one that needs addressing.

There are a number of options available to the installer to maintain the connection, however the news that BT Redcare is ceasing to operate in August 2025, just a few months before the All-IP deadline, has thrown a rather large spanner into the works as they were one of the companies offering devices to help with the move.

So the switch to all-IP is currently a concern in the industry and alarm installers face a challenge to get customers ready and transitioned away from systems that rely on the copper PSTN lines to dial out to ARCs. The PSI webinar addressed the key issues: what you need to do, when you should do it and what happens if you don’t, via the expertise of Simon Reeve of Pyronix and John Livermore of Openreach.

During the session we had many questions covering a range of topics including who was liable to pay for the upgrade (with concerns for those now being asked to have a router installed), the robustness of the connection in rural areas and the potential problems caused by corporate firewalls. Simon and John both handled the concerns admirably (I was really only there as eye candy) and explained how installers do have help available should it be required.

If you are working in an area that is yet to experience the switchover and you missed the webinar, it is available on demand via the QR code here. Hopefully it will help address any issues you have with the changes and put your mind at ease.

Keep an eye out for more PSI webinars in the future and if you have any ideas of subjects that you think we need to address going forward, be sure to drop me a line and we’ll see what we can do.

FESS training facility investment in Gateshead

Due to the demand for fire, emergency and security systems apprenticeships and a need to keep pace with advancing technology in the industry, Access Training has invested a fivefigure sum in a brand-new training facility in Gateshead.

Access Training, based at Gateshead Skills Academy on Team Valley, has leased an additional property five minutes walk from its main site, to increase its capacity to deliver practical and theoretical training on the design and installation of fire, security and emergency systems (FESS).

The new FESS training centre has been kitted-out with technology including wireless, as well as some of the most widely installed older systems – to give apprentices across the north east a range of skills.

The facility, which was officially opened by the Mayor of Gateshead – Councillor Eileen McMaster – will have the capacity to train 100 apprentices a year on the design, commissioning, installation, fault-finding and repairs of security and fire systems. Access has also appointed two new experienced FESS engineers as trainers to deliver the apprenticeships to increase the capacity of the existing team.

Managing director at Access Training, David Armstrong, said: “We have listened to what FESS employers want and acted on it and we’re looking forward to supplying hundreds of highly-trained, competent engineers to the FESS sector thanks to the new training centre.”

• PureTech Security is the latest company to announce Skills for Security sponsorship. The partnership sees PureTech’s Viper and Cortex Video Surveillance solutions being embedded into the SfS fire & security curriculum, with SfS also supporting at PureTech’s own Expo events later this year.

First installer recognised by the FESS (Security Systems) EWA

A security system installer in South Wales is the first to be recognised by the FESS (Security Systems) Experienced Worker Assessment.

Developed by BPEC, the Experienced Worker Assessment (EWA) provides a route for experienced professionals to demonstrate they meet the same standard as the Fire, Emergency & Security Systems industry apprenticeship in England and, importantly, gain Electrotechnical Certification Scheme FESS Technician status. Pathways are available in both fire and security

systems to allow individuals to follow an assessment process tailored to their line of work.

Dennis Roe, who owns Complete Security Solutions and has worked in the industry for 28 years, attended Banham Academy’s Assessment Centre in Derby, undertook a practical assessment of his skills across service and repair, installation, testing and commissioning. A professional discussion and knowledge assessment was also carried out as part of the process.

Speaking of his assessment, Dennis said: “The assessments were challenging and thorough, allowing me to demonstrate my experience and industry expertise. The completion of this assessment allowed me to obtain my ECS FESS Technician Gold Card, I know this will be something regulators will be checking in the very near future.”

“The first completion of the FESS EWA fire pathway and this award win are both important milestones for BPEC,” said Neil Collishaw, BPEC CEO. “BPEC developed the EWA program to meet the Hackett report’s key recommendations and set a benchmark in knowledge, expertise, and competence in the FESS arena. Our aim was simple but significant: bridging the competency evidence gap between seasoned professionals and newly qualified FESS Technicians.”

BSIA signs exclusive partnership with TSE organisers

The British Security Industry Association (BSIA) has signed an exclusive partnership agreement with the Nineteen Group and will be participating in their security related events during 2024. The first step in this collaboration will be participation in The Security Event.

Tristan Norman, Group Director, Nineteen Group, said: “This collaboration marks an exciting milestone, enhancing the value proposition for both our series of events and BSIA members alike.”

May ex enhances its Central Distribution Centre

Mayflex has enhanced its Central Distribution Centre (CDC) at the Birmingham HQ, with the addition of Autostore from Swisslog.

