We are extremely pleased to announce the selection of our new Head Golf Professional, Heidi Wright-Tennyson. Heidi is a highly-recognized and decorated Director of Golf at Moss Creek Golf Club, Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, where she has served in various capacities since 1994. She was awarded the distinguished titles of 2015 Carolinas PGA Section Golf Professional of the Year; the 2013 Carolinas PGA Section Player Development Award, and a variety of other prestigious awards for her teaching, coaching, fitting, and mentoring. Our retiring head professional, Tom Sargent, when asked about his conversations and interactions with Heidi, said, “She is an extremely impressive golf professional.” Heidi is incredibly passionate about the game of golf and all aspects surrounding the game. We are most fortunate that she has agreed to share her passion and knowledge and join us at Mesa Verde Country Club. Based on her outstanding record of accomplishments, accolades from industry leaders and members, and her fervor for building strong relationships with club members as well as club staff, we are confident that she will carry forward our strong tradition of golf at Mesa Verde. The selection process was an extremely thorough and exhaustive process which began with over 35 golf professionals who applied for the position. We narrowed the field to seven candidates whom we interviewed, from which we selected two outstanding finalists. These two finalists were brought to the club on separate days for meetings with key senior staff. Each conducted a teaching clinic for the search committee, played several holes of golf with the committee members, then presented to the committee their 30/60/90-day plans, after which each candidate, along with their spouse, joined the committee for a cocktail reception. After considerable discussion focusing on the key requirements for the Mesa Verde Country Club Golf Head Professional, and considering the criteria we established for selection, the committee approved Heidi as the preferred candidate. We reviewed the process and the selection decision with the Board of Directors who support this decision. Please join us in welcoming Heidi and her husband, Roger, to the Mesa Verde Country Club family. We are working on an exact start date, but anticipate it will be in February 2018. The Connection |

GOLF ANNOUNCEMENTS

SHORT SHOTS Every December there are a couple of things I like to address. First, I like to take time to recognize our champions – those who have achieved the pinnacles of play in their golf world. It really isn’t easy to win a championship of any nature. In fact, it’s a grind. We all feel the tension during competition. Heck, it’s part of the rush. One could say that it’s not the same as it is to the tour player who is in the hunt for a win or a major title. I’m not so sure about that. While I can’t say I’ve had the thrill of being in contention to win a tournament in the pantheon of golf ’s highest tier, however, I have been fortunate enough to get into the “hunt” in quite a few tournaments at the minitour level, in PGA Section tournaments and other events around the country over the years. I’ve managed to come from behind to win and to come from ahead to lose. I have a pretty good sense of both the highs and the lows. In every one of them I felt pressure. I can’t compare it to the pressure of a PGA Tour event because one doesn’t know what one doesn’t know. However, I’ve experienced the endorphin rush exiting the last green as if literally walking on clouds. I’ve also experienced the misery of the “choke” or what might, at least, be perceived as a choke (it certainly was in my mind!). So I have a tremendous amount of respect for those who manage to win the highest honors in their own golf world. As I said, it’s just not that easy. Sometimes there is someone who we all assume is going to win. However, if that was the case, why doesn’t he or she always win? Because it just ain’t that easy. So here is my annual salute to those who have climbed Mesa Verde’s highest hill tops! Kim Izzi claimed her first women’s Club Championship wresting the title away from Madelaine Campbell, our eight-time champ. Kim is one of those we all assumed had the talent to reach the top. She played professionally for several years before putting down her clubs and picking up motherhood. Took her a little while to get back and even then she’d be the first to admit that she was pretty nervous throughout the tournament. That “can’t miss” battle flag is a tough one to carry. Mitch Allenspach came next when he claimed the Senior

