RISE AND FALL OF INDIAN CINEMA HALLS DUE TO THE EVOLUTION IN ARCHITECTURE Year: 2022

AIM: The aim of this research is to study the evolution of theatres over the past centuries in America and in India, identify the aspects that led us to the present-day cinema houses. To understand what led to the rise and the fall of Theatres in terms of architecture and the impact of that on a country that worships cinema.

India as a country is full of movie enthusiasts besides, between 1500 and 2000 movies being produced in a year in almost 20 languages, out of that- about 1000 are from the Hindi film industry; famously known as Bollywood. These many films being produced each year, makes India one of the major film-producing countries in the world, crossing its own record by each passing year.

In recent times we have come to the realization that the country is not biased towards any particular industry, with regional movies like Bahubali and KGF breaking the records at the box office, temples being made for actors across and the theatres being constructed in common architectural styles, the industry unites the country in an unexpected way.

Soon after the trailer of a movie is launched, we start waiting for the film, apart from this there is another aspect which is equally important for the films to be screened- the spaces to view these films in. These spaces are famous among people as cinemas and theatres.

Cinema halls and movie theatres have a vast history and have evolved through the years. With each passing decade, the architecture of these structures has been majorly influenced by the revolutions and wars. One of the most common styles observed is Art Deco, as when the theatres became a popular typology in the country, the predominant art movement happened to be that and hence the influence.

The dissertation is an in-depth study about the evolution of the theatres starting from Art Deco as a major architectural style to our homes acting as theatres in recent times.

Social-Inclusion Social inclusion by improving the terms on which individuals and groups take part in society-improving the ability, opportunity, and dignity of those disadvantaged on the basis of their identity.

Connecting Greens Ensure efficient and diverse uses of streets bv providing spaces for social interactions and gatherings, cultural activities, and commercial uses. Incorporate green infrastructure strategies wherever possible.

Move curbs, change alignments, reclaim space, and redirect traffic.

STRATEGIES Multi-Modal-Transit-System Design for people first, creating functional walking and cycling and vehicular networks that bind the city together and provide safe access to every street. RE-GENESIS

Re-Genesis, a vertical hybrid structure, aims to regenerate the environment while emphasizing on the importance of culture through the form articulation and programmatic distribution of the resilient hybrid.

This Eco - Cultural Hub contains programmes within the building which focus on increasing social interaction and promote the ecological concept of clean airland wind circulation.

FORM DEVELOPMENT

LOCATION: Sunset Boulevard, Golf Course Road, Gurugram BUILDING TYPOLOGY Commercial Hotel Retail Office BUILT UP AREA: 36,790 sq.m

The first step was to split the area into two blocks to activate the intersection - using two adjacent quadrants. Next the blocks were spilt into floor plates and the hotel residential functions were separated. The floorplates were curved and staggered based on the sun and wind movement. Finally the external smog eating and solar panel facade treatement was adopted along the Eastern and Southern sides.

VNIT WORKSHOP ACUMEN OF ARCHITECTURAL FORMS

The STTP focused on thinking about architecture, through a conscious view on the patterns, the concepts and the architectural formative ideas, which aid in the evolution of an architectural built-form. The shared understanding among great buildings of past & present were the arenas of discussion in this training program, as they demonstrate basic architectural ideas, which are perceptible as constructive patterns. The basic purpose of this training program was to promote the understanding of architectural patterns, to examine original similarities over the time and to process architectural analysis as a tool for design. This training program served as a think tank on conceptual idea evolution during design process.

This unique training program for architectural students, acted as a catalyzer for grooming the deign thought process broadly covering various approaches and strategies under the topic- Architecture and Design, Site Planning, Form and Space, Principles of Design, Climate Responsive Architecture, Elements of Building Architecture and Circulation to built-spaces on residential projects. he training program aimed to document an architectural project through 6 stages. The registered participants were grouped by the training program team and explore hands on practice sessions ONLINE. Each group was supplemented with a study kit as a resource material for the training program The study kit would comprises of 3 sets of material about the selected project as 1-The project information, 2-The sample Auto-Cad file & 3-The analytical templates.