Sam Baldwin, Mayflex Operations & Services Director commented: “Technology in distribution has significantly moved on

and with our investment in Autostore and the introduction of the 14 Maybot robots, we can enhance our service levels further. For instance, our accuracy rate is already at 99.93% but our aim is to achieve 99.96%, that doesn’t sound much but over a year that equates to a large number. To ensure maximum quality, the system is designed to only deliver the product required followed by every item being scanned by our Cognex scanners. The whole process will be far quicker to process orders, which will be particularly useful for customers ordering at the trade counter or for same day despatch requirements.”

“Another great feature to benefit our customers will be the consolidation of their orders so they won’t receive so many consignments from us moving forward.”

Consumer survey reveals burglary concerns

Research commissioned by ERA, in partnership with Neighbourhood Watch, found that internet-connected security solutions are gaining popularity with homeowners.

The study, which garnered more than 18,000 responses, found that 39% of Neighbourhood Watch members are using external security cameras and 30% have video doorbells to serve as visible deterrents against anti-social behaviour, criminal damage and burglaries.

This follows news from the Neighbourhood Watch’s Crime and Community survey which found that 64% of UK residents are worried about their homes being broken into and that over half of respondents believe that crime has increased in their local area.

With a burglary taking place in the UK approximately every 106 seconds, it ranks within the top five of the country’s most common crimes, which is why prevention remains a key focus for Neighbourhood Watch.

John Hayward-Cripps, CEO of Neighbourhood Watch, says: “The results from the National Crime and Community Survey show that burglary remains a key concern for people in the UK. It is interesting to see that homeowners are now also looking at smart home security solutions to support them in protecting their properties and we expect interest in this area to grow, as homeowners become more accustomed to using smart home technology and familiar with its many benefits.”

Sumier Foster-Shah, Product and Customer Support Manager at ERA, commented: “With continued concern about local crime, it’s timely for window and door manufacturers to share security advice with customers and recommend certified, smart solutions, given the increase in the popularity of smart technology.”

CIE Group announces agreement with Volo CIE Group has announced a strategic partnership with VOLO. Through the agreement, CIE Group will become an authorised distributor of VOLO’s access control platform, offering a solution for businesses and organisations seeking to enhance security, streamline access management, and gain valuable insights into their physical spaces.

Camera utilises AI to improve fire detection accuracy

The Aviotec 8000i IR camera utilises AI algorithms for greater reliability and accuracy in distinguishing real fire situations from false alarms. The alarm, based on an actual fire, or trouble signals, can be transmitted to a local network, or by two relays, also to the central fire panel. Trouble signals could for example result from a tilted camera, a blocked lens or a power failure. The new camera further increases fire safety by providing fire protection 24/7 thanks to its integrated infrared (IR) illuminator. bosch-presse.de

What’s in the box?

Camera

Adapter box and grommet cover

RJ45 feed-through cover

Basic instructions/contact information

The PoE+ powered, i-PRO WV-X15700-V2L is a mid-sized bullet style camera with a 1/1.8” 4K sensor and incorporating AI edge analytics. It has IP67 ingress protection and is IK10 impact rated. The X series extends the life of older installations by adding AI capabilities to existing, non-AI, surveillance cameras, including cameras from other manufacturers.

Getting started

The camera has a 13 x 13 cm mounting plate that mates with its supplied wall / ceiling adapter box. A transparent plastic grommet cover is provided that fits over the camera’s mounting plate to hold the grommets and environmentally seal the camera’s connections.

PoE+ power and network connectivity are provided via a short RJ45 flying lead from the rear of the camera. 12v DC supply is possible but requires an optional connection lead WVQCA501A (not supplied). This connection lead mates with a 12-way multi-way socket on the cameras baseplate that also supports audio and alarm in / outputs.

PoE power demand is stated as approximately 14.0W and in operation gave readings around 13.5W to 14.1W including with IR illumination on.

The mounting bracket has adjustments for pan, tilt, and yaw to suit the mounting surface.

Once powered, the camera is by default DHCP configured to the local network or can be set up using the i-PRO configuration tool available from their website

The camera’s body shell can be removed by loosening a single crosshead retaining screw and then rotating and sliding off the cover. This then gives access to the micro-SD card socket, three switches for SD On/Off, Tele, and Wide lens angle. Adjacent to these is an Initial Set button to restore defaults, with a pair of small LEDs above to indicate Link, and Network Activity. Finally, an RCA (phono) socket is available for monitor output, which for this model is set to PAL format. The storage card socket can accept microSDXC cards up to 512GB along with microSDHC or microSD cards at their lower maximum capacity limits.

Operation

Once powered, the camera is by default DHCP configured to the local network or can be set up using the i-PRO configuration tool available from their website. When first accessed via a web browser, the user is presented with an Administrator registration screen to set the initial admin password. The username can be from 1 to 32 characters, but the password must be between 8 and 32 characters and use at least three character types. Once set, you are prompted to log in with your new password.

