From the Commodore Bill Melbostad, Commodore / commodore@sfyc.org

nnouncing Hank Easom was the selected 2014 Yachtsman of the Year will always be one of my highlights as Commodore – Hank’s contributions and accomplishments are emblematic of the Emmett L. Rixford Trophy, and the pride of The SFYC. Equally gratifying is S/C Ken Frost’s nomination to Honorary Life Membership. Ken’s stewardship of the Historical Committee is a critical mission to our Club, with the product of his work benefitting The SFYC for endless future generations. I congratulate both of these honored and well deserving SFYC yachtsman. I have greatly appreciated all the kind words of encouragement during my term as Commodore. Nothing was more satisfying, though, than seeing so many members and my friends thoroughly enjoying themselves at the Commodore’s Ball. The energy in The Club that that might was contagious, and demonstrates how much our members care about their club, and the strong bond that unites us. In fact, the members are everything: without their energy and vitality, all we have is an empty building, and not a yacht club. Thank you all for sharing my wonderful sendoff party; it will be truly memorable for Frances and me, for years to come. Another event where I sensed a united Club was at our November 11 Members’ meeting. It was standing room only, with nearly 200 Members and spouses in attendance, joining our Architects David Ross and George Jansen, of Bull, Stockwell, and Allen to update the current status of the Cove House replacement plan, and development of the adjacent grounds. Most members with whom I have spoken after the meeting believe we’re on the correct course, and completing this project is important to the Club’s future vitality. It was also evident that the Facilities Planning Committee, led by R/C Ed Lynch, has created a practical and comprehensive proposal, based on the findings of our Needs Assessment Study. I extend my gratitude to Manon Baze, our volunteer Member Bulletin Editor for the last couple of seasons. I have received many complements on the quality of our newsletter since Manon assumed the Editors desk. The Bulletin is an important connection to The Club for our Members, and for 2015, the Board has charted its course slightly differently: the editing responsibilities will shift to be done in-house, by Evelyne Swinscoe-Byer, and the number of issues will be reduced. The Board also encourages Members to access the website, sfyc.org, and the Sunday Bow Wave email, which offer more current communications, and links to photos of Club events. Once again, thanks go to Manon and her creative and stalwart editing Committee, for another great year, and their stewardship of the Bulletin.

A

The Cruising Committee, led by Lisa Klairmont and her Co-Chair, Harold Kleiderman, have had a great year organizing a varied itinerary, up the Delta, around the Bay, and to take in a Giant’s game, berthed in South Beach Harbor. The popular cruises offered multiple SFYC burgee sightings in our favorite harbors around the Bay and the Delta. My sincere gratitude goes out to Lisa and Harold, and the hard working cruise leaders, for providing this great opportunity for Members to practice the art of boating, pleasant rendezvous, and creating great fellowship amongst us. As I review 2014, I well remember the trepidation I felt when I began my term as Commodore. My more ‘practically thinking’ friends warned me that serving as The SFYC Commodore would be all-consuming, and difficult to carry on a career and any normalcy of a home life. Miraculously, none of this came true! I have thoroughly enjoyed being your Commodore, and it has been the highest honor to serve The Club where I grew up. I’m sure, without the incredibly supportive Flag Officers, the Board of Directors, the highly functioning Committees and their Chairs, and SFYC GM Steve DePetro and Staff, 2014 would have been far more challenging. One supporter who stands out, playing the most important supporting role is my wife, Frances Barbour. Clearly, her successes as Entertainment Chair were for all to see. What may have been transparent is the manner in which she embraced my commitment to the yacht club, and enabled me not only to serve, but also to thoroughly enjoy the experience. In 2014, I see many SFYC successes: we are in better financial standing in a decade, Club use and member satisfaction is at a long time high, and we see a happy and smiling staff providing superb service and hospitality. Our SFYC Club Series races thrived, with the most competitors on the water in many years, and with an active cruising contingent, we continued the excellence of our on-water SFYC legacy. My emotions run high, and full of gratitude. There are far too many of you to thank by name, but what more can say to all of you, But THANK YOU! By the time you read this, I will have passed the leadership of the club onto the very capable Commodore Suzie Moore. I have full confidence in Suzie to lead the Board and continue to move The Club forward in a positive direction, and maintain the excellence of The San Francisco Yacht Club. Smooth Sailing, Commodore Bill Melbostad

