Here There and Everywhere All Together Now We Can Work It Out I don't know about you, but it seems like the year is already flying by and Christmas is already a distant memory. The BABC leadership and staff have already put in many hours planning and executing some great events for 2014.

Our fun Burns Night event in February featured some very peculiar 'Scottish' accents that added to the evening's hilarity, offsetting the gravitas of our 'piped' in Haggis dispatched by the dirk of a kilt clad gentleman.

We are already in the throes of planning our 2nd Culinary Gala to benefit Youth in the OC – this year with a nod to the 50th Anniversary of the Beatles arrival in the USA. Our 'Magical Mystery Culinary Tour' will take place May 1st at the Hilton, Anaheim. It will feature several of Orange County's premier chefs, who will tantalize taste buds while Beatles tribute band member Benny Chadwick will enthrall the ears with Beatles tunes – and I dare say there will be a few other fun surprises along the way.

Did you know...

The Beatles song Octopus's Garden was born out of a desire for fish & chips!

The idea for the song came when Ringo Starr was on a boat belonging to comedian Peter Sellers in Sardinia in 1968. He ordered fish and chips for lunch, but instead of fish he got squid (it was the first time he'd eaten squid, and he said, "It was OK. A bit rubbery, tasted like chicken.") Then the boat's captain told Starr about how octopuses travel along the sea bed picking up stones and shiny objects with which to build gardens. The Let It Be film included a scene in which Harrison is shown helping Ringo work the song out on piano.

UK-US Investment News FDI Involving UK Companies, 2012 Net investment flows into the UK (inward investment) increased in 2012 to £35.4 billion (current prices), from £28.9 billion in 2011. However, both of these estimates are well below flows of net investment into the UK seen between 2005 and 2007.

abroad (outward earnings) amounted to £80.2 billion in 2012. This was a decrease of £19.8 billion on the amount earned in 2011 and a return to similar levels seen in 2010. Net earnings from FDI in the UK (inward earnings) decreased slightly in 2012 to £42.7 billion (current prices), a decrease of £1.7 billion on the amount reported in 2011.

The net flow of direct investment abroad by UK companies (outward investment) decreased from £60.1 billion in 2011 to £26.5 billion in 2012, a fall of £33.6 billion.

US Investments into the UK US – UK FDI Key Figures

Net investment flows (outward investment) to Europe declined sharply in 2012 compared with 2011, falling from a net investment of £27.3 billion in 2011 to a net disinvestment of £0.7 billion in 2012.

Most sectors involved in net investment abroad (outward investment) saw a decline in 2012, most notably within the services sector, falling from an investment of £42.2 billion in 2011 to an investment of £0.03 billion in 2012. This decline was mainly in the information and communication, financial services and the electricity, gas, water and waste industries.

The net position of direct investment abroad by UK companies stood at £1,088 billion (£1.1 trillion) by the end of 2012 (current prices). This was similar to levels reported at the end of 2011 and 2008. The net position of direct investment in the UK by overseas companies at the end of 2012 was estimated at £936 billion, an increase on the value reported at the end of 2011 (£793 billion).

US remains leading source of inward FDI stock in the UK with US firms holding 25% of the UK's total stock, representing 200 Billion pounds of UK-based investments.

In 2012/13 the US strengthened its position as the largest foreign investor in the UK with 396 projects, up by 18% year-on-year, and involving almost 50,000 new and safeguarded jobs.

Magical Mystery Culinary Tour

Chef Kyungs' passion for cooking was born in the test kitchen of his high school; he later studied the art of cuisine at Johnson and Wales: College of Culinary Arts in Charleston, S.C. and graduated Magna Cum Laude. After eighteen years of working with top chefs on the East Coast and Southeast Asia (such as Brian McBride, Jeff Buben, Michel Richards and Todd Grey) he started his professional career in the hotel industry in Washington DC earning the titles of Chef De Cuisine, Banquet Chef, Executive Sous Chef and Complex Chef. He was hired by the Anaheim Hilton in 2011, and serves patrons at the hotel's signature 'Mix Restaurant' presenting a farm-to-table fusion of classical French and Nuevo American Cuisine. He also oversees the Hilton Anaheim's vast catering and banquet kitchen that serves more than 2,500 people per meal period.

Cory's first job was at the original Catch in Anaheim, sweeping floors and prepping food.

At age 17 he moved to Sacramento for three years to play goalie for the Sacramento Thunders amateur hockey team and cooked in great restaurants when he wasn't traveling.

After realizing his true passion was cooking he dedicated himself fully to the craft and worked for Sacramento's famed restaurant The Waterboy - working with Rick Mahan a local celebrity chef. Chef Cory also worked for Michelin starred Chef Mark Sullivan at Spruce in San Francisco and he helped friend Chef Justin Simoneaux open a Cajun inspired restaurant The Boxing Room. While he was a Sous Chef for famed Napa Chef Thomas Keller he worked with the Chef creating daily menus inspired by working with a different product every single day. Now back at The Catch, Chef Cory thrives on the challenge of exploring new techniques and methods, and investigating different styles of cooking.

Executive Chef Timothy Plumb graduated from the Culinary Institute of America, New York in 1978 and returned to his home town of Milwaukee, Wisconsin where he learned classically prepared ethnic cuisines. For the past 25 years he has worked in some of the finest restaurants and hotels in the U.S. and has been recognized by the Epicurean Society, The Platter Award, Southern California Restaurant Writers Gold and Sterling Silver Awards and by the Zagat Survey.

At The Summit House, Chef Timothy uses his creative skills to deliciously delight patrons of this highly regarded North Orange County Restaurant. His expertise and experience covers many kinds of foods, and his personal preference leans towards classical presentations.