A basic setup mode is then entered requiring language and date & time settings and once entered the live view screen is shown. Depending on display type, this will likely show stream two at 1920 x 1080 in H.265 at a reduced frame rate. Changing to H.264 increases the browser view update rate.

Icons at the top right of the display are for Snapshot, Live View, Image Comparison, Support Website, Full Screen, and Grid Display followed by Camera Control and Setup. The Live View icon gives a drop down set of options for Stream selection (1 to 4) along with JPEG and Multi-screen options. The Image Comparison allows before and after changes to be viewed prior to confirming and storing. The Grid display is to assist with setting viewing angles and perspective for some software applications.

The Gear icon for Setup brings up the basic menu options at the lower part of the window and reduces the live image area.

Menu Options

The menu system is unconventional as it appears at the bottom of the screen below the image rather than to the left, however this can be changed during the initial basic setup or using the Detailed Setting \ Screen Setting selection. The main menu options are:

Basic – Camera title, Image rotation, On-screen display settings

Stream – Capture mode and stream configurations

Image Quality – Brightness, Sharpness, Gain, Noise reduction, Super Dynamic, Day/Night settings

Zoom – Zoom and Focus adjustments and auto settings

Audio – Mic / Line selection and associated settings

Alarm – Terminal input, VMD, Scene change, Audio detection, and deactivation time

Detailed setting – Extension software, Network, Maintenance, Camera detailed settings, and Screen setting

The Detailed setting icons change the main window to a more conventional left hand menu tree display with all variables in the main window to the right apart from the Screen setting option that allows the screen to be changed to a dark background and the basic options to be shown at the bottom, left or right of the screen.

Once you enter the detailed settings menu structure, a wide range of additional configuration and network security settings become available.

Performance

The camera gives true colour rendition and has good sensitivity for such a high-resolution

The X series extends the life of older installations by adding AI capabilities to the existing, non-AI, surveillance cameras, including cameras from other manufacturers

sensor. The specification gives figures of 0.06 lux colour and 0.03 lux Monochrome at 50IRE, F1.5 and 1/30th second.

The camera has a 2x optical zoom capability with an additional 6x digital. This gives a wide-angle view of 53° (H) x 30° (V) and an optical telephoto view of 104° (H) x 56° (V). If at maximum 3840 x 2160-pixel resolution, the image resolution reduces to a still useable 640 x 360 if the full digital zoom is used.

A Super Dynamic setting provides up to 132dB range for high contrast scenes or Backlight compensation or Highlight suppression are available.

Along with conventional VMD and Scene change detection, the camera includes a range of AI enhanced analytics features including Privacy Guard (real-time face or human obscuring by stream), Face, People, Vehicle, Occupancy, and Scene change detection, then on-site learning. Some of these options require the use of additional i-PRO management software and Face recognition may require additional registration.

Two high intensity infrared LEDs mounted beneath the camera provide balanced illumination for night time images. Range is stated as up to 50 metres at 50IRE.

Using the detailed image quality menu option, fine image adjustments, zoom and focus can be set, up to 8 privacy zones can be added with selection as four points of a screen area, also Lens distortion can be compensated for.

AI sound detection classifications include Gunshot, Yell, Vehicle horn, and Glass break.

Conclusion

A very comprehensive range of configuration options and advanced detection capabilities support this ONVIF and NDAA compliant camera.

The PSTI Act and the installer

Have you heard about the Product Security and Telecommunications Infrastructure Act that will soon come into force? Are you aware of how it affects the electronic security sector and what you do?

To find out more about PSTI and its potential impact for installers we caught up with Adrian Mealing the Chairman of the Security Equipment Manufacturers Section (SEMS) at the British Security Industry Association (BSIA) and a Director of the BSIA where he provides an overview of the new PSTI legalisation, its requirements, and its implications, particularly for our industry’s professionals.

Understanding the implications

The Product Security and Telecommunications Infrastructure (PSTI) Act of 2022 represents a significant milestone in the evolution of cybersecurity standards for consumer connectable products in the UK.

The evolution of the Act

The PSTI Act, which became law in December 2022 and comes into force on April 29, 2024, underlines the UK’s commitment to safeguarding consumers in the digital age.

It mandates compliance with minimum security requirements as defined in the draft Product Security and Telecommunications Infrastructure (Security Requirements for Relevant Connectable Products) Regulations 2023.

The cybersecurity standard

Who is responsible?

The PSTI Act targets manufacturers, importers, and distributors, compelling them to ensure their products meet the Act’s stipulated security requirements. This impacts a broad array of internet and network connectable products, ranging from smart home assistants to intruder alarm systems such as IP communicators and control panels.

It is critical for industry professionals to note that the Act is not exhaustive in specifying which products fall within its remit, hence the BSIA’s ongoing efforts to seek clarifications from the Department for Science, Innovation & Technology (DST&I).

What does it cover?