Happy December. This month marks the end of my run as the Editor for the Bulletin for the past 1.5+ years. The Board has chosen to move in a different direction and will bring the editing completely in house, under the steady and very capable hands of Evelyne SwinscoeByer. I have very much enjoyed vonlunteering my time undertaking this endeavor along with my incredible editing Committee: Joan Bekins, P/P Mimi Cornelius, P/P Sally Secor, P/P Joan Harter, Bob McDermott, Leslie Richter, and P/P Jane Watts and Evelyne Swinscoe-Byer. I very much look forward to seeing you all around The Club. All Submissions can still go to Bulletin@sfyc.org, as these will forward to Evelyne now. Best, Manon Settlemier Baze

Fall Training Week By Ashley Perrin

Photos by Ross Tibbits

O

ctober’s Fall Training Week marked the sixth in a series of ISAF training classes offered by The SFYC since 2012. We are proud to have trained over 400 people during the past two years, and are the only providers of this ISAF sanctioned training in the Western US. While the primary training focus in on Sea Survival, other courses such as navigation, VHF operation and first aid are also offered. The ISAF Sea Survival course is required for offshore racing outside the US, and we continue to have participation by people in preparation for the Sydney Hobart and Fastnet races. Paul Cunningham and I have had the pleasure of working with our students in a very hands-on curriculum. Rather than a simple lecture format, we get people into the water to experience the challenges of getting into a life raft. We also provide hands-on experience with various types of flares, fire extinguishers, and cutting instruments. The hands-on nature of the training is vital to increasing not only personal safety but that of offshore sailing in general. The diversity of experience within our classes means we are teaching people with a range of offshore experience – from none to Volvo Ocean Race veterans. One recent participant, a ‘round the world race skipper commented that our in-water training was more realistic than any course he had previously participated in. Why? Because our life raft training is held in

the cold salty Bay rather than a heated swimming pool. During the most recent training, five members of the new Rio 100 team including the owner participated in the course. They commented that the course drove home the need for everyone on the boat to have taken part in the training. It is always very rewarding when people who are required to come to training and really don’t want to be there walk away from the course with a positive perspective! These sessions are made possible by the extensive support from The San Francisco Yacht Club and its members. Race Council Chair Michelle Farabaugh spearheads the organization of club facility use. R/C Ed Lynch facilitates the use of the Belvedere fire station for flare and fire training. Commodore Bill Melbostad continues to give informative talks on maintenance/survey issues that can impact a safe passage. Bryan Chong whose contribution cannot be overstated shares his experience as a surviving crew member on Low Speed Chase. I am particularly in awe of his talk and how candid he is about the accident. Our Spring Training sessions will be offered from March 5 – 15, 2015. Whether you race offshore or in the Bay, our Sea Survival course will bring you insights you can put to use every time you set sail. Course offerings, details, and sign-ups can be found at www.sfyc.org/training. We hope to see you in one of our courses in 2015! DECEMBER 2014 THE BULLETIN • www.sfyc.org • 5

Race Recognition Night By Michelle Farabaugh SFYC Regattas & Training

R

ace Recognition Night is a night to celebrate both the SFYC racers, but also the 125 volunteers that make our race program the premiere race program on the West Coast. 2014 proved to be another great year with 35 regattas and 53 days of racing on the Bay including our newest addition, the Multihull Regatta, one of our favorite regattas that was brought back, Midnight Moonlight, Marathon Madness, and the highly-competitive Express 27 Nationals and Audi Melges 20 North Americans. John Kilroy, Samba Pa Ti, placed 1st in the Audi Melges 20 NAs while Liam Kilroy, Wildman, (just 11 years old) placed 5th. Doug Wilhelm, Wilco, was the only Corinthian sailor to participate in the NAs. This regatta was practice for SFYC to host the Audi Melges 20 Worlds in 2015. SFYC Leukemia Cup Regatta continues to be the largest grossing regatta in the country. The SFYC Club Championship Series had 37 boats participate this year. Thank you to Woodlands Market and Trumer Pils for their gracious sponsorship and making The Club Series more fun than ever. Congratulations to the King George V Perpetual Trophy winners - Spinnaker Division season winner Commodore Bill Melbostad, Frances Melbostad and Steve Fentress, JR and Non-spinnaker Division winners Glenn Isaacson and John Carapiet, Q.