Chef Timothy's focus is on consistency, taste and eye appeal - three of many reasons that The Summit House patrons become 'regulars'.

Originally from New York, Chef Ben Wallenbeck moved to California in 2009, and worked in several of Orange County's most notable restaurants, including Chapter One: The Modern Local in Santa Ana, and AnQi Gourmet Bistro & Noodle Bar at South Coast Plaza. Now as Chef de Cuisine at Ways & Means, Olde Towne Orange's premiere seafood restaurant and oyster house, Chef Ben heads up the kitchen with Chef de Cuisine Justin Odegard and continues to perfect Ways & Means' signature dishes, with an emphasis on featuring seasonal ingredients and sustainably-caught seafood, while also introducing new items to further enhance the restaurant's menu.

Ron's dad was a Navy chef and his mom a native of Hawaii where island culture embraces food – so I suppose you could say a culinary career was always in his blood.

Educated by a melting pot of cultural experience and also mentored since 2000 by the restaurant's founder and James Beard Award winner Roy Yamaguchi, Chef Plata has presided over the kitchen of Roy's Restaurant Anaheim since its opening and has assisted at other openings nationwide.

European techniques and Asian cuisine meet Hawaiian sensibilities as Chef Ron's creative influence and aloha spirit is celebrated in every dish he creates - whether he is cooking for 2 or 200. Ron's creativity is constantly challenged by his travels and experiences – currently his favorite food items are shiso, yuzu, uni and black garlic, but who knows what tomorrow may bring.

Violence in the Workplace Customer service agents Anyone can be a target of violence in the workplace. OSHA defines workplace violence as, “…any act or threat of physical violence, harassment, intimidation, or other threatening disruptive behavior that occurs at the work site. It ranges from Antoinette Sibley, threats and verbal abuse to Training Development Specialist physical assaults and even Courage Safety Systems, LLC homicide” (OSHA, 2014). Both verbal and physical, workplace violence does not only involve employees, but can also include violence against customers and visitors as well. While homicide is ranked the fourth-leading cause of fatal occupational injuries in the US, it is the leading cause of death for women in the workplace; and of the 4,547 fatal workplace injuries in the US, 506 were workplace homicides (Bureau of Labor Statistics). The statistics are a concern among many employers, especially in an unstable economy, where many employees are left disgruntled after being laid off or let go.

While violence in the workplace can target just about anyone there are certain work tasks that can leave you more vulnerable:Working with money - exchange of money with the public for goods or services Working alone or in an isolated, unlit, or high crime area Care-giving or public service workers Working late at night or early in the morning Delivery drivers Healthcare

Law enforcement To reduce the risk of violence in the workplace, it is advised that employers take a firm stance and initiate a zerotolerance policy against workplace violence of any kind, extending to all employees, clients, and customers. OSHA encourages employers to establish a Workplace Violence Prevention Program, as well as conduct a Risk Assessment of the office environment. Training is also very important, for both employers and employees. Employees should be made aware of what risks there are and how to avoid them when plausible.

Tips to avoid workplace violence: Use the buddy-system when possible (i.e. walking to cars after work, staying late after hours) Report any hazards that may encourage violence (poorly lit areas, broken security cameras, etc.)

Report any suspicious activity or unstable customers/coworkers to your supervisor or Human Resources Carry a cell phone with you When leaving the office, let your supervisor or coworkers know where you are going and when you should return Follow company hiring and firing practices with sensitivity – involve Human Resources as necessary Train all employees on the signs and symptoms of workplace violence Check workplace security measures routinely (i.e. alarms, locks, security lights, etc.)

Death to the mobile website and long live the responsive website you wouldn't normally find on a regular website and large one directional drop downs for easier clicking.

2007 was the year that Apple dropped the iPhone on the market and changed the way we all use mobile phones to view websites forever. Introducing a bigger screen to the market, gave website developers the challenge how to create websites that would adapt to a Sven Johnston smartphone. We could either create a website that was mobile friendly and didn't use flash or if the client had the extra room in their budget, create a separate mobile website (m.companyname.com) with its own domain.

Rhythm Interactive Banks Six ADDY Awards

Congratulations to BABC OC member Rhythm Interactive (a digital marketing agency) who was recently awarded with six ADDY Awards recognizing the agency's focus on sophisticated strategy, interaction design and elegant technology.

More than 350 Orange County creative professionals attended the OC Addy Awards presented by the AAF OC on February 27, 2014 at the Irvine Marriott. The ADDY Awards are the largest and most prestigious creative competition in the industry - honoring creative excellence in nearly every area of advertising and marketing from traditional forms to more interactive, digital forms.

Creating a separate mobile website was the chosen path for clients with bigger budgets. A completely separate website would be created that was viewed only on smart phones, therefore allowing you to only display the necessary information needed with big fonts and buttons. Although the mobile website was a much better user experience, the person controlling the website had the challenge of managing separate websites.

Thinking that the introduction of the iPhone was not enough Apple decided to launch the iPad in 2010, launching the adoption of tablets. To add to these matters, in 2013 Google finally announced that an m.companywebsite.com would be treated as duplicate content. As a result of this change you will be penalized and it will hurt your organic SEO (Search Engine Optimization) rankings.

Today we are have so many form factors from a phone, varying tablet sizes, laptops, and the home user with a 27� plus monitor. With so many different screen sizes, industry changes, and user experiences the developer community had to adopt and introduced the concept of a responsive designed website.

So what is responsive design? It is literally designing 3 different styles of websites in one and depending on what device you view it on, you will get the best user experience. All the content will be handled through one Content Management System (CMS), Wordpress for example, and the person managing the website will have a much easier life. Any new website launched in the past 18 – 24 months should already be responsive and if yours is not, then you are due for a new one. With mobile traffic growing at astounding rates you don't want to be left behind.