The PSTI Act is extensive and covers many areas of cyber security, however these are broken down into the following areas:

• Passwords: The Act emphasizes the importance of secure passwords, necessitating them to be either unique per product or user defined.

• Security Issues Reporting: It requires manufacturers to establish contact points for reporting security issues, including providing acknowledgments and status updates throughout the resolution process.

• Security Update Periods: The legislation insists on clear communication regarding the minimum security update periods, necessitating transparency about the duration of support for the product and the conditions under which these periods might be extended.

Stakeholder responsibilities

Manufacturers, importers, and distributors are tasked with three key responsibilities:

1. Scope Determination: They must ascertain whether their products are in the scope of the PSTI Act.

Installers must stay informed about the products that comply with the new standards to ensure they are installing equipment that meets legal requirements

ETSI EN 303 645, first published in 2019 and currently updated as of June 2020, is the cornerstone of the Act’s compliance framework. This standard comprises both mandatory and recommended requirements aimed at enhancing cybersecurity and data protection across various products.

The standard’s robustness is acknowledged internationally and serves as the foundation for BSI Kitemark schemes related to IoT and smart devices. With a test methodology laid out in ETSI TS 103 701, manufacturers can ensure that their products meet these essential criteria.

2. Technical Compliance: They must ensure that products comply with the technical requirements stipulated by the Act and the ETSI EN 303 645 standard.

3. Compliance Documentation: They must prepare a statement of compliance that includes detailed information as specified by the Act. (Manufacturers & Importers)

Implications for alarm products

Based on our current understanding, products such as IP communicators and control panels within the intruder alarm sector are likely to

BSIA

be affected by the PSTI Act. This means that manufacturers of these products must carefully review and possibly revise their security measures to ensure adherence to the Act.

Compliance through CySpag

The BSIA’s Cyber Security Product Assurance Group (CySpag) sets forth guidelines that align with the PSTI Act’s requirements. Manufacturers who meet these guidelines can confidently comply with the Act. This also offers a pathway for our members to demonstrate their commitment to cybersecurity and the protection of end-users.

The role of installers

It’s important to note that while the legislation is unlikely to affect installers of security equipment directly, unless they import or distribute the products, the implications of the PSTI Act on the overall market could influence their operations indirectly. For instance, installers must stay informed about the products that comply with the new standards to ensure they are installing equipment that meets legal requirements.

Moving forward

The PSTI Act signals a significant shift for the security equipment industry, compelling us to enhance our cybersecurity standards collectively 30

As we anticipate the full enforcement of the PSTI Act, the BSIA continues to lobby for clarity from the DST&I on behalf of our members. The Act’s intent is commendable, but its success hinges on transparent and actionable guidance that allows our industry to prepare, adapt, and ultimately thrive in a more secure digital environment.

In conclusion, the PSTI Act signals a significant shift for the security equipment industry, compelling us to enhance our cybersecurity standards collectively. As industry professionals, we are obliged to act responsibly, ensuring that our products safeguard not only physical premises but also the digital data of the consumers we serve. Our proactive approach to the Act’s requirements is more than a legal duty; it’s a reflection of our dedication to quality and trust in a world that is ever more interconnected.

What would be a typical project for you?

A typical project for Kings Secure Technologies (KST) businesses would normally consist of several systems integrated in to one strategic solution. As we have specialist divisions within the KST group of companies, we can deliver either a single service line such as fire, or several from the full security, fire and life safety mix.

No two projects are the same, and KST is typically involved from the start; from design, project management, through to installation, commissioning and maintenance. We work with everyone from high net worth individuals to government departments. From small contactless access control projects to a 3200+ camera installation; the 2nd largest IP intelligent CCTV installation of its kind for a single building in the world!

Do you have any ‘go to’ technology and manufacturers?

KST is a Value Added Reseller for all our key technology manufacturers. We find VAR status brings substantial benefits, such as having expert first-instance training for our engineers.

As part of our VAR approval, KST’s Head of Technical Services, Lee Kerry, will put partners on capability matrixes, ensuring that we only use the very best and carefully selected products for our clients.

We are dedicated to actively pursuing strategic partnerships that complement our current capabilities and enhance our range of services. These collaborations empower us to leverage emerging technologies, access

together raising standards

success, it is always important to stay ahead of the curve. For many organisations, the services we provide are critical to their business – I love the fact that the work we do is keeping people and assets safe!

Is NSI certification important to your business?

Yes! NSI certification shows our clients that we are serious players in the security, fire & life safety sector. NSI Gold and BAFE accreditations, for example, are confirmation of the high standards that we work to. They also mean that our in-house processes and procedures, put in place by our Compliance Team, are properly audited by a third party – again ensuring our systems and services remain at the highest standards. We are strong supporters of certification across the industry and, from a personal level, I think the industry needs to drive certification of the self-employed and small sub contract sector where standards at times are still low.