Club Championship for the second year in a row. Mitch has a pretty good resume of his own having laid claim to two Ohio State Junior Championships in his youth. There is only one other player who can make that claim. None other than Jack Nicklaus. However, Mitch will tell you it didn’t come easy and, of course, he’s such a gentleman that he wouldn’t tell you that it did even if it did out of respect for his fellow competitors. Greg Selmanson claimed the net title by a single stroke so we know his nerves were a bit jangled. In the Super Senior Club Championship, Steve Rhorer took home the honors. Steve is one of those fellows we all expect to be in the hunt. While he has certainly earned his share of championships (four MVCC Championships, six MVCC Senior Club Championships, five Scratch Match Play Championships, three Super Senior Club Championships, not to mention eleven Club Championships at Virginia CC plus another at The Hideaway – hope I got them all but probably not) he will tell you none of them have come without the attending bout of nerves. As for the team competitions, how about Michael Kelso and Steve Schwartz who took home their second MemberMember Team Championship trophies this year. You can’t tell me they weren’t battling to overcome the nerves. Steve would still be amped if you unplugged him and let his battery run down. I know he battles his nerves! Don Reino captured what is essentially the club’s match play championship, the President’s Cup. Quite an accomplishment because it means he never lost through six or seven rounds over the period of almost nine months. Now that’s a grind! Speaking of grinds, Mike Tatum and Eric Oakley won the Al Wells Four-Ball Match Play Championship earlier this fall. Those matches lasted over six months also. The Al Wells is pretty much what you all play every day – partners best ball match play. So it’s a hefty title to carry around. More for our women champs, Marion Wilson and Linda Patton captured the WGA President’s Cup, a partners fourball match play tournament. Izumi Sueoka and Kim Izzi won the three-day Partners Net Championship. So congrats to our champs once again. They deserve it. And the beauty of being a champion is that once achieved, it’s forever. They get introduced to guests and new members as “This is…..he/she is a Club Champion or President’s Cup Champ.” And guess what! The cycle is about to start all over again. The President’s Cup kicks off a month early. It may be 2018’s President’s Cup but it’s going to start in December this year. The start date will be December 5th. This is due to the construction project which commences in April next


spring. There were 136 players in last year’s President’s Cup. It’s second only to the Al Wells in the number of members participating.

A FROST DELAY IS NOBODY’S FRIEND!

I mentioned two things. The first was about competition. The second is, on behalf of the entire Golf Operations crew, to wish you all the happiest of holidays and New Year. Make 2018 your best golf year yet!

It’s that time of year again where the dreaded frost delays are inevitable. Believe me when I say that Turf Maintenance dislikes frost delays as much as any golfer does. We gain absolutely nothing from enforcing a frost delay other than protecting your golf course.

So sign up. Who knows, maybe 2018 will be the year you end up carving your name in one of the club’s perpetual plaques. At the very least you’ll get to experience a little bit of those tournament butterflies. You may even get to like them. There is only one way to get them and that’s to step up to the plate in one of our club tournaments when you…………………… Golf Your Ball, Tom

PRESIDENT’S CUP TO START EARLY: DECEMBER 5TH The Golf Committee has approved a December 5th start for the annual President’s Cup. Because of the on-course project, which is scheduled to start April 23, it is felt that this will allow more matches to be played while the course is in top condition. Sign ups may be done online through ForeTees, by phone or in person in the Golf Shop. Last year we had 136 players sign up, a record turnout. That equates to eight match play rounds. The field will be split into four flights based on handicaps. The winners of each flight will end up in the semi-semi finals with the ultimate winner becoming the President’s Cup Champion. The tournament is open to all members who participate in the annual Tournament Account. Don Reino is the defending 2017 Champion. Match date deadlines will be as follows: Round Start Done by 1 12/5 1/7 2 1/8 2/5 3 2/6 4/1 4 4/2 4/22 5 5/1 6/3 6 6/4 7/1 7 7/2 7/29 8 (if needed) 7/30 8/26 Note: The Committee, at its sole discretion, reserves the right to adjust the completion dates depending on course condition.