Corinthian Cup - Steve Fentress, Shawn Bennett and Tom Purdy Special & Outside Regattas There are many special regattas that are participated in each year. SFYC was represented at the prestigious NYYC Invitational again this year. The SF Cup included not only a men’s team, but also a women’s and youth team this year. The Lipton Cup was raced in San Diego with SFYC coming in fourth after the tie breaker. The Corinthian Cup is a challenge between the Annapolis Yacht Club and SFYC rotating between the two locations. Both a youth team skippered by Jack Barton and including Alex Moody, Sammy Shea and Chloe Holder and an adult team skippered by Shawn Bennett and including Melissa Purdy, Tom Purdy, Nick Gibbens and Jon Perkins raced and brought the trophy back to SFYC. There were countless other 1st in class finishers from SFYC. I will highlight just a few here. Jim Cunningham with Jeff Madrigali, USA 1404, Etchells National Championships; Hank Easom, Yucca, Jessica Cup and Jazz Cup; Chris Kostanecki, Jennifer, Big Daddy; Jib Martens, Freedom, and Ryle Radke, Friday Harbor, SSS Farallones Race; Chris &

The SFYC Training Program continues to focus on sea survival and boater education. Under the organization and instruction of Ashley Perrin and Paul Cunningham, both a Spring and Fall Training Week were conducted for ISAF Sea Survival, basic and advanced navigation, weather, first aid, etc. SFYC has become the premiere destination for hands-on sea survival instruction with participation from racers participating in Fastnets, Sidney to Hobart, Pacific Cup and many other regattas as well as cruisers. 6 • DECEMBER 2014 THE BULLETIN • www.sfyc.org

In order to organize and run a race program of this size and caliber requires the work of the Race Council, staff and 531 days of volunteers. Thank you all for your hard work, especially those of the Race Council that put in endless hours making sure every detail is taken care of. Jeff Zarwell, PRO organizer, Tristan Ruhland, boat management, Nancy DeMauro, trophies, Madeline Morey, scoring, Shannon Cantwell, volunteer coordinator, Ashley Perrin, safety training, Larry Drew, arbitration, Tom Roberts, protest committee, Bob McDermott, Club Series chair, and Leslie Richter, marketing and communications. Thank you V/C Suzie Moore for being our flag representative. And we couldn’t do any of this without the dedication and hard work of Forrest Gay, sailing director, and our new race administrator, Lisa Turner. Congratulations to Shannon Cantwell for being the Race Council MVP of the year for all of the work she has done on Race Council, the 15 days she spent volunteering on the water and for starting the Thursday night women’s sailing program on the J/22s! In addition to this great team, it took 15 PROs, 12 regatta chairs, 12 protest committee chairs/arbitrators/umpires, 7 borrowed boats, 125 volunteers and 531 volunteer days.

Without you, we would not have the best Race Program in the country, hands down! This year we started a new award, the Race Volunteer Race Council MVP Shannon Cantwell and Race MVP Volunteer MVP Alex Rothenberg award. Congratulations to Alex Rothenberg, 21 days on the water for your first year back in the Bay Area to volunteer is outstanding! Thank you everyone that gave their time, their advice and their support in 2014. Being the Race Chair for the past two years was not without its challenges, but seeing the smiling racers when they return to The Club makes the many, many hours of work all worth while. I want to thank the SFYC board of directors, staff, members and my Race Council for always being there when I needed it most. I am proud to be turning over the Race Council Chair to Nancy DeMauro in 2015. See you all on the water!

he 100th challenge for the Sir Thomas Lipton Cup Regatta, was held by San Diego Yacht Club October 31 to November 2,2014. In 1903, knowing of Sir Thomas Lipton’s respect for sportsmanship, Commodore Lucien Blochman of the San Diego Yacht Club wrote to the tea baron requesting that a trophy be created in his name for West Coast yacht racing excellence. During the 100 year span of the Lipton Cup, the yachts chosen for the regatta have ranged from IOR and PHRF handicap racers to one-design boats. This year the regatta was raced in J/105’s. Twelve of the top US yacht clubs competed in the one design event. The San Francisco Yacht Club was proudly represented by Chris Perkins as skipper, Craig Healy, Paul Cayard, Jon Perkins, Phil Perkins, and Tom Purdy. The racing conditions were generally light over the weekend. The top spots during the regatta were held by San Francisco YC,

proceeded toward Alcatraz. The winds held going to Southhampton, and the tail end of the ebb carried our heroes home. Some boats decided to drop out early in the race. But the boats who decided to hang in there all finished within an hour of each other before the time limit of 16:30.