Information : The hornbill house has easy access to a road or footpath. It is basically located on a old drying yard, sitting at the edge omountains and tea gardens, thereby integrating each view of house from different directions.

The walls are composite, of stone on the outside and mud bricks on the inside. The striking roof of the villa invokes a sense of flight that one feels while gazing at the views of the valley and hills from within the building.

This zero debris project, has been built with local mud. Steady temperature on the inside of the building, use of low VOC/ non Toxic paints are some of the features of this project.

IIT WORKSHOP NATIONAL INFORMATION CENTRE FOR EARTHQUAKE ENGINEERING

India has a very serious earthquake problem. To mitigate earthquake disasters, the profession needs to be up-to-date on developments in the field. The National Information Centre of Earthquake Engineering (NICEE - established 1999) at Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT Kanpur) is intended to collect and maintain information resources/publication on earthquake engineering and make these availabe to interested users, as well as to undertake other outreach activities with a view to mitigate earthquake disaster CONSTRUCTION BRIEF: 1. Undergraduate Hostel (adequate toilets, kitchen, dining, common room, library and reading area with computer facilities, must be provided as per codes) • For Boys: 1 hostel, with occupancy for 200 persons in each. Consider 40 triple seater rooms and 80 single seater rooms.

• For Girls: 2 hostels, with occupancy for 200 persons in each. Consider 40 nos. triple rooms and 80 single seater rooms in each hostel.

Semester: Summer Workshop Year: 2021 Studio: Earthquake Resistant Design Studio Guides: Meera Shirolkar Nayanmoni Chetia In collaboration with: Ajoy Ghosh (Rani Rashmoni School of Architecture, Durgapur)

INFORMATION : The proposed site is in village Chamola, near Sharyu river in Uttarakhand and is approached through Asgoli Road. The land use pattern of the site and its adjacent area is mainly institutional and commercial. The transportation network is well established along with other services and amenities in the vicinity. The site plan shows the 9m wide Kapkot Bageshwar road (in yellow).

SEISMIC ACTIVITY : According to the Seismic Zoning Map of Uttarakhand most areas of Uttarakhand state are situated in the following seismic zones with seismic hazard as shown - Zone V: MSK intensity IX or higher earthquake is probable to occur; Zone IV: MSK Intensity VIII earthquake is probable to occur.

The key focus of this earthquake resistant traditional architecture is symmetry with respect to mass and rigidity so as to minimize torsion and stress concentration.

festival of places

The Festival of Places a unique initiative by CATTS celebrates People, Places and Memories. Places are at the heart of human experience and shared spaces in the public realm greatly contribute to defining it. After the success of The Festival of Places in 2017, the festival this year intends to explore places and their unique attributes and memories through stories woven around them.

The main highlight of the festival was ‘Place Stories’ a series of online storytelling sessions that will help understand the hidden dimensions, multiple interpretations and varied memories associated with places highlighting distinct characteristics of places as well as unravelling the bond that people have with places, a connection that lives through their experiences.

Theme - Exploring Memory in Places All places have stories and stories are a powerful medium to elicit emotional responses. They have an ability to reinvent a place and a community, and reimagine the perception of three dimensional spaces to an active, fluid, dynamic interconnected habitat.

The team invited entries from young professionals, students and researchers from across the disciplines of architecture, design, planning and other urban environment related fields such as urban geography, anthropology, social and environmental sciences, humanities, arts and the crafts, to tell their Place Stories. The challenge was to create a narration which helps people fall in love with the place, or jolts them to reality, or simply takes them into a dimension of surreal experience. The theme in the year 2020 for Place Stories 1.0 was Memory in Places.

Out of the last 50 years of rapid development of the city, I have been with it for the past 20 years, which has allowed me to know its history and love it with all of my heart and soul.

Each of the places in this world holds a history, a history that makes us think in terms of what if? Bhopal, originally known as “BHOJPAL”, was not a city with lakes, it was in the 11th century that the king “RAJA BHOJ” Commissioned the construction of the lake for the purpose of healing as it has water coming in from several rivers. Gradually the number of lakes in the city increased to 17 and has now decreased to a total of 11, some have dried and some have been filled in to construct houses.