During frost delays the Turf Department loses valuable time on the golf course as we are unable to begin work until the frost lifts, the golf course takes a hit aesthetically, and perhaps the most difficult aspect of a frost delay is predicting when it is safe for the first tee time to go off. We always try our best to get you this information as quickly as possible. Unfortunately, it is difficult to gauge how significant a frost event will be in the dark hours of the morning. In fact, the coldest part of the morning is typically just after the sun begins to rise which for much of the winter is right before the first scheduled tee time. We understand your frustration when you show up in the morning only to find out there is a frost delay. Communication is key during the months where frost is a possibility. The Course Status Hotline is available to call daily to check on any potential delays, closures or restrictions. We also post the potential for frost each day in the daily update and on foretees. When frost is highly likely we send out an email blast the prior evening. In addition, we have our own personal weather station, located between the 5th and 8th holes, that you can access by downloading an app. The app is called WeatherLink. Simply download the Weatherlink app, type in Costa Mesa (a list of weather stations will appear), select MVCC-WS1. This will provide you a live feed from our weather station. Our weather station is one of the tools we use to predict the development of frost. I will explain how you can use it as well. There are two TEMP readings on the weather station. TEMP and TEMP2. TEMP is the ambient temperature and TEMP2 is the ground temperature. TEMP2 is the key to projecting the potential for frost. When I wake up on winter mornings I immediately check TEMP2 on my Weatherlink app. When I see that TEMP2 is at 40 degrees at 4:45 am I know there is a possibility of frost. If I see 39 or below frost development is almost certain. I know, frost doesn’t form unless the ground temperature is 32 degrees or below. Keep in mind our weather station is only reading the temperature in one area of the golf course. There are many other locations on the golf course that get colder than where our weather station sits. During a frost delay I ask that you keep in mind we are simply doing what is necessary to protect your golf course. Have a great winter and we’ll see you out there! Bob Gluck Course Superintendent

FROM THE RED TEES BY KRISTINE MORRIS Happy Holidays!! As this year comes to a close, I would like to thank all WGA Board members, committee chairs and volunteers. You have worked hard and given much of your time and effort to make our events successful. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! And thanks to those volunteers who accepted positions on our 2018 Board. Voting for our 2018 Board officers took place at our Meeting Day in November. The new Board will be installed in December and they are: President – Kristine Morris, Vice-President – Margaret Torley, Secretary – Suzy Bunnell, Treasurer – Rochelle Wiktorski, Handicap – Diane Williamson, Major Tournaments – Marion Wilson, Sweeps – Cristina Perez. Our annual Charity event took place in October. The recipient of our efforts was Breast Cancer Solutions, an Orange County organization. $6,136.00 was raised through donations, the selling of “miracle putts” on meeting day and our silent auction. A big “Thank You” to all who donated the silent auction items and for those who helped me with this event – Judy Lukin, Cara Campeau, Betty Rothman, Sally Holstein, Natalie King and Diane Williamson.

UPCOMING GOLF EVENTS: December Meeting Day and Installation of Officers will be on Tuesday, December 5th. We will have an 8:30 shot-gun start for golf. Come celebrate the Holidays with us – sign up in the Ladies Lounge, on ForeTees or in the Pro Shop. Christmas Guest Day will be on Tuesday, December 12th and will be an 8:30 am shot gun start. “Pumpkins and Pineapples” was the theme for our Mini Member-Guest Tournament on October 31st. Arlene Peterson chaired this successful event. With the help of her committee, Halloween decorations greeted us in the Ladies Lounge, fresh pineapples were our tee markers and the luncheon tables were quite festive and decorated with “pumpkins and pineapples.” There were 18 four person teams divided into two flights and the format was 2 Best Ball, gross and net. MEET THE NEW MVCC BOARD OF DIRECTORS 2017-2018 Over the past year, Mesa Verde C.C. has made huge strides in improving our membership, events and long-term initiatives to continue increasing our club’s notoriety across Orange County and Southern California. As we head into 2018 with many exciting and new changes coming, we thought it might be nice to meet your Board of Directors, as you’ve voted them in to represent your interests. Each board member has brought a fresh perspective to the table, and we are extremely grateful for their energy and commitment. We recently asked them to reflect on their involvement with Mesa Verde Country Club. Paul Lunsford Club President

What year did you join the Club? 2007, January as I recall. Why did you decide to join the Board? I really want to help make a difference to the Club and continue the upward trajectory of being known as a great Club. What do you want to accomplish as a board member in 2018? Let’s get the Clubhouse and Golf course renovations completed on time and within budget. What are your favorite things about being a part of MVCC? I have two favorites, the Golf course and the Members!