By Jay Hooker, PRO

T

his is a race that dates back to 1953. Our beautiful plaque (depicting an etching of the course) was donated by Leonard Delmas and is on display at The Club. Historically, The Round The Island Race encompasses starting at Belvedere Cove, taking Treasure Island to port, Southhampton Platform to port, and on to the finish line off of the Corinthian Yacht Club. However, due to the dismantling of the cantilever section of the Bay Bridge, or if there are light winds, it was decided to have the option (course 2) of taking Alcatraz to port rather than Treasure Island. Since the powers to be (ie The U.S. Coast Guard) had given our fleet of 22 boats

Our race heros are as follows: SPINNAKER DIVISION: First: Craig Page Second: Hank Easom Third: Laurence Pulgram

NON-SPINNAKER DIVISION: First: Steve Rogers and Bob Sellers Spirit Second: Glenn Isaacson Q Third: Jib Martens Freedom The overall winner of the Round The Island perpetual trophy was Craig Page on Wuda Shuda. Great job Craig. We had an absolutely sterling crew on both Victory and Golden Retriever, a combination of old hands and new blood. The crew on Victory was S/C John Scarborough (guru), John Sanford (driver), Soren Hoy (guns), Shawn Davies and Janine Fujioka (recorders), and Torben Hoy (assistant to the PRO). On Golden Retriever was Jerry Eaton (driver) and Al MacLeod (anchor puller a thankless job). On land, Lisa Turner was scorer. Nancy DeMauro provided some very slick trophies, and Larry Drew was in charge of protests (a very lonely job since there never are any). I trust this gives you an idea on how many people it takes to run a race. Weather permitting, we look forward to seeing you racers next year for this very historic event.

Craig Page, Commodore Bill Melbostad, and Jay Hooker permission to proceed under the cantilever section, the only reason to alter history and take course 2 would be if the winds were too light. As our Race Committee set out to the starting line, we were aware that the winds were hovering around 4 knots, barely enough for a start. However, with the insistence of guru S/C John Scarborough, we decided to start the race on time, but to use the short course (first time in history). Off the racers slowly went, in a light ebb, with two over earlies. As they proceeded southward, the ebb made it look like the racers would be headed out the Golden Gate Bridge (not a mark of the course). To add to the excitement. we realized that a freighter was headed out to The Gate. At this point, Victory left her station and headed out to The Gate to make sure none of our racers were in trouble. Luckily, the westerly filled in, the freighter (alerted by chase boat driver, Jerry Eaton) avoided all racers, and our fleet

n October 11 and 12 the IODs, Knarrs, Alerions, Birds, Bears, and Folkboats all enjoyed some beautiful sailing on Knox. It was a busy weekend on The Bay with frequent fly-overs by various aircraft for Fleet Week. The competitors fought a strong flood in light to medium breeze to get in three races over the two days. On Sunday a long postponement due to zero wind only left time for one good race. Congratulations to Knud Wibroe for winning two out of the three races and thus winning the Knarr fleet. Chris Herrmann won the Folkboats, Jock MacLean won the Birds, Robert Sellers won the Alerions, and Rich and Mark Pierce were 2nd in the IODs. What a great showing by SFYC racers!

HANK EASOM

THE SAN FRANCISCO YACHT CLUB 2014 YACHTSMAN OF THE YEAR By V/C Suzie Moore

he SFYC is pleased to announce that Hank Easom is the 2014 Yachtsman of the Year, based on his continued exceptional level of Corinthian yachting and his outstanding service to The San Francisco Yacht Club. This is the second time Hank has been selected as Yachtsman of the Year, and it is well deserved. With over 45 years actively racing under The SFYC burgee, as well has his continued dedication to the Harbor Committee, we are pleased to recognize him once again. Hank began sailing in Belvedere Cove and “hanging around” The SFYC at the age of seven and quickly developed a passion not just for sailing, but for boats in general. His first boat, a Moon boat, was named Rowdy after his dog. At that time, The SFYC

