NOVEMBER 2017

THE PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE — Steve Callaway, President We have our Annual Meeting on Saturday morning November 11th. This will be followed by the President’s Cup. This is an opportunity for members to hear a recap on the Club’s progress over the past year, the Board’s plans for the future, and to ask questions of the Board. This meeting is followed by the President’s Cup tournament. Please let the Club Office know if you are coming to the Annual Meeting and sign up with the Pro Shop for the golf tournament. In October, we held the 18 Holers’ Beat the President Tournament. We had great participation. Three ladies dominated and Beat the President. Congratulations to Adrienne Kohler, Ellie Ross and Luisa Farquhar on their fine rounds. This is the final edition of the President’s Message for my term as President. Reflecting on the year, our Board is proud of the new management structure established. There are high expectations for our new managers: Bryan Richardson, Sally Otsuka, Armando Sanchez and Javier Ortiz. They join our existing managers Carla Hunt, Debbi Wilson, Santos Mejia, Mike Jacinto and Brandon Huneke. We expect our new management team will create a club with service and amenities all members and guests will proudly enjoy. We had many committee members contribute to Sequoyah’s success this past year. This includes members of the House, Greens, Golf Activities, Finance, Entertainment and Membership Com-

mittees. There are also the formal golf organization members like the Niners, 18 Holers, Seniors and Invitational Committee. Sequoyah thrives because of member-driven events, ideas and contributions. Thank you goes out to every member who donated time and effort during the past year to make our club better. A special “thank you” to every member involved in the membership development efforts in the past few years. We have a record number of new members joining Sequoyah. Bob Bodman led the effort as our Membership Director. But the success of membership development could only happen with your efforts as recruiters, ambassadors, interviewers and cheerleaders. The members and the Club comradery are unique to Sequoyah CC. The feeling of welcome is what makes our club special. Thank you to the directors for your contributions this year. We must have set a

record for conference calls, emergency meetings and executive meetings. Each of you made Board work a priority and a significant personal time commitment. This includes Recording Secretary Robin Nelson and Past President Dave Cannon. The directors are Peter Scott, David Stein, Mike Stearns, Don Steffen, Jerry Bajada, Marc Cunningham, Steve Hart, and Bob Wright. Thank you. Peter Scott finishes a four-year commitment of service to Sequoyah. Peter was recording secretary in 2013 – 14. He then contributed three years as a director. During this time, Peter chaired the House Committee and Greens Committee. He was always the first to come to the Club to sign a needed check, worked tirelessly on clubhouse redesign, and completed the Pro Shop refurbishing. This past year, he was on the Executive Committee as Club Secretary. If you see Peter, please thank Mr. Scott for his significant contribution to Sequoyah.

NINER NEWS — Molly Natsues, Secretary WNGGA TOC at Valley Hi October was full of group events, tournaments and exciting news! On October 5th, our TOC winners — Lisa Bajada, Nancy Levey, Manna Liu and Susan Fox participated in the WNHGA TOC Championships held at Valley Hi Country Club in Elk Grove. Each participant competed against the TOC winners from all the WNHGA Clubs (35 – 40 in each flight). The weather was beautiful, and the course was challenging with water on every hole except two on the back nine. We had two big winners that day and congratulations to Nancy and Susan! Nancy won 5th place overall for 1st Flight and was actually in a three-

WOMEN’S GOLF — Emily Gorin, Captain Match Play Tournament – October 10 You’ve heard the expression, "mano a mano" to describe an intense competition or duel between two competitors? Well, we were "womano a womano" in a match play tournament! Nothing like match play to test wits, skill, and will to win! The following women were victorious: • Noel Murray • Mirna Wong

• Dee Dee Appleton • Emily Gorin

Elisabeth Fredricsson and Ellie Ross were tied after 18, and in the spirit of extreme diplomacy, and being very ready for a most fabulous lunch buffet waiting in the Sequoyah Room, they decided to call it a draw.