Do you think there is an engineer skills shortage? Any trouble recruiting?

Undoubtedly and it is one of our biggest challenges. Over the years we have seen our sector become more agile; the need for sub

contract labour, both direct and via agencies, has become increasingly important. The potential for poor quality workmanship becomes very real, with rising admin costs for employers to manage and audit these engineers. Not to mention the risks associated with failing to achieve SLAs (one of my biggest frustrations).

Establishing good practice, setting common standards and improving efficiency and performance is something we all want to do. We need to get the ‘poor quality’ and, at times, dishonest individuals out of the industry. People move around the industry – that’s great for flexible demand – but it allows for the poorskilled to go unnoticed and continue to operate. We’ve been burnt and had to spend money redoing works; as I’m sure others have.

We need to be giving engineers a clear development path and, equally, need a more flexible approach to apprenticeships. The current industry apprenticeships scheme, whilst attempting to solve the problem, is not fit for purpose and needs to be more flexible. There are challenges around the government levy approach; there needs to be more focus around specific training.

36 www.psimagazine.co.uk

Are there any common requests from customers that give you problems?

Most of our customers operate in challenging environments so it is no wonder that these challenges, such as tight time scales, are transferred to our team. Thankfully, we have a fantastic Project Team here at KST who work with our clients, mobilising contracts to suit their timescales and specific challenges.

What is the security industry’s biggest myth?

I believe that the biggest myth is that Fire & Security Engineers can be truly multidisciplined. Particularly on more complex sites, security and fire systems need specialist skills - one size really does not fit all. Technology is moving so quickly and good alarm engineers don’t automatically become good high-end CCTV and Access Control Engineers. New technologies equal more training - which can be time consuming and result in engineers being off the road.

The world of fire on complex sites is again a different skill set.

What impact has smart/home automation had on your business?

Recent years have seen a rapid increase in the use of home automation which I believe will become even more prevalent in the home intruder market. As technology in the smart home market advances, the gap between the domestic and professional security markets grows smaller.

Whilst KST does not focus on the domestic market, we did identify a smart home security opportunity some years ago which led us to form a partnership with US smart home security disruptor, Abode. Tech in the home security market moves at such a pace; there will continue to be more opportunity for

interoperability, and home automation will continue to grow and eventually become a norm.

I fully support the move for selected monitored smart home security systems to get the same level of accreditations to allow police response where required.

What would make your job easier?

A more stable economic climate; the last few years have been challenging for all businesses. At the moment, due to economic uncertainty, many potential clients are holding off making decisions; there appears to be a falling appetite to initiate new capital investment projects. We’re seeing clients taking steps to extend the life of their existing systems, rather than replace. Availability of labour is also a key issue, as is the industry skills shortage.

What advice would you give to a younger version of yourself?

Be more patient at times and recognise that often good things do come to those who wait. Never be afraid to be a disruptor; challenge the status quo, push boundaries to achieve great results and think outside the box to find new ways of doing things. Never accept the “But we’ve always done it like this” way of working. Will England ever win the football World Cup again?

As an avid follower of the oval ball, my passion for football is very limited. I think both the England rugby and football teams face similar dilemmas. That said, as a proud Scotland supporter I am hoping that both nations will see glory, eventually!

If you won £25,000 what would you do with it? I’d take a well-earned family holiday to Australia and New Zealand. Maybe I could tie this in with a Lions Rugby tour with some friends and a few glasses of nice wine!

How can installers ensure what they specify is fit-for-purpose? Is there such thing as a one-size-fits-all in security? The PSI Panel is in session...

Sam Cherri –G-TEC

As most brands now offer a lot of features as standard and, other than the type of housing and lens that they need for a particular job or location, it’s more down to the knowledge of the installer of being able to use the product in the best way to meet the requirements. While most products now have some standard AI features built-in, installers in every day jobs mostly still just fit the system with just enough settings to be able to get the jobs done - unless the end end user asks for special features. This may be because they either don’t know that it has it, or they don’t know how to set it up, or both. Another aspect is if the end user doesn’t ask for it even if they know they can enable more features, they don’t in case of troubleshooting issues in the future.

What would help the installer to choose the right product is for more courses to be offered by the brands they use to make sure they are confident in applying the extra features, therefore they will increase their business and get them an advantage over the other installers who just offer standard installations even if the product can do more.

James Smith –Reliance High-Tech

A security solution needs to be as unique as the organisation that it is designed to protect. Specifying fit-for-purpose technology should be based on a thorough understanding of the risks and threats faced by an organisation. Put simply, there is no such thing as one-size fits all security.

A security technology integrator that acts in a consultative capacity will be able to offer expert advice, draw on diverse experience, pre-empt potential issues and ensure that equipment is fully optimised, energy efficient, reliable and secure. There are end-to-end solutions that work well for specific needs, as well as open

protocol solutions that are good for others. However, knowing the pros and cons of each can be the difference between a successful security technology implementation and a waste of time and money.