T

had an adults-only program. In the summer of 1942 Hank’s mother, Davida, wrote to The SFYC requesting that Hank and his older brother Bruce be allowed to join The Club. A few days later, Hank and his brother were approached by Cappie Robinson as they were launching their boat at The Club. It was an unpleasant encounter as Cappie insisted that they stop what they were doing since the hoist was for use by adult members only. Later that evening, there was an exchange between Hank’s father Harry and Cappie. Within one week of sending her request to The SFYC on behalf of her sons, the request was withdrawn – SFYC just wasn’t ready for eager youth sailors at this point in time – and Hank started sailing out of the Corinthian Yacht Club. By age 13, Hank had begun his legendary journey in boat building, repair and restoration. Becoming

disillusioned with his gardening chores at home, he asked his parents for the day off – “I’m going to get a job.” He took off in Rowdy and sailed to the Clipper Yacht Company in Sausalito. Hank said to Cliff Pederson and Shirley Morgan, “If you give me a job, I’ll buy a Clipper kit (a 20-foot plywood boat designed by Myron Spaulding) from you.” So Hank began creosoting piles, cleaning up and doing “kid work.” Too young to drive, Hank would commute from Belvedere Cove to Sausalito by sailboat regardless of the conditions. He eventually did buy the Clipper kit and assembled it at Clipper Yacht Company. He soon began racing this boat against his mentor Myron Spaulding. Once out of high school, Hank found that working on boats was more than just a job. In 1955, after completing two years of service in the United States Coast Guard, he started Easom Boat Works and began building boats. The first model was the Dasher, a 32-foot vessel built to race. Hank built four of these including the Serenade, which he raced successfully for three years. Hank continued to build and repair boats at Easom Boat Works until he closed the business in 1988 when new environmental regulations became challenging. (continued on page 16)

2014 GGYC Midwinters - Hank and many of his regular crew, Peter Schoen, Dave Gruver, Emmet Yaezell, Hans List, Charlie Mohn, and Laurence Pugram

The Yucca Years Hank purchased his signature boat, Yucca, approximately 50 years ago. He first saw the 1937 8-Meter on a foggy morning anchored off Newport Harbor Yacht Club while he was preparing to purchase a Cal 40. He was immediately drawn to the boat with its beautiful lines and high level of workmanship. No expense had been spared when it was built at an original cost of $40,000. Hank conferred with Myron Spaulding and bought the boat the next day. However, as Hank sailed the boat home with Jerry Rumsey, Charlie Weaver, and Aldo Alessio, he found it didn’t actually sail very well. After further consultation with Spaulding, Hank added 800 pounds of ballast, replacing the ballast cut out when the engine was installed. According to Hank, Yucca has been sailing fine ever since as is evident with the ever-expanding list of race wins. In the mid-to-late 60s, Hank did extensive work on Yucca to repair damages from an unfortunate incident at a fuel dock when gas fumes caused an explosion that tore apart the deck down the port side, sheared every deck beam through the genoa track and shattered every deck board. Thankfully, no one was seriously injured, but the boat required significant repairs. Hank asked Spaulding for design assistance, but was told that he should do it himself, which he did, leading to the current cabin-top design. Over the years Hank has continually maintained and upgraded Yucca and can frequently be seen at his dock power washing, varnishing, and ensuring that everything is in tip-top shape.

Hank’s love of sailing doesn’t just apply to racing – he can frequently be seen day sailing on the Bay with friends.

San Francisco Bay Etchells Fleet 12 In the 1970s, when Yucca was no longer competitive under the new IOR rules, Hank brought the first Etchells 22 to San Francisco Bay. He predicted that the one-design keelboat would be popular with local skippers and, sure enough the fleet soon included 15 boats sailed by some of the top Bay sailors including Jeff Madrigali, John Bertrand, and John Kostecki. The class swelled to over 20 boats for the 1980 qualifying series for the StFYC-hosted world championship. Since then, Hank has owned three different Etchells, starting with Wildfire and his last boat Final Final. With his longtime friend Charlie Mohn in the middle, Hank was a frequent podium finisher and won the local Fleet 12 championship in 1986. In 1989, The SFYC recognized Hank’s efforts in establishing the San Francisco Etchells fleet by sponsoring the Easom Founder’s trophy and regatta. This event is still a standard event on our regatta schedule each year and in 2011, at the age of 77, he enjoyed skippering Laurence Pulgram’s Magic (along with Laurence and Etchells guru Bill Barton) to win the Fleet 12 season championship. Although he’s no longer sailing in the fleet, his vision for the Etchells is still going strong as The SFYC and Fleet 12 start planning to host the 2016 Etchells North American Championship and the 2017 Etchells World Championship.