The beautiful city with lakes was ruled by the Mughals, Begums, in particular, leading to an advancement in education, culture, and architecture.

In terms of architecture, it has a contrast, the city has Taj-ul-Masajid, the third-largest mosque in the world, and Dhai Seedi Ki Masjid, the smallest mosque in the world. The city definitely astonishes you with the contrasts it has, the city is a place that has to be acknowledged for its beauty and architecture.

The city is known mainly for two things, one is as the Capital city and other for the Gas tragedy. But it is not just these two which make this city popular, it is also its beauty, its greenery, its rank to be one of the most clean cities in India that make people want to visit it at least once. This Capital city is unlike any other Capital city in this country, It is calm, silent, clean and green.

The city is divided into two parts, fairly distinct from each other. A lot of old architecture (significantly Mughal and some of Hindu, as the oldest temple of the city, is in old Bhopal- which was constructed under the Begum rule ) is in the old and contemporary ( for example Bharat Bhawan by Charles Korea) is in the new. The city does not have a majority of any religion in particular and therefore we can see the influence of Hindu, Muslim, Buddhist, Christian, Sikh, and that of British while wandering the streets of Bhopal.

This city of lakes could also be called a city of museums since it has multiple museums that develop interest towards sciences, environment, humans, art, and much more. It has some of the most motivating spaces created by some of the leading architects like Charles Korea, Revathi Kamath, and many more.

The Tribal Museum, Manav Sanghralaya, and The State Museum happen to be adjacent to each other and add up to the glory of the city.

To a person living in a small city , it is always intimidating to go and live in a bigger city. Bhopal being a small city has less opportunities to offer to its people when compared to any metro city in this country, despite having some of the leading institutions of the country, the intake still remains less and the exposure lacks. The city has seen an increase in education rate and hence the total number of institution has also increased but still has a runway to cross before it takes a flight.

Even after residing in several cities around the world, this is the place where one would want to be, after all the chaos.

How does one describe his own city?

It is so much more than just glory.

It is a place that cannot be replaced.

It is a feeling that has all the healings.

It is in the memories that make the stories.

It is it’s ability that is to bring in stability.

This is the city where I was born , It resides inside of my heart , and my heart in this city.

A city that has so much more than just greenery.

It has birds chirping, lakes calmly sitting, trees standing upright, mountains at a height, oh! It is such a delight.

A city that is so much more than just a Capital, it has the streets clean, the leaves that are green, the water that is bright, all of this is a sight, oh! It is such a delight.

Ruled between the 9th and 13th century, It was a vast empire of the Chola dynasty.

Life under king Rajaraja I was magical, And Thanjavur was its capital.

Art and architecture flourished under the Chola, which had seen temple styles like Nagara, Dravida, and Vesara.

Categorized under the Dravidian style of architecture, the Brihedesvara temple is located in the modern-day Tanjore (then Thanjavur). The temple was commissioned in the first quarter of the 11th century by the Chola king Rajaraja the great, the size of which was a gigantic step forward in the evolution of religious architecture in the southern part of India. The proportions are considerable, as the main structure alone is 180 feet long, above which rises a massive pyramidal tower of 190 feet. A significant wellspring of data connected with building and development has been engraved all through the temple’s plinth.

Enclosed within a double wall, the gopurams in the east open up to the courtyard, which leads to the Nandi Mandapa, a later development of the temple. Entered by a flight of steps is the Mukhmandapa, housing the Bhairava sculpture. Past this design is the pillared corridor called the mahamandapa. Further ahead, connected to the garbagriha is the ardhamandapa. This structure can be entered from three sides, the front and through the massive gateways situated on the north and south sides. Past this is the two-storied garbhagriha or the sanctum sanctorum with the massive linga in the center. Apart from this, there are multiple shrines of various gods and goddesses. The smaller shrines within the temple complex include those of Subramanyar and Ganesha who might have been a part of the ashta parivara devatas. Out of these, the shrine dedicated to one of the saints and the chief administrator Chandikeshwara, is the only shrine which was a part of the original plan envisioned by Rajaraja and continues to be in its original form. Situated close to the vimana, it is a small shrine containing some of the earliest inscriptions recorded by Rajaraja VIMANA MAHA MANDAPA