As the worlds of security and IT combine, integrators that have a strong interest in cutting-edge technology and the ability to help customers navigate and gain incremental value through the fast-changing IT based security landscape, are in demand. Those that have specified, installed and maintained the latest cloud, edge, internet of things (IoT) and artificial intelligence (AI) based technologies are able to offer maximise return on investment and ensure the highest levels of future proofing.

This last point is particularly important, as working with an IT proficient security integrator will ensure that deploying more flexible solutions in the future can be done more quickly, with minimal disruption. Furthermore, although cloud-based security solutions can reduce energy consumption, facilitate connected thinking between devices and increase the potential power of analytics, knowledge about what different brands offer is, once again, vital. What might look like a great deal on the surface can come with many issues ranging from cybersecurity and support to overall lifecycle and functionality.

A specialist integrator that delivers value beyond security and takes a total cost of ownership approach, factoring in not just initial capital expenditure but also operational expenditure, product quality and maintenance provision, as well as other important factors such as sustainability, will provide the best outcome. Not every integrator can do this, so my advice is to remember the phrase caveat emptor – ‘let the buyer beware’.

Dave Tate –Ajax Systems

While the abundance of options in the security market can be overwhelming, there are key factors installers should consider to ensure they specify systems that are fit-for-purpose.

“While there may not be a one-size-fits-all solution in security, there are certainly versatile systems that

First and foremost, it’s essential to assess the unique requirements of the environment in which the security system will be deployed. Factors such as the size of the area to be covered, the level of risk, and the desired features all play a crucial role in determining the most suitable solution.

Moreover, installers must thoroughly understand the operational requirements of the end-users. By gaining insights into client’s workflows, schedules, and security priorities, professionals can tailor solutions that seamlessly integrate into existing operations and enhance overall efficiency.

Installers should also prioritise reliability and quality when selecting security products. Investing in trusted brands known for their performance and durability can provide peace of mind and ensure long-term effectiveness. Understanding total lifetime cost is an important consideration.

While there may not be a one-size-fits-all solution in security, there are certainly versatile systems that can be customised to meet various needs. Modular and scalable solutions allow for flexibility and adaptation as requirements evolve over time.

In addition, staying informed about the latest advancements and trends in security technology is key to making informed decisions. Installers should take advantage of training programs, industry events, and resources to stay up-todate with the rapidly evolving landscape of security solutions.

Jamie Barnfield – IDIS Europe

Ric Martin –Pinnacle Systems

I firmly believe that there is no such thing as a one-sizefits-all solution in security. We would go as far as to say that this notion is impossible if security specification is done properly.

Installers are instrumental in ensuring that security technology meets the unique needs of each client.

Through thorough assessments of the client’s requirements, including factors such as the environment, personnel involved, risk level, and desired outcomes, installers are the main party to deliver a tailored solution that is truly fit for purpose to the individual property in question.

Every organisation has its own independent set of security concerns, operational requirements, and budget constraints. It’s essential to approach product selection with a nuanced understanding of these factors.

By collaborating closely with clients at an early design stage, and leveraging our expertise, installers can select products that align closely with the client’s specific needs and objectives, integrating where possible to create a bespoke solution. This presents designers with complete control over hardware choices within their security ecosystems.

And it is as important in utilising existing systems as it is in introducing new solutions,

One size fits all? Yes and no. Often customers and systems integrators are confused by multiple ranges of cameras and kit designed by manufacturers to meet the requirements of almost any application, while being tailor made for none.

Installers can refine the solutions they offer by understanding customers’ specific challenges, and by working with manufacturers who are willing to support them.

Gaining expertise in a particular sector can pay dividends. For example, in retail we’re finding that variations on our latest end-to-end solution can be adapted to meet the needs of many different kinds of outlet. This is proving to be a powerful configuration: a single fisheye camera, with a 4-ch NVR and a plug-in AI box that provides enhanced security and safety, plus essential instore and customer intelligence analytics. Slightly bigger stores might need a couple of extra domes to cover checkout areas.

It’s a win-win - for installers every system is easy to design, install, and maintain, while end users have certainty on price and project roll-out time.

The same is true in logistics where fisheyes can provide complete oversight across warehouses while a single fisheye, using text-in functionality, will cover up to four loading bays, tracking goods. Detecting potential accident risks with forklifts, special onboard micro domes and NVRs can alert both drivers and supervisors.

Choosing the right VMS needs attention: to understand how each person across an organisation will access and use the system; if customers want a centralised view and multi-task surveillance capabilities that require a federated architecture; or modules that will give them failover and redundancy; or simple low cost or cost-free site-by-site client software. It’s also important for installers not to lead customers down a technology dead-end and to understand future plans, such as options to add AI or integrate third-party systems or devices.