When others are racing against Hank and are curious what the course is, the response on many occasions has been, “Just follow Hank!” And when not sailing Yucca, Hank can often be found calling tactics and providing local knowledge on other people’s boats, some of them quite notable; Kealoha, Genuine Risk, Kokopelli, Morpheus, and Adele (2013 America’s Cup Superyacht Regatta). Age hasn’t slowed either Hank or Yucca down much. In 2011, Hank was recognized as the first skipper to compete in 50 Corinthian Yacht Club Mid-Winter Regattas. And in 2014 Hank and Yucca continued their winning ways with 1st in Class in the Corinthian Midwinter Series, Delta Ditch Run, Jazz Cup, Jessica Cup, Golden Gate Midwinters, and the best overall performance (120 boats) in the 2014 Robgatta. Hank’s love of sailing

doesn’t just apply to racing – he can frequently be seen day sailing on the Bay with friends.

Harbor Committee Hank has served on the Harbor Committee for decades. His institutional knowledge of our breakwater, dredging projects, docks and slips is extensive. He is also very dedicated to ensuring fair and consistent application of the Harbor Rules. His commitment to this very valuable function of our Club is well known and highly respected. Hank embodies all that is good in sailing. May we be blessed with many more years of your Corinthian spirited racing, seamanship and service that define the principles of our Club!

An Ongoing Legacy of Racing and Seamanship Hank has been racing for nearly 70 years and even a quick look at the results shows that he ‘places’ at least 90% of the time. At age 11 he received his first trophy – 3rd place – and it remains one of his favorites since it was his first and it involved racing against adults (there was no junior program back in those days). He has won in every class that he has raced including the Moon, Clipper, Dasher, and Etchells one-design classes and in IOR and PHRF handicap racing on Yucca. In 1972 he competed in the Olympic Trials in the 29-foot Dragon class, coming in second behind Don Cohan who earned a Bronze medal in the 1972 Games.

Hank Easom, Bill Barton and Laurence Pulgram won the 2011 Resin Regatta by one point.

Note: Filmmaker Oleg Harencar, Film Producer and Music Composer Don Zimmer and Graphic Designer Kat Lusher are in final stages of work on a documentary on Hank Easom’s life on San Francisco Bay that will be the second in the Life On the Water Film Series. This Series is dedicated to preserving the stories of extraordinary individuals whose lives are deeply connected to water. The trailer of the documentary featuring Hank was aired during the 2014 Annual Meeting on December 6, 2014. For those not available to attend, the link to this trailer is available at http://lifeonthewater.us. Stay tuned for a link in the Bulletin to the documentary on Hank when it is completed.

S

eason’s Greetings from the Harbor Committee. We wanted to share progress on a couple of items here at yearend. The Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP) rack that is installed at the South End of the Harbor, between the Youth and rowing docks has been a big success with the membership. We have filled up the two racks we have and would like to extend an invitation for members to apply for a waiting list. If we can build sufficient demand, we will build a new rack to accommodate as many members as possible. The SUP rate is $17.50/ month. Please put your name in with Kevin Tentis, our Harbormaster at Harbor@sfyc.org if you are interested in the SUP wait list. We like to say there are three ways to get into the Harbor 1) Harbor wait list 2) Partner with a slip holder 3) Racing Exemption. Year end is a good time to check your status on the waiting list. It can be found on the website at sfyc.org or posted in the Clubhouse. If you have any questions about your status on the wait list, please ask Kevin or a member of the Harbor Committee. If you are in the top thirty, you should be prepared to be offered a slip within the next twelve months. The list is moving more quickly than in years past and we often find people are not ready to accept a slip when their name finally comes up. When offered a slip, you have two choices: 1) Accept the slip assignment and put a boat in it within six months of acceptance or 2) Take a one-time deferral. You will not be offered a slip for a minimum of six months after taking a deferral. When offered a second time you must accept or be dropped from the list. Partnerships are a good way to access the Harbor. If you see someone’s name coming up on the list or ever thought about joining someone’s race program, you should approach that member about a partnership. All owners must be equal owners, all names listed on registration (DMV or Coast Guard), partnership agreement on file with the Harbormaster, and proper insurance maintained on the vessel. Finally, please congratulate David Cobb on assuming leadership of the 2015 Harbor Committee. 2014 members include: S/C Jim Robinson (co-chair), Charles Froeb (co-chair), Hank Easom, Matt Frymier, Christopher Lacey, R/C Ed Lynch, and Steve Stroub.

