matterof fact The record for the smallest oil refinery is held by the C&H refinery at Lusk, in Wyoming, USA. Founded in 1933, it processes only 190 barrels of crude oil each day.

The world’s first large oil refinery was begun in 1856 at Ploieşti, Romania. The Rafov Refinery began production in 1857 with a daily production of over seven tonnes.

The first public gas utility company was the Gas Light and Coke Company, operating in London. It was incorporated by an Act of Parliament in 1810 and the charter was granted in 1812 by the Prince Regent George IV. The oldest continuously producing oil well is the McClintock Well No 1 in Rouseville, Venango County in Pennsylvania, United States. Originally dug in August 1861 on the Hamilton McClintock Farm, the well initially produced 175 barrels of oil daily. Today, when the well is pumped the proceeds from the oil sales are restricted to repairs, upkeep and maintenance of the historic site, which has since been turned into a museum.
