Dozen meters under the Russian city of Yekaterinburg is abandoned salt mine with indescribable, psychedelic beauty. Caves and corridors are covered with amazing patterns formed naturally with recesses of the stone layers and carnallite. For example, carnallite mineral hydrate potassium magnesium chloride

serves as a powerful agent for fertilization of plants. It can usually be found in the yellowish red color, but it comes in blue, purple or even colorless form.

From mine today only a small part is in use, leaving the abandoned hypnotic kilometers tunnels under the surface that can be reached only with government permission. That however did not stop the photographer Mikhail Mishainik and his friends in exploring the spectacular corridors in industrial city.

The group claims that spent more than 20 hours exploring the labyrinths and on numerous occasions stayed overnight. Photos taken during their journey under the earth’s surface are breathtaking.
