Eleven week final year commercial project where the brief was to develop a novel, versatile, and eco-friendly product for outdoor activities. Catered to diverse groups and families, identifying a unique market gap beyond the Scouts.

The rise in screen time and sedentary behavior is a growing concern in today’s digital age, particularly among students and professionals. Prolonged periods spent in front of screens can lead to a range of health issues, including eye strain, headaches, back pain, and poor posture, which collectively contribute to decreased overall well-being and productivity. While it is challenging to reduce screen time given the demands of modern education and work, it is crucial to address the negative impacts associated with it. Implementing solutions that mitigate these adverse effects without compromising productivity is essential for maintaining a healthy and conducive study or work environment. Addressing this issues not only helps in improving physical health but also enhances mental focus and overall performance.

To develop a versatile product that seamlessly integrates with study environments, enhancing productivity and overall well-being for users engaged in prolonged study sessions.

The Solution

An Acupressure Rocking Footrest

An acupressure rocking footrest designed for users engaged in long study sessions. It addresses common issues like fatigue, headaches, back pain, and poor posture by combining acupressure therapy and a gentle rocking motion. This footrest seamlessly integrates into any study environment, enhancing comfort, reducing stress, and boosting concentration.

The footrest design began with the idea of incorporating acupressure nodes to enhance comfort and health. To increase its versatility, I added a rocking motion feature for dynamic movement and ergonomic benefits. The design process involved initial sketches, iterative 3D models to refine the shape and functionality. The final product combines acupressure benefits with the flexibility of rocking motion, providing a unique and effective ergonomic solution. Detailed sketches, model iterations, and technical specifications illustrate the development journey of this footrest.

I’ve designed a footrest that incorporates both acupressure therapy and a rocking feature and each offers its own unique benefits. The acupressure footrest board is angled at 8-degrees ensuring optimal foot positioning for a relaxing acupressure experience. The texture of the acupressure nodes is inspired by traditional acupressure designs, ensures an effective and therapeutic experience.

Meanwhile, the rocking motion also known as active sitting, this feature promotes subtle movements that engage the muscles, resulting in better posture, improved blood circulation and reduced leg fatigue. By encouraging active sitting it also strengthens core muscles and provides support during prolonged sitting sessions.

I've meticulously crafted the footrest using pine wood to honor the traditional approach of incorporating wood in acupressure therapy. This choice ensures durability, sturdiness, and adds to the product's aesthetic appeal while maintaining sustainability. Additionally, the entire manufacturing process is carried out with precision using a CNC machine.

The "Swayy" brand identity is an embodiment of movement, rhythm, and fun, cleverly captured in its name, icon, and typography. The playful use of the double "yy" with a U-shaped design in the name adds a unique and creative flair, while the minimalist 2D representation of the product's footrest in the icon sparks curiosity and excitement.

I’ve created mockups of Swayy’s website, showcasing its sleek design, user-friendly navigation, and captivating visuals. Each slide focuses on a unique aspect of the website, emphasizing key features like effortless access to product details, smooth navigation, and engaging imagery.

As part of my final year commercial project, I collaborated with Scouts Stores to develop a novel, versatile, and eco-friendly product that facilitates practical outdoor activities for groups and families. The goal was to cater to the needs of all outdoor adventure enthusiasts, not just scouts, and identify a unique gap in the market.

This project provided an opportunity to propose innovative solutions within industry-driven frameworks and deliver a commercially viable product.

The Solution A Compression Pannier Backpack

The Airscape Compression Pannier Bag addresses a key bikepacking challenge: managing space efficiently. Its revolutionary compression system optimizes storage without compromising functionality. Designed for convenience and ergonomic use, this bag ensures a more organized and streamlined biking adventure, making it an essential tool for modern bikepackers.

Concept Sketches Final Design

The manual compression mechanism was a key feature in my design. This user-friendly, on-the-go operation allows bikepackers to effortlessly compress their clothing and soft items whenever required. By incorporating this mechanism, I aimed to enhance the adaptability of the product to various outdoor scenarios.

The Problem

Retired older adults often struggle to stay active and healthy due to a sedentary routine, poor posture, and lack of engagement in physical activities. Traditional exercise methods can be unmotivating, and existing fitness devices are often too complex. These challenges lead to decreased mobility and higher risk of chronic diseases. There is a pressing need for accessible and engaging fitness solutions tailored to older adults.

How might we encourage older adults to stay active and engaged after retirement?

Sedentary Lifestyle: Lack of physical activity in retirement leads to health issues.

Complex Fitness Devices: Intimidating and difficult for older adults to use.

Lack of Motivation: Traditional exercises may not be engaging.

Health Issues: Inactivity results in decreased mobility and chronic diseases.

Accessibility: Fitness programs and facilities can be hard to access

The Solution

Posture Detection Camera

The solution involves a compact, unobtrusive posture detection camera paired with a holographic projector that provides real-time feedback on body position. Using advanced computer vision and machine learning, the system accurately tracks posture and offers immediate, engaging feedback. Accessible controls through voice commands, gestures, and a mobile app ensure ease of use for older adults. The accompanying app delivers personalized weekly challenges to enhance posture and promote physical activity, tailored to the user’s abilities and progress. A reward system incentivizes participation, making the device a holistic and engaging tool for improving the health and wellbeing of older adults.

Development Process

The initial concept centered on creating a posture detection system that was minimal and unobtrusive. The goal was to design a device that older adults could comfortably use in their daily lives without feeling overwhelmed or intimidated. This inspired the idea of a compact, sleek camera that would seamlessly blend into any living space.

With its minimal design, advanced technology, and user-friendly features, this posture detection camera effectively meets the needs of older adults, encouraging them to stay active and healthy in a simple and enjoyable way.

The mobile app enhances motivation with personalized challenges for improving posture and physical activity. It includes a reward system offering discounts on products/services. The app features an intuitive interface for easy use across devices and provides daily posture summaries for progress tracking. Built on user feedback, it ensures effective support in achieving health goals effortlessly.