Jaroslav Barton – HID

There’s one primary thing that installers should be alert to – choose products from trusted suppliers that are interoperable. From an access control perspective, this allows diverse credential, reader and controller solutions to be connected together based on a customer’s specific requirement and use case.

Look for devices which support the OSDP communications protocol. This became an international standard in May 2020 when it was approved by the International Electrotechnical Commission. Equipment is guaranteed to work together securely, there’s no vendor lock in and – crucially – there’s future proof upgradeability.

This is key to offer value to the end user customer. So, for example, installers should specify multi-tech readers for customers using legacy cards– like 125 kHz proximity or MIFARE Classic– to be ready for seamless upgrade to the latest smart card technologies, along with mobile access, too.

Smart phones are all pervasive in our lives and touchless, digital entry is becoming the norm in corporate real estate settings, especially when integrated with smart building software. Staff and visitors then have a tool in their pocket to get into buildings and use all the facilities – quickly, seamlessly and securely.

Even if a customer is standardising on traditional RFID plastic access cards – and isn’t adopting mobile access yet - readers fitted now should have BLE capability so there’s a sensible upgrade path available for them. Unless there is a specific reason not to, most organisations will shift to mobile access in time.

Back to the point about interoperability, at a door controller level, there are platforms which are open – these should be chosen – because they clearly allow a variety of access control solutions to be used.

whether for visual verification and, or ongoing maintenance and monitoring, which can all be factored into creating a remote solution where incidents can be responded to quickly and efficiently.

Installers can work with open-platform systems that accommodate existing security infrastructure while introducing new solutions on a scalable basis. This approach allows for seamless integration and future expansion as security needs evolve or budgets allow.

Choosing high-quality products and having the flexibility of manufacturer, backed by industry expertise ensures long-term effectiveness and value for clients.

Success in security technology implementation relies on collaboration, expertise, and a commitment to delivering solutions that truly meet the needs of the client. With the right approach to product selection and a focus on customisation, installers can effectively address the diverse security challenges faced by their clients.

Mike Isherwood –System Q

End users tend to fall into one of the following three categories; Basic features and low price, Good price / feature mix, or Advanced features at a premium price. This will dictate the type of products and services that installers pitch to their customers and demonstrates why a one-size-fits-all

www.psimagazine.co.uk

solution cannot really exist. In fact, installers will often voice frustration with end users that have ‘Champagne Taste and Lemonade Money’, which means their budget cannot match their product expectations. That said, the most expensive part of a security solution is often the labour. This is where installers must look closely at products which can reduce their installation time, such as the IP Mule, which allows someone to replace an analog CCTV system with IP. It uses the existing coax cabling and significantly reduces the time it takes to install, which means an installer charges less without sacrificing profits, which means you can win more jobs. The easiest way to specify the right equipment is to first understand which category the customer fits, then find supplier solutions that match those categories and look for suppliers with innovative ways to speed up your installation time.

Justin Hawkesford & David Hughes –Comelit-PAC

In the realm of security technology, installers face a myriad of options, making it crucial to ensure that what they specify is exactly fit for purpose.

There’s no one-size-fits-all solution. Every space is unique, and what works for one environment may not work for another. That’s why we advocate for a tailored approach to product selection, working with the customer’s

specification we can consider factors such as resolution requirements, environmental conditions, and the end user’s real needs.

By engaging with customers and discerning their priorities, installers can provide solutions that align with their actual specification requirements, rather than imposing preconceived notions.

One critical consideration in today’s smart product selection is the choice between physical and virtual credentials. Both options have their pros and cons, making them suitable for different scenarios.

For instance, while mobile credentials offer convenience and environmental benefits, physical credentials may be preferred in environments where mobile devices are restricted. It’s essential to select the appropriate credential technology to ensure security and avoid vulnerabilities associated with low-frequency solutions like 125KHz.

When taking CCTV, one of the critical considerations in installation is the resolution required. While high-resolution cameras

offer more detailed images, they may not be necessary for low-risk areas where a lower resolution suffices.

Integration is another key aspect to consider. Modern security systems no longer operate in isolation but interface with various other systems, including CCTV, intruder alarms, and fire alarms. This integration enhances overall security and streamlines management, without incurring additional costs.

When deciding between cloud-based and on-premise solutions, installers should evaluate the specific needs of each customer.

While the cloud offers convenience and accessibility, it may not always be the best fit, especially for large corporate customers with existing secure network infrastructure. Smaller businesses may benefit from the cloud’s ease of use and remote accessibility.

By asking the right questions, considering factors such as credential technology, integration, and deployment options, and leveraging the capabilities of modern systems installers can ensure that the security technology they specify is truly fit-for-purpose and delivers maximum value to customers.

As technology evolves, new features such as AI-enabled metadata analysis offer enhanced capabilities for capturing specific events. While these features may come at a price, they can significantly improve the effectiveness of the security system and streamline the process of identifying relevant incidents.