4 Clubs and a Putter The funny thing about this tournament is that many players are shocked to learn

that they score just about the same with 4-clubs as they do with 14! For these ladies, that was especially true: Overall Winner — Sharon Valerio, net 73 1st place 2nd place 3rd place

Beat the Club President The ladies love our Club President, Steve Callaway, but that doesn’t mean we didn’t fully intend to beat the pants off of him (metaphorically, of course) in a friendly tournament. Well, that was easier said than done, as Steve must have put in hours of practice, and taken lots of lessons getting ready for our Beat the Club President tournament. We, on the other hand, had lots of excuses — it was weirdly hot and windy, the greens had

PRO SHOP NEWS — By Brandon Huneke, PGA Professional Men's Club Championship Sunday, October 1st, concluded the 2017 Men’s Club Championship. The Championship Flight (Gross) consisted of 15 players who qualified for the event in September and the 2016 Club Cham-

pion, Andy Temple. The 1st and 2nd Flights (Net) had eight players in each bracket. In the 1st Flight, Ces Butner made his way through the bracket defeating Graham Rickard, John Colon and met Andrew Zacks in the Finals who he beat 4&2. John Gourhan won the 2nd Flight by defeating Stuart Gruendl, Bart Goldie and Marc Cunningham in the final match 2&1. Congratulations on maneuvering your way through your brackets to claim the win in your flights!

(L to R): Pro Brandon Huneke, Men's Club Champ Andy Temple and General Manager Bryan Richardson.

4 NOVEMBER 2017

Our 2017 Men’s Club Champion came from the 16-player Championship Flight.

Let me start off by saying this: It was a pleasure to watch this match between the #1 and #2 seeds and was the first time I can recall the match making it all the way to the 36th hole! Andy Temple, the #2 seed (automatically qualified due to winning the 2016 Championship), went head-to-head with Jason Cox, the medalist of the Championship Qualifier. These are two of the best players in the Club, and you are about to learn why. Andy had a great start making par on the 1st hole then following it up with a birdie on #2 and #3 to go 3-up right out of the gate. Both players proceeded to par #4 and #5. Jason played consistently making birdie on #6 and pars on #7 and #8. With Andy faltering on 6 and 8, Jason was only 1-down, but Andy birdied #9 to finish the front 2-up and one under par. The back 9 had the same quality of play and was just as tight. Jason had a birdie on #13, a bogey on Continued on Page FIVE

WOMEN’S GOLF – Continued from Page THREE just been punched and sanded, and the fairways were littered with plugs. Nineteen women tried, but only three were successful at beating Steve’s net score of 75, and one tied him. Luisa Farquhar Ellie Ross Adrienne Kohler Sharon Valerio

After the tournament, we enjoyed lunch and thanked Steve for being such a good sport. All kidding aside, we truly have appreciated Steve’s leadership over the past year, and his willingness to listen to the thoughts, ideas, and concerns of the 18-holers. Beat the Club participants with Steve peeking out in the back row.

#14 and par’d the rest while Andy also birdied #13, but had three bogeys. After 18 holes, the match was all even with Jason firing a 71 and Andy a 72! The players took a 20-minute break prior to continuing, and while they did, the winds picked up. Jason found some bad luck and inconsistency on their second time around the front 9 with five bogeys and four pars. Andy fared better with three bogeys and a birdie to sit at 2-up after the front 9. Jason found another bogey on #10 losing to Andy’s par, and Andy gave it right back on #11 with a bogey. Both players found their groove and par’d #12 – #16 with Andy dormie with two to play. On #17, Jason hit a fantastic tee shot to within 15 feet of the upper right pin. Andy, unfortunately, left it in the front right bunker and was unable to get up & down. The match was still alive going into their 36th hole! Jason piped a drive down #18 and ended up in the left rough just under 200 yards from the green and Andy found himself in the trees to the right having to punch out to about 125 out. Jason hit a great shot that landed just in front of the pin

(back location) but bounced about 5 yards over the back edge. Andy took a wedge and stuck it to 10 feet. Jason hit a good chip to about 8 feet. At this point, Andy would need to 2-putt and Jason to make for the match to continue. Andy lined up his putt, took his stance, and DRAINED IT for birdie to win 2-up! Both finalists played very well and deserve recognition for battling their way through the bracket and putting on a very exciting Championship Match! Andy, congratulations on winning your third Men’s Club Championship in a row – it was well deserved!!!

Great Shots October – the month of Steve! On October 4th, Steve Hart hit two perfect shots followed by another by holing out his pitching wedge for EAGLE! Way to go, Steve! To wrap up the month, on October 25th, Steve Smith knocked in a 9-iron tee shot on #5 for his seventh Hole-in-One! That is seven more than the number that General Manager Bryan Richardson, your President Steve Callaway, and I have combined! Congrats, Steve!