What year did you join the Club? I joined in 2006

Why did you decide to join the Board? I actually had very little initial interest in joining the Board but came to the realization that the pleasure I derive from my time spent at Mesa Verde has come in great part at the expense of those members before me that selflessly gave their time to make the club the great place it is today. Understanding that prompted me to try and give something back in the way of time and effort with the sincere desire to help further our mutual goal of making the club the best it can be. What do you want to accomplish as a board member in 2018? This year promises to be an action packed one to be sure: We are renovating the club house, redoing parts of the golf course and welcoming in a new head golf professional at the same time. My goal is to do my part to help bring all of these projects to fruition in the best way possible for the members and the club! What are your favorite things about being a part of MVCC? My favorite things about Mesa Verde include the great golf course that I find to be the best in Orange County, the wonderful people I’ve met here over the years, the groups and games that I am privileged to be a part of, and of course “the action” $ :)

What year did you join the Club? 1997 Why did you decide to join the Board? After 20 years as a member I felt it was my turn to assist in setting a direction for the club. What do you want to accomplish as a board member in 2018? With the assistance of the management team and finance committee I’d like to help the club effectively execute on the master plan projects and general operations in a cost-effective way. With the recent signing of a financially attractive and flexible bank credit facility we have taken the first step toward that goal. What are your favorite things about being a part of MVCC? The casual and unpretentious culture and the great friends my wife Cristina and I have made. And of course, our wonderful golf course....

Why did you decide to join the Board? Over the last 10 years I’ve served and chaired several committees. The next step was to join the board. MVCC is a big reason I stayed living in SoCal, so just wanted to give something back.

Why did you decide to join the Board? To give back to the club for all the years of great times we have enjoyed being members.

What do you want to accomplish as a board member in 2018? See through the projects we have been working on the last few years. Clubhouse/course changes etc. and to help in anyway I can with the transition of a new head pro. What are your favorite things about being a part of MVCC? Two things - first the membership and my friends I’ve made here over the years. Second- the gold course.

What do you want to accomplish as a board member in 2018? To see that the club improvements get handled and we all get to enjoy them as soon as possible. What are your favorite things about being a part of MVCC? The members and families we continue to meet. The staff that always makes you feel welcomed and the food that is outstanding. Also, the social events that are always like a party on steroids!

What year did you join the Club? 2005 Why did you decide to join the Board? To do my part in helping with club governance. What do you want to accomplish as a board member in 2018? To get our approved projects off to a timely start, keep them within budget, and get them finished within the desired timelines. What are your favorite things about being a part of MVCC? The friendly, family oriented atmosphere. We have many friends here at the club.

DID YOU KNOW MESA VERDE C.C. OFFERS A MEMBER REFERRAL PROGRAM? A Member who refers an applicant that is successfully approved for Membership, shall receive a monthly credit on their statement for 12 months. This credit is $150 for Golf Membership and $40 for a Social. In addition, Golf Members shall also receive 5 complementary rounds of golf for your guests to enjoy! This is our way of saying thank you for welcoming new Members to the Mesa Verde Country Club family. Introduce your Prospective Member by inviting them to our MVCC Prospective Member Cocktail Party. Why did you decide to join the Board? We are members of a collective that works best when people contribute their time and attention for the common good. It felt like it was my time to contribute a little more. What do you want to accomplish as a board member in 2018? They say that some of the most stressful events in one’s life are changing jobs, getting married and remodeling your house. With Tom’s retirement, our new Head Pro joining us and the golf course and clubhouse projects over the next year or so, the membership of MVCC will be going through the country club equivalent of those life events. As a Board member, my primary goal will be to help our staff and membership “Keep Calm and Carry On” during this time period. I’m confident that we will be an even better Club at the conclusion of it. What are your favorite things about being a part of MVCC? I think the golf course is one of the top two or three courses in Orange County. I really enjoy our down-to-earth members and cheerful staff.

The staff is still encountering many members and their guests wearing hoodies, sweatshirts and t-shirts. Please remember that anything with a hood, shirts without a collar, sports jerseys and attire such as shirts and jackets with expressions or slogans are listed as unacceptable. Golf shirts must be worn tucked in. This applies to males and females six years and older. The staff may have to ask members to retrieve the appropriate clothing before serving them.