Pread Um (Suk Bong) – Hanwha Vision Europe

Smart installers know that picking the right product for the job comes down to more than just cost. Only 11% of users believe it is important that video cameras are low-cost; far more (69%) want cameras manufactured by a responsible brand. This is why product selection ultimately comes down to partnering with the right manufacturer.

Of course, that manufacturer must provide installers with a wide range of products at various price points, wand these will incorporate the latest technology. Crucially, ‘fit for purpose’ demands that products are proven, supplied by a brand with full control over design and manufacture, and backed by excellent support.

And, as security and IT managers increasingly focus on cybersecurity, they expect installers to vouch for system resilience. This means working with companies that prioritise cybersecurity. These manufacturers won’t be on the US’s list of banned suppliers, the NDAA, either - four in 10 users expect similar legislation to become law in the UK.

So, if product choice is about working with the right manufacturer, does technology play any significant role? We see a growing number of installers specifying products that feature AI to deliver value beyond security. On that basis, the use of AI at the ‘edge’—located in the video camera—is a highly popular choice.

At the edge, an AI-enabled camera minimises false alarms and processes data rapidly to provide valuable insights, lowering the total cost of ownership through reduced energy use and bandwidth requirements. In addition, multi-channel AI cameras offer further efficiencies, with significantly reduced infrastructure compared with, say, installing several separate cameras.

With AI also now more affordable than ever, systems that utilise this technology are a natural choice for installers. Moreover, systems using AI at the edge can be easily scaled, helping to future-proof businesses.

On that basis, a product using AI at the edge—from a trustworthy manufacturer—is as close as it gets to ‘one size fits all’. (continued

David Williamson – Amthal Fire & Security

To ensure complete and compliant fire and security protection for UK businesses, one project to the next will not look the same. We have a responsibility and duty of care to take a bespoke approach to system design.

It’s a case of considering the requirements of each building or site, taking into account situational awareness and factors such as the nature of the premises, risk assessments, the need for compliance with the latest legislation and the scale of any works programme undertaken.

Even the building itself is not sufficient to consider. It’s important as a sector, we understand individual needs, and the traffic flow through the building for staff and guests. This is especially key in today’s rapidly evolving hybrid working environment.

When it comes to product selection, we need to prioritise reliability, performance, and scalability per project. Importantly the value of integration to enable smart technology, remote monitoring, and identified rapid response enhanced efficiency and effectiveness.

The more detail we can gain at the beginning of a works programme, the more we can ensure what is specified is exactly fit for purpose. When done properly, this will not only consider today’s requirements for the property but also take into account future requirements, in line with budget, resource and work schedules.

It can build in alarms in multiple locations or particular design aesthetics for example in hospitality settings where it’s critical security seamlessly blends with its surroundings. Product and design selection ensures getting the balance right between watertight security and a welcoming environment. Alongside the need to offer advice and support on leveraging emerging technologies such as AI, cloud computing, and IoT to enhance security effectiveness and efficiency.

The key to successful product selection lies in collaboration and communication between installers and their clients.

Installers should work closely with clients to identify their unique requirements and preferences, providing expert guidance and advice throughout the decision-making process.

By encouraging open dialogue and transparency, installers can ensure that the specified security solutions align with individual

client’s expectations and deliver smart benefits in terms of safety, security, and peace of mind. Here, there is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all solution.

Tom Smith –Traka

To ensure that specified security solutions are fit for purpose, installers must prioritise alignment with true customer needs, not only for now but also futureproof in design. This entails working with tried and tested smart products that have stood the test of time and collaborating with sector experts.

By doing so, installers can enable the products they specify to meet customer requirements, optimising security measures and efficiencies while also minimising unnecessary costs for the business on an ongoing basis.

In the security industry, there is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all approach. Each business in every sector has unique requirements and challenges, necessitating tailored security solutions. This is right from concept to completion of a security installation and further evolved for ongoing remote maintenance and monitoring.

Manufacturers must understand this and tailor their offerings accordingly. It needs to be at the core of what we do and it’s why we have tailored our team to different industry sectors as opposed to operating from a regional basis. The aim is to develop extensive knowledge of these sectors, allowing us to provide informed advice and tailor solutions that perform effectively across various types of businesses.

When it comes to product selection, we advise installers to work with a long-standing security partner who can offer comprehensive guidance throughout the business journey.

A trusted partner with a shared vision of “Great Service Delivers” can provide valuable insights into selecting the right products that meet specific security needs. This includes not only initial product selection but also ongoing support and maintenance to ensure continued effectiveness.

The key to successful product selection lies in collaboration and expertise. By working closely with customers and leveraging the knowledge of sector experts, installers can ensure that the security solutions they specify are not only viable but also optimised to deliver long-term value and peace of mind for every individual business.