Sequoyah CC Junior Merit Program Since its introduction in 2009, the primary function of the Junior Merit Program is for further development and advancement of junior golf in the local area by offering a limited number of non-club members, who might otherwise not have such an opportunity to advance their golf and life skills. This program is dedicated to juniors between the ages of 14 and 26. A total of six Junior Merit scholarships will be awarded at the beginning of every year for a one-year term to aspiring golfers that do not have access to a quality golf facility. Your Golf Activities Committee will be reviewing applications for 2018 membership in the end of December based on the following criteria: • Quality of application • Locale • Golf skill • Access to other facilities • Financial considerations If you know any juniors that may qualify for and benefit from this program, please email me or stop by my office to discuss.

FROST DELAY POLICIES — By Brandon Huneke, PGA Professional Now that we have aeration out of the way, I can feel the season changing. With winter and colder weather knocking at our door, frost delays will be possible. Please read below for details regarding frost damage and the policy in effect at SCC.

prevent needless repairs. Please be patient during frost delays as they allow the greens to remain healthy.

Frost Delay Policy

Walking on frost-covered greens causes the plant to break and cell walls to rupture, thereby losing its ability to function normally. When damaged, the putting surface weakens and becomes more susceptible to disease and weeds. One foursome can leave several hundred footprints on each green, causing extensive damage.

Any day when there is normal play with a frost delay, the golf shop will create a list that will determine the order of play. To reserve a spot on the list, at least one member from each foursome must be present at the golf shop. NO PHONE CALLS will be allowed to reserve a spot on the list — just like any other day, tee times are allotted on a first-come-firstserved basis. We will announce an approximate time in the email in which the frost will clear; sometimes the frost will clear earlier than anticipated. It is a good idea for all members of the foursome to be present at the golf course at least 15 minutes before their tee-time. If all members of your group are not present when your turn arrives, you may either tee off without them and have them catch up, or wait and lose your spot in the line-up (we will do our best to work you back in).

A short delay while the frost melts can preserve the quality of the greens and

On Sundays and holidays when there is a frost delay, members are allowed to

Frost Delay Education Throughout winter and early spring, we will occasionally experience frost on the golf course which will in turn push back starting tee times. When frost is present, golf course superintendents delay play until the frost has melted. This is done to prevent damage that affects the quality of the playing surface and could potentially be very expensive to repair.

reserve tee times and may call in and reserve whatever tee time we have available. Keep in mind that the tee time you reserve will be pushed back. How far it is pushed back will depend on the time the frost thaws and the number of groups scheduled to tee off before you. In the event of a frost delay on a tournament day, the tournament will take priority and tee off when the frost clears. All non-tournament play will be pushed back and follow the tournament field. In either case, we request your patience during frost delays. The staff will put forth its best effort to accommodate you and streamline the process of teeing off to minimize the wait time for the rest of the players. You are probably asking yourself, “Why doesn’t the Golf Staff tee groups off of #1 & #10 or have a modified shotgun on holes 1, 2, 3, & 4?” Unfortunately, the back-9 of the course tends to take about an hour longer to thaw out than the front-9, and holes 3 & 4 take about 20-30 minutes longer to thaw out than holes 1 & 2. During frost delays, we will be restricted to sending groups solely off of #1.

TENNIS NEWS — Bill Patton, Tennis Pro Throw on an extra layer and come out for some late fall tennis. With Daylight Savings approaching, there are still opportunities for late afternoon play and lessons. The Friday afternoon hitting sessions have ended until spring, but suggest another time for drop-in play and we can try to make it work. Keep in mind, most of the lessons are taught on Saturday mornings and Sunday afternoons, with some midday lessons thrown in there midweek. Steve Douglas and Carlos Blythe are playing USTA Flex League, it’s a great way to get yourself programmed for play. “It really forces you to stay in the groove,” says Carlos. By the time you read this, a new system will be in place for reserving courts. Court 3 can be reserved seven days in advance and up until 24 hours prior to court time. Court 4 is the teaching court dedicated to lessons to help members improve their game. When Court 4 is not being used for a lesson, members may use it on a first-come-firstserved basis. Please limit your play to one hour for singles, and 90 minutes for doubles. Until construction begins on the pickle ball courts, Court 1 is playable, and we do not recommend playing on Court 2. The best way to reserve your court is to call Bill at (510) 909-3662. Once we have a clear picture about the completion of the pickle ball courts, we will plan a major pickle ball launch. We are already boning up on pickle ball rules and technique. Even so, we will invite a pickle ball guru for the launch.