HARBOR TENANTS: WINTER IS COMING!! That means Storms and winds are right around the Corner… So remember to check: • • • •

Your lines for chaffing Your shackles for rust and wear Make sure your fenders are tied and placed properly Most of all check your Jib sheets and sails to make sure they are secure. This is the most dangerous oversight your SFYC harbor staff has to deal with in storms. When the Jib sheets get loose, they cause damage to boats, docks and are life threating to staff and members that try to secure them in already dangerous conditions.

S/C Tad Lacey ad learned to sail on Lake Tahoe and joined The Club in 1968 as a Junior Member. His parents supported his passion for sailing and bought him a Rhodes 19 because they were worried about him sailing boats that were too small for the San Francisco Bay. Tad started racing for The SFYC in Rhodes 19 in SYRA. In 1974 the Rhodes 19 Nationals were held at SFYC. Tad and fellow SFYC Junior Sailors Don Jesberg and David Walker won the regatta. This was the first of a number of championship regattas for Tad. He has sailed in about thirty SF Cups and is the only person to have sailed in five separate decades of The SF Cup. Tad has won and lost in every position in a boat, including skipper. Also in 1974, S/C Jake Wosser invited Tad to race in The Perpetual Cup on Bohemia against SDYC in Kingfish. Tad feels fortunate to have raced actively with Jake in the 1970’s on Dave Allen’s’ boat IMP, The Admirals Cup in England, and in the SORC. David Allen put Tad on the SFYC Membership Committee when Tad was twenty-six years old. There has not been a year since that Tad has not been on a SFYC committee or served on The Board. He was Commodore in 2013. When asked why members should get involved in The Club Tad responded, “The main stay of The Club is participation. Quite simply, you get out of it what you put into it. One starts by telling one of the committee chairs that you would like to join the committee. People who do a good job on a committee are recognized and are usually the ones who are put forward on The Board.”

lthough we did not have enough sign-ups for a Club cruise to Half Moon Bay this year, our friends Port Captain Rich and Shawn Wideman and the Myron and Marina Eisenzimmer created their own mini-cruise, described by Marina as follows: PUMPKIN DAYS AT HALF MOON BAY

By Marina Eisenzimmer S/V Mykonos Marina and Myron Eisenzimmer sailed Mykonos to Half Moon Bay’s Pillar Point for a delightful week-end with Rich and Shawn Wideman. Their October 17 departure for Mexico was the latest time in the year they had ever cruised the area. But found the weather outstanding; warm and no fog anywhere. The boats had never before been escorted south by so many whales prancing in the air showing off. The Myron Eisenzimmer and Shawn Wideman

couples’ Friday night dinner was at Mezzaluna, an old favorite not far from the harbor. Saturday they woke to warm sunshine and set off to explore Princeton by the Sea. As Shawn and Marina walked the empty streets they came across a sign advertising wine tasting, and so they did at Trojak-Knier. The wines were quite good but expensive. However, Shawn did purchase a chardonnay. The other "samplers" brought their dogs in. One cute pooch dressed in an orange Giants sweater was named Buster Posey. Turns out the Giants donate money to help people adopt animals, hence the name. Saturday night all the streets and restaurants were packed no one seemed to be downtown for the Pumpkin Festival. Our travelers selected a new restaurant for dinner, called Flavor and they finished of the evening watching a spectacular sunset. Sunday two couples sailed back to SFYC feeling relaxed and warm, having spent pumpkin days at Half Moon Bay. That wraps up the SFYC Cruising for 2014. Look in future editions of the Bulletin and Bow Wave for news of the Cruising Program for 2015. Lisa Klairmont & Harold Kleiderman Cruise Committee Co-chairs
