The Club’s financial performance continues to be very strong.

We are almost halfway through our fiscal year and all areas of the Club are ahead of budget and we continue to generate positive cash flow every month.

Our energized membership efforts are producing results.

Members are our best source of recruiting new members and the Partner Program that was launched 60 days ago is producing solid results. Year to date we have recruited 15 new members compared to 6 during this same period in 2011. Special thanks to Jessica Bex and the Membership Committee for their efforts.

We are entering the “prime time” for new member activity so our work is not finished. Please give special attention to the Partner Program supplemental information that Jessica will be forwarding to the Membership.

The Board is committed to protecting our Club.

As I reported 60 days ago, incidents of theft have been on the rise at Meridian Hills over the past few years. The Board committed to take action and determine the appropriate solution by balancing security effectiveness, member convenience and cost. We created a safety committee, consulted with the local police department and hired two separate security experts to produce an assessment of our situation. Based on the unanimous findings of both companies, the Board has approved the installation of 16 high definition security cameras that will provide 24 hour coverage for both the exterior and interior of the club. Every car entering and leaving the club will be digitally recorded and prominent signage will also be used as a deterrent. The installation will begin soon and the security committee and Board will continue to closely monitor the situation.

Wow…the Committee on Green has been working hard.

With the leadership of Kurt Spitler and Jim Hess, the Committee on Green has created the first ever Meridian Hills Golf Course Standards, Maintenance & Course Set Up document.

We are committed to having best in class course conditions at Meridian Hills. After hundreds of hours of work, we now have a written guide that defines and prioritizes the expectations for our golf course. Frequent communication on the course conditions with the Membership will be an area of increased focus this year. At your convenience, please review the document which is available on our website or in the Pro Shop.

We have an action packed Social Calendar.

The golf course is already in excellent condition, the tennis courts will open soon and before you know it the pool will be freshly painted and filled. Fiesta and Bingo Nights were huge hits last month so please consider checking out these new monthly events. Now would be a great time to pull out the social calendar for the month and call some friends and commit to a few activities. Finally, please make sure you reserve Saturday, May 5th to attend the all adult ‘Spring Fling’ a Cinco de Mayo celebration.

Message from the Manager

For the five month period into this fiscal year, the Club is better than budget due to strong Food and Beverage revenues, new membership activity and good expense controls throughout the operation. As we prepare for an early spring and “high season,” the staff is rethinking and managers retraining their respective departments, in order to serve you better. Twenty one managers and support staff have been recently certified or re-certified in CPR/ AED in order to have adequate coverage during operation hours for medical emergencies.

We are also making plans for some additional children’s General Manager programs during the summer months - more to come! We have a full calendar of wedding and banquets which will make a strong impact to our Food and Beverage department budget, and as a result, strengthen our bottom line.

The Greens Committee has been working diligently over the winter with Superintendent Jim Hess, to develop a “MHCC Golf Course Standards, Maintenance & Course Set Up” document, which will be a road map of procedures to the MHCC course maintenance guidelines. This document, approved by the Board of Directors, is now posted on the Club’s website, www.meridianhillscc.org. We urge you to look over this document. Better communication from the Greens Committee and Jim as to course condition and projects will be posted outside the pro shop, on the website and in the newsletter. Should you have any questions or suggestions concerning the golf course, these should be directed to the Greens Committee: Chairman-Kurt Spitler, Board LiaisonHaydon Hapak. Membership Update & Upcoming Events Spring is in full bloom in Indianapolis and, while I have to wonder what the repercussions will be of essentially skipping a season, I am thoroughly enjoying the fragrant beauty all around.

Also in full bloom is our Membership Partner Program.

Thanks to those of you who have participated in our Partner Program, we have welcomed 13 new members since it was launched on February 1st and we are expecting several more in the next few weeks. I would like to extend a sincere thank you from the Membership Committee and to those members who have encouraged friends, family, and other qualified applicants to join Meridian Hills. Your participation along with your interest in maintaining high standards for our members, our professionals, and our facility, is the reason Meridian Hills continues to thrive.

Upcoming Events Indianapolis 500 Chartered Bus Service

Sunday, May 27th, 2012 Continental Breakfast, 7:00 - 8:15am / Buses leave MHCC at 8:30am SHARP Our police escort will depart from Broadmoor CC at 9:00am MHCC is offering chartered bus service to and from the Indy 500 on Race Day. On race morning, continental breakfast is available at MHCC from 7:00am to 8:15am. We ask our passengers to board their bus by about 8:15am, ready for departure at 8:30am. This year we will meet up with the police escort at Broadmoor CC. The police escort will depart Broadmoor CC at 9:00am. You will arrive at the track in plenty of time to see the pre-race activities. We have reserved parking spaces on 16th street across from the track.

After the race, the bus drivers are instructed not to leave until their bus is full or until one hour after the conclusion of the race.

The cost is $80.00 per person. It includes continental breakfast, box lunch and round trip to and from the track. (We ask that you observe the deadline of May 6th; reservations received after May 6th will be increased to $90.00 per person.)

Paddle Tennis News

2011-2012 PADDLE TENNIS SEASON SUMMARY

Tuesday and Saturday Club play: We had more players participate in these two paddle days than ever before. Most of the time we were having three different time slots to fill the courts, which accommodated 36 players in an evening and morning.

