SHADY CANYON SUMMER ACTIVITIES 2010

LOOKING FORWARD TO A GREAT SUMMER Let me first start by thanking all Members, Committees and the Board of Directors for your support of the huge undertakings we have planned this summer. On May 4th we begin our fairway transition from Rye Grass to Bermuda Princess 77. We also begin construction on the expansion of the Golf Patio and putting green. We have worked hard to be able to provide our Members with numerous options for golf, entertainment and dining experiences during the course closure. As always, Member service is our priority. To that end, we have made arrangements for our Members to play golf at most of the private golf clubs here in Orange County. For your convenience, our Golf Shop staff will handle all tee-time reservations for you. You will receive the same personal service you have come to rely on. Simply contact our Golf Shop during normal Club hours to make a reservation or if you have any questions at (949) 856-7070. In addition to individual tee times weÊve arranged for the LadiesÊ and MenÊs Skins Games to be played at Oak Creek Golf Club and Strawberry Farms Golf Club. Please be sure to register with our Golf Shop to reserve your spot. Specific dates are available in the Golf Calendar section. There are many additional golf activities planned at the driving range and short game practice areas which everyone is sure to enjoy. This summer will be packed full of entertainment and events for the whole family. Our Annual Wine Festival will kick off the summer activities followed by a Western BBQ, The Art of Entertaining, Car Show, Fall Fashion Show, and the 2nd Annual Campout with „Uncle Buck‰. And be sure not to miss our Thursday Poolside Cookouts with live entertainment. The addition of new Mixed Grill Patio furniture has many of you are choosing to dine outdoors. Join us for cocktails and dinner throughout the summer either indoors or on the patio. We will continue to have live music, special menus and a wonderful assortment of libations. A perfect location for a perfect summer evening. As always, my door is open for discussions or casual conversation, please stop by anytime. Sincerely,

Steve Buck General Manager

GOLF COURSE CONVERSION T H E T R A N S I T I O N T O P R I N C E S S 7 7 B E R M U DA FA I RWAY S

The first step of the conversion to Bermuda fairways begins with a chemical application to remove the existing ryegrass and the undesirable Poa annua populations. The Monday before the closure we will begin the treatment on the 1st holes of the front nine. This chemical product requires about seven days for the application to do its job of killing the entire plant.

P R O J E C T S TA G E S

On May 3rd when we officially close, the chemical application will continue

We will be moving through the course with the par

where we left off. The holes that have already been treated can have the 2nd step

seedbed for the seeding process.

The slit-seed method of propagation is done with a specialized machine that is driven by tractors. It creates a slit into the seedbed and drops the seeds into the fairway at a depth that allows the seed to remain moist. This is done in two directions and is calibrated to plant 2 lbs of seed per 1000 square feet. This is the optimum seed rate for establishment. After the seed is down, we follow with our turf rollers to insure that there is good seed to soil contact. Pre plant fertilizer is applied and we are now ready for light daily irrigation to keep the seed from drying out. Once the seed has emerged and has adequate time for the root system to develop, we will be irrigating during the night.

Now what is required is a warm to hot summer with lots of sunny days. This coupled with frequent fertilization applications will get the turf kicked into gear by the second month. Mowing will begin around this time to help eliminate any broadleaf weeds that emerge. The most important part for you, the member, is to remain patient. If everything goes well, I am expecting that carts would be able to go out on the fairways when we reopen. If however there are some thin areas, there will be some cart restrictions as needed. The fairways will need two years to completely develop a cushion or thatch layer. Once this has occurred, we will see a denser condition during the winter months than what we are seeing the first winter on the test area on the 3rd hole. This is, in my opinion, a small price to pay for the enjoyment of our fairways during the longer days of summer when we play the majority of our rounds.

A photo summary of the different steps and stages of the conversion that took place last summer on the 3rd hole are available on the next page, I hope that you will remember that we are changing the fairways to give our membership and the reputation of Shady Canyon something that we can all be proud of.

Respectfully, David Major C.G.C.S.

R E V O LV E R H E R B I C I D E A P P L I C AT I O N This chemical treatment is designed to remove the Ryegrass and Poa annua in the fairways. This application does not injury the original Bermuda that has survived the last nine years of overseeding. There is a 7 day waiting period to allow the chemical to work before we begin the next step.

L OW E R H E I G H T O F C U T & V E RT I C U T T I N G The fairway cutting units are lowered to remove as much dying leaf material as possible. This is followed by verticutting the fairways to begin the process of establishing a good seedbed.

A G G R E S S I V E A E R I F I C AT I O N This allows for the maximum amount of holes for the placement of sand into the root zone for improved drainage and leaching of salts from reclaimed irrigation.

ROLLING SEED This is done to ensure good seed to soil contact which is required for a successful germination and establishment of the turf.

L I G H T A N D F R E Q U E N T I R R I G AT I O N The first few weeks require a moist condition for the germination process.

F E R T I L I Z E R A P P L I C AT I O N S A grow in fertilization program will be done with a balanced fertilizer applied every two weeks to push the development of the new seedlings.

ADDITIONAL COURSE PROJECTS This closure gives us a great opportunity to repair damaged cart path areas on the course. The best example of this is the 5th tee area. This area would be difficult to repair during play due to the limited access to the area for both maintenance equipment and membership play.

In addition to this project the greens will be aerified with additional attention to Poa annua removal. We will also be treating the roughs, green surrounds and approaches with a herbicide to remove established Poa areas. After these areas die out we will be re-establishing Rye Grass in its place. The end result will be a more uniform playing surface with reduced Poa. This benefits the important task of Poa control in the greens due to a reduced seed production.

We will also be completing the Clubhouse as well as the Spa and Fitness Center landscaping during the closure. The main goal is to add more color into our existing areas. We have started this process by removing high maintenance hedges, replacing with new, healthy, colorful plants and flowers.

PATIO EXPANSION PROJECT The addition of the new golf patios & putting green will be handled by David Major and his maintenance staff. For a better established putting surface we have opted to seed the area to allow for a superior green and final product. The first phase of this will be to remove the existing plant material including shrubs and trees. Once the cement walkways are demolished and removed the green cavity will be excavated down to the existing drain, where we will install the USGA drainage system, then cover with 3/8‰ washed pea gravel. Once complete, we are ready for the greens mix; lab tested and approved. The next stage is grading, compacting and firming up the sand, preparing the seed bed (lightly shaken, not stirred). Precise seeding for the green will begin with a pre-plant fertilizer. Following, the important step of keeping the seed moist until germinated. We will be closely monitoring the development and be opening for our putting pleasure in the late fall.
