When I walked through those large, wooden front doors and entered the Mesa Verde Country Club for the first time as a member, I thought I had arrived. I was 34 years old, had only been to country clubs a few times before, and thought they were hallowed ground for the very elite. I still enjoy the feeling every time I walk through the doors and enter the clubhouse, but a lot has changed since 1983, which I will get to later. I was a working stiff when I joined; was lucky enough to have a good job and had a wife who had a great job. She was a Partner at a large consulting firm that provided country club memberships to their partners, all of whom were men, except Mrs. Goulette. When she approached them about joining a club, they said they would pay 50% of the initiation fee; not the normal 100% they did for the men partners. We thought it was still special that we would be able to join a private country club, so we went ahead with it – no questions asked. For many years, Mesa Verde was a weekend golf retreat for me. Due to work, I was rarely able to get there during the week. But it served my purpose – beautiful surroundings, great golf course, nice people; a place to get away and have fun. As my jobs changed, I started using the Club during the week for client/staff outings; and while I still was proud of all aspects of it, I began to see services that were inconsistent, clubhouse details that were not being maintained, trees that were not being cared for – I just became more aware of my surroundings. I think the first time I started to think about the “club experience” differently was during the buildup to the clubhouse teardown and rebuild – sometime starting around the year 2000. That was a very contentious time around the club; there were strong factions on both sides – 1. The clubhouse absolutely needed to be replaced; 2. All we need to do is fix the things that are in disrepair and paint it. As many of you know, the vote to replace the clubhouse passed by about 1 vote; so, the contentiousness did not dissipate any time soon. I began to get involved in governance as I met Board members and started to express my concerns and desire to help build a better club. Fast forward to 2013: I was elected to the Board of Directors; something I never even thought about 30 years ago when I first walked through those front doors. I went to my first Board meeting, not knowing what to expect and started viewing the Club in a completely different light. As the old saying goes: I like eating sausage, but I am not sure I want to see how the sausage is made. Well, being on the Board enables you to see how the sausage is made and have some influence over the process. Being on the Board the past 3 years has been one of the best experiences of my life. We have accomplished a lot, as you will hear about in the Annual Meeting; we have helped navigate the Club on a path toward sustainability and financial strength; and I have made many new friends. Thanks to all the Board members with which I have served for helping to make it productive and enjoyable. Thanks to the Management team for being so hard working and dedicated; and being fun to work with. Thanks to the rest of my fellow Members for being supportive. And thanks to my wife, Suzanne, (I remarried 32 years ago) for her patience and support. Onward and Upward, Roger Goulette, President The Connection |

RANDY MYERS HEAD TENNIS PROFESSIONAL

Beginning Thursday, November 9 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Will run for 6 weeks. Price: $72 members & $102 guests. For the 6 week session.

Happy Thanksgiving! Happy Thanksgiving Mesa Verde! There is so much in my own personal life that I am thankful for. I am sure that many of you reading this can say the same thing. In this crazy world of so much going on around us, it is healthy to pause and reflect on just how much we have been given. When we do that, we begin to cultivate a thankful grateful attitude toward everyone around us and a result, joy begins to overflow naturally from within. I know that this is a newsletter that is supposed to be directed at tennis, however I hope you will allow me some grace in reminding all of us that everything we have in life should never be taken for granted and we should understand that today is all we have. A pastor friend frequently reminds me that life is like having an open hand or a closed hand. With a closed hand you cannot give or receive, but with having an open hand you are able to do both! Let’s approach this Thanksgiving Season with open hands and grateful hearts. Thanks, Randy