Thursday league play: We had about 28 players from MHCC participating in this year’s league play. This again is a record amount of participation. Unfortunately we came in last place, but some of the league probably needs to be tweaked for next year. One of the clubs did not have enough players participating. Most matches were paired as evenly as possible which made it fun for our players. Thank you very much Ron Mencias, who worked hard in pairing up the teams and trying to accommodate with everyone's schedule. MHCC has many players who want to play in this league, so next year there will be a possibility of having a draft system in place.

City Tournament: Many members played in this event which is hosted by MHCC. We had 32 teams from the city play, with 1/4 of the draw made up of Meridian Hills. It was most definitely the strongest field to compete in. I do feel that all members should play in this event to gain experience and support for the game. Thanks to the Paine Mencias Group for sponsoring this event so the players could receive a favor.

Indianapolis National Tourney: This was no doubt the strongest field we have ever had! All tournaments are rated play. Indianapolis had a rating of 2.6. Basically this means that we were the 4th or 5th highest level tourney in the country. The Nationals and the charities are also include in this list. Indy is making waves in the paddle world! We now have two teams for Indy in the top 50 in the country for the first time. Ryan Baxter and Ricki Heath are ranked No. 31 and Club pros Ludo Aaron and Brian Hagman are No. 46.

This tourney could not take place without the sponsors and the organization. Thanks to Steve Webster for refereeing. Steve did an amazing job in keeping everything going as quickly and as efficiently as possible with over 120 players competing. A special thanks to the members who sponsored the event.

Drew Hamilton with Blackrock who was the headline sponsor Haydon Hapak with Hogan Mayflower Dr. Matt French and Dr. John Fry with Vascular Partners Mike Stewart with First Merchants Bank Ron Mencias with Merrill Lynch Club Championship: 50 members played in this years event. The winners of the main draw were John Kite and Jim Schumacher who defeated Steve Cobb and Tag Birge in exciting three-set match with two breakers in the first two sets. The finals had a great atmosphere with many people who came out to watch. Other notables in the main draw were Adam and Chris Seger who also had a fantastic 3 set battle against Kite and Schumacher, and also Mencias and Cooper who kept surprising teams with many upsets.

Father and son David and Andrew Held won the 1/4 final reprieve in a close match against upcoming players Dr. Pat Kersey and Bryan Barrett. The back draw was won by Dr. Johannes Tauscher and Kevin Niceley who defeated Dr. Steve Stitle and Dr. Brian Wiegel.

Ladies Paddle: We still need a little work with this aspect of the paddle program. We did have 3 playing sessions per week which is more than any other year, but we really need to get more of the city involved so there is more of a goal for our ladies. Keep coming out!

Jack’s Golf Shop will match any price from anywhere on golf equipment.

The golf staff offers single lessons and group clinics for all genders and ages.

Callaway Golf offers a Trade-In Trade-Up Program that applies credit toward new equipment!

Golf Course Dress Code Reminder

Proper attire must be worn at all times by members and their guests on the:

-Golf Course

-Practice Tee

-Putting and Chipping Greens Proper attire consists of:

-Slacks, tailored shorts, or skirts and skorts for ladies

-Sport shirts with collar, mock turtlenecks, or blouses for ladies

-Golf shoes with soft spikes or tennis shoes Inappropriate attire would be:

-Sandals of any type, swimming suits, swimming trunks, jogging shorts, coaches shorts, tennis attire, tank tops, or tee shirts without collars Other dress code issues we ask to be followed:

-Shirts be tucked into your shorts or slacks

-Hats must be worn facing forward at all times and should be taken off when in the Clubhouse.

-Remember, blue jeans are not allowed on any part of the golf course or practice area, at any time.

Golf News 2012 Junior Golf - Sign Up Now!

All Junior Golf and Players Tour brochures will be available in the golf shop beginning April 1st. We ask that all parents come by and pick up these brochures, as they provide detailed information on the 2012 Junior Golf Program and Players Tour! We will have some exciting, retooled programs this year as our staff is focused on junior golf and growing the game at Meridian Hills!

Mission of Junior Golf The MHCC Junior Golf program is designed to create a fun atmosphere in an attempt to hook a young golfer on the game quickly. At Meridian Hills, we create a fun and energetic environment to showcase the game of golf and encourage the development of the junior golfer(s). Focus is placed on the game’s history, rules, proper golf etiquette, and the basic fundamentals of the golf swing. The program will also provide a competitive experience for our more accomplished junior players. Our goal is to have each young golfer excited about coming to Meridian Hills to learn and play this wonderful game we all love!

2012 Play With The Pro’s

Meridian Hills is bringing back the Play with a Pro Day. When you play with the pro you are competing in a season long tournament with your foursome. Each team will record their best ball score and then at the end of the year we will crown a winning team. Every group is competing against each other regardless of which Pro you sign up with. For example, if your group played with Jack, you will also be competing against all of the groups that played with Michael and Scott. All ties will be broken by scorecard playoff starting with the #1 handicap hole and regressing.

Sign up sheets, with dates, will be available in the golf shop to Play with the Pro’s: Jack, Michael and Scott. Get your threesome together to join one of the Pro’s in a one best ball, full handicap format. The cost is $15 per person and the total entry fees will be used for prizes. If you have to cancel you may reschedule depending on availability. You must be a golfing member in order to participate.
